CONGRATS on 1K with the Utah Jazz Jerry.
GO JAZZ! This team can win a championship this year!
My guess is that Sloan would trade the 1,000 wins for 1 NBA title.
As for coaching defense...the Jazz have had good individual defenders (think of Kirilenko on the current roster). This seems consistent throughout the league, other than San Antonio. Individuals put forward great effort on the defensive end, but defense requires effort and I don't see a lot of NBA players willing to put forth that kind of effort. They want scoring numbers and highlight dunks. Not rebounds, blocks, steals, and tough nosed defensive work. I don't think that is Sloan's fault.
The pick & roll yields high % shots and works well for the Jazz (50 win seasons). It is an offensive system that has given post-season play but no championships. I don't blame Sloan for no championships. That would be one Michael Jordan.
Rookies are not high % "shots". They make mistakes. Sloan's offense requires precision so Rookies sit and learn for awhile.
I love Sloan. He earns high admiration.

No other coach could win with guys like this. Lets take our hats off to this man. He is a legend and we are witnessing history.
Now that Sloan and Phil have some talent on the bench, this team could go far. Maybe all the way. Maybe not this year but they could make some serious noise. Don't book May and June for family vacations just yet Jazzland folks. We may still be watching ball.
"Sloan's attitude towards all things praise-worthy is almost irksome."
That's who Sloan is. He doesnt need extrinsic praise to feel "precious". He is a man driven intrinsically, the only thing he cares about pleasing is his vision of how his team should play each night.
Very few people have this quality, so it is hard to understand.
Jerry, I hope someday you can relax and realize how much joy you have brought to so many people, helped them through tough spots in their lives, where maybe, the only good thing that happened that day or week, was a solid Jazz win.
The people of Jazz Fandom owe you a huge Thank You, and I hope someday that will mean something to you.
Little did I know.
True, someone else might have one a championship or two but wouldn't have had the long-term success that Sloan has had.
And I'll take the longevity any day.
Also it appears to me so far this year that Jerry Sloan is coaching the best he ever has. And that is saying alot when you look at his results over his long tenured career.
It also seems that he has mellowed...slightly. Maybe D-will has something to do with that.
