the wannabes are out there perpetrating this scare idiocracy. I hope they get caught and taught a lesson....

When it comes to possibility of many individuals being physically threatened I don't think you can be too careful.

I'm curious to know what those "alarming words" were. If this was a threat, then it doesn't matter if it's a hoax. It's still ILLEGAL.

If it's all just a big misunderstanding, well, you can't blame them for being cautious. The same kind of hoaxes happened after the anthrax letters, with the same caution exercised then.

my guess. some kids didn't study for a test and wanted a day out of school
THIS WAS A FALSE ALARM | 12:57 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Every other news source but the d-news has already reported it. There was no white powder in the envelope.

Why does everyone get flipped out about white powder? There's very little danger unless it's weaponized anthrax, which is nearly impossible to get your hands on.

Can anyone think of a powdered substance that is even remotely available that would actually cause any harm if mailed (so long as you didn't eat it or rub it in your eyes!)? And there wasn't even any powder in this envelope!

Terrorism only works when it makes you afraid. Get over it, and we won't have to read these stupid stories on a regular basis.

Come on. I have voiced my opinion repeatedly in favor of traditional marriage, but there are no FACTS showing that this or any similar attacks were from either a homosexual group or gay-marriage supporter. Let the FBI do its job and until they find anything so far its all loose opinion, theory, and guessing. Best thing everyone can do is let the FBI do its job, and stop throwing around accusations based on any stupid opinion, rumor, or hypothesis. Come on.

What made this envelope so suspicious that our first responders had to drop everything and put it in a baggie? Give me a break.

Sheesh, next time hold it up to the light first.

We have too many "sideline quarterbacks" trying to minimumize a situation that becomes a concern to those involved.Tragic endings happen when people don't react to the possibilities that there may be danger. To be safe than sorry holds true.I was a active participant in a white powder problem after the 9-11.Logic told me that there was probably no need for alarm but I did act as if there was a problem and I'm glad I did.It was the correct thing to do.Its like treating all hand guns as loaded. Some people think that may be silly. I don't.Stop critizing people for acting in a safe manner. You may be glad they did some day.

To "What on Earth" and Jon: It is better to be safe than to be very, very sorry. We live in a dangerous world that is not improving. Keep up with what is happening in the world today if you don't believe this. I grew up in a time where you could go anywhere and not worry about running across evil.

This would not be an issue if, in fact, people were not making real threats and attempting to instill legitimate fear in members of the Mormon church.

This makes me angry. This is beyond illegal.

Note to JON:

Manilla envelopes, especially padded ones, are impervious to light.

The anger vented against Latter-day Saints in the wake of Prop 8 vote is nothing new.

The saints in all ages have been the target of discontents, malcontents, critics, the angry, and the insane. Therefore, the reaction of the Seminarians was praiseworthy and correct by their not discounting the possibiity of it being dangerous.

These good teachers were right and wise to put the safety of their students before taking a risk that a package, deemed to be 'suspicious' might prove to be a harmless hoax or prank.

It is easy to carp and ridicule AFTER the emvelope has been proved safe, but it would have been INSANE to have taken any other course of action in case - and the possibnility does exist - it was either an explosive device, or contained bioterrorist or other hazardous materials.

May God who gives sight to the blind, keep our eyes, hearts, and minds open to besetting or possible dangers without our becoming fear-bound to the point of being frozen with fear ad unable to act in the face of a perceived emergency.

Feed His lambs.

"Better safe than sorry" is the phrase my mother often used. At the least this agency got to practice for when it will be a serious problem.

I lived near Rochester, NY on 911, and through the anthrax scares. I'm now back in Canada, but my cousin works in the Church Office Building. When things got crazy there and elsewhere, after the election, and powder was mailed to Temple Square and Los Angeles, I was scared. The effect of the terrorism reached me in Atlantic Canada. I'm sure the haz-mat team don't feel like they wasted their time. They're relieved to have ruled out a hazard. Peace of mind is just as important, when we're dealing with terrorism.

One can never be too careful when it comes to safety, and it is better to investigate and discover it is a false alarm than to blithely ignore seeming threats and come to harm, if thou hast been

"summoned to the deep.
Thou, thou, and all thy mates
To keep an incommunicable sleep"
