BYU football: Coach, team come to Hall's defense

takes risks | 8:38 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
"Hall takes risks because BYU is losing?"

Like throwing a pick with 30 seconds in the half because they are down by three so they can go down by ten?

Like throwing a pick when they are about to take the lead?

RUN THE BALL, ANAE.

Look someone off once in awhile, Max. Throw to the blue and white.
BYU defense | 9:07 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
People keep mentioning BYU's defense. Did they have a defense? You couldn't tell by watching the game. Blame belongs to Hall and Anae and Mendenhall. Basic football 101, when running the football, you protect it. Bone head fumble. When the running game is working, stay with it. As head coach, you are ultimately responsible for what is going on.

Hopefully they can learn from their mistakes and improve. Hopefully they will be able to recruit some defensive players for the future. There's these places called JCs where Bronco could look.

#1- Hall telegraphs his passes.
#2- He is at his best when he is looking at the whole field and not just a Collie.
#3- Unga and Vakapuna would have both rushed for many yards had the Y kept the ball on the ground. The Utes couldn't stop them.
#4- Let's have some practices involving live contact.
#5- Teach the DB's how to play close man and get them up on the line of scrimmage and bump the receivers. They were playing 10 yards off.
#6- Live contact drills.
#7- Recruit some Jr. College DB's.
#8- Props to the defense. They stopped the Utes enough to win the game.
#9- Quit telegraphing passes to Collie.
#10- Quit throwing to where recievers are supposed to be and actually throw to them where they are.

Could have been worse | 9:49 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Am I the only one that realizes on two of the three touchdown drives for BYU and the opening field goal Utah dropped two picks one by Smith in the end zone and two by Mccain I believe. How would that have been 9 turnovers???
No Goat | 10:00 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Hall is no escape goat, it was all his fault. Everyone knew going into the game BYUs D wouldn't play great (they held their own for the most part), Hall just needed to play a good game. You'll win very few games with 6 turnovers

But Hall just kept giving it away when the momentum was turning to BYUs favor. Too bad, maybe next year.
What? | 10:15 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Am I mistaken? BYU's defense gave up 48 points and didn't take the ball away once. Throw Hall under the bus if you must, but at least he was trying to win the game.
we love you | 11:08 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Ray you didn't allow a sack and played your usual game of great intensity. your nephew was watching and proud of you. Matt your also played your heart out and your lil'nephew is so proud of you. Fui, they are so stupid in how they have NOT used you. the miniute you get the ball your movin'.Just remember that the people that love you and support you are proud and love you very much. congrats matt you got this one and let's get a bowl ring. you to Ray.
Disappointed | 11:14 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
I guess that they just weren't living their lives right this year. Bunch of whiners. I heard a funny joke. Bronco goes to heaven and has a nice little house, with a BYU flag in the front yard. Next door he see's a mansion decked out with U of U banners and flags everywhere. Bronco says, why does Whittingham get that, God say, it's mine!
WHY???? | 11:14 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
does BYU sign these kids from Utah?? They afe signing skill players from Utah and een UTah Co. LAvell always descent talent from other states Ca,TX,FL. The team you saw get beat on Sat looked slow and weak. Same against TCU. Wake up BYU and recruit kids who are actually good.
Coaching inexperience! | 11:15 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Robert Anae!

Hey, look back at film. One year, when BYU had a great running game, LaVell Ran the ball down Utah' throat the entire game. Won the game.

Robert, you have no creativity. It took an ENTIRE YEAR to come up with ONE trick play to score!

Unga and Vakapuna could have decimated Utah, then opened the game wide open for Hall.

Doman! Get Hall to check off his receivers, do a little head and eye faking before he looks to his obvious receiver. Is this impossible?

Bronco! No Pads? No hitting? So serious all the time? Where's the emotion? Do you not have any emotion? Even LaVell, with his stone face showed mor emotion. I'm tired of all the Covey talk. Revamp your public image. I can hardly stand to watch the KSL sports show--even if we win. BORING.

Coaching, and preparation lost this game. Hall just played within the game he was given by the coaches.

Some major changes are needed. Bronco needs to NOT be the defensive coordinator! Be the head coach, and learn to be a good one.

Around the water cooler for all you Collie and Harline one liner idiots:

I chose not to wear my red shirt to work today because I was afraid Max Hall would throw a football at me !

Collie is still open . . . and Max is still doing the Haka.

My kid tried to get a Hall Pass at school today but it was intercepted

Max hall was supposed to pass the sacrament in Church on Sunday but it was intercepted.

They are going to make a movie of Saturday's rivalry game. It will be called "Mr. Kruger's Christmas, the sequel"

Go Utes . . . unroll the Tide !
RE: Play with your | 11:27 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Umm, the Haka is not native american, it's a polynesian war dance from New Zealand and was made famous by the New Zealand rugby team, the All-Blacks. If you haven't noticed, many of the players for BYU are polynesian. I'm not crazy about BYU doing it before games, but it's not racist, and it's certainly not native american.

Bronco Mendenhall, after living a full and
honorable life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him
around when they came to a modest little house with a faded Cougars
flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity," said God.

"This is very special, not everyone gets a house up here." The
coach felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up

the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a
3-story mansion that had a glorious 50 foot tall flagpole with an
enormous UTES flag that shimmered in perfectly in the light, and in
every window was the UTE logo.
The coach looked puzzled and asked God "God,
I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was a good
coach, right?. I went to bowl games, sent a bunch of my players on to

the pros, and I
turned around the entire BYU football program."
God said, "So, what's your question?" "Well," said the coach, "Why
does Kyle
Whittingham get a better house than me?" God responded, "Oh that's not
Whittingham's house, that's mine.> > > Go Utes!

I am a BYU grad. BYU's schedule is set years in advance. You don't know what team will show in the meantime. I havne't the foggiest by BYU did NOT run the ball more. Especially with so many balls batted down. We outweighed their defense. The coaches are equally responsible for the calls as well as Hall. Having said that, when the other team is fast and ours is slow, there's always going to be a mismatch. Utah played a GREAT game (it pains me to say that) and I wish them continued success throughout the rest of this year. Next year's a different story.
I am still awaiting BYU's bowl chances.
Jack from Ark | 11:46 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
As I said last week the only poll that counts is the game. We got beat and the UTES deserve the win. As a registered Monday morning quarterback we could have won had Utah not capitalized on our weaknesses, but they did and that game was coached well. All players have bad days and Max is no exception. Looking back we probably should have sat him down for a couple of plays ansd let him regain his bearing. But we didn't and we lost. From the looks this will turn out well for the MWC and we will share is some of the BCS bucks after UTAH gets their expenses. I hope Utah does well in their bowl game and BYU gets a shot in the LV bowl.

Good luck UTAH and GO GOUGARS

Hall's immature and inconsistent. He faced pressure and folded. Lost his composure. He has some good physical skills but is mentally weak. What kind of a seasoned QB spends his time taunting opposing fans before the game.

Hall has demomstated these types of decisions and behaivor in many areas of his life. All of thst goes into his makeup. He doesn't have the character to carry a team and stick with something over pressure. His history reveals that.
Does not have it | 1:50 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Hall is lik Beck, only when everything is going his way will he look good. He does not have "it". He owns this loss, the defense had settled down, then he just unraveled. When is that guy that transferred from Utah State due back?
Todd, Norfolk VA | 2:15 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Hall doesn't know how to fool a defense. He telegraphed time and time again and it cost him at TCU. PUMP FAKE, LOOK OFF A RECEIVER, deception is a huge part of the game and he doesn't have it yet.
That said, he will be better next year.
B.Y.U. Fan | 2:59 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
No question we didnt play well enough to win. I hope Utes get a tough opponent. Pitt the last time, thats a flat out joke. I would love to see Utah vs. Florida matchup, then Utah will be humbled.
Hall is just fine! | 3:03 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
ute fans worry about your own QB, WE LOVE OURS!

Any time a QB stands up to an opponent who rushes the field trying to pick a fight BEFORE the game...He's my man! Haka on the yewts...

Check the posts... Most of the Hall bashing is from BYU fans!!!
Jason, Logan | 4:08 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
A better guy couldn't take the fall. I am not a Ute or BYU fan and I have only seen Hall play twice this season. Both times he got a personal foul penalty, not to mention before the Utah game he was out there standing behind his team calling the utes on while the refs were trying to stop a fight. He is an unsportsman like jerk, and sadly that kid from the Mormon School has embarrassed me and my religion. Way to represent.
To 8:34 poster | 4:16 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Uh--hold on a second about the haka. You mean to say--Polynesians deciding to perform a custom from their own culture, and letting the white players follow along for team unity, is racist?

Question, too: What's with the Native American reference? The haka has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Native Americans. As said above, it's a Polynesian custom.

Well, then. I think those simple facts say a lot more about your background, motives, and assumptions than it does about BYU or the haka. In the future, 8:34, please post informed commentary.

Better to be dead than red!!

We love our COUGS...we have great young men representing the University...we are proud of their play on the field and their many accomplishments off the field.

Forget about the game in SLC, we'll get them next year in Provo and we'll win with class...something they don't have at that SLC college.

GO COUGS!!
Poor BYU Fans... | 4:21 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
... and I mean poor, from reading these posts.

Max Hall actually had a really good year. Where were all you armchair coaches during the first 11 games?

Typical BYU fan fickleness. I hope you realize how much you all are embarrassing yourselves.
Anonymous | 4:26 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
This would have all been avoided if BYU would have RUN the ball. Unga averaged almost 8 yards a carry, Fui had a great game, and even Hall averaged 6 yards a carry. Why keep throwing the ball when you can march down the field while eating up the clock?
Max Hall had a horrible game, but what about the play calling? If BYU runs the ball they take the momentum at half time and win the game.
RE: To Hall @3:25 p.m. | 4:33 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
"Most of the Hall bashing is from BYU fans!!!"

True, however you define a "BYU fan." But still, can you blame "Max Hall is Just Fine"? I mean, how many of these "BYU fans" are really supporting their own team and people right now? They may as well be Utah or Wyoming fans for all the loyalty, compassion, and charity they're showing right now to their own people.

Truly, truly disappointing. One bad game and they fall to pieces. How pathetic is that?
No, Max, No. | 4:49 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Max Hall must have been paid off by a Ute fan! Even a poor quarterback can't throw that many interceptions, and top it off with a stupid fumble, even if they deliberately TRIED!

Max Hall has EVERY reason to feel badly! He SINGLE HANDEDLY gave the game away to Utah!

You want loyalty?? Where is the loyalty when you are giving away the ball, Max? Where is the loyalty when you are throwing away the game?

If you want loyalty, you have to EARN it!
AZ Coug | 5:14 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
I am behind Max Hall all the way. He is a great QB that can have an awesome bowl game and senior year. He will not fold-it is in his blood. Max's granddad and uncle have their names in the ASU hall of fame.

I am behind the coaches and players 100%. If BYU wins a bowl, it will be the 3rd top 20 finish in a row. You have to go back a ways to find that stat matched.

I would like know why BYU did not run more in the that game, but that is because I am an engineer and I analyze everything. I love to see teams play smash mouth football and inflict their will upon other teams. Coulda-shoulda-woulda.
Maybe Next Year | 6:13 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Max you need to work on playing the same way when behind as you do when your ahead. If you want to play the key position you need to play the whole part. Keeping your cool was key. The change in the game came with the interception right before the half and the personal foul. The defense is what it is but the offense is what got the team this far. Work on the running skills as a drop back QB is a thing of the past in college football. Better luck next year.

Talked to some Utah fans - they voted Hall Player of the Game!

"I mean, how many of these "BYU fans" are really supporting their own team and people right now? They may as well be Utah or Wyoming fans for all the loyalty, compassion, and charity they're showing right now to their own people."

Being loyal to a team doesn't mean turning a blind eye to their faults. Being a sports fan has nothing to do with compassion or charity, even though we wish more fans had these traits. If anything, being a fan means you are keenly aware of where your team is lacking. Saying that Max Hall was terrible, that they should have run the ball more, and that the coaches didn't game plan well enough does not make me any less of a fan.

Max Hall had a historically bad performance. "Quest for Interceptions" is now as much a part of BYU history as, "4th and 18" and "Beck to Harline."
re:Provo Dad | 6:24 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
That joke was funnier when Magna Ute posted it last week.

Did you think it was new, or just something classless to throw in the mix.

Try something original, or your own stuff.

Right now it is the stupidest post of the day.

Not because we as Ute fans don't get it, it's just not fresh.
Buster-BYU fan | 6:37 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
From the cheap seat I sat in in the North West endzone, we could see the plays open up.

Utah did a fantastic job in hiding their DB's and not letting on what the coverage was. I, personally give those interceptions to Anae, for not running the ball more, and the Utah defensive coaches for preparing a brilliant gameplan and their players for executing it flawlessly.

Max, at QB, gets the glory and the grief. I believe that Anae left him out there by himself. Max did what he could with what Anae gave him. Max will shine next year, BYU has a good schedule. I have high hopes for next years team.

A quick note: every Utah fan that sat by us was classy and respectful. We all complimented each other on good plays, and wished each other good luck in the different bowl games.

I can see that real Utah fans are a classy group, and the Ute fans trolling these boards are not the ones that showed up at RES.

Good luck Utah, you earned your spot in the sun Saturday. Enjoy it while it's there. It can never be taken away from you.
RE: No Max No | 6:41 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Don't you think you're taking a mere football game way too seriously? Back away from the ledge, pal. Sheesh--you'd think Max Hall went out of his way to ruin the game, just for YOU.

Five words: It's over. Let it go.
craig | 7:19 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
The byu defense was soft and giving. Since Max Hall got credit for all the wins, he needs to also take credit for this loss with no excuses. Go Max
Aaron | 7:41 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Byu could have run the ball more, that would have alleviated some of the pressure off of Hall. I feel bad for Utah, they're going to get spanked in their bowl game.
RE: Bundy | 6:16 p.m. | 8:02 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Your point that fans don't turn a blind eye to the faults of their team is appreciated--and valid. No, nobody expects Little Miss Pollyanna Sunshine "Everything's All Right." Thank you. A number of problem-seeing posters--see craig@7:19 and Aaron@7:41, for instance--ARE in control. That's to be expected.

But MY point is that this mean-spirited attitude of turning on your own, as seen in far too many other posts, is nothing more or less than sheer hypocrisy. Just because Utah wins doesn't seem to be a reason to eat your own young. Holy cow--you'd think something SERIOUS of LASTING CONSEQUENCE had actually happened.

Something tells me the "Quest for Perfection" never meant perfectly boorish behavior from so-called "BYU fans"--who, let it be pointed out, are SUPPOSED to know better. Aren't they? Right?
Utah Fan | 9:23 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Hey cougars relax...we UTE fans were worried about Johnson all year and somehow he has improved! I only have one complaint about Hall...Did you see his interview were he said,"I'm going to go home to my wife and kid...theres more to life than football" FUNNY COMING FROM A GUY WHO HAD A "Y" SHAVED IN HIS HAIR!!!!!!!
Roosterblue | 10:16 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Lets see for all of you Hall haters, or should I say uneducated sports fans that claim Hall folds under the pressure. Just this year alone he lead the Y in three comeback victories with the clock under two minutes. Against TCU he threw for over 280 yards when he was running for his life while no other QB could throw against them. He is technically a sophmore QB. He threw for over 3800 yards last year as technically a Freshman and 3600 this year and a 4th and 18 play. Against Div 1 talent. He has been talked about by people a whole lot smarter than you, as a Heisman candidate. And for all of you that just seem to want to hurt him including his so call BYU Fans he doesn't and won't read your smut. I guess you guys have never had a bad day. You guys are pathetic. Too bad for the Utes he will be back and for you Byu Hall haters he will always be there to talk to you and sign an autograph. Get a grip it is a FOOTBALL "GAME."
Linus | 10:28 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
All year long we watched Max Hall lock on to his intended receiver right from the snap. It is a bad habit he simply must break if he ever wants to beat quality opponents. Now we don't know whether or not the quarterbacks coach or the head coach ever worked on this weakness; but if they didn't, then much of the blame for the loss to Utah must fall on these coaches.

And, much of the credit for Utah's win must be given to the Ute coaches for great scouting, great preparation, and great frustration imposed on Max Hall. They obviously recognized Hall's bad habit and capitalized on it big time.

I say Max Hall can still be a Heisman quality quarterback if his coaches can help him overcome this flaw in his play. I say, do it before our bowl. Go Cougars! Go Utes! Kill the BCS!
5 picks... | 11:50 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Could have been 6 or 7? How about 12? We counted on the DVR how many of his passes went into Ute defender's hands or off their numbers and it was definitely 12. This was clearly the case of Favre-itis, i.e. trying to force throws when the play isn't there, ex. risk-taking with hope of big rewards. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. To Hall's credit, this is his only game this year that it nailed him. He'll get better and learn from the errors he made in this game.
Anonymous | 2:03 p.m. Nov. 25, 2008
My thought at the end of the game was "thanks Max for giving us a great year" and "at least we have a team from Utah going to the BCS"
Hall is No Beck | 5:02 p.m. Nov. 25, 2008
Are you people serious when you say Hall is no Beck. He is one play a Beck to Harline away from not beating Utah. He beat Utah one time on the last play. I don't want to say he didn't earn it but Utah is 2 imcompleted passes away from Owning BYU for what 6 or 7 years. think about it. 2 great teams 2 great programs. You are all awesome.
