Why not take a moment and pause for a good look in the mirror. What is it you see???

It often seems that, no matter what the subject, the anti-Mormons flock to Deseret News comments like termites coming out of the woodwork. Then they often act offended or surprised that Deseret News even has stories about Mormons. How absurd that is! Why are they surprised that a Church-owned news organization, in Utah, of all places, would have a preponderance of stories about Mormons, or about Mormonism?

Sour grapes is right. There are people here every day that can't seem to find anything positive to say about anyone, especially someone who is Mormon.

Glen Beck's story sounds, from what I've read about it, like a story with universal truths, worth hearing. Anyone who has overcome serious addictions, and life challenges, and found faith to lead them to a better life, has a story worth sharing. It really doesn't matter what religion the person chooses, either. But then, I'm one who is open to universal truth from just about any source. Unfortunately, some people aren't. Some people are bigots, and some people here are especially prejudiced against Mormons.

Thank you for judging my life without knowing anything about me. I'm not knocking Glenn Beck, just disagreeing with him. If he was satisfied with saying he disagrees with me, without calling me a hater of America, I wouldn't have anything to say at all.
RedShirt | 11:06 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
To "Not sour grapes | 10:26 a.m." Glenn is courtous to people that disagree with him. However, he does not put up with people who yell and scream at him and won't either answer his questions or refuse to listen to him.

Just like if you had somebody on the phone who disagreed with you or refused to let you get your point across, he hangs up on them.
DarlaG | 11:12 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
*Maybe if he didn't have to use so much union labor, his show costs would be cheaper!
*If you actually watched our listened to his show, you would know he DOES invite other view points. His T.V. show most always had 2-3 panelists on various discussions for both sides of the political spectrum- better percentage than most left wing shows! And he has friend on the show from both sides, too.
* Glenn is very compassionate, but he is also big on personal responsibility, something so many have forgotten about. He has a twisted sense of humor, though...something many have lost! Laugh more, people!
* I think it is great to have such a thoroughly human, visible LDS star out there. I liked Glenn long before I realized he was LDS. I like that he is so open about his past and current struggles. He shown not all LDS are choir boys; we're real people w/ real problems we're trying to over come.
* Glad I can catch his show in theaters where I am- for a mere $17/ ticket. If he were in person, though, I'd gladly cough up more. His shows are worth it.
@Lynn | 11:21 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I have posted two negative comments here about Glenn Beck, and I am a church-going, tithe-paying Mormon, who also happens to be a liberal. Don't read anti-Mormon conspiracies into everything you read here. I love the Mormon church, I love Glenn Beck, and I respect the program this article is about. That doesn't mean I have to agree with everything he says or does. Way too many Utahns equate LDS faithfulness with conservative politics. That is a mistake which would cause you to disagree with many current and former general authorities who happen to be Democrats.
Anonymous | 11:34 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Heck I can go to a world class show in Vegas for the cost of the Glenn Beck sweeter display. I think the vegas shows spend a little more on production than the sweeter, yet the prices are about the same. What gives?
I respect Beck, but disagree with almost everything he preaches. Let him be who he is.
It is funny that Mormons love their own as long as they are extremly conservation. But dislike Senator Reid, Who is the most powerful Mormon politican ever!! And Mormon hate the guy, even though he is a good member who supports the church, Why doesn't deseret book sell his book?
@ RedShirt 11:06am | 11:36 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I left the Not sour grapes comment. I agree with you. Beck is courteous to guests on his TV show and callers on his radio show who courteously disagree with him. I have no beef with that. However, he constantly ridicules and belittles liberals in general, and sometimes specific ones, calls them haters of America, and shows no respect for their views. That, I do have a beef with.
I like him | 11:40 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Mostly because he's not afraid to say what he thinks and feels even though most of America hates him. You go Beck!
And Hollywood Mormon: you are full of bologna.

Glen Beck's life was pathetic, but that didn't make it an interesting story. What makes his life a interesting story is that he had the courage to change it. If you want to make your pathetic life interesting have the courage to change it. The first step is to recognize that your life is pathetic and the source of your hate for those that have the courage to change their lives. DK

The one thing I have noticed about Glenn Beck is his insight, and ability to put the pieces together on world events. As I have listened and watched him, I have found him to correct on many things.
May he have success with the "Christmas Sweater".

>compete with the likes of "CATS"

Even run-of-the-mill network sitcoms can compete with an overrated snorefest like that.

As for the novel, it's never going to be considered a classic work of art, but it's not trying to be. It merely tells a simple story to illustrate a transcending concept that will bring hope to those who look for goodness, and a sneer to those too jaded and self-absorbed to embrace spiritual depth.

Those whining about Glenn's income are apparently unaware of the fact that a significant percentage of that income goes to charity (and not just tithes and offerings).

>Not sour grapes

Ah, more sour grapes.

I personally know Glenn and his family. They are wonderful, tender hearted people. I feel as though I know his heart and it soft, compassionate, tender and giving. His radio show is not intended to be the same as his tv show. Most of the callers on the radio are "set ups" just to get the listeners stirred (it is part of the entertainment version of the "show"). He has caught me off guard a few times too until I discovered the ploys. His tv show is serious. He is strongly devoted to his country and the citizens. He is NOT making money off this project and by the grace of God he does, I'm pretty sure it will go right back to the many charities he graciously contributes to. Yes, I admit he gets a bit hot tempered at times, but dont we all? Messing with politicians (who line their own pockets before who they serve) can grate on your nerves time after time, especially when they aren't held accountable. He has a very strong testimony of Christ and I've witnessed this growth. If you all knew how humble Glenn truley is, you'd be embarassed by your harsh judgments.
Another entertainer | 12:25 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I used to listen to Glenn Beck and enjoyed his program. But after awhile he just became another elist "star" and started preaching as though he was a little more knowledgeable than the rest of us.

What's wrong with earning money? Isn't that what we are all trying to do? Also, everyone should pay tithing too, not just Mormons. Give your church your 10% and help out the world like Glen is doing. We will all benefit as will your standing in the eyes of God.
If it helps one addict | 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
If it helps one addict or alcoholic it is worth it! He needs to make a living and you don't have to buy it. On the other hand if it is increasing the risk of drug and alocoholic addiction like some of the current movies, shows on TV, or music reaching our kids ears today, shame on him! We have addiction in our family and I applaud anyone that is doing something, anything, to help. What have you done?

I have enjoyed the Glenn Beck CHNN show. My wife purchased the Christmas Sweater on CD's read by Glenn, himself. We listened to the novel as we traveled during Thanksgiving. It was a great novel and I would recommend it to all for Christmas. I wish Glenn all the success.

I agree with almost everything you said, except this: Lots of Mormons love Harry Reid, especially in Nevada but also elsewhere, in places where we aren't tied to the conservative politics of Utah. Meanwhile, Glenn Beck is beloved in Utah, but not so much elsewhere. I hope his show does well, but I won't be dropping a C-note to see it.

Harry Reid is nothing more than a shill for the liberals. He lies when convenient (just listen to him). Doesn't matter if he's Mormon or not. He is a bad politicion who is enamored with power and scared stiff of the MoveOn.org crowd who put him in power in the first place.

I remember when he was a good centrist instead of a firebrand liberal. He only became a good liberal when he got into power positions in the Senate. He becomes a good centrist when he runs for re-election (at least in Nevada).

Glenn Beck in an awesome man. He is hilarious and talented. His personal story and conversion is inspirational. Some of you do not like his politics and are therefore assailing him without knowing anything about him. I am very glad that he is going fromm the totally liberal CNN to the much mored balanced Fox (And I have watched both extensively). I have purchased the tapes of The Christmas Sweater for my wife. Can't wait to hear it.
Chris | 2:17 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
My middle name is Glenn and I'm thinking of changing it now. Has anyone turned on his radio show and heard all the screaming and swearing and bitterness? Granted this was just before Obama won and he was very upset that people working at Mcdonalds who never get his "order" right, should get help from taxing the rich. Like all media, he made money off of 911 which really took him off the charts with his "attack anyone" just to get even attitude. Now he wonders why wars cost so much money. I guess if most of America is divorced, on medicine and doesn't read, that explains why he is so popular. Come January, you watch, his show will be different, he is a cameleon, just changes with the times in order to stay on TV.
blacknwhitehorses | 2:18 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
When you talk about Reid you can't leave out his favorite sidekick Pelosi. Reid and Pelosi, those two have done more to destroy any progress in the US Congress than all the rest of the leaders combined. Pelosi is a brat who should be home baking cookies and babysitting grandkids instead of causing confusion and contention in the nations capital. Thank heaven for somemone like Glenn Beck who exposes them for what they really accomplish NOTHING!!!
His next book | 2:24 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008

to Chris: What NERVE!! I was with the Beck family when 911 happened. I KNOW what they went through, what we all went through! The audacity of your comment that he is making money from such a national tragedy shows your own supreme lack of humanity. When he came back from viewing ground zero...no one, not even Glenn can put into words how it affected him, and his family. He also struggled for a LONG time before leaving Tampa for National syndication and then TV. I know he was on his knees and in the Temple supplicating to the Lord on what was best for he and his family. Man...you people tend to forget that we ALL are children of God and we are NOT perfect but working towards it. Also on the Wicked cost...if Glenn's show would have a show and tour schedule such as that show, yea,it would be much cheaper to get into! Limited engagements are just that, limited and usually just break even. Lets be honest people, who didnt have a tantrum now and again during this election season???? Just read the book!

It's Amazing to me that [Lew Jeppson | 7:56 a.m.], [Anonymous | 6:54 a.m.] and others, can mock Glenn Beck for sharing a story and part of his life and soul... just because they have a different political ideology. These politcal dogma addicts are so pathetic.

And THEY usually criticise Glenn Beck and others for being spiteful, divisive and agenda driven! Strange how these people who complain the most about "Right-wing-nut-jobs" being divisive... always seem to turn right around and spew their own devisive message. Hmmm.
paa | 4:11 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Glenn is my favorite talk show host by far. He puts just enough humor into his shows to keep them from getting too serious, yet he's able to cover the important issues in an informative & entertaining way. Of course he's not perfect and has likely said things which have offended some at different times, but what do you expect? For someone who speaks his mind, and is expected to talk and entertain for so much time each day, he's bound to offend someone at some time on any given day, especially in this "politically correct" world where people take offense at the piddliest little perceived offenses, and a world where people are so quick to find fault and condemn a person (or a church) over anything. I admire him a great deal for what he's doing, and am interested in buying his new book.
Scott, Iowa | 4:17 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I see a lot of animosity towards Mormons in these comments. It is probably just as well. There is no other way to know people's hearts but through the open mouth issuing thoughts and feelings. Do people really see how crass they appear? If they did, I suppose they might change their tune.
jeez | 4:24 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Glenn isn't perfect and he'd probably be the first to admit that fact. He does have a tendency to go overboard with the things he says and does, but I believe he is a genuinely good man.
Glenn Tells It | 4:28 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Like he sees it. That is all. I have never heard him on the radio group "libs" or "Dems" together and put them down wholesale. He always gets down to specifics - specific things they are doing that makes blood shoot from his eyes or makes his head explode. We need people who will stand up and say it like it is (or how they see it at least), no matter how politically incorrect it might be. I hate it when people try to silence the voices of others who oppose them. That seems to be coming more from the left than the right these days (gay marriage, global warming, etc.) Glenn won't let them silence him and I am thankful for him. We all need to be more that way.

It is interesting that, whether this string of comments or any other, the nastiest usually come out of Utah.

Either Mormons generally are really rotten people up close; or,a lot of other people have to grow up and get over their pettiness.

This reminds me of two kids fighting with each other because one of them looked on his side of the car!!

Stamp "LDS" on it, and the uninformed masses will come running with their wallets open. He will laugh all the way to the bank at how easy it was to say- "I'm famous, and a convert!" and collect the checks as they roll in!
Too "GeeBee | 4:34 p.m." | 4:45 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Your snarky comment is duely noted, but I think this book and the show selling pretty well in markets other than Utah and among Mormons. You did read that it's currently NUMBER ONE on the New York Time best-seller list, right?

But blame it all on Mormons. That's your usual shtick.

I was listening to his show on the way home from work yesterday and he mentioned that his show is sold out in every venue EXCEPT Salt Lake City. That sort of goes against your assumption that only Mormons want to see it, or that all he has to do is say he's a Mormon and we will flock to see it and throw our money at him.

As usual, your complex with the LDS is showing in your comments.
GeeBee | 4:53 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
@ 4:34...
I never said I wasn't LDS...I simply find it ridiculous that people that don't even know the man are defending him like kin simply because he has a conversion story and he's famous, and are more than willing to open up their wallets to him. I suspect that if he was a liberal senator, he'd be met with nothing but BOOS from the same crowd.

Who's the fool? Good, honest, decent people that try to live their life according to principles of decency, honor and integrity as best as they can(yes, I'm talking about LDS members as a collective whole) or those that despise and hate whatever is beautiful and good and refuse to even begin to contemplate their blindness?

I am a huge fan of Glenn Becks, I have been listening for years and not just while in the Car.

Glenn is a shameless self promoter and I see nothing really wrong with that.

I relate to him on a lot of the Issues to include the Booze. When he has been Dry for over 20 years like me, then he might have something to say on the subject.

My mother fled from my father and left me with him when I was 9 and I saw her once from that time till the time she died.

What we share today is Sobriety with out the aid of AA. The Gospel, The Church, Family. I am somewhat older then him but in that same era. Me at the Beginning and him towards the end.

We also share Conservatism and a guanine fear for America and the American way of life. We are both Anti Abortion but pro alternatives.

We both have Special Needs Kids who are doing well.

He was better at picking up his Life then I was, but I did okay.

He has great talent. We both have Depression.

He has more Guilt then me.

Glenn came to the Idaho Falls area to speak and while he was there driving in a car he saw a house with several wheelchairs outside on the porch. curiosity got the better of him and he stopped to inquire and found out this family had several family members wheelchair bound. He wanted to do something to help this family so he returned a few weeks later on his own dime to give a speech with all proceeds going to help this family. He made nothing and all costs for this came out of his own pocket. Please don't say Glenn Beck is not a generous and giving individual. I doubt you will find anyone else in his position who is as giving as he is.
