I am also hoping for Mitt in 2012 ... and maybe, our God willing, he can have Orin Hatch as his running mate !!!
Don't Dumb Us Down | 7:06 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Please don't dumb down members of the Church and assume that we all are for Mitt Romney, although that sure seems to be the Deseret News' stance. How naive to vote for someone merely because of their church affiliation! It doesn't mean much!

Members of my family have supported who they want for candidates, and it has not universally been Mitt Romney! Interestingly, those family members who DON'T follow the Church's guidelines are the ones who wanted him.

Mitt came off as indecisive and too slick. He didn't handle the press well. Personally, in this political climate I don't want a Mormon to be president because of all the criticism. By the way, he made his money as an investment banker. Do you think this fact would have escaped the virulent press?

We can no longer vote for someone because of their stance against or for abortion. Whether or not we agree with it, the right to abortion WILL NOT be removed. And we should not vote for anyone because of their religion, any more than because we are against their religion.

Church and State are separate in this country, the last I checked.

Clare | 7:13 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I wish Mitt Romney would run for President with Palin as his V.P., but face it. Too many people are prejudiced against Mormons. In fact, most don't even have the correct facts about the church. Ignorance once more raises its ugly head.

To Jana Peterson: I would like to know what planet YOU are living on. Sarah is the most popular governor in the country. She has an 80 percent plus approval rating and has been EXTREMELY successful in her state at implementing all kinds of programs. There is NO evidence of ANY corruption whatsoever. She is extremely bright and capable and anyone who has worked with her thinks so. She kicked Joe Biden's butt in the debate and virtually everyone said so.

I know. You have been reading the far left loon hate blogs and the DNC talking points. Please don't let yourself by duped by this crap. This is, unfortunately, what politics have come to today--Attacks and lies on anyone they oppose. I'm really afraid for my country. The far left is so blinded by hatred that it has absolutely descended into a state of complete derangement. It's really scary.
EeeGad | 7:21 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Just another teaser from the media.

Palin is totally awesome!!! She's got much more charisma than most. Sad she is not our President, because we are being fed a bunch of lies from the media about the utter greatness of Obama.

Then again, why are we even talking about this? Give it a rest and bask in the glory of Obama.
liberal Larry | 7:28 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
What the demos should fear is a moderate, southern, governor running against Obama in 2012. As a confirmed liberal my choice would be Romney, and Palin. The moderates and independents would be put off by the low brow, Palin, and the "christians" would have a field day bashing the LDS Romney. It would be fascinating to watch the fireworks!
Conservative Mormon | 7:51 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I find it debasing that the Deseret News continues to suggest that Mitt Romney represents Mormons, and that voters that won't vote for him are anti-Mormon. Well, I voted for Govenor Huckabee because Mike Huckabee was a conservative who ran on a record of conservative issues. Mitt Romney is a lifetime liberal who has raised taxes, supported abortion, and has banned automatic assault rifles.

Read Govenor Huckabee's book and see how Mitt Romney treated the Thompson, Brownback, and Huckabee campaigns. Read how Romney tried to buy the election with $40 million and how Huckabee won the south, Iowa, and Kansas for about 20 bucks a vote.

I would gladly vote for Sarah Palin because govenor Palin has conviction and principles. She would mop the floor with Mitt's mullet.
Corporate Utah | 8:21 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Why is corporate Utah so scared? Do they fear that the people may finally get a voice in getting rid of the corrupt Utah government leaders? Obama hasn't even been sworn in yet and corporate Utah seems to be cowering at the thought of losing its grip in the Washington DC circles. And Mitt Romney is the biggest fraud and flake to ever grace the state of Utah. But he's a mormon and Utahn's are looking for the prophecy to be filled that a mormon will lead this country, but not Mitt, he's a Jack Mormon in disguise. He is a mormon by babtism only and has Utah under his thumb. Remember, our great leaders of this state are of the same faith and bear the same attitude of keeping the masses under hypnosis and sheep like. They all have the same attitude that if you are allowed to work in their business in this state, they are doing you a favor. Regardless of the substandard incomes and wages, let welfare subsidise your paultry income. Corporate Utah and the LDS church would be in for a rude awakening if Romney ever got in to office, he can't be trusted.

I keep hearing that Palin has more executive experience than Obama. Well, apart from the fact that I can name several past presidents who did a great job in office--and, by the way, had very little experience--I want to note that we need someone in the Oval Office who has a brain. Does anyone really, truly think that Sarah Palin has the brains to solve our nation's fiscal crisis? This is the same woman who didn't know that Africa was a continent, couldn't name one Supreme Court Case, and on and on. Obama might not solve our economic woes either, but at least he is informed, extremely intelligent, and levelheaded. That's a start.

Joke | 8:59 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I don't really want to see Republican's loose every state in the electoral college. Sarah Palin is a Joke. She was a huge drag on the McCain ticket this year. Watching debates and paying attention to other comments makes it clear she doesn't understand current events, and doesn't understand the constitution. She has very scarce qualifications for high office. Maybe she can further tout her foreign policy expertise by also stating that Alaska borders Canada and not just Russia! The more I learned about Palin, the more I disliked her. Although I am a registered Republican, I voted for Obama to protest McCain's lack of judgment in his pick for V.P. National Republicans need to look to a strong choice and someone who can attract moderates, not someone who energizes the 30% of the populace who would vote for a jar of mayonnaise if it were running on the Republican ticket.
HSFAN | 9:20 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
At least when it comes to style and class Palin outclasses Michelle Obama!

What was that "Black Widow Spider" dress she wore election night!

IMAN | 9:26 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
IMVHO - Mitt, or any other mormon for that matter, doesn't stand a chance outside of UT. Not that it is right or fair but that's how I see it. Mormons have a real PR problem to overcome with the rest of the nation and I don't see that problem going away anytime soon. At least not in time for the next election.

john carpenter, palin was chosen because of her low intellegence so she would appeal to the low intel repugs.she is nothing but a beauty queen, who spits out the same tired old lines, liberal mediea, guns, abotion, and on and on she goes.
she is the poster child for the uneducated.she runs in2012 and a democrat will be in office 4 more years.at least romney has some intellegence.

I do not want either of these idiots in the White House in 2012.

Utards are so brainwashed they still think Bush was a "good" president.
I think it is safe to say that the USA would be better off if Brigham Young had won the war that he waged with the US and become it's own sick little theocracy.
I know that most of you people have no idea that the Mormons were considered a "Terrorist Organization" and the US Military had to send troops here to try and get this territory under control, the whole while Prophet Brigham threatened this country and had Mormons take up arms in defense, hence Mountain Meadows.

Go Utah, you know it all!!!!!

Mitt & Sarah - The Difference | 9:52 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Mitt Romney banned automatic assault rifles in the State of Massachussett.

Sarah Palin has been a lifelong hunter who has protected the rights of gun owners as long as she has been an elected official.

Mitt Romney vowed to uphold Roe v. Wade as the law of the land, citing his pathetic mother's senate campaign.

Sarah Palin vowed to protect the rights of the unborn.

Mitt Romney legislated gay civil unions in his state.

Sarah Palin supports the traditional family.

Mitt Romney funded the Govenor's Coalition on Gay Youth.

Sarah Palin never funded such a program.

Mitt Romney raised the capital gains tax.

Sarah Palin lowered taxes as mayor of Wasilla and as Governor of Alaska.

Mitt Romney is a liberal.

Sarah Palin is a conservative.

With Sarah Palin's record, you would think that she is the real Mormon, and that Mitt Romney is Unitarian.
Anonymous | 10:03 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Sarah Palin has four years to show she has something besides fluff in her head. She gets the image thing really well. Substance is not her, however, and she appears very unpromising to improve much in that area. Her so-called conservative values are largely offset by her disregard for her young family, whom she chose to expose in a very vulnerable state to advance her skyrocketing political career. I believe she'll be out in a flash, and rightly so.

I was an enthusiastic Romney supporter but never thought for a minute McCain would add Romney to the ticket, his contempt for him being evident even after gaining Romney's support. I was contemplating swallowing the McCain pill when he brought Palin on board. I voted for Obama with a mixture of hope and concern. The concern was considerably accentuated when he picked the dishonest Mrs. Clinton to join his cabinet. However, in most respects he is comporting himself well, and as the country he inherits has lost much of its luster, the likelihood of him looking strong in four years means the Repubs will have a few more years than that to come up with a true winner.
UTAH PATRIOT | 10:15 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Romney President/Palin Vice President gets my vote in 2012. Both have their strengths and could pull this country out of the quagmire the Democratic congress has created these past two years.
Just watch, NObama and his Chicago style politics/home-grown terrorist cronies will make the situation even worse.
lies | 10:27 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
"Weiler said the success of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake guarantees Romney will "always be Utah's favorite son. If he wants to run, he's going to have a home base here. Just being Mormon is not enough.""
This is pure bologna. If Romney wasnt mormon, he would have split the vote with all the other republicans. It is absolutely the fact that he is mormon that cause him to get 90% of the primary vote in Utah.
Lies make baby Jesus cry.
disaster | 10:27 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Jon Huntsman would make a horrible president. He is really a weak governor, only gaining and maintaining his popularity by doing essentially nothing. Having heard the man speak many times, and heard nothing but platitudes and pablum, I have no confidence that Jon would be anything more than an embarrassment to the state. Besides, he's a RINO. Once his policies and positions get some real conservative scrutiny, people will realize he is left of Mike Leavitt, whose terms as governor were marked by his milque-toast moderate initiatives.
AUTOMATIC Assualt weapons | 10:38 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Does anyone really think they shouldn't be banned? Seriously, what do you need an automatic OR assualt weapon for? When was the last time a law abiding citizen used an automatic assualt weapon to protect anyone? The only time automatic assualt weapons are used is to commit crimes and slaughter large numbers of people. Hunting rifles, shotguns, pistols - YES!!! Automatic weapons - NO!!! The Constitution does not guarantee a right to automatic assualt weapons.

Did people not hear that Palin thought Africa was a country? What? Did people not hear that Palin counldn't name the three countries invovled in NAFTA?
Did people not hear her interviews when she said she has international experience because Alaska is close to Russia?
She lacks the Analytical skills needed to be president!!!!! Heck she lacks the skills and intelligence to be a school teacher.
No one with a brain can over look this.

Sarah Palin "pales" in comparison to Romney. Get it? "pales?" Palin? Hehe.

This is Utah. Romney is Mormon. He could be the worst political candidate in history and would still carry this state. Why waste your time even writing this article?

I vote Republican usually, and even if Mitt doesn't run, I won't vote for Palin.

This should be against the law to start discussing 2012 presidential politics while the economy is going

to get to the voting booth anyway.
JPC53 | 11:40 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Thank God the Utah Republicans are showing some intelligence in rejecting all the hype surrounding Gov. Palin. As she has shown over the last five months she is all fluff and no substance.
HA HA HA | 11:40 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
You folks suffer from grandiose illusions. Lets face it, the ONLY reason Utah wants Mitt is because he is a Mormon. And by the time President Obama leaves office in 2017, Mitt will be the same age as McCain is now--TOO OLD. IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!
Vote for Palin | 11:45 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
If you want the Republican party to suffer an even worse loss in 2012 than it suffered in 2008. I'm guessing she would garner about 30% of the vote against Obama, even (maybe especially) if we're in a Great Depression by then.
to: T-boone Lickens | 11:51 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Did you just arive from another planet? It's called the Utah War, 1857, Albert Sidney Johnston led Army troops into the Utah territory based on lies told to Pres. Buchanan. No battles were fought because the lies were uncovered and Col. Johnston led his troops to Camp Floyd, south of SLC. It's in all the history books, military and civilian.
Col Johnston later served and was killed in the Civil War as a Confederate General.

Do you have any real information to offer, or are you just making lame comments......
awesomeron | 11:52 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
This is a fact of life. As much as I like Mitt and feel that he would be a good President, and I would very much consider Voting for him the truth is that the Fundamentalist Right will never accept him.

The Fundamentalist Right makes up a huge segment of the Christian Population. This is what got him in trouble last time and will get him and trouble again.

Also that he was at one time Pro Choice, and changed his mind. I have no problem with this as I did also and I can remember the moment.

To some his fault is that he is Mormon, to others his Fault is that he is Not Mormon Enough. He has Won some with his kids and lost some and each is not Rollie or Molly Mormon.

There has been some reality in his life.

What he does have is Experience and is a great organization and Business Man.

We would have a fighting chance to STOP ABORTION in America. Deal with Illegal Immigration, Protect our Borders, Take Back Sunday and other Issues.

How ever we do not have 2008 quite settled yet so why worry about 2012.

Anon 808 | 12:08 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Although I would Vote for Mitt, I think Palin should run for President and that Mitt should be Called to The Quorum Of The Twelve Apostles. He is a great organization and business man, he has the Wealth, Success and Time to serve. He is well known and would be great to Missionary Work and Retention.

He has had to live a real life in a hard World and has Excelled been a great example of how Real Mormonism in everyday life functions. Not that the other havent.

He would make a great addition. Now Is The Time, He has a great Family History of Service to both the Church and the Public.

Remember Grandpas Signature is on Declaration 2.

I also believe his would be Bored to Death in a Month. However maybe not.
Re awesomeron | 12:14 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
What exactly do you mean that we have a fighting chance to stop abortion in America? I also am pro-life, but honestly what did the Republicans do when they controlled all 3 powers from 2000-2006 to "stop" abortion? Nothing. Move on. It's not going to change.

And what exactly do you mean by "take back Sunday"? Where did Sunday go? Still seems to be on my calendar.
MJ70 | 12:23 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Neither are the best candidate. Romney is not a good choice because he is not actually a conservative. Palin's not intelligent or experienced enough. Real conservatives ought to get behind a real economic conservative, such as Ron Paul.
Anonymous | 12:33 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I am an Independent Democrat (a Blue Dog Democrat to be exact), and though I will in all liklihood vote again for Obama (and Matheson) in 2012, I can truthfully say from an objective veiw (putting polar politics aside) that Romney would be a more qualified candidate and more electable than Palin. For one thing, Romney is much more of a 'centrist' which would make him a more formidable candidate against an Obama reelection bid.

Palin will be proven to not be the fiscal conservative she claims (which she is not), though a professed rabid right wing conservative she or her kids don't live the high-road such religiously infused individuals like to claim, and so on. Frankly, Romney is a much more sincere individual, even though I don't agree with many of his views politically or economically, I still find him more sincere and genuine.

Fact is, McCain botched it with that pretty little thing from Alaska, when he should have chosen someone more qualified and less polarizing.

Maybe Republicans will get it... Get back to the middle road! When done, they might get back us former Republican moderates who were smugly ignored for not trancing into religious fanaticism.
Neither one | 12:35 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Is an acceptable candidate for president, however Palin is the most unacceptable that any party could come up with.
I'm glad Utahns | 12:48 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
are getting braincells again. Sarah Palin is unqualifed for even the job she presently has. I hope the folks of AK finally see her incompentence and vote her out in 10.
Gus | 12:58 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Is it just me or do any of you think Palin was terrible for McCain's candidacy? I'm not saying that Romney is the answer, but Palin took a beating by the media, voters, and republican big-wigs. She was an embarrassment to our party. We still have four years for her to polish herself, but there's got to be someone (guy or girl) better for America.
Anonymous | 1:00 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
RE WHAT?: In my experince, for some people that vote based on their religious values, a person's knowlege of issues, can be of lesser imporatnace, than the voter's perception that the candidate is aligned with their particular values. For some people who do not vote based on religious values the opposite can be true. Trying to reach a common ground between these seemingly opposing perspectives may be an exercise in futility as neither seems to be swayed by arguments of the opposite camp. No great revalation here just one person's observation.
Hahahahahahaha!!! | 1:23 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
That is a funny thought.

Why would anybody want to make a choice between Mitt or Sarah? Neither one of them has a chance of being elected president of THEE UNITED STATES OF 'merica.

After Mitt's tirade at the Republican convention I'm convinced he'll say anything, do anything just so he can find someone who'll say I like you I like you. I REALLY LIKE YOU!

Sigh
BG | 1:45 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Sarah Palin is an opportunist, trying to get as much mileage out of her new found celebrity status, as John McCain's running mate. We could say, one hit wonder, or flash in the pan! She appeals to those who don't have the inclination to "think it through". Her limited national and international exposure/experience have and will continue to sabatoge her credibility, and minimize her viability as a serious candidate! Mitt Romney has nothing to fear from Sarah Palin. The Republican Party needs a good house cleaning and fumigation. Honest, down to earth, defenders of the People, wanted for public office!
Re: Cats | 1:46 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
FWIW, I moved to Utah from Alaska at the end of September.

As of Oct. 1st, Palin's rating was 68%. She HAD an 80% rating--before running for VP. She was enjoying a honeymoon period with Alaskans, who were happy to have ANY governor besides Frank Murkowski, whose final rating was an abysmal 20%. During her first two years in office, the state enjoyed windfall oil revenues, so this year, Palin short-sightedly decided to dole out $1200/person above and beyond the Permanent Fund Dividend (itself already at a record high, reflecting market conditions). But now the state faces budget shortfalls, and the Permanent Fund's market value is currently lower than its principal. Remains to be seen how popular she'll be in tougher times.

She's had only two major accomplishments as governor: drastically increasing taxes on oil companies (from which Alaska derives almost all its funding; by the way, it's consumers in the lower 48 who ultimately pay for those) and getting a deal in place to build a natural gas pipeline, although there's been considerable doubt whether oil companies would use that pipeline (some have threatened to build their own). Both accomplishments are controversial; both could really hurt Alaska's economy.
Doesn't matter | 1:47 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Palin 2012 = Obama victory, Romney 2012 = Obama victory (ergo Palin 2012 = Romney 2012).

Who else is there? Huckabigot? Huckabigot 2012 = very large Obama victory.
itsjustme | 1:56 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
We do not need another RINO on top of the Republican ticket the next Presidential election. We need a true Conservative, not a tax and spend republican. If the Republican party nominates another John McCain for 2012, they might as well just disband. The Republican party of Barry Goldwater has ceased to exist.

Like Ronald Reagan said when he changed from a Democrat to a Republican: "I didn't leave the party; the party left me".
SLMG | 1:56 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I truly hope that the Republican Party is smart enough to pick someone, anyone besides Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney to run for President.
Mitt couldn't get past February in the primary.
Sarah Palin is a joke. Why not wipe the slate clean and find a candidate that might at least have a chance to win.
