Two and half decades ago the y won a national championship when Reagon was serving his first term. The Utes are going to their second BCS bowl in the current decade. Enough said.
BYU keeps running the ball... | 10:57 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
...and BYU wins the game 38-34. Blame Hall all you want but the BYU O-line was providing the best running attack the Y has seen all year. Why the Coaches kept going to the air after Hall had thrown 5 tipped balls I'll never know. Had they kept running the ball they would have chewed clock, kept BJ on the sideline and worn down the Utes defense. They could have kept Collie in the game plan by running direct snaps as well as hand offs. I place no blame on Hall, players can have off nights. It's the coaches job to adjust accordingly. BYU coaches are to blame. Any football mind could see that. That 0-line for BYU was winning the ground game. The coaches should have stayed on the ground. They didn't. They chose to air it out, time and again, even though Unga, Fui, and even Collie were running for eight yards every down. BYU's players actually came to play, it was the coaches who were out coached.
thou shalt love the UTES! | 10:57 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
...love seeing that goose egg in the Ute loss column

Harline and Collie are still open, its just too bad Hall can't get them the ball.

This one is on Max Hall, but he'll learn from his mistake. Next year is our year. Go cougars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
National Champs? | 10:59 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
BYU would have NEVER been national champs under the current BCS system, that's just a fact. Yet we honestly are still hearing about something that happened before the current players were even born?!! Utah had a perfect season in 2004 and would have been NATIONAL CHAMPS under the 1984 rules. Utes have TWO BCS births, BYU ZERO. Like it or not, BCS is what we do now and the Cougs have made ZERO appearances!
Re: Cougars Fan | 10:59 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Thanks for your opinion. Is there some reason we should have expected anything different from you?

Max Hall had the over (53 1/2) as well tonight....
Tom in South Carolina | 11:01 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Yes I listened to the game on the internet, and I take exception to "Utes are still....". Ron Morris in the Columbia SC The State (biggest daily in SC) referred to the Utes this morning as "The Utes of America" while predicting the Utes would bust the BCS again with a 42-33 victory. Sorry but that doesn't sound like a lack of respect to me. And this is SEC country (USC - no, not THAT USC) and ACC country (Clemson). The only people that even begin to mention BYU are LDS and/or BYU alums. When I have people at my work commenting about a Utah game they saw part of, but they don't even mention a BYU game, that tells me that you just might be mistaken.
fdg | 11:01 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I congradulate the Utah Utes. As a BYU fan I say you were the best team and should have won. As I read these comments I have not seen anything about how bad the Y's defence is. They played 15 -20 yards of the recievers all night. and Utah passed to the wide outs to the sideline all night and could pick up a 1st down when ever they wanted. The Y played this way all year and Utah exploited that weakness of BYU's defence. I for one will cheer for the Utes in their bowl game.

Face and love it!!!!!
Go Utes!!!!
Anonymous | 11:03 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
After what Oklahoma did to Texa Tech today, we should be happy that neither BYU or Utah have to play them.

They are clearly in a league of the own.
Go ahead BYU fans. . . | 11:06 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Go ahead BYU fans start thinking about next year. Next year. . . that's next year UTAH KILLED YOU THIS YEAR, THIS WASN'T EVEN A CONTEST!!!!! GO UTES!!! (the original and repeat BCS busters!!! (how many times has BYU done that, oh right 0. Until you get to it, stop saying your team is better!!!
BYU Fan | 11:08 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I'm a huge BYU fan, but I won't make excuses. Utes played well and handed our butts to us. Johnson tore us up, and what can you say about Kruger. What a stud. The loss hurts, but I hope the Utes thrash whoever they get in their BCS game. The only solace I can recieve is that at least we'll get some of the money for the Utes good year. Hopefully we'll be more prepared next year and Hall won't turn it over 6 times. Good luck Utes, and go Cougars!
Whiners | 11:09 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I was at the game tonight and once again Cougar fans are Whining the entire game about this call and that call. Whine about this: Utah Utes going to 2nd BCS bowl this decade. What slogan are the Cougs going to come up with next year. Wait! I have a good for the offseason " Quest for a new quarterback that can keep his head and handle the pressure." Hall has a very evident snap mechanism when things don't go his way. Add that to your Faith, Family, Football checklist Bronco!
Re: BYU Keeps Running the Ball | 11:10 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
That's quite an ending you conjured up. The part you are missing is what happens when BYU goes to an all running attack? Answer: Utah changes from pass defense to a run defense and limit BYU's run game just like they did at Air Force.

Rather than make up your own game, why don't you just admit that Utah's D had BYU's number all night.

Re: Utes are still 10:43 | 11:10 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I guess when things don't go your way in the present, you live in the past. I understand it must be hard to find anythign BYU has accomplished in the last 10 years. That is why you have to go back 18 years for the Heisman? Must be tuff when you can't come up with anything new.
ok a few points | 11:11 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Just my opinion on this stuff.
1-Aaron said that Utah has yet to play a good team, assuming he's a byu fan, thanks fr making our point clear.
2-Enough with the talk about how classless fans are. I've been to my share of Ute games as well as some big-time SEC and big 12 games. I am yet to see a Ute fan intentionally throw up on the opposing team's bench. If you wear burnt orange to a bar in oklahoma-you will get punked, and vice versa. Please folks, alot of these fans are unruly college kids, let them be. if you don't want to get trash talked as a byu fan, don't show up to RES in blue.
3-Guess what folks, the last drive started with 8, count them 8 minutes to go. It isn't KWhit's job to stop utah, its the kewgs and they coundn't do it.
UteinLaramie | 11:12 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I am a Utah alum currently living in Laramie (not for long) and have to put in my two cents here. Go Utes on a great win! To the classy fans on both sides- thank you. To the zealots on both sides- shame on you- but more so to you who have signed the BYU honor code.

I have attended games in almost every stadium in the conference and of all the ironies have to say that the most hostile environment I have ever encountered was not here in Laramie, but down at LES in Provo. While attending school at the U, I went down to 3 games in Provo and heard more profanity from the Cougars than from anyone else. I had drinks and trash thrown on me and had many people doing their best to incite me to violence. I have read your honor code and being LDS heartily endorse it. You forget that your actions not only reflect upon yourselves and your school, but reflect upon your church- which also happens to be my church. Please show respect to your school and your standards; not zealotry to hypocrisy. Go Utes- lets break the BCS a second time.
84' Champs | 11:13 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Actually BYU was national champs because they were the ONLY undefeated team in the country that year. It was not a fluke. Other teams just lost games they should not have lost and BYU was the lone undefeated team. Had they had a BCS game that year the Y would have been in the title game because they were ranked #1 in the nation at the end of the year. If Utah was the ONLY undefeated team in 04 or 08 there would be a real case for them to play for the National title. No matter what anyone says, it's all irrelevent without a playoff. But don't say BYU wouldn't have won in 84' in the current BCS, because as the only undefeated team in the land and ranked #1 in the nation they would have been in the BCS title game that year, not a meaningless one.
Ute Richie | 11:16 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I am so glad I was there to witness that game. That was the most satisfying win this year. Go Utes!
RE: Tom in South Carolina | 11:16 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
There is no way that you can tell me that Utah is more well known than BYU in the US. The tradition of quarterbacks, winning, football tradition, etc. at BYU is well known among anyone who follows college football.

To say that only LDS alum talk about BYU is crazy. I work with so many sports nuts and none are Mormon and everyone of them knows about BYU past history...more than I do!!

Utes have a good team and will represent the Mountain Conference well but get real!!

P.S. Check the list of players from both colleges that play in the NFL, BYU has about four times as many as UofU
BYU fans | 11:16 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
why is there so much speculation on what if's for you BYU fans, you got your butts handed to you!!! Accept that, and good luck in vegas or San Diego!!!! GO UTES IN THE BCS!!!!!!
Under the current system | 11:18 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
No matter how great Utah is in footbal they will NEVER EVER get what BYU already has,

A National Championship!!
Good team- classless "fans" | 11:27 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Good team. Good players. Good coach. Your "fans", however are fair-weathered and classless. Unga and Reed are laying on the turf and you are cheering. I hope you are proud of yourselves. Next year will be fun when Utah is mediocre again and 27 Utah "fans" will again be attending the home games at the RES becuase all the other "fans" will have jumped off that bandwagon in world-record speed. I have seen it time and time again. Utah fans= fair-weathered and classless. Utah players and coaches= quality.
Where were the Yewts last year? | 11:27 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Oh if we could just post the message boards from last year. All these Yewts would be eating humble pie. "Don't live in the past." Yeah, if I were a Yewt I would say the same thing because we handed it to you the last few years. So this year is yours, you had all your "tough" games at home. Lucky draw. If you went to Oregon State you would have gotten spanked. If you went to TCU he would have hit his field goals...that's right, it was a freshman kicker who rolled out the red carpet to your BCS.
as a BYU fan | 11:28 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I am getting tired of our fans making excuses and living in the past. We can look toward next year, but congradulate Utah on the victory and the great year they had. The game is over, I was there, and we got rocked in the 4th quarter. Good luck Utes in the BCS and go Cougars! (in our ghetto bowl)
Re: 84' Champs | 11:29 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Ok, so if Michigan had beaten BYU at the Holiday Bowl in 1984 (which they almost did) Michigan would have been the National Champs. Is that correct?

If not Michigan, then who? The Holiday Bowl was not a national championship game because only one team had a chance at a national championship and the team they played was terrible.

If we had the BSC system in 1984, BYU would NOT have been national champs. BYU's national championship in 1984 has a big ol' asterisk next to it followed by creation of the BCS. Thank you BYU!

Fast forward to the present...

BYU 24 UTAH 48

difference between milli vanilli and ty detmer?

Milli gave his award back.

Gee i wish i had gotten the heisman trophy and then get annhilated by hawaii and get both my shoulders seperated!
The Holy War | 11:35 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
So the Utes won tonight. Sometimes Evil prevails over Righteousness. It happens. The scriptures talk about it. Just remember to stay true to your faith.
Hey BYU Fans... | 11:36 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
You better hurry, get online and get your rooms booked in Vegas. Try Price-Line! Remember...GO LOWER!

Enjoy your trip to the Las Vegas Bowl against some horrible PAC 10 team like Arizona who will beat you.

If that does not work out for you, there is always the Armed Forces Bowl where you can play a power-house Rice team on a Tuesday with a 12:47 pm kick time. What's the pay day for that bowl game? $427.50!
byu fan- Max Hall | 11:41 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
its okay Hall... dont be so down on yourself!!!
we can always kill utah at home next year for the BCS birth!!
to hardcore ute fan | 11:41 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Breaking the word of wisdom, smoking a joint, etc. like you said, I don't have a problem with that. The thing I have a problem with is the ute fans at the game (and there were many believe me) that called us obscenities (multiple times), taunted my wife, throwed food at us and chanted BCS when a player is layed out cold on the field, etc., etc.,

You have a good team, I'll give you that, but your fans are sadly in general vile and raunchy. Not all of course were like this, in fact the couple next to my wife and I and some others around us were very very nice. And I was in the Crimson Club section. I can't imagine what it was like in other sections. I'm not saying BYU fans are perfect, but I've been to several rivalry games at our stadium and I've never witnessed Ute fans being mistreated like my wife and I were multiple times tonight by multiple ute fans.
From a BYU Fan | 11:41 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Congratulations ute and some of you class y fans. I went to the game and was disappointed from outcome. Some u fans are right down disgusting while others have shown a lot of class. Just like this board some of you are horrible and disgraceful to say the least. For those fans who are a class act I say good luck to you and your team. For those who are the classless act and you know who you are, may you and your team suffer a horrific loss (worst then hawaii) to who ever you play this year and beyond.

BYU in 2009!
'84 Champs | 11:42 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
No reject, Michigan would have never been playing BYU had there been a BCS.

In 1984, BYU was ranked #1 at 13-0 and locked in the Holiday Bowl. Washington was ranked #2 and was locked in the Rose Bowl. Had they had the BCS back then BYU and Washington would have played for the BCS Title.
Hey Chester Cheater | 11:43 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
sometimes your words can come back to bite you in the rear, eh?
But don't feel bad. All you have to do is switch it to: BYU just suffered the most embarrassing day in BYU history. See? All fixed now.
Re: Where were the Utes.... | 11:44 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Now what are you driveling about? Those field goals were missed by TCU's kicker. Neither you nor anyone else know that he wouldn't have missed them had the game been played at TCU and guess what...we will never know because it didn't happen that way.

Here's a scenario for you...
If the field goals had been hit, Utah would have kicked a field goal from the 40 instead of punting and made the 2 point conversion after the touch down. There, Utah STILL wins.

See I can do it too.
Welcome to the 21st century! | 11:44 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Anyone that doesn't think Utah has more national recognition than byu is fooling themselves or living in the past. I travel nearly every week throughout the country. Over the past three years I have been in all 50 states on business. I can tell you that the BCS busting Utah Utes are known by all college football fans. It's now Utah and Boise State that are the better known football programs from the non-BCS conferences.

Utah has now "busted" into the BCS twice. EVERYONE that follows college football knows of the U. of Utah program. BYU hasn't been in the national spotlight for 24 years. That's a very long time.

Older people that followed college sports back in the 60,70s and 80s would know that BYU was known as a strong football program and Utah was a strong basketball program.

Utah and BYU are the flagship universities in the MWC. They are both known programs but it's the U that has the most exposure now.

Tired of GO UTES! | 11:44 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Why is it that almost every Ute post has to end with "GO Utes" Think of something original....
Re: Hey BYU Fans...11:36 p.m. | 11:45 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Hahaha silly..do you not realize that Utah was just playing in that same Armed Forces Bowl last year? Foolish drunk Utah fans! Truly bandwagoners for sure!
NO CLASS | 11:45 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
by the way, all you utah fans have no class what so ever. i was at the game and every time i went up and down the Isle i would get Beer and garbage thrown at me...even some fans behind us spit in my 70 year old grandmas hair.. at least while you guys at LES we treat you with some CLASS!!!! GET A LIFE!!!!
Fans | 11:47 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
So, I am reading these posts and BYU fans are saying how classless Ute fans are and vice versa. You know what? On both sides of the rivalry, unfortunately, fans let the moment get the best of them. I have been to many rivalry games, and the profanity on both sides is the same. (Yes even BYU fans who say it doesn't happen because of the honor code) How good it is to not have to be involved and be a USU fan, we just accept that we aren't that great at all!!!
this is pathetic | 11:47 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
BYU fans are either living in the past "ohhh, BYU were champs in 84!!" Oh please--could you be any more "Uncle Rico"??? Or, they are living in the future: "Next year is our year!"
Oh Puh-LEEZE!!

YOU LOST. IT'S OVER. IT WAS, AND IS, REALLY, REALLY EMBARRASSING FOR YOU.
No amount of "Next year we'll..." or "last year we..." is going to erase this disgrace from BYU.
Get a grip, and accept your loss gracefully.
Re:Good team- classless "fans" | 11:48 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Don't make comments about what went on during the game when you weren't even there. Nobody was cheering when a byu player went down. I was at the game and heard nothing but light clapping when the injured players were helped off the field.
Anonymous | 11:48 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
No dimwit, that was the Poinsettia Bowl
jd | 11:50 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Just some thoughts......

Quest for Perfection jinxed your season, that Bronco can sure ruin a season.

Should the Cougars have gone to the movies this summer to see the Dark Knight, rather than practice?

BYU fans are just as nasty as Ute fans, having attended 29 straight Utah-BYU games, neither is better nor worse than the other. Get off your high horses and quit being pompous.

Where are the "special coins" the team was to carry with them at all times, I think Max lost his.

Doing the "haka" is soooo high school, and disrespectful, but go ahead and think it is cool, NOT!

You do not deserve the Las Vegas Bowl, TCU does.

Why do byu fans insist on chanting the letters b y u, repeatedly 78 times before stopping, it really is annoying and you should be smacked for it.

If Max Hall is voted the MVP of the MWC I will throw up, he does not deserve it.

At then end of the 2004 season, the bottom fell out of Utah, can anyone even imagine how amazing Kyle Whittingham has returned the Utes to glory...and finally...

GO UTES!

Kyle Luekenga | 11:50 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
#54 Kyle Luekenga must make the Cougar fans very proud. He tried to pick several fights prior to the game with Ute players and then topped it off after the game going after Ute FANS! He was totally out of control and a very poor loser. Anyone (Ute or Cougar) who witnessed his actions would agree, he was totally classless tonight. I hope Bronco will disipline him for his actions.
Utah Man Am I | 11:50 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
As far as this season is concerned, BYU is no longer relevant. Utah won tonight, and it doesn't matter what happened any other season.

Utah = W
BYU = L

Ute fans...? | 11:52 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Utah players and coaches not only have to win the game but they have to keep their idiot fans off the field before the game even ends. So idiotic in fact that they forced the goal post down before the game ended. These are the same idiots that tried to take the BYU goal posts down after a win in Provo a few years back. Nobody has any issue with the Utah players and coaches, all pretty classy. It's the Utah Ute fans that stink up the stadiums wherever the game is played.
