too bad Alta isn't playing like they were in the beginning of the season. would have been an epic matchup with Bingham. Now the miners are going to roll, oh well, i'll take a BLOW OUT

Thank our D for the great game. Good job team pulling that one out.
RidgeFan | 11:08 p.m. Nov. 7, 2008
Keep overlooking Syracuse and your team might be sitting in the stands with our boys for the championship game. We didn't believe it either but those Titans are for real. The way Bingham is playing I also expect them to roll as well but not sure if it will be over Alta or Syracuse.

Way to go Davis. You rocked Olsen all night long. he has never seeen pressure likje you laid on him tonight. If anyone wonders who has the best defense in the state they don't have to wonder now. I can't wait to see the Darts next year.

"If anyone wonders who has the best defense in the state they don't have to wonder now."-Would that be the defense of the team that WON? ALTA!
shoddy? | 12:19 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
isn't shoddy another word for _______? never mind.

Davis you were close. great year. your soph QB will be much better next year, along with your jr RB. think your good enough to take region?

Alta, please play bingham to a tie in the state championship.
Overrated | 12:53 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
have some respect. Alta has always had a rough second round game Last year the hawks almost lost to an average timpanogos team They turned around and handed you loss number two and ended your season.

The miners are a fantastic team. Although it's debatable, they might be playing the best football in state right now.

But...

Look at the past four Alta-Bingham matchups. They have been low scoring, defensive battles. This one (assuming both teams advance) will be no different. Especially not with a state championship on the line. Alta's D is good enough to keep them in any game. The offense had SIX turnovers against Davis and still only allowed twenty points.

The mark of great programs is to overcome adversity.

I'm hoping for the matchup between Alta and Bingham for the title game. It should be another one for the ages.
Titan | 1:04 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
First of all, they obviously dont have the BEST defense in the state, they lost! That title has to go to Syracuse without a doubt. Second of all even if alta doesnt overlook syracuse, they are still going to be in the stands regardless.
funny | 1:40 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
now all of a sudden, the tide has changed and Alta & Bingham have great Defenses. When all year, all the talk has been about Offense.
DHS DARTS | 2:24 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
I've heard of losing with class, but has Alta ever heard of winning with class? Come on, give credit where credit is due. Davis CAUSED all those turnovers, and I don't care what you say, Olsen hasn't seen that type of pressure all year. Cowser alone had 4 sacks. Before I had no respect for the Alta fans (especially ALTAFAN), but now I have no respect for the Alta team. I personally saw multiple punches thrown. Alta walked away with this game in the end, but Davis (in the so called weakest region) almost upset the "best" team in the state. The only thing that impressed me about Alta was their receivers being able to get past the secondary in the second half. I'm way proud of the Davis boys, Carling, Cowser, Kariya, Burton, Welk, Fowler and Hinds all had amazing seasons. The Darts come to play, awesome job guys! Alta better be ready for Syracuse, they are out for you. Even if Alta gets by Syracuse, I think Bingham will own you.
Be Careful what you wish for... | 6:41 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
The 5A championships are shaping up to match up some great schools. Alta survived playing a poor first half, but played a flawless second half. All Davis had to do was sustain a drive, which might have prevented Alta from having enough time to score. At the very least, had they been able to put up a field goal, Alta likely would not have been able to overcome 3 scores.

Could've, should've, would've....
Doug | 7:13 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Alta was out of sync, but great Davis lines caused a lot of the problems. There are good young men on both sides. It was an entertaining game. In the end Alta was the better team on Friday, but the Davis players demonstrated the talent and passion to win. Winning despite the number of turnovers shows the strength of the Alta team. Four good teams will play next week and two the week following. High School Football is great! Those, from any team, who have the courage to get on the field and play are the winners. None of the smack really matters.
Region 1 | 8:17 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
If Alta had a hard time with Davis's D They better bring there A game when they play Syracuse . I dont think there is a better D in Region 1 then Syracuse . I think Syracuse wins this one in a close game and Blickfieldt get 2 T.D's . Go Syracuse !!!!
Alta Pride | 8:43 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
You are not number one or you would have won. We played horrible for 2 1/2 quarters on Offense, and then we started playing our game midway through the third quarter. Everyone from Alta should thank our Defense today. We had some huge consistent playmakers for us on Defense. Week in and week out our Defense comes to play. Offense players always receive the glory because they are the ones putting the points up on the board. That is just how it works with the media. Our fantastic head coach calls our offense and that is whom media people interview after the game. If you play on defense, you have a very minimal chance of being talked about in the media other than these blogs. Our offense will click once again; please do not expect those turnovers to come back anytime soon. Our defense will silently keep dominating teams as they have done all year. Alta we play as team and that is all that matters to us ALTA FANS. True champions win against all odds. When adversities hit them in the face, they figure out a way to win.
Alta Pride part 2 | 8:43 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Alta wins because of who we are, what we dream and how we have been raised. We never go into a game thinking we might loose. Yes, that is always a possibility, but we have the edge knowing we will compete to our best ability each and every game. We dont quit!!! Winners never quit and quitters never win. Congratulations to all the teams that made the playoffs this year and congratulations to the four remaining teams left in each division. Well done teams.
From an Alta fan | 8:52 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Davis fans made a big fuss over how good their defense was all last week. After watching the game Friday you have every reason to brag. The defense did their homework. They looked like they studied how Alta plays and the virtually stopped the running game of the Hawks. For most of the game they also stopped the passing game and read where Olsen was going to throw the ball. Alta's defense was tough too, but gave up several critical long balls. Those who knock your defense on this page are wrong. They were the real deal.
MouthoftheMountains | 8:53 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Davis, in my book, hands down the best D. Aragon does a great job but I think he missed a major point of this game. for the first 3 quarters Ammon Olsen was getting hit every time he threw and a good portion rocked him, not just touched him. The Darts were able to pressure with just their front four, few to non blitzes!

Then they lost one of their rotating D-lineman and got tired - no more pressure. Couple that with Altas great D and the Dart offense not being able to move the ball at all in the 2nd half and it just gave Alta too many chances. If the Darts O moves the ball at all in the second half, that Dline is still in Olsen grill. They were for real. Alta versus Cuse is intriguing but I dont think they will be able to put the kind of pressure Olsen saw Last night. That is what forced all four picks, plus they 4 or 5 sacks. Cuse is better on O. Hamblin must make a few big plays for Cuse to keep pace.
Listen Bingham, to take | 8:56 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
nothing away from the teams Alta has played, they have their sights on the Miners and may have got ahead of themselves just a bit. But let there be no doubt, they will not look past Bingham, when the time comes! They will be more than ready to play and defend!
Re:Overrated?? | 9:04 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
It's football! Your teams rating during the season doesn't mean a thing when it comes playoff time!!! Thats why college football is so week, because they don't have to play more than one game to win it all!

Alta deserved to lose that game, and that's an Alta fan saying that. To make that many mistakes on both offense and defense in the first half is unacceptable. Not to mention unrecoverable!

That's why your overrated statement is hollow! The worst performance of the year in a half and they still come back and win!!!

I think it's more of a wake up call!! Thanks Davis for a great game and a smack in the face!! The Jordan game should have already done that but aparently the kids thought it was just a rivalry game and nothing more.

Work harder and get things rolling or your going to lose to Syracuse!!!!
HSFAN | 9:04 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Some have professed that this years Alta Team is better than last years.......NO WAY!

There was a reason Olsen was second string before he broke his foot and his performance yesterday showed it.....Alta made a very young unpolished Davis look like an all-star team!

And as for Alta's defense the 3 linebackers from last year were better than the four they have now anyday!

Enough with all the comparisons......Alta had better fine tune and come to play aggressive football and execute your game plan with zero mistakes ....or your season is over.....

The go news is Bingham isn't as good as last year either......if Alta just plays like it can....its all over for Bingham....and Alta will be wearing rings AGAIN!
BT | 9:18 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
"Funny", when you consider yesterday's games it makes sense. Alta's defense held Davis to 20 points and Davis averaged . . .ok, never mind. They averaged 17.7 in all games. Davis had a great defense to hold Alta to only 21 but it simply wasn't enough. Bingham's win over Jordan surprised me as I expected a close game. Jordan averaged 33 points per game going into yesterday and Bingham held them to only 20. Going into yesterday, Bingham averaged 36 PPG and scored 48 against the team that came oh-so-close to beating Alta. No one, until yesterday, has challenged the Hawks like that this year.
Maybe you're right, though. Maybe we should still talk about Alta and Bingham being great on offense. Winning by one point or 28, their offenses did enough to give them both at least one more game. As did Skyline's and Syracuse's.
To DHS DARTS | 9:43 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
You hit the nail right on the head. Alta was throwing cheap shots all night and I'm told by the players that they talked more smack than any team the darts have played all year. Olsen felt the pressure which caused the pics and hard hits caused the fumbles. We had Alta on the run. It's great to have a team that wins with class and loses with class. Alta can't even win with class. We are proud of you Davis, keep your heads up and be proud to be a part of a classy team with great players and coaches.

re: dhs darts 2:24 | 10:37 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
You are right about Alta not winning with class! They only know how to win with arrogance!! They better watch out because Bingham is going to roll over them. By the way Bingham knows how to win with class and respect for the opposing team. This I have witnessed and I have attended both Alta and Bingham games. I am just an avid football fan who lives in the south end of the valley and attends multiple games. I have no favorite team but it sickens me to see such arrogance and disrespect from one team.
Go Hawks | 10:45 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Olsen may have felt extra pressure from the Darts, but he showed his ability to adapt and rise to meet the challenge in the second half. Don't count out the talent and drive of the Alta players! You can't say their team is "over-rated" when Alta remains undefeated. Watch out Syracuse!
re: DHS Darts | 11:17 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
I am a parent of Alta Students, none of whom participate in Football. I think it is fair to say that any team on any level after committing 7 turnovers, and winning, would say that they " almost beat themselves". Saying that does not demean the other team. Sure Davis appears to have played great and caused turnovers, but this was not entirely the result of their actions. The QB from Alta apparently had a sub par game and threw those 4 interceptions. The fact is that Alta won despite those turnovers. I don't think stating that makes Alta bad sports At the end of the day, Alta won, Davis lost. It could have easily been the other way but it wasn't. I am glad that you respect the long list of players on Davis' team. You should. The same can be said of the Alta team and its coach. As you don't know any of these boys, stop telling us how you have no respect for the players. I am sure that there are good kids and jerks on both teams. It is called competition, and some win and some lose. In this case, Alta won. Congrats Alta
Alta Fan | 11:48 a.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Let me start with that I am an Alta Fan. I am happy with the win. Observations.
1. out line was dominated by Davis all game long
2. Coaches you did a good job with adjustments
3. Thanks to the offensive coordinator from Davis. You must have more then 5 plays.
4. Davis does have the best defense. Turnoves were caused by Davis at lest give them some credit.
5. Worst officiated game i have watched. (remember i am a Alta fan). Pass interference on Davis, Yea right. I believe we should have had 3 called on us. The Back judge (never ref again, please)you witnessed 4 different players from Alta throw punches and did nothing. Who are you related to on our team had. Holding on the fake punt (can offensive line tackle defensive lineman?) This happened right in front of the refree and linesman.

Refs plase do not cheat for one team or another. Let the kids decide who will move on. Whoever assigned hese officials to ref should be fired right now.

What were the penalities like 18 - 3 against Davis. High school football has integrity please have some as well.
JHS FAN | 1:20 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
I hate Alta. But ALTA FAN sounds like a reasonable person. Good for you. We'll see if Olsen plays basketball as well as he does football this up coming B-ball season. Jordan's team has looked good all summer with a ton of returning players. We'll see you soon Alta.
region1fan | 1:42 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Davis played their best game against Alta. Simple fact. I watched most of their games this year and they were very inconsistent at best. The lost at home to Weber in their homecoming game no less. Clearfield pushed Davis all over the field at Davis. They play to the level of their competition.

MouthoftheMountains said it right on his comment that Davis lost it when they did not have anyone to rotate on the line. This something they did all year long and it cost them several games. Davis had some studs on the sidelines who just watched the starters get tired game after game.

I think Bingham will beat Alta unless this game served as a wake up call.
TO: Alta Fan 11:48 a.m. | 1:56 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
I totally agree about the officiating of this game. The state and everyone else was expecting a blow-out game so they sent their worst officials in the state. When the four of them realized they had a game on their hands with the #1 team in the state losing they didn't know how to react except to not allow the Hawks to lose. This was the one thing the refs did do a good job of was not letting Alta, the #1 team, get beat and be put out by a great Davis team. The refs took control on the first play of the second half when they called offsides on Davis for the kickoff. Right then was when you could tell the calls would go Alta's way, including the Pass Interferences that shouldn't have been called on Davis and should have been called on Alta. It was a joke of officiating and the five or whatever penalties in Davis' first second half series that put them at 3rd and 30 completely got the Darts offense out of their rythym.
Enough about the refs! | 2:10 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Seriously there were good and ball call both ways! If you asked an Alta player or coach they would probably say the back judge is the worst in the state as well when he called a holding on the huge middle screen Alta had. Or how about the inconsistant marking of the ball. One side judge would have the spot a full yard in from of the other side judge and then the middle ref would just spot it a foot behind the incorrect side judge!

Seriously its a four quarter game, and a few bad calls won't win or lose the game! There are atleast 30-40 plays that each team had and it was all about who was making plays when they needed to!
Good game | 2:29 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Davis played a great game and lost, No excuses, they just lost. Having said that I have to say that the Davis defense lived up to it's lofty billing more so than the Alta offense lived up to it's billing. Frankly, I really thought Alta would be better than they showed last night. Interceptions and fumbles don't just "happen" They are a product of either good defense or poor offense. I won't go so far as to say Alta is over-rated, but they aren't the team they were last year, not even close.

You can talk all about the Alta defense if you want, but the fact is that Davis has not been a good offensive football team all year, they have NO quarterback and have had to rely so much on the running game that they are so predictable it's not even funny. In the end in was Davis's poor play offensively that was the difference in the game, not Alta's great offense. So, don't blame the refs, it wasn't their fault, nor was it the great play of Alta. It was the poor play of the Davis offense, AGAIN!
AHS | 4:53 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Davis lost, Alta won.. get over it. Nothing is going to make anything different. If you weren't on the field you wouldn't know the things that were being said. Davis kids were saying some pretty low things as well, most of them came before any of the Alta players said anything. And yes, Alta does win with integrity, pride, and class. All Alta kids went up to shake the Darts hands after the game, and half of the Darts players stayed off to the side.. very classy! And when it comes to the smack talk, i was front and center to everything, and it was back and forth, so don't just make it sound one sided, and make Alta out to be the bad guy. We will stand up for ourselves, we will never back down to anyone.
Once again, Davis LOST. Alta WON. See you next season Darts

I'm annoyed of every single fan that is just putting Alta past Syracuse and Bingham past Skyline. If Alta plays like this again they will lose and deserve to lose to Syracuse. If Bingham gets bigheaded and thinks they have the state game made, they need to be punched in the mouth just like the first two games of the season....although i would love to see a rematch between Bingham and Alta. I don't think the Hawks have seen much from Syracuse so they should make sure to not look past them.
Bingham and Alta | 6:22 p.m. Nov. 9, 2008
They will both be upset this week by better teams.
Davis County | 6:27 p.m. Nov. 9, 2008
The Darts offensive just couldn't get it going. Many of them were very tired in the 2nd half because there is not a consistent substitution strategy in place that rests them during the game on offense and defense. You can't win games in the 4th quarter when your o-line is gassed.
