There ARE a lot of THINGS, not "there's" a lot of things. Where are the editors????

Barbara.

You are wrong. "Things" is the object of the prepositional phrase starting with "of". So it has no bearing on which form of the verb to use.

"Lot" is the object of the sentence and since that word is singular, "is" would be the appropriate verb. Thus using the contraction "there's" for the phrase "there is" is correct.

So to answer your question, the editors are doing their jobs just fine.

I am thankful I'm not your neighbor because you seem like a stodgy know-it-all.

Whether it's There are or There is, it still should say There's a lot OF things to be thankful for in Utah theater. So, no, the editors are NOT doing their jobs.
