There should have been more Gunnison players on the 2A first team.
Tbird | 3:51 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Levi Te'o not on the First team all-State????
Are you kidding me. Timpview would not have won the championship without him. Wasn't he named the MVP of the State Championship game?
Who picks these teams anyway???

Losing programs don't get players on the 1'st team unless that player is so good he's college bound.
Look at the list, in you head of course, of the schools that did not get anyone on the team. It's a long one. Try harder next year. It pays off.
Re: TBird | 6:52 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
The coaches not only vote once, they vote twice now. So these players are the ones who made it through two rounds of voting by the coaches throughout the state.
Southern Utah | 7:03 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Too many Dixie and Pine View players on these teams.
Anonymous | 7:06 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Amazing that Delta didn't have more players represented on 1st, 2nd or honorable mention teams.

A few differences | 7:10 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Anthony Miles was Provo's top player by far, should have been second team. Colton Ramon should have been second team and Springville QB Isaac Allred at least honorable mention. The Red Devils beat Orem, gave Dixie all it could handle, and those two teams have way more players recognized. I think coaches need to put more effort into lobbying for their quality players for these honors so they get the votes they deserve.
Levi Te'o fan | 7:15 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
I agree with you all the way TBird. I'm a diehard Cottonwood fan, but I was so impressed with Levi and his awesome play. He did it all year long, too. Hopefully, the other paper put him where he should be. To be honest, a team like Timpview with a 36-game winning streak should have more first teamers than what is presented. Sadly, Te'o was stuck on the 2nd team with a couple of Granger players that won I think only one game this year.
Concerned | 7:40 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
No 2nd team All-State players for the 5A State Champions Alta Hawks !!! Was this a mistake?
What? | 7:47 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
The 4A MVP did not make the first team? Is this a typo, X was the most dominating player in 4A if not in the state. What's up D News? Common Editor!!!!
Teo | 8:11 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
is a good HS back who benefited significantly from a dominant O-line. Watch Isi and Levi in the championship game and there is no question who is better. I haven't seen Timo play but i would imagine that if he was in TV's backfield he would have 2000+ yards.

Levi has great heart and is a good talent but not nearly as good as Isi or Timo.
Re: What | 8:15 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Are you really that brain dead? Mr. Football and MVPs are above the first team, it's an added honor. Of course they're first team, so quit your whining Mr. X's dad.
Coach Peck | 8:42 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
He does the best placing his kids on here and getting his players recruited.
Politics | 8:59 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
In the political world that is the all-state selection process it is a shame that Uintah, which beat 4 teams that made it to state (even though Uintah did not) is not represented at any level in the selections.

If you look carefully, you will see a 2nd team LB from Uintah named Skylar Powell. The problem is that Skylar Powell did not dress for a single varsity game. Tyler Larsen on the other hand was a great RB and DB and also handled all kicking duties. Uintah's defense was better that decent this year (with a couple of exceptions) but no one was good enough to even be mentioned in the all state honorable mention.

What a joke! Maybe the DN thinks that we are part of Colorado or something. The Front sure is willling to take the mineral lease money from here but not willing to aclnowledge our existence in high school sports. We beat Salem Hills, Ogden, Emery, and Union, all of which are repesented on the list, but no one from Uintah.
What about the fog | 9:18 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
in Vernal? Mineral lease money? Who was this politics guy? Exactly! No one knows and no one cares. About the fine young men in Vernal, they deserve more attention, but life is not fair.
To Vernal | 9:28 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
I know for a fact your coach didn't send in an all-state ballot. I've seen the list of the coaches who didn't vote, and your coach was one of them. Maybe you should blame him.

Bradley Holmes is only a junior
c'mon | 9:39 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
ya uintah deserves more credit, i mean they did beat four teams... haha there is no one from uintah that should be all state. I'm sorry your son didn't make it but c'mon the kids on this list deserve it
I know making these decisions | 9:48 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
is tough, especially when coaches won't send in their data. I would almost like this to be left in the hands of the writers who actually get to see about every player instead of coaches who might only see a handful. Only a few dedicated coaches send out their faxes to politic for their players etc. while others don't take the time and their boys get shortchanged.

One player that I thought was a major oversight for the first team was Anthony Miles of Provo HS. His team struggled but he had a terrific year with 11 TD's, three kick-off returns for TD's, four interceptions on defense. He had over 1000 yards in receiving and returning and averaged 43 yards punting. In one game he collected 352 all-purpose yards and about every coach that saw him down in Utah County would confirm that he's a special talent. He made Honorable Mention but he was really a first team talent but perhaps he wasn't promoted effectively and certainly playing on a poor team gave him limited exposure. But somebody like a Jim Rayburn, your Utah County prep guy could confirm his talent in relation to his peers.
Rediculous | 9:54 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
If Timpview played someone good they wouldn't have half as many kids that would get scholarships, they aren't very good and they will get rocked in college. I would love to know the last player from timpview that has done good in college or the pro's? Thats right I don't know of any cause there isn't anyone. Boo Anderson from alta actually has done something.
Gunner | 9:58 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
It shocks me that Michael Montoya from Alta didn't get 1st team all-state if not Mr. Football. The kid has offers from LSU, Notre Dame, USC, and Florida. It's ridiculous! Senior JV Stats(9 games): 105 rushes, 1,023 yards, 27 TDs. Thanks Les Hamilton.
Joke | 10:00 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Adam Driggs from Bingham deserves to get first team all state. He accomplished a lot for this program this year and deserves it. Did anyone not see his 36 TD's and 1600 Yds. Look at the stats and decide if you think it is right.
TV Fan | 10:08 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Hey bills congrats on the selection, just a little future advice. Next time you get cracked by someone worth playing, don't cry about it!

WATCH OUT! Gary Vyncent Mr. Football 2019
Where's ... | 10:10 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Logan Taele, and Logan Lloyd from Dixie. Maybe one of the best DE and OT this year!
Re: Rediculous | 10:13 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Harvey Unga is doing pretty good. The Y might have done well to put the ball in his hands more against the U. He's a horse! The Reynolds brothers (not just the two there now) have been successful.
Alta fan | 10:14 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
I saw Adam Driggs in the championship game when they battled us, he is legit and should definately be put on first team all state. He has the build of a linebacker and the speed of a wide receiver. I have heard that he is going to USC on a full ride! That is impressive, watch out college football!
Bravedad | 10:16 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
WAY TOO GO ALL ALL-STATE PLAYERS YOU GUYS ARE AWSOME!!
AND SON IM VERY PROUD OF YOU! LOVE YA!
Spectator | 10:25 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
If Levi Te'o would've played the whole game and taken all of the carries like Isi Sofele and Adam Timo did he would've been 1st team. I've watched him since 7th grade... Regardless, its a political system and anyone who watched him all year especially in the championship game should know he deserves 1st team all-state.
Keith Sasine? | 10:31 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Someone help me? How can a player that lead the team in tackles and was the Defensive MVP at Bingham High not be on the 1st team. He was clearly the best linebacker in the program. Help me understand why he was left off the 1st team.
Michael Montoya | 10:34 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
He is an all star, he ran all over the JV squads! He bench presses 240 and he has the heart of a champion! He at least should have got 1st team all state. Good look Michael and keep up the good work it will be good seeing you on ESPN in two years!
Former Alta Player | 10:35 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
GREAT JOB all Alta players! Another good year. My hat goes off to Les Hamilton. He's amazing. If anyone is wondering I'm doing great at BYU!

I've seen Gary Vyncent play. The kid will play on saturdays maybe even sundays. He's a true talent. 2019 Mr. Football? Agreed.
COACH | 10:56 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Justin Brown of LCA had 13 INT's and 16 TD's as a player. Can you guys change his stats? And where is Jarrell Walker of LCA he had 1,535 yrds rushing for LCA?
To Teo fans | 10:59 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
When you say the other paper puts him where he should be, keep in mind the coaches are the ones who picked these players. But often they vote one way for one paper the other for another paper. But the Deseret News all state teams always are more prestigious, and they have award banquets and the other doesn't.
4A MVP Trib | 11:09 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
My prediction is it will be Bronson Kaufusi, so that Timpview gets another honor. The papers usually vary alot because coaches vote two ways to get more kids on there.
5A | 11:39 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Cannon#54 is a great D-Line man- He was lineman of the week almost every week for Bingham. He did not get 1st or 2nd team. My son has played with him every year and he is one of the finest players I know. I just want to mention him because he deserves more.
Politics | 11:42 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Coaches vote for the players. It is based on the total amount of votes a player gets from the
coaches in their classification. They are the ones who watch countless film and see these kids on the field. You may not agree, but they are more qualified than newspaper writers or arm chair QB's who sit in the stands with rose colored glesses.
proud of all the athletes | 11:55 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
THIS IS A GREAT HONOR FOR ALL OF THESE ATHLETES. LETS TAKE A MOMENT TO QUIT WHINING AND JUST RECOGNIZE THE SUCCESS OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL IN UTAH. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE GREAT MEMORIES AND SOME OF THE BEST FOOTBALL I HAVE EVER SEEN. GREAT JOB BOYS
To ridiculous: | 12:04 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Besides Unga and the Reynolds, there are many more. What exactly has walk on Boo done??? Alta would lose to T.V. no question. Do you even watch games???
No Heimuli | 12:16 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Anthony Heimula from Mountian View was the best football player in Region 7 and didn't even make honorable mention??
Lots of good players missing | 12:17 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
To all the deserving players left off: The all state selections are a political and guessing game for the most part. There are many obvious choices that are no brainers. But as for the majority of the selections, at best it's a good selection of good players - not better or worse than many others. For those that were slighted, use it as fuel to push yourself and when/if you succeed past those selected above you, you will have your satisfaction.
Viking Fan | 12:35 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Allow me the soapbox for a moment... Why do some teams always continue to be mediocre at best? At all levels in high school it seems the same schools have continued success, while others either stink or sit around average. I'm a Viewmont fan and they never get any better, they usually are one and done in the playoffs and it can't really be the kids because Bountiful and Davis who are in close proximity both have had plenty of success in football and both have recently won titles.. Just curious, because it gets old... would be so nice to see the Vikings play up on the turf from time to time, but for now I would just take it once. Any ideas?
Hey: Politics | 12:37 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
I understand the politics and I think they are brutal. I know of atleast 2 players in the 5A ranks that SHOULD be replaced by other players. #32 and #54 from Bingham are far more deserving.
just wondering | 12:43 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
Why does any of this matter, who will remember who was first team or second team in 5 years? the player and his family, maybe. The guys who are the real thing end up playing in college and the pros, the rest of this is a large celebration of mediocrity! Fact of the matter is, Utah is not exactly a hotbed of NFL talent. Let's just be happy the boys play, learn and develop!
All State | 12:52 p.m. Dec. 5, 2008
I guess to put it all in perspective. What does it all really mean? The bottome line is the really good players on or off the list will go on to play at the next level and hopefully have great careers. These choices are subjective but they don't determine the success of any of the players.

If you made the team, congratulations! If you didn't and perhaps should have, keep working hard, you will get your rewards!!!

Congrats to everyone!! There are alot of deserving players.
