It's a stupid arguement, especially since the WAC is in a revenue-sharing deal with the other non-BCS schools (although it's a smaller piece).

I am alumni of 1984 and for the two years I was at Utah State I loved the school and the education I received there. Great school. At the same time, I had season tickets to BYU and drove south for each home game. It was great. Aggie fans were fun to argue with even though they beat the Cougars in 1982. I can see that the Aggies would have a difficult time cheering for the Cougars, but in the end, they need the money that BSU would bring if they busted into the BCS.

I think it is great that so many good teams from the west are in contention to bust the BCS.

Would someone in Aggie-land please help me understand why it is ingrained in their veins to hate the Y? Does the school offer a "Hate the Y" class? Do the advisers to the student newspaper teach writers to hate? What an irresponsible comment. And, to put it in writing is even more irresponsbile. Is not there enough hate among the opponents of California Proposition 8 to fill the pages of our newspapers? Or if that's not enough, how about those who hate illegal immigrants? Do we have to hate the athletic teams of other universities as well?

Utah fans hate BYU as their most bitter rival and their arrogant, holier-than-thou attitude. Neither Utah nor byu gives a crap about the poor stepchild up in the north hinterland. The rivalry with the Aggies faded away a long time ago. The Aggies need to get into the Big Sky conference and get natural rivalries going with Weber Sate & Idaho State and get over Utah & byu. It's never going to be anymore than it is right now, nothing.

News to me. The U is where Aggies should put their spite. Provo is a private school way down south from Aggieland. It is the U that USU competes the most with - for state funds and new buildings.

I guess here is one Aggie who doesn't care who wins. If you want to talk real football, I suppose we could talk about Auburn down in Alabama. (Sorry - I just spent too much time down there. The South seems to really take football to heart, moreso than I have seen in Utah.)

The Y is only Holier Than Thou because it is...

And if that bugs you, have a nice day because you've got a mental problem where non-existent fights are only in your mind. You've created a conflict of warped perception. I have two daughters who graduated from USU and a son who got his MS degree from USU, and my father in law was Valedictorian there. Funny how all of them thoroughly enjoyed USU and love BYU... and none ever felt they were holier than anyone.

I'm not you, Kent, so that makes me part of "everyone." And I love the Y. Great spirit; great coaches; great players who for the most part exemplify their religious beliefs. What beliefs do you have other than the religion of hate? The holier than thou attitude you speak of is in your eyes only because your conscience bothers you, and it becomes easier to tear someone else down than to change yourself.

Not everyone here hates the Y as much as they hate the U who never misses an opportunity to run up the score. They should be rooting for the Y so they can get some of that BCS $$ to pay off the contract of a great coach that they just fired.

I was a former Aggie student athlete, and I strongly disagree with this article. The Aggies dispise the Cougars and everything to do with that school. Regardless of how much money USU will get it is better for the Utes to win.

Cougar fans don't hate Aggies. We don't even know what an Aggie is. But we do know the Aggies can't play football. Not this year. Not last year. And probably not next year.
Turn your hate into effort. Schedule a few games with some high school teams.
Your team is a sorry bunch. What was the score of the BYU-Utah State game this year? Oh yeah. And it was played in Logan.
Remember, Utes #8, Cougars #16. The Aggies? Nowhere to be seen.
Maybe the Aggie b=ball team might be better. But I doubt it. Then again, the world does need farmers.

Oh please. This is pathetic. I went to Utah state and I love BYU football - as did several of my buddies up there. Those Aggies who pretend that BYU is a big rival are deluding themselves. BYU couldn't care less about USU - at least in football. Bring back John L. Smith, and them maybe we can talk.

What's even more pathetic, though, is when some misplaced and misguided Alabama fan logs on to the Deseret News and tells everybody in Utah that the only real football is down south.

I am a BYU alum and fan who now lives in Logan and works at USU. I had no idea when I moved here how deep the hatred towards BYU is. A person I work has said to me more than once, "All BYU fans are pompous arragent jerks. Many Y fans believe diety helps their athletic programs." This guy is a bishop. I rarely mention BYU because of his strong feelings towards the Y. And when I do, it is not in a boastful way at all. I don't understand how he can stereotype and have such hatred for BYU fans.

It is because of the arrogant trash talking BYU fans who never pass up an opportunity to show their contempt for anything for anybody not "BYU."

With a little decorum and respect you might find some solid supporters among the Aggie faithful.

As for the article. It is a little presumptuous for a sportswriter to ascribe thoughts and feeling to all Aggie fans.

I and many others don't feel the way this article portrays us.

There is no holier-than-thou attitude at BYU. That is in the minds of others. This criticism is really unfair. Most people at BYU are just good decent kids who are trying to do what's right and get an education. Just because you are trying to live certain standards, you get criticized for being "superior" or "holier than thou." I never knew ANYONE at BYU that felt that way.

Mostly the hatred comes from people who are feeling guilty or inferior due to their own personal issues. It isn't easy seeing someone who is trying to do what's right when you know that you are not. That's the whole crux of the issue.

I went to both Utah and BYU. There are good people at both schools. However, I sure did appreciate the atomosphere at BYU after having experienced the "open mindedness" at Utah. At BYU the attitude toward Utah is a really strong rivalry. At Utah the attitude toward BYU is hatred and religious bigotry. I'm sorry, but that's just the truth.

It's funny about those who point the finger of scorn stating that EVERYONE at BYU thinks they are holier than thou. Those who served missions know there is a lot of unfair prejudice against the Mormon church. Then they will come back from their missions and attend Utah or Utah State and carry that same unfair prejudice against BYU.

Not everyone at BYU thinks they are hoier than thou. However, since it makes no sense to argue with total stupidity why even try. But it's interesting that those who keep saying others are holier than thou end up being holier than thou by that very belief. So just who is holier than thou. Lucky it's not me. I think there are plenty of good people (whether LDS or not) at Utah and Utah State. They even have some good people at BYU.

It's the HIGH SCHOOL perception that so many college Freshman have of others. There are even some Seniors and graduates that are still Freshmen. You can see them on every campus. They act like little kids. Gooooooooo BYU!!!!!!!!!!

There is definitely a "Holier than Thou" attitude. from regarding BYU. I have experienced it time and time again both in athletics and professionally.

I am an active LDS member who has served as a Bishop twice. I have seen BYU teams/fans come to town in an area which is mostly non-LDS, and as a result, seen missionary work in those communities stop for months.

My professional colleagues who work at BYU have made it clear that those who choose to work for BYU are more righteous than those who work at other Universities. We remain friends and colleagues despite that sense of arrogance... They can't help it, they have been taught that they are better than everyone else.

Your contention that the "Holier than Thou" attitude is only in the minds of those outside of the BYU bubble is a great example of what I am talking about.

Sorry for the rant, but after seeing this attitude for decades, it is a hot-button issue for me.

BYU could have many more supporters if they would get off the "we are better than everyone else" kick that is such a turn-off

I would like to reiterate what I said before. THERE IS NO HOLIER-THAN-THOU attitude at BYU. I have honestly NEVER known anyone at BYU that felt that way.

However, the same thing happens when you are from the State of Utah and you go other places. I lived in the east for a long time and I have done a lot of traveling. So many members of the Church have a chip on their shoulder about Utah just as fans of other universities have a chip on their shoulder about BYU. It's really sad and really hurtful.

You know, the Lord has said "If you are not one, you are not mine." We need to be united and supporting one another rather than attacking and criticizing one another based on where we are from or which school we attend...ESPECIALLY IN VIEW OF THE CURRENT WORLD SITUATION.

My loyalties are to BYU, but I don't hate anyone or any other school. Let's try to get over this pettyness, childishness and unfair hatred of others. Let's be the Christians we are supposed to be and unite and support each other. OKAY!

Look Cougar and Utah fan, we Aggies know that your FB programs are much better than USU's right now, but to pile on us while we're down is so lame. I get so tired of "USU are not our rivals" line. What's wrong with having more than one rival? I think having a rivalry w/USU and either Utah or BYU makes for better football in the state for everyone. Just don't kick while we're down, Utah fans, you have more class than that. I will NEVER cheer for BYU, even at the cost of the Aggies losing the BCS money, just can't do it. I can't stand BYU and yes, coug fan, you do have a "holier than thou" attitude, don't deny it, just except it. And that is why everyone can't stand you. I will always cheer for the fellow state schools over BYU any day.

To To Cats: I'm sorry, but I just totally disagree with you. Have you ever attended BYU? I think if you did, you would know that there is no such attitude there.

The fact, is that people in the world just hate Mormons. It deeply saddens me, but it is true. BYU coming to town reminds them of this. That's all. People hate others who are trying to live certain standards. That's just it plain and simple. And, especially an LDS bishop should be supporting other members of the Church instead of criticizing them...espcially with such sweeping statements.

Aren't we taught to judge others as individuals? How can we ever be united as a Church if our own people are taking pot shots at us. This disunity in the Church is extremely disturbing. I don't know how we can ever be ready for the Saviour to come if we do not love each other.

I have no bad feelings toward any other members of the Church or any other people regardless of where they are from or where they went to school. We need to follow the example of the Saviour and love one another.

Cats I tend to agree with your view. I went to BYU and so do my 4 children. Never ran into that attitude either. Sometimes I think that it is just people with chips on their shoulders who take offense to everything a BYU fan says. Just went to an away game for BYU. We had a great time at the tailgate and the game. More BYU fans than students in the student section. BYU had lots of families with lots of kids, many drove miles to get to the game. I never heard or saw anybody acting or talking like they were Holier than anyone else. Just alot of nice polite but excited fans.

I see more and more how sports bring out the very worst in people and it is sad. At the end of the day - it is just a game. At the end of my life, if asked what meant the most to me, I know it won't be football. Come on people, it is just wrong to judge and it is ignornant to generalize that all people at a school are bad. If someone is bothered by an "attitude", most likely they are just seeing a reflection of themselves in that person. When you are critical of others it is a good time to look inward to see why you have an issue. Most of the time it is your problem not theirs.

OK, BYU beat the ewts. Please. We can use the 500K payout from the BCS payout if Boise State gets a BCS bowl. That money means a lot in our athletic department. One more tool to help to get our football program back to a respectable level. With the right head coach and some more money that can happen quickly.

Hey, Paul, I agree that football is definitely a bigger deal in the south. In college, in hs, even in pop warner leagues. That is just a fact. Look at how many FBS scholarship players per capita come out of FL and TX and CA(yeah I know CA is not what people mean when they say "south"). I have seen football down south at all those levels of play. Yes we have FBS scholarship players in Utah but not the same way or the same intensity as down "south". GO AGGIES! And show me the money.

It is not just USU and Utah that hate BYU. Ask Boise, UNLV, AFA and others. It is becuase they and their fans think that the only way you can beat them is by luck or a bad referee. Could it be possible that other people "live right on and off the field" so good things can also happen to them. BYU is hated wherever they go .... just do a poll in the MWC. Open your eyes Coogies.

It's amazing to read all of the accusations of holier than thou towards BYU or anyone in the state of Utah for that matter. I never witnessed it at the Y. It just shows insecurity. The true holier than thou attitude comes from any and all Pac10 schools that are in denial at how far and how fast that once great conference has fallen, and that the "lowly" MWC is now outplaying them.

I recently graduated from Utah State and I LOVED it there but I'm a huge cougar fan. I love Logan and Utah State but I grew up a cougar fan and i would still cheer for the cougars when they played Utah State. In fact lot's of my friends up there loved the cougars. Logan isn't full of BYU haters just like anywhere you either hate em or you love em. Go Cougars!!!! and Aggies anytime your not playing BYU.

With regard to the sports relationships between Utah, BYU and USU, this is what my perception, as an Aggie fan, has been. When talking with Utah fans, I get the feeling that they regard USU as their little brother of sorts. They always set aside a weekend each year to play us, even though, when it comes to football, it might not "do anything for them"; they still keep that tradition alive. Contrast that with my discussions with BYU fans where all I hear is "Who are the Aggies?" and "What rivalry?" and "Oh, THAT High School team?" etc. (don't believe me, read the comments posted above)

Rather than feeling like the little brother, I feel like BYU fans regard USU more as the ugly step-child.

Therefore, as for me, I will cheer for big brother anyday over the brother-from-another-mother.

I have the upmost respect for the BYU alumni that cheer for BYU, hold BYU season tickets, and donate to the BYU program. They went to that school and should support it. I have no respect whatsoever for people who have never even been to a college and yet, for some reason, consider themselves die-hard BYU fans. And for so many Aggies on this post to openly admit that they are BYU fans is a fate worse than death. Why on earth would you support some other school over your own? USU should ban all BYU apparel from campus and should strip all Aggies of their diplomas if they possess any BYU paraphernalia. If these so called Aggies have season tickets to BYU games, they should be stripped of their diplomas and publicly flogged.

If you want to know why we hate the one true team, see the comments from Steve Smith above. See BYU and the U keeping us out of the WAC for 30 years. See Dave Rose recruiting our basketball players at the MTC. See Dave Rose being unwilling to play us in Logan. I grew up a BYU fan. My family had BYU football season tickets for 17 years through the 80's and 90's. Then I went to USU and 17 years of cougardom were turned around unbelievably quickly by the arrogance and self-righteousness of the boogers, once I could see it from the outside.

Utah State football should be played at the Div. II level. They haven't beaten a quality Div. I program in YEARS! Of course they hate BYU, they get their butts handed to them every time they play! The program is a joke. You just fired the best coach you could possibly hire. Good luck with John L. Smith, part two. USU will ALWAYS be the little brother to all other Div. I programs in this state. Maybe they could line up Logan High for a bowl game? They might actually win......well, maybe.

why do aggies dislike byu? I've never even heard of this before. Maybe in basketball there could be rivalry that could get going--that would be fun :)
