sure sounds like insulin shock. It was the diabetes center, you would think that they would recognize that possibility

This is nothing unusual, I have seen 100 guys that fit this description at Rice Eccles Stadium. The Ute campus is full of them.

Insulin shock doesn't make you act like a crazy person.

You get drowsy, slurred speech, sweating, dizzy, light headed, palpitations.

Insulin shock?? I have had several episodes of low blood glucose and never once tore up an office or punched people. Come on, we diabetics aren't monsters.

Yea your right Anonymous, at BYU, everyone behaves themselves. Prozac works wonders.

Yes, low blood sugar can make you act crazy. As having dealt with it for many years as a FF, I have seen it many times. I have had to help hold "crazy" people down, heard the most foul language come out of people, and all sorts of other interesting things. Once you get some sugar on board, they usually turn out to be the nicest people, who appoligize for their behavior. However, they usually don't calm down UNTIL AFTER you get sugar in them. This guy calmed down on his own. This doesn't fit the norm. Who knows?

This story might have been a tool to educate & inform if it had been delayed a bit to fill out why it happened. For example, if it was insulin shock, we could have been told how to help someone in such a condition, etc.
As it is, this poor man's name is in the paper, and everyone's speculating. Not fair reporting.

That poor Doctor got punched in the arm. Dang, I bet that hurt. Maybe he should have asked the nurse, who successfully deflected the punch to her face, to protect him. Doctors are notorious for having their nurses do the heavy lifting, and having them take the heat when things go wrong. At least Dr. Ouch, You Hurt My Arm didnt shove the nurse out in front of himself for protection, or did he? Get back to us on this point, will you? We need clarification.

Actually, $100 dollars says he wasn't taking any medication. If he was taking his medciation, this wouldn't have happened.

The indvidual's blood glucose should have been tested to at least confirm/rule out hypoglycemia. It's an unfortunate incident and perhaps the Utah Diabetes Center will see this as a learning opportunity. If the individual didn't have an appt or isn't even a patient, then that makes it a little more unfortunate. Perhaps is was a random act and won't be repeated.

As a type 1 dibetic, he could have evn had thyroid conditions that made him act like that. I agree that someone should have checked his sugars. Even if they had to traq him to do it. It's unfortunate that the clinic didn't think of this. When does health care begin to care about their patients?
at least these health workers | 3:39 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
were doing their jobs and not like some places that are smaller where all they do is put so much stock on the latest scandal...sometimes it is happening right under their noses...then they spend all their ingenious time hiding out in the x ray room rather than help out!! If the shoe fits, buy it!!

I bet it was one of those BYU fans that just can't accept the fact that they lost.

Prozac and all other SSRI-type anti-depressants actually "CAUSEs" akesthesia...extremely violent behavior in 3% of all cases. It's on the manufactures label.

S0, Do the math sheeple-- 25 million users X a very tiny 3% = 750,000 violent wack-os hyped on pharmacueticals.

FYI, type II diabetes and liver damage are also side-effects of anti-depressants....read the labels!!!
I say insulin shock | 5:39 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
I worked for driver licensing in Wa and saw many times how people would drive crazy and it turned out to be insulin shock. They would blow lights, speed, evade police, & drive in the wrong lane. Reports indicated that the person seemed oblivious to their actions.

I never saw reports of people driving crazy because they were on anti depressants. I have however seen people under the influance of stupidity behaving crazy.

My mother had diabetes and never took anti depressants. I have taken anti depressants and have never had diabetes. (and have never gone crazy)
one that was attacked | 4:54 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Well I was the person who deflected his punch. He was't diabetic, he wasn't our patient at all. He left the ER room and some how ended up here. He was an ill individual that needed help. I have delt with "insulin shock" and know what to look for.
