Each school in the MWC gets over 3 times the money ESPN was offering, about $1,300,000 per year. Plus each school got a $500,000 one time signing bonus. The WAC's new contract with ESPN is about $400,000 per school, per year. By the way UNLV & SDSU's game that Saturday will be on CBS C.

Re: It's all about the money?

Are you for real? You really think that it shouldn't be?

You on your egotistical need for recreation has driven the world to this...

Enjoy it this year while the economy is down. Next year when the economy is gone, so will be football!
Re WHAT | 8:42 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008
i sorta agree, but i just wish that MWC would go back to about 2003 2004 when the games were on channel 2,4,5, i don't own any cable or dish network so my channels are 2,4,5,7,9,11,13,14,18,20,24,30,50,58,62, and 68.
i love that its on tv but even though BYU stunk through that era it was fun to watch it on TV.

Pure Idiots | 8:59 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008
20 years ago we got almost all of the football/basketball games for Utah BYU, USU, and Weber on local stations. Isn't this new day tech wonderful? Or is it more of the same big business GREED? Whatever I do not watch any of them anymore and I used to never miss a one. Guess what? Life does exist without a steady diet of college sports, and it amazing what other activities are out here for less money. Who cares?
Just Switch | 9:17 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008
I hated the mtn more than anything when I couldn't get it. Yes, the quality is inferior to ESPN, but the fact is that because of it you can get just about EVERY BYU, Utah, or San Diego State game. You just have to get Direct TV, yes Direct is inferior to DISH, the dual tuner DVR struggles and it doesn't offer UHF remotes, but it's worth it for my Cougar games.

Living outside of Utah I never got more than three BYU games televised a year. Now I get all of them, and any die hard Cougar or Ute fan can as well, you just have to be willing to switch to Direct TV. It's really not that complicated, unless you can't pass the credit check.
Big TIME irrated! | 9:34 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008
The MTN channel has NO captions! I never watch those channel anymore!
Lostute | 9:52 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008
BYU-Utah will be broadcast in HD. They're also in the 4th year of a ten year contract, so if you're a die-hard fan, you just might have to give in.
Not that bad | 10:16 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008
I hated the mtn. until I moved outside of the MWC footprint. I wouldn't say I love it now, but all of you still in Utah....it's not that bad. I get to see every game. Go Utes!!!
Move out of Utah and you'll see. | 4:22 a.m. Nov. 15, 2008
Once you're outside the MWC footprint, you'll see why the switch to the Mtn and DirecTV was a GREAT move.

Remember, ESPN/ABC/Disney = BCS. They don't want to help any of the non-BCS conferences. They only want to use them for the 2-3 big games they can get out of them each year (and for Thursday nights) and that's it! Look at the WAC or the Sunbelt or C-USA.

I have not lived in Utah for 8 years, and until the recent deal, was able to watch 2-3 games a year! Most "nationally televised" ABC games were only regional broadcasts. BYU's only true nationally televised games each year were the ones Thursdays on ESPN and the Utah game.

I agree, watching games on KSL was very nice when I lived in Utah. I loved the pro-BYU commentary and the consistency, but those times are gone, and BYU fans live all over the US and World--i.e. Japan. (Thanks Slingbox).

Things are better now!!
No, really. It's better now! | 4:50 a.m. Nov. 15, 2008
BYU and UofU fans.....you will see in a couple of years that the current TV situation is better now than before. Spend a few bucks if BYU/UofU football is that important to you.

The only difference between now and 5 years ago is that the fair-weather, nothing-else-to-do-today fans who are not willing to pay a few bucks to see a game will do something else on Nov 22nd.
Those who want to watch the game will be able to. (Maybe those of you who are cheap and go to a neighbor's to watch it will see what it was like 5 years ago for those of us outside Utah!).

I agree with:
1. Better Bball coverage than ESPN
2. Better game times/days
3. More money for the schools
4. NO difference in national respect (there was very little back then as well, even when it was deserved).

Hey Blaine F. That was a nice well thought out blog. Good luck at the game later today. Love, Toddy C.

By refusing to broadcast the game on other networks, the Mtn. is conceding that they are the worst network.

Given an alternative to the Mtn. people will always ALWAYS take it. Versus, Cbscs, Alta High School multimedia department, doesn't matter. And the worst part is the Mtn. knows this! They acknowledge it by refusing to broadcast the network elsewhere. Who in their right mind would watch the game on the Mtn. if it was on CBSCS as well?

If all else fails I resort to the radio. (I hear the Mtn. is purchasing those rights to. If people can't listen to the game they'll HAVE to watch the network.) If the radio is broken.... then I might turn on the Mtn.
Go Cougs!!! | 9:44 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
For all of you people that say not to worry we get the game on TV thats not true. I do not get the game on TV. We are locked into a contract with Dish Network and can't switch to Direct TV. This is the biggest game in MWC history and it won't even be covered on National TV. This would be Primetime if it were on ESPN.

just do what I do when my beloved LAKERS play on ESPN or other networks, turn down the volume or mute your TV and turn up the RADIO and listen to Chick Hern put the game in the FRIDGE!

Go Lakers, Go Utes!!!!

I hate the Mtn. -- but -- I was at ESPNZone in Denver after going up toLaramie for the UofU @ Wyo game and they hand the Mtn. It's making progress...

I originally signed up with DishNetwork a couple of years ago because they were adding CSTV to their lineup on an affordable package. Then all of a sudden the conference got this great idea to start their own channel that only was available on cable and later on DirecTV. What a joke!

No. Those times are still here. KSL is still consistently pro BYU as is KUTV, KTVX, etc...

Thank Heavens for Mike Runge on Fox 13. At one point, he was the PA announcer for the U. So, he may be biased. rofl.
Steve - Comcast has MTN | 4:09 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
I'm pretty sure Comcast Cable has MTN. I'll have to check for sure when I get home if we have it at our house (we only have Comcast). According to channel listings for Holladay, Utah the channel (MTN) is included and I live right next to there in Cottonwood Heights.

So Comcast customers, check your listings... maybe we'll get to watch it after all.
Stupid is as stupid does... | 10:10 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Do you have any idea how much ESPN would be willing to pay to put this on national TV?

A number 7 against a number 14? In the same state? And they're arch rivals and have been for well over 50 years? In the last regular season game? With a BCS bowl on the line for a non-BCS school? With the BCS bowl game guaranteeing MILLIONS of dollars? Which is so elite only ONE non-BCS team realistically even has a chance of doing it all year? And as a bonus you get the "Holy War" angle?

And yet, the Mtn decides to sit on it.

They see money to be made (how?) but all I see is plenty of people who are going to hate anything and everything about the Mtn.
spencer | 1:06 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
The Mtn HD broadcast will be a joke. Sure, it's in HD, but the equipment they use is so outdated that it will still look about the same as a non-HD ESPN broadcast.

Any way you look at it, it is a rip off to those of us Ute fans who live out side Utah.
JC | 4:24 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I'm a BYU grad, but not really a big football fan. The one game I've always looked forward to watch is the BYU-Utah game. I choose not to have cable or satellite TV because for the most part it is worthless. Most of it's programming is either trying to sell you something or displaying the types of immoral behavior they teach you to shun at BYU. Plus, digital TV has a lot to offer; besides the local networks you get lots of wholesome educational programming. It makes me angry that BYU would sign up to such a deal with the Mtn. As far as I'm concerned I am boycotting BYU football from now on until it is more easily accessible on local TV channels. I HOPE BYU LOSES BY A LONGSHOT! At least they've lost me as a fan!
