Rivalry week: Utes go BCS busting with a win; BYU most likely Vegas bound

I'm rooting against Oregon State, Ohio State, and Michigan State this weekend. Hopefully two non-BCS schools can make it a BCS bowl, preferably two MWC schools.
This is how you build a conference. This is how you build a football program for long-term growth. You have to be able to show recruits that they can play in a BCS bowl, and that the MWC is just as viable as the SEC, Pac-10, etc.
My blood boils just talking about BSU, seriously, I can't stand hearing about them with their weak scheduling, fake play having, and the most annoying fans in the world.
I don't want to see BSU using another fake play to win a BCS game, so as much I hate saying it, I want Utah to win unless BSU loses.
However, if BSU is out of BCS contention, I hope we beat the snot out of Utah.....I can't stand coach whit.
Trick plays and strange blue turf are not valid reasons to hate Boise State? All they have done is match what Utah has done by busting the BCS and have also gone undefeated this year at 10-0.
I'm first a Utah fan (because I went to school there) but I have no problems with Boise State. I have attended their games and feel the coach, team and school are a class act.
If extended an invitation, I'm certain BSU would join the Mountain West. Geographically, they'd be a nice fit and certainly bring as much (and in my opinion more) to the table than Wyoming.
If the Mountain West decides to expand to 12 schools, my hope is that Boise State be among those extended an invitation.
All Utah could do to make me predict they will win is wear black shirts, hold the game Thursday night, and/or hire some "hometown" referees, ala TCU. Otherwise, this game is a toss-up and it's silly to predict a winner before kickoff.
I'm not dissing Utah here. They're good the last few years, and I'm glad they are. But traditionally, BYU gets more respect. Whether you and your U. campus friends believe it or not does not change that fact.
By the way, if I were a Ute, I wouldn't brag so much about that BCS appearance against #25 Pitt, who got in only because someone from the Big Least had to do it. If they beat BYU this year--which is indeed a tossup--their BCS opponent may or may not be as good as the Cougars.
The Y may well get thumped this week-end. I can live with that. Or... they may just dump the Utes (a decent football team, by the way) on their heads, bursting the over-inflated bubble of some of their delusional fans.
By the way, I can live with that, too.
Go COUGARS!!!
Go back to school.
1) "Best Team" scenario:
If it's a three-way championship, concensus would have to be that TCU is the better of the teams (barring an unlikely BYU blowout of Utah). If Utah wins, BYU is the third place team, trounced by the second place team, so TCU comes out on top again.
2) "Long Term Economics" scenario:
Wouldn't it be short-sighted for the LV bowl to take BYU yet again? That would alienate the rest of the league who is already less than satisfied that LV is the conference's flagship bowl. It would only cause the league to push further for a better bowl arrangement. Would TCU fans really travel so much less than Y fans that it would be worth snubbing a top 15 team?
3) "Short Term Economics" scenario:
If it comes down to this year's dollars and you're just going to ignore the conference rankings, why not just select a bowl-eligible UNLV team and have the local fans totally take over the stadium?
So unless BYU wins AND TCU loses to AFA, I don't see any logic for BYU landing in the LV Bowl.
Then BYU went on to a string of WAC championships and national rankings. When people were laughing at BYU for their NC it was because they only won over weak WAC teams, like whom? Like Utah. If BYU was a laughing stock, Utah was their weak opponent.
Now things have changed a little, there is parity. But you guys are beating the same lousy teams that BYU is beating, year in and year out. You guys were first to bust the BCS, but BYU was first to get a Heisman and an NC. Sorry, but a BCS bowl doesn't count the same as a Heisman or an NC.
Now it is time for BYU and Utah to do an Arizona and leave the MWC and move to the PAC-12. Stop fighting the BCS and join a BCS conference so that you can get an automatic berth by being 4th in the PAC with a 6-5 record.
This year they played OSU at home. Imagine if they had to play USC, ASU or Stanford on the road. There is no way they could be nr 1 in the PAC 10.
You people have your perspective completely wrong.
1) even with a loss to Utah: BYU is still 10-2, probably ranked some where between 18-25 --still looks "pretty" enough
2) LV is close enough to extract large BYU fans --even for BYU fans in SoCal, AZ. And with today's economic/financial conditions, it may be easier to count on BYU fans than any other schools' fans.
But I agree it should take TCU if TCU finishes second in the MWC.
Las Vegas is like a home away from home for the Cougars. BYU already has a very large fan base in Vegas and even for regular season games vs UNLV the stadium is half filled with BYU fans.
TCU is a good team, but it's a smaller school and has a smaller fan base.
With BYU, the Las Vegas Bowl will have a guaranteed sellout. Whether TCU fans will travel to Vegas in great numbers is unknown.
It takes a little luck to go undefeated in any conference during any year, ala TCU/Utah game, but thats why they play the games.
BCS BOWL here we come.
I wonder if the Las Vagas Bowl will be on T.V. for the Cougie's? Hum???
UTES 34
WHY 13
Oregon State has two tough games remaining--at Arizona and then against Oregon in the civil war. Lose either and they are out if BCS contention.
Michigan State is playing Penn State. Ohio State is playing Michigan. The Big Ten becomes trickier as a Michigan State and a Michigan win puts Michigan State into the Rose Bowl, but Penn State would likely get a BCS bid. The only scenario where only one Big Ten team is eligible to go to a BCS game is if Penn State and Michigan win. I think Penn State will likely win and go to the Rose Bowl. Michigan is definitely in down year, but this is their major rival. If two Big Ten teams are eligible to go, the second team would probably go even over a higher ranked non-BCS team. That is the nature of the BCS. Unfortunately. It is interesting this late that there is a chance of two non-BCS teams.
I expect at least a NIT invite for Utah this year.
NCAA tourney invite, big deal.
Utah by five.
The MWC is 6-1 vs the PAC 1 this season and 25-11 vs. other conferences. The PAC 1 is only 13-16 vs. other conferences.
6th place MWC UNLV beat Arizona State in Tempe
7th place MWC New Mexico beat Arizona
TCU crushed Stanford
BYU handed UCLA their worst loss in almost 80 years
and Utah beat 1st place PAC-1 Oregon State.
None of these teams -- UCLA, UA, ASU, UO, OSU, Stanford, and Cal -- would finish above 5th place if they were playing in the MWC this season.
BYU STAY SOUTH...............
RED,IS GREAT, GO UTAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im guessing that it would be Utah ranked 12th, BYU 13th, because Utah's victories over 2 top 25 teams would be more impressive to the computers and voters compared to BYU's only 2 wins over teams with a winning record.
So even with a Utah loss, as long as its not a blowout, they probably still have a better chance to go to the BCS than BYU.
TCU blows out BYU, but somehow BYU is still ahead of them in the BCS standings.
Oregon St. beats USC, USC remains 15 spots ahead of them.
So the history of this season shows us that BYU beating Utah does not automatically mean they will be ranked ahead of them at the end of the season.
are you kidding? did you really say that?
hilarious!
U of U favored by 6 1/2.
How can either team expect not to lose with those kind of odds.
Two six point underdogs winning?
Makes you laugh...
a) they will be the highest ranked team of the three co-champions (BYU, Utah, TCU)
b) they will have the longest current winning streak of the three co-champions (with their loss coming back in October)
c) they will have the only road win over one of the three co-champions (at Utah, whereas TCU and Utah's wins came at home)
Hotdogs and drinks for 6 = $36
Watching BYU create magic to beat Utah for the third straight year = PRICELESS!!!

Even if Utah and Boise State lose on Saturday, Utah would probably only drop right in front of BYU."
Sure, I can see a #14 beating a #7, and #7 staying ahead of #14 in the rankings. But I also believe in Schrute Bucks, unicorns and leprechauns.
BYU must produce 57% more offensive output than Utah gives defensively per game.
Utah must produce 17% more offensive output than
BYU gives defensively per game.
Utah will pass to the outside to take advantage of the BYU secondary lack of speed.
The game plan is simple
Utah by 5.
Rise and shout, the Utes will be out, of the BCS, after facing the mighty Cougars.
BYU 31
Utah 21
The Poinsettia Bowl isn't bad; San Diego has nice weather and Utah should be getting used to Qualcom stadium after their 3rd trip there in the last year.
The (BYU or UTAH) winner would get the BCS Bid anyway because of the conference strength (3 top 20 teams) after a Boysenberry State loss. ONLY ESPN wants Boysenberry State in, but FOX has the rights and don't think they aren't part of the magical formula on the back side of everything unseen.
Nevada is capable of beating BSU, especially in Reno. Too bad the Wolfpack won't think of spray-painting their turf SILVER to mess with the BSU players mentally the way way the blue BSU turf messes with opponents there.
Wierd Predictions:
Nevada 41 Boise 36
Utah stupidly lets Max Hall (BYU) beat them with 4 seconds left in the 4th quarter AGAIN
BYU 31 Utah 27 and...
Arizona takes care of OSU in Tucson. 34-24
Texas Tech upsets Oklahoma in Norman 45-42.
Auburn Upsets Alabama 19-17
UNLV 29 SDSU 16
Cincinnati 28 Pitt 24
