Coug fan | 12:56 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
I hate to say it, but Utah needs to win, so we can have a guaranteed BCS bowl for the MWC. If Utah plays another crappy team in the BCS, it is time to take down the BCS punks. Utah defense + BYU Offense would equal natoinal championship game, but that would never happen. In my heart, I want BYU, but they will not go to a BCS with a win at Utah.

If Boise State slips into the BCS because the top three teams in the MWC canabalized each other, that will still leave three MWC conference teams ranked in the BCS standings.

The evaluation data for BCS automatic qualifying conferences includes the following for each conference:

(1) the ranking of the highest-ranked team in the final BCS standings each year
(2) the final regular-season rankings of all conference teams in the computer rankings used by the BCS each year
(3) the number of teams in the top 25 of the final BCS standings each year.

with Boise State selection to BCS
MWC 2
WAC 1

with Utah/BYU selection to BCS
MWC 3
WAC 0

Yeah, if Utah wins and goes to another BCS bowl, greaty for them, but I thought the ultimate goal is a national championship, and how many of those does Utah have?....At least BYU has one of those. And I know you Utah fans don't accept that championship, but the rest of the country does, and that is all I care about. GO COUGARS!!!!

Everyone is greatly looking forward to this game. It will be a classic! It is just too bad that both teams can't get into the BCS. If these two teams had the name of the bigger schools, they would both get into the BCS even with one loss.

From crowtonlover

Well, the national chapionship is out of utahs hands. But at least they are trying to get there. It seems like the ulimate goal for BYU the last 3 years, is finishing with a 10-2 record and going to a vegas bowl. How Pathetic!
Re: Joe Awesome | 1:51 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
Hey pal, since you want to do some comparison. Why don't you go look at the record of both schools over the last 3 decades my friend. Then while you are at it look at the last decade and the overall record. Wow, you bYu fans are a trip. I can't wait to get to the game and see all you sheltered zoobs wonder around the Rice Eccles Olympic Stadium. Hilarious!!!!!!!!
my thoughts | 1:52 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
Ohio State is playing at home against Michigan - they are not going to lose. (I hope they do, but much more likely would be Michigan State beating Penn State

If #15 Michigan State beats #8 Penn State and #14 BYU beats #7 Utah, wouldn't BYU surpass Penn State. I think it might look like this.
BYU 12
Michigan State 13
Utah 14
Penn State 15
(Penn State might not drop as much because everyone loves their coach)

That would put Ohio State as the Big 10 rep.

Then BYU would need either,
Boise State to lose. They are playing 2 Wac games and I wouldn't guess them loosing either

Or Oregon State to lose to Oregon. I think they are pretty evenly matched, or if USC looses to the Fighting Irish would they drop below BYU.

IF Oregon State loses, USC gets the automatic bid and the at large bid would either go to a Big 10 School or BYU

BCS is stupid | 2:09 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
So BYU will be playing some unranked team in the bowl this year? Whereas other teams that are currently 9-2 will most likely be playing in BCS games? So stupid. The only way BYU can ever get any respect is if they go completely undefeated for like 5 years straight and even then we would probably end up playing UCLA in Vegas AGAIN.
Who's fault is it | 2:13 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
-that the national championship monopoly was broken?
-that the BCS was created?
-that the BCS monopoly was cracked?
-that all of the non-BCS teams now have a chance to play in the Orange/Sugar/Fiesta/Rose Bowls?
-that the BCS will eventually fold and usher in a national championship tournament?
-that all division 1-A teams will eventually have a chance to play for the national championship?

BYU's!
RE: Re: On your mind | 2:39 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
And please enlighten us with how many national titles does BYU has had in the BCS era or BCS games they've played in? The fact is non-BCS conference will ever get a chance at the title.

Another thing 84-BYU played a 6-4 team to win the title. Can you please enlighten us again on when was the last time a 2 loss team was playing in a national title game?

Your comparing an era that is dead; if all things were equal 84-BYU team would not be in a title game.

finished #4 AP/#5 Coaches

almost identical to

1996 BYU #5 in both (BYU's 2nd highest finish)

and just a little ahead of

1983 BYU #7 in both (BYU's 3rd highest finish)

A national championship in 1984 is just as legitimate as a national championship in 2008.

Ask any Miami fan if they think their 1983 National Championship is less legitimate than their 2001 championship because their 2001 championship was won during the BCS era,

or

ask any Oklahoma fan if they think their 1950, 1955, 1956, 1975, and 1985 National Championships are less legitimate than their 2000 championship because their 2000 championship was won during the BCS era.

or

ask any other team that won a championship during the pre-BCS era if BCS era championships are more legitimate,

and without exception they'll say you're an idiot for even suggesting that there is any difference between the legitimacy of pre-BCS and BCS era championships.

Doak Walker Award: Utah 0 - BYU 1
Davy O'Brian Award: Utah 0 - BYU 6
Sammy Baugh Trophy: Utah 0 - BYU 7

Utah will be easier than UCLA.

Christian | 3:35 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
You people are nuts. If BYU wins, they'll be ranked ahead of Utah, without question. What voter would do otherwise? Utah would drop at least 4 or 5 spots and BYU would rise at least 2 spots and any voter filling out their ballot would see that they're right near each other and place BYU ahead of Utah. It's a no-brainer. The only thing that could keep BYU out of a BCS bowl at that point is an undefeated Boise St.
What's: On your mind | 2:39 p.m. | 3:36 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
Better call the NCAA and ask them to strike that Utah basketball championship from their records.

If all things were equal, Utah's season would have been finished after they lost in the NIT.

Also, call Michigan and Notre Dame and tell them to return all of their championship trophies from the dead era.

Good and bad news for BYU fans, though, by striking the pre-BCS era records, BYU loses a National Championship and a bunch of conference championships, but at least the Cougars are now even with the Utes in the BYU/Utah rivalry, tied at 5 games each.

After Saturday, BYU will have the overall series lead for the first time since the 1890's, according to Utah's records.

both BYU and Utah will get credit for another championship during the 2000's and Overall, after Saturday.
To: BCS Buster | 3:43 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
There is no formula under which Utah or anyother BCS team will play for the championship. For one simple reason, #1 plays #2. No BCS team that is undefeated will ever be ranked higher than a BCS team with one loss at the end of the season. And that determination is mostly made up by SOS. One loss teams from the SEC, Big 12, Pac 10, Big Ten will always be ranked higher than undefeated non-bcs teams.
Only one non-BCS bid | 3:50 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
The BCS cartel will ensure that there is only one non-BCS team invited; you'd have to put a gun to the heads of the bowl selection committees to get them to choose a 2nd non-BCS team as an at-large team, so there are only three plausible non-BCS scenarios:

-Utah beats BYU and secures the non-BCS bid

-BYU beats Utah and Boise State wins out and secures the non-BCS bid

-BYU beats Utah and Boise State loses and BYU secures the non-BCS bid

It doesn't matter what Ball State does, they won't finish ahead of all of the other non-BCS teams regardless of the scenario that plays out.
Prediction | 3:52 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
Here's my prediction:

-Cougar offense will be rolling. They will have more success with the pass than the run. Unga will have more receiving yards than passing. Collie with have a big day.

-Brian Johnson will be up and down

-Cougars will get up big early, only to see a late Ute rally that falls short

- Cougars win in a shooout--

Uh, yes they would. You are discounting the fact that BYU was ranked No. 1 in both polls. Of course, they would have been playing in the national championship game.

(And yes, I know USC was ranked No. 1 in both polls and left out of the championship game a few years back. That is a travesty that likely would not happen again.)

You are also forgetting that back then the Holiday Bowl had only one official tie-in. The Holiday Bowl offered both Nebraska and Washington bids to play against BYU in the Holiday Bowl. Both opted to take more money and play in New Year's Day bowls than play the No. 1-ranked team in the country.

Don't try and compare Utah's undefeated 2004 season and no national championship game bid to BYU's ability to play for the title. BYU was ranked No. 1.

All I can say is, when we win on Saturday, Ute fans, let's act like we expected to. Please don't storm the field like a bunch of fools who have never won a league championship before.

Don't give the Zoobs the opportunity to come on here and mock us for running on the field. I mean, fans have already rushed the field after wins against Oregon State, Weber State and TCU. Let's not give them the satisfaction this time around!

I don't care if King Louie bangs home a 56-yard field goal with 1 second left to win the game. STAY OFF THE FIELD! Win with class!

The last thing we need is BYU fan run amock in Vegas. I'm sure the Vegas Travel and Tourism Bureau is cringing right now.

Not only that, we don't need to see Cougar fan commit a criminal trespass misdemeanor by storming the field for the third-straight year because BYU beat the fifth or sixth-best team in the PAC-10 by a blocked kick.

Act like you've won a game before. Stay classy Cougar fan!

Bronco Mendenhall, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around when they came to a modest little house with a faded Cougars flag in the window.

"This house is yours for eternity," said God. "This is very special, not everyone gets a house up here."

The coach felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion that had a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous UTES flag, and in every window was the UTE logo.

The coach looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was a good coach. I went to bowl games, sent a bunch of my players on to the pros, and I turned around the entire BYU football program."

God said, "So, what's your question?"

"Well," said the coach, "Why does Kyle Whittingham get a better house than me?"

God responded, "Oh that's not Whittingham's house, that's mine."

Its my understanding that theoretically @ non BCS schools can go IF one is ranked in the top 8 (spot guaranteed) and another is in the top 12 and ahead in the BCS standings of a BCS conference w/ alower BCS rank. Right now, Cincinnati (big About #18) & Maryland (possible ACC champ about #25) may be on the outside looking in. How the ACC contract with the Orange Bowl affects this is unknown.

What is absolute is that only 2 schools per conference can go. Right now, it looks like the Sooners may be SOL and The horns and Red Raiders are in but that could change saturday.

Until the SEC & Pac10 are decided, this thing is as clear as mud

for the Mtn West is to not have anyone get to a big BSC bowl game. Because if they do, it'll be Hawaii all over from last year. The powers that be will just confirm that the Mtn West/Wac does not belong because Utah, Boise, BYU or TCU couldn't compete against the big boys THIS year. SO lets not ruin it for future years, when the Mtn or Wac have a legitimate contender.

This year's Utah team is NOT nearly as good as 2004's BCS busters.
