Good article. You handled the loss with class. That is an impressive stat that the Cougars are 1-20 against ranked teams.
Go Utes in the bcs, again!!
Booger | 11:31 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Did you say national recognition?????

Who have you ever beat? You have never beat #1 Ranked Miami. You have never beat a top ranked Kansas State? Who have you ever beat any team that was any good? No one and you know it. I have lived in Ohio, Indiana, Alabama, California, Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and now Washington. Nobody there knew anything about Utah Football. Many knew very well that BYU Football has had a great tradition and we have beat teams that they Utes couldn't.

Remember your home game against Boise State where your were utterly embarrassed. That is what will happen if you play Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Alabama, or USC.

And to make matters worse, I love the fact that we will beat your beloved Utes in Round Ball.

"You think the books you read or teach is about a tamed world."

I work in medicine, not in books. I care for the "demarginalized" of society--my professional world is not a "tamed world." I have witnessed all aspects of human behavoir. I have been threatened, criticized, and belittled. I see the worst sides of humanity, revealed as they face disease and death. But I have never witnessed behavoir from supposedly rational beings such as what I witnessed last night.

I know what a rivalry is. I have attended Ohio State-Michigan. But I also know what simple human decency is. I would be proud of my fellow fans for supporting their team with enthusiasm. To have middle fingers around me raised, to hear what I heard, and to witness the behavoir I witnessed made me anything but proud.

So don't talk to me as if I sit in an ivory tower and know nothing of human behavoir nor of rivalvry, competition, and enthusiasm. There are certain limits to enthusiasm, in which a "mob" mentality consumes rational thought and tolerates normally intolerable behavoir. There is no place for that in any aspect of human society, and certainly not in sports.

Get job utah for the win.

Here is what was noticed before and after the game. First, it was a UofU coach who started the Utah bench clearing during the Haka, which no other team has issues with even on their own field, and after the game when a U of U football player tries to start a fight with a BYU Coach shows the BSC what kind of team Utah is. Sportsmanship starts with the head coach, and Whit has shown his sportsmanship in the Wyoming game last year, the end of the BYU game this year. You can say all you want, but I would rather loose with class then win with no Class. Congrads to the cougs on how they demonstrated themselves after the game. And to the few thousand class utah fans, congrads on the 12-0 season.

Um, Oregon State looks like they will be going to the Rose Bowl this year. Are you trying to say the Beavers are "nobody"

And no zoob has any business talking about Utah's loss to BS Uni a couple years ago when the TDS ALSO got thumped by the broncos.

ITS A RIVALRY GAME!!! If you don't expect stupid things to happen, then get out of your FANTASY WORLD
Re Wash coug and embarrassed | 12:34 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
To Washington coug, a Ute alum may not be 'smart enough' to coach your team, but one was smart enough to be you school's president. Think before making silly comments.
To Embarrassed facultiy, you can claim all you wanat that your family was insulted for 'no reason other than a blue shirt' but I dont believe it. I have been to enough byu-utah games to know that it goes both ways and I have NEVER seen someone attacked simply because of a shirt color. I have seen both fans act like fools. Last night I had 20 people over my house to watch the game, byu and Utah fans, we had fun just watching the game, not acting like fools insulting each other or making up stuff on measage boards. Football is meant to be fun, not as a means to start more fights, so sit back and enjoy the game folks.
Embarrassed Utah faculty | 12:45 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
"Pleaaaassseee!!! Are you trying to make us believe that you are actually a Prof at the U."

Of course I'm a professor. I'm a tenure track assistant professor in the school of medicine. I'd post my name and contact information on here, but based on what I saw last night, I don't want to have personally directed toward me more irrational behavoir and criticism.

"Stupid things" are expected. But as my father walked to the restroom, several fans--on several different occasions--yelled profanities at him. One had the audacity to use a rolled-up paper and shout these repeatedly inches from his ear.

The things I saw last night disgusted me. I know irrational behavoir goes both ways. But this was too much. I will continue to support the educational, research, and academic missions of the U, but won't support the athletic department. A program which tolerates such behavoir should not be supported. I will not renew my season tickets.

The president of Ohio State actually issued an apology to Texas fans a few years ago for the actions of some Ohio State fans. Something needs to be done to curb this sort of behavoir and create a better atmosphere.

re: re wash cough andEmbarrassed | 12:54 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I went to the last Lavell win at RES and I can absolutely say that the fans attacked and insulted us because of our blue shirts.
My mission in Poland we saw soccor "hooligans" attack each other because of the color scarf they wore.
Some fans enjoy the fight more than the game. I saw this as a HS student years ago at an Alta Bball game where their fans were pushing us around after a win looking for a fight.
Embarrassed Utah faculty | 12:57 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
"I have NEVER seen someone attacked simply because of a shirt color."

I wish I were making these things up. I wouldn't have believed it if I had not witnessed it myself. My father is one of the more mild-mannered people you will meet. His only provocation was a blue shirt with a 2-inch-by-one-inch BYU logo. There's not much to enjoy when a fan is intentionally shoving into after each Utah score, middle fingers are raised around you, and profanities are repeatedly shouted at you.

I had intended to sit back and enjoy the game, and expect some animosity and taunts based on my father's loyalty. But this was beyond anything I have witnessed before or had imagined.

Justify it how you will--rivalvy, enthusiasm, support--but you have to draw the line somewhere. Those who encourage or condone such behavoir are only contributing to the problem. I don't care where you are or where your loyalty lies--you have to place limits on enthusiasm.

I think I've posted enough on here. Believe what you will. I don't blame you for thinking I'm making this stuff up--if I hadn't been there, I'd have a tough time believing it, too.

Oregan State is no powerhouse. PAC10 is terrible this year. Beat a good SEC team and I will admit that Utah has finally got a quality win to give them some National Recognition.

re: re: booger | 1:52 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
You're a sign seeker, my friend. A Craig James. A Bob Stoops. A Bryant Gumbel.

People said the same things about the Utes 4 years ago...then they promptly smashed the Big-East champ Pitt.

"yeah, well that's just the Big-East team"

Excuse me? Aren't they BCS too?

Plus, they said the same thing after Boise State beat OU.

"yeah, well that took overtime and a little luck by the broncos"

Wrong. BSU was winning nearly the entire game. It was OU that was lucky they didn't get embarrassed earlier.

So then what? It was all erased when Hawaii ran into a Buzz-saw with Georgia. And so were back to square one.

"Beat an SEC team and then we'll belive" they say.

Whatever. I don't belive that. The Utes could win the BCS bowl again this year vs Alabama and you will still go on believing what you want.

-There's more positive comments here than I expected, especially after a season full of narrow minded uniformed statements.

-No way officials should let fans on the field. Somebody is going to get hurt. Seriously.

To bYu Fans: | 4:57 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
To all of you who keep saying, "wait until next year, because we return all of our starters." Let me give you a lesson of sorts, Sunday School, if you will. (1)BYU loses its offensive line!! In my opinion the bYu offensive line was the best group on your team this year. (2) bYu's defense will be worse next year than this year!! My predicition is 4 losses for bYu next year. Utah on the other hand returns its 10 of 12 starters on defense!!!!!!!! Utah does lose BJ, Brown, Casteel, Godfrey, and Mack. The only O lineman we lose is Conely. Yes Asiata is only a Jr!! Don't forget about Louks, Manis, and Devonte Christopher who are all talented enough to start next year at QB. UTAH WILL BE FINE NEXT YEAR. WHY DON'T YOU Yners worry about the troubles down south!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Booger the Coogar....Just like a TDS fan to live in the past. "Goshdarn it, we won a national championship 24 years ago".."Heck, we beat #1 Miami in 1990".........1990!!!!!! If you're going to hype your past accomplishments to cover your journey into mediocrity, at least pick events that happened within the past decade or so. LOTS OF BITTER FANS. But I don't blame you. As Bronco would say, it's tough to be humbled so often.
The Quest | 5:37 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Bronco has a weird way of trying to get the most out of his guys. He preaches that he wants young men that can work towards perfection, and rise to challenges on and off the field, but then he goes out and dumbs down his schedule. Perfection is not going 12-0 against the weakest teams you can find. A quest for perfection means challenging yourself, and rising to meet those challenges.

BYU played 3 teams this year with a winning record, and looked horrible in 2 of them. Obviosly those kids are not learning to rise up and meet challenges, probably because Bronco doesn't allow them to be challenged very often.

COME ON PEOPLE, BE REAL!!! Since your team lost, you have to make up stories to make yourselves feel better, it is sad to watch, but kinda funny.

I am a BYU fan but i do not think Brian Johnson is better than Hall. He played well last night but he was playin against a BYU de that's been fell apart. Hall stuggled in the big games but Johnson struggled in every game. This was his best game as a ute and it wasn't anything impressive. I don't think he should be offensive player of the year but he's the quarterback of an undefeated team so he may as well.
BYU Actually Won | 7:06 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008

RE: Embarrassed @ 9:48 a.m. | 7:16 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Yes, there IS a way to change this: STOP PLAYING THE BYU/UTAH GAME.

I'm serious. As Jan Jorgensen rightly remarked, there are jerk fans on both sides. If it continues, the violence will escalate. If the jerk fans can't control themselves, as seems apparent, give the rivalry a 5-year break. Strike a deal with the MWC to play an additional non-conference game that would count instead.

I for one wouldn't be sorry to see it go AT ALL. I see no good, but plenty of the opposite, coming of the bad blood building between the two schools.

Some of you will cry as if your favorite toy's been yanked away at Christmas, whining about how fun it is to talk smack, trash your opponent, and the like. I ask you: What's so fun about embarrassing yourselves? You're giving in to harassment, bigotry, and the worst humanity has to offer. That's FUN?

If the rivalry's out of control, it's time to give it a cooling-off period. Seriously.
cougar dreamland | 7:46 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
When you look into the cougars past you will notice that they have never done well in big games. The won alot of conference championships, in a time that the conference was awful! They lose a ton of bowl games against inferior teams. They are no different this year then they have been in the last several years, the league is just better! In fact, this might be there best team in the last 10 years. Maybe the second best. The one thing that never changes, is BYU fans think they have done more than they have. They are a famous for not doing much on a national level. The never get better than about 25th to 30th ranked team in the country. Sometimes that wins league titles, sometimes that makes them 3rd place.

I am a student at the University of Utah and have been going to games for the past 15 years. I have been to many Utah/BYU games and I agree that there is a place for a certain amount of tenacity between the fans. But what I saw on Saturday is worse than anything I have seen before. I was embarrassed to be sitting in the MUSS and embarrassed to be a University of Utah student after the actions of my fellow classmates. The entire game, middle fingers were displayed(after every play), profanities used(I understand that is part of going to the game but it was execessive), fights almost broke out, BYU fans had their flagpoles broken and hats stolen, and derogatory comments were made towards mormons(Do these individuals realize that the majority of Utah fans and the Utah student body are also mormons). While I will continue to support Utah football, I can only hope my fellow fans will learn some class for the upcoming games.

EVERY RIVALRY in sports deals with this, the diference is that it is way dialed down in Utah compared to other states.
Comments from outside observer | 8:30 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Many Utah fans with class should really be embarrassed by the way so many other fans carried-on at that game. What a disgrace to the school and the State of Utah. Some BYU fans, not so many, are classless as well--that's another story.
Johnson needs to wake up if he thinks he can even compete with of the top Big 12 or SEC teams, or Ohio State or USC. The Utes would be plundered and destroyed by any of them. They will end up with a close win if they get the ACC or Big East champ.
Coming from Big 10 country, I hope our Buckeyes get to destroy the Utes and send them back to la la land, and that classless stadium in Utah.
As an observer and semi-follower of Meyer (who lost to Michigan in the bowl game last year), I note that this is the last year for his recruits at Utah. I would probably "rethink" things if I were hoping my team was going to be good next year, or any year from now on. None of your other offensive players were good, but you do lose your kicker, and he's your whole team.

I worked at the U of U for four years. I worked in parking and tried very hard to help out everyone that came to the games. I worked through the other undefeated season. Many U of U patrons were great but there were always the idiots. I have been to games at Utah and BYU. BYU fans know what is going to happen when they try to park. Utah fans think if they threaten the attendant they are fine. I cannot count the times I was cussed out or threatened. One guy threatened me in front of his 8 year old. I graduated and started a new job. As I watched the game many situations came back into my head. I know a rivalry will never be good but I hope that some Utah fans start to become civilized. It would make the rivalry even better.
I cheered for both teams. I wanted Utah to win because they will be a great BCS team. I think the teams played an emotional great game. GO UTES!!!

How do you know when UTAH football is great? All the cougar fans can talk and type about are the fans. I was at the game, and no I wasn't drunk and no I didn't curse any coug fans. I did ask them nicely to leave in the 4th quarter though. Does that make me a bad fan? Go cry, you got worked. Max Hall isn't deserving of all the Heisman talk he got all year. And to think byu and their fans really thought they were going to win, they really did. Just like in 04 when Todd Watkins guaranteed a byu win over UTAH. Rise and POUT the cougars are out!!!
Utah Fans | 9:59 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I Hope Utah can win the BCS game mediocre opponent(ACC, Big East) or not(SEC, Big 12). It is great that Utah has been able to rise to this level again and that BYU & TCU are ranked teams simultaneously. I hope every year we can have this type of game between BYU, TCU, and UTAH both teams being ranked with BCS implications. My fear is that Utah will do this once every 3-4 years and that in between the stadium will sit half full for most home games as has been the case for the last 3, but maybe now Ute fans will make the necesarry commitment and get to the games win or lose in the comming years.

When BYU stops the sloganeering and starts getting some passion...then they will go to a BCS game. They are better than the last 3 yrs of the Crowton era but because of Bronco's "Quest for Perfection" campaign their 10-2 season seems like a 6-6 season instead. The BYU fans of my family seemed pretty down and out today because they got sucked into all of the hype and big wins over bad programs.

Movin' On | 1:05 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
The 2000's have been better to Utah then to BYU. This year could begin the Wittingham legacy, but all of this will mean nothing if Utah gets beat in their BCS bowl game. If they go up against a Big East or ACC team Utah will win by at least 14. If they get put up against a Florida, Oklahoma, or Texas They are going to have a hard time putting 14 points up on the board let alone 48. One of the telling stats from saturdays game is BYU's 419 yards to Utah's 415. Utah has got to tighten up on defense. BYU ran over 200 yards on Utah, and only punted twice, Whereas Utah punted 4 times. If the Utes go up against a team that can take up time with a great running game the Utes are goning to be in trouble. Hopefully The Utes can carry the MWC banner high and avoid the mistakes of Hawaii.
To Embarrased Utah Faculty | 1:36 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Thank you for speaking up. As a BYU freshman from the South (where football is pretty big and fans have ALOT of passion), I went to my first BYU-Utah game in 1994 with a relative of mine who is part of a family that includes former Utah great players and Bob Rice (RICE-Eccles stadium). Naively, I thought that people would be civil to me while I wore a BYU sweatshirt to the game and sat in the middle of the UofU section. As I walked up to my seat a grandpa dropped the F-bomb on me. At halftime when I went to get a hotdog a Ute fan started verbally abusing me "F-ing mormon, you're gonna go on an f-ing mission, come back and get f-ing married, and have a bunch of f-ing kids", (is that supposed to be an insult?) After that, I was angry and began to cheer loudly after each good play BYU had, and had snowballs fly by my head each time I stood up. Because of that experience, I refused to go a RES BYU-UofU game since.

Grow some class, Ute fans, you are a blight on a great university and an awesome football team.
Faculty and Yner fans | 6:41 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
You think Utes fans are mean? Come to a CSU and CU game where the SWAT team has to tear gas the fighting tailgaters or a CU and nebraska game where they have to stop the game and remove the CU student section.

I have been to a lot of UTE football games and the fans I have interacted with have been fine...they may swear some and say "FU BYU" but believe me that is tame in college football. I have sat in Red at LES stadium and been "Hated" all the same too.

Nicest fans I think: Air Force.
CougATtheU | 10:48 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Congrats Utes. Let's hope for the sake of the conference you get a credible opponent, and you show them what MWC football is all about.

I despise the nastiness I see on both sides. I think the term TDS or TUN is beyond stupid, and should have left with Urban Traitor.

Let's dream of a day when we cheer for our neighbor team 364 days a year, and realize that we're in a bigger battle together--to show the rest of the country that we can play with the big boys.

BYU had more than a few chances to take the lead in this game, and they didn't get the job done. The calls were fair, the outcome was determined by a better Utah team, and a too-easily-irritated BYU QB.

Go BYU, Go Utah. Let's do what we can to win some respect for the conference.
QC AZ | 11:37 a.m. Nov. 24, 2008
Re: respect in rivalry
Couldn't help but notice in postgame comments on MTN not a word from Whittingham about respect for his opponent, the hard fought game, effort etc. Although Bronco is admittedly a dry post game interview, he never fails to praise his opponent and respect their hard work and effort, even in defeat. I knew Fred W. as well as Kyle and his brothers back in the day. They were/are fierce competitors. I'd hate to think that his association with the U would have changed his character so much that he lost respect for his opponent, especially when so much of his family and personal history is directly tied to that opponent. Any respect within this rivalry has to start with the coaches and players. Most of the fans, on both sides, are basically hopeless anyway. Congrats to Kyle and the Utes. I hope they do well in BCS. Thanks for the $ coming to the Cougs! Looking forward to next year already.
