You people are up early. The idea that Mitt would make a good President or VP because he was a CEO is a wild and dangerous idea. They're the ones who caused this mess. The idea that ANYONE understands what's going on in our economy has been torpedoed by the parade of experts claiming to know and all disagreeing. Romney has exactly zero experience dealing with what is upon us. Here's what I know: An every man for himself economy can't last. It can't be saved over the long term, even if it seems to recover for a few more years. Romney may play it cool and act like it's all so simple, but the only ones wishing he was chosen are Mormons who can't citizen their way out of a paper bag and use the same identity politics to choose Romney as our enemies used to vote against him.

God forbid that Mitt or Sarah, or both are on the Republican ticket next time around. The country needs leaders not ideologues.
Chuck | 7:51 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
The best candidate for President in any year from now on would be a reluctant one. George Washington was the man we needed when this all began, and he didn't want the job. We need someone with a head on his/her shoulders who isn't in it for the politics and who isn't seeking position. And because the system is so politically entrenched, I doubt we'll ever see that happen.

I've said it more than once and I'll say it again. The Republican Party blew it big time this year thanks to the mindless evangelicals. The ticket should have been Romney-Petraeus. This ticket would have won in a cake walk.
Romney 2012 | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
The Republican Party rewatds loyal runners up with the nomination next time around.
Mitt is in line to be the nominee (it is true the Hucksteer hung around hoping to get enough delegates to be the #2 guy for just that reason, to be seen as the runner-up heir, but he didn't get the delegates and only annoyed by overstaying his welcome)

Look for Mitt in 2012.
evangelicals | 8:24 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
It is true that one can not overstate the loathing evangelicals have for Mormons (I am lifelong LDS and lifelong resident of BibleBelt) however if Romney gets the nomination they will hold their noses and vote for him in November.
The trick will be to get the nomination without a ton of evangelical support but Romney is a class candidate and it is entirely do-able.
Cats | 8:28 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Whether or not evangelicals like Mormons is actually irrelevant. Mormon's align with Republicans because the Republican values are much more in line with the values of most Mormons. The Democrats have made it just about impossible for most Mormons to be Democrats. This has been going on for a long time and nothing has changed. In fact, it's probably even worse now.

Assuming Obama is elected, the Republicans will regroup, get their act together and be in a great position to come storming back in 2010 and 2012. The chance for Mitt to get the nomination and be elected in 2012 is excellent and the ONE light I see at the end of this tunnel.

As someone who has spent a lot of time in Washington, I can tell you that the pendulum always swings back and forth. Right now it is swinging in favor of the Democrats. However, at this point they are so far left, they are going to have a tough time governing a center/right country without making everyone pretty unhappy in a very short time.

I hope Mitt can come back and save us in 2012 after Obama has made a total mess of it.
Write in Romney | 8:29 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
This election is a wash. No matter who is elected, it's going to be bad for America. I see Obama as the greater of two evils, but I can't quite bring myself to vote for McCain. So I'm going to vote my conscience and write in Romney.

If you're tired of picking between two completely ridiculous choices, I encourage you to join me in writing in a candidate that you would feel good about. It's not a wasted vote. If enough people do it, it could start a trend that will be noticed.
New Yorker | 8:35 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
To provojoe:
Only Mormons want Romney? If you live in Happy valley you need to get out. I travel all over the country and I hear people of all walks say they wish that Romney was on the ticket. Last Friday I was on my way to JFK and the driver (a 30 year immigrant from Macedonia) brought up the fact that Romney would be the only one qualified to sort out this mess. I'm sure both yobama and mccain with their vast economic experience are highly qualified for this task. Get real. Neither of them has even balanced a checkbook let alone, made a payroll. Unfortunately the country is going down a path (both parties) that will take years to correct.
People-People | 8:44 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Where's your memories gone or better-have you just lost your eyesight and hearing? Who just who would vote for party that has run this country into the ground in 8 years, and want more of the soam medicine? I just don't get your Utah republican mentality. And to think you are trying to sell people on how bad Obama-Biden would be after this mess of the last 8 years-UNBELIEVABLE.

To provojoe - Yes, many executives caused the problems that have now beset our economy, but to put Romney in class with them is ridiculous.

They weren't the only ones who got us into this mess. The greed of Wall Street was matched by the greed of "Main Street." In 1999, Clinton and his cronies strong-armed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to allow subprime lending. They lowered the regulations that were in place so that more people could own houses. That in itself isn't bad, but when a person can report welfare and foodstamps as income that props up the system with no real backup. Yes, Bush didn't reregulate the Banks and Lenders, but when millions of people mortgaged themselves into houses they couldn't afford it was only a matter of time. I don't feel sorry for the companies that went out of business nor those that have lost their houses due to greed. Some families have simply hit hard times, which is regrettable, but to make working, prudent, patient Americans pay for the mistakes of their nonworking, impatient, greedy peers is ludicrous.
Milo P. Otis | 9:05 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Yes, I'm L.D.S. and would vote for Romney next time around. I'm also a registered Democrat and have already voted via mail: Obama, but not straight ticket. Judges: Toss 'em. Let them get back into the private sector and work for a living. I'm not into career politicians. Serve, then "go back to the farm" and serve in another capacity, but serve. I believe in term limits, but it will never happen other than that of the office of President of the United States.

McCain has made his choice: Palin and she will bring him down, if HE hasn't already on his own. We are not winning in Iraq. Any time we've lost one of our own, we're not winning. The serge "It's working." That's nice. We shouldnt be there. L.B. J. lied to us; so has Bush. We shouldnt be there, period.

McCain has served his country, so have many others. I've lost a very good friend to alcoholism due to the Viet Nam war. This was a very useless, we were lied to war. L.B.J.'s biggest downfall. Will we ever learn form history? No.
Velvet | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
John McCain has as good a chance as Mitt Romney in 2008. So I'm going to write in Mitt Romney, the better candidate of the three!
re; Mormon from a dumb state | 9:31 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Do you know what educated idiot means? I'd like to see Obama's college transcripts. I'd like to see his academic merits. But I won't because he obviously has something to hide or he would release his prestigious credentials. He is hiding a lot of things that we will never know because he ISN'T transparent and he ISN'T forthcoming. But I am excited for the country to get him as their president. I am excited because "smart people" from "smart states" only learn from the consequences of their "smart decisions" and that is the only thing I am sure about in this whole political process. "Smart people" from "smart states" are proving that they are really just full of their own education ego and so let them have Obama. Let them have his policies, his judges, and his character and then you will see what it is like when the "dog chases the car and then catches it!" Most Obama supporters are making an emotional decision or an anti-Bush decision but neither of these make Obama a better leader or more qualified and they don't make his ideas valid. Obama isn't standing on his own merits, he is riding emotion!

AKRM | 10:28 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
The Penecostals that attend the Assembly of God churches will never vote for a Mormon. I have done the polling by knocking on a lot of doors in Wasilla and Juneau (Palin's congregations). They really do despise Mormons. Members of these congregations would even sabotage our discussions.

Even though Mitt will try to pander for their votes, he will not get their support. I offered to shovel snow, cut wood, pull weeds, but nothing would get them to like or listen to me.

He would have more of a chance by switching parties and running under a similar platform that got him elected in Massachusetts.

Would Mormons vote for him then?
Ummmm | 10:59 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Wasn't Huckabee technically the second-place finisher in the GOP this year?

Wow, that article outlined every reason why I can't stand Romney.

Not that it matters; he continues to only be relevant in Utah.
David O | 11:28 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
If you reddest of the red states keep wanting to vote for Republicans, fine. That is your free agency. Just remember that army of Southern Baptist youth that went knocking on doors. They are voting age now and are or will be parents soon teaching the same hatred of Mormons and perpetuating lies. Why do you think Romney had to give his religion speech? SO keep voting for the Republicans that hate you. Just don't deny it.

Mitt - get a job | 11:46 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Mitt is going to look even more sad in 4 years if all he can say he did since the last election is do some political fund raising.

I would recommend he get off the campaign trail and find a job - maybe head up a cabinet or a UN position. Or how about heading up the Red Cross or a similarly respected organization?
Lonnie | 11:48 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
You people who think that term limits is the answer to our problems are kidding yourselves. Our founders provided term limits for us. Its called an informed electorate and voting. We could vote out 435 members of the house every two years if needed. We could change 1/3 of the senate every two years if necessary. The problem is being informed and electing good, honest, men or women of integrity. It doesn't matter how often we vote if we keep putting the same kind of people in there. How can we get this nation back on track if we continue to elect people like: Harry Reid, Nancy Polosi, Ted Stevens, Mark Foley (gone), Barney Frank etc. If Obama is elected inspite of his socialist agenda and past associations with the likes of Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko, Rashid Khalidi, Louis Farrakhan, it will be the biggest hoax/fraud ever perpetrated on the American people in our history.
I Like Mitt | 11:49 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
I don't agree with the idea that Mitt couldn't win the south. Especially if he runs against Obama in 2012.

I've lived outside of Utah for the past 19 years and the hype about the "Mormon-hating Christians" is wildly exaggerated on this board. A SMALL handful of misguided evangelicals use the nursery-school logic that "Mormons aren't Christians" because we believe Satan, like all of us, is a child of God who fell from grace or that we don't accept the Nicean Creed, which not even the evangelicals (or Catholics for that matter) can explain - much less defend with scripture.

There is no doubt in my mind that if he won the nomination, Mitt would carry the South and could win the election.

Romney vs Obama in 2012 is very reminiscent of Reagan vs Carter in 1980.

I'm thinking landslide for Mitt.
Bhansen | 11:54 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
I'm voting Mitt Romney for President and Hillary Clinton for Vice President. I live in PA and can't vote for either McCain or Obama with a clear conscience.

The hate-spewing tv/radio Evangelists, along with Jessie Jackson, Allen Sharpton, Rev. wright and groups i.e. LULAC, have their own agenda (CONTROL)over their 'flocks'( think sheep).

Without this control, they would be out of a high paying job and luxurious lifestyle.

Because of several Interfaith Council efforts,we are beginning to see a wave of cohesiveness amongst the various religious/ethnic groups, wherin they do support Mitt Romney, because of his excellent moral/family values, in addition to his superior leadership qualities and excellent knowledge of economics and business experience, along with his ability to communicate with international representatives.

Fortunately, many people of other faiths and groups are starting to think for themselves now, and would support Mitt Romney.

Real Political thought | 12:18 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
I am LDS and I will guarantee that Mitt will have a problem getting elected because he is LDS. Don't waste our time speculating about it. Liberals & Evangelicals share one value, hatered of Mormoms. The Republican Party put their most electable ticket together with McCain and Palin, and it may still not enough. The media has blamed Bush so much that it was immpossible to overcome. McCain and Palin are the most electable, and I will tell you why. McCain can actually get the center vote and the Republican base is not offended enough to vote for Obama. McCain also gets the older generation because of his war experience and his age. Palin is a women, religious and is not bad looking. So she brings in women lib types, men who think she is hot, and almost everyone who believes in conservative values and christian values. On the economy, American's have not heard a plan from either side that gives them any confidence. Obama will most likely win because American's are hoping that it was just all Bush's fault and everything we get better when he is out. Most American's are as dumb as they think we are.

All you Mormons complaining about the Christian Right have me laughing. Look at the results from two Bible belt states. In Georgia Huck got 34% McCain 32 % and Mitt got 30 percent. 41,37, and 17 percent respectivly in Alabama. Now look at Utah. Mitt got 90 percent. Guess that means a close to 3 or 4 way split is hate from the Christian Right but voting 90 percent for Mitt because he is Mormon is ok. It proves what I have known for the 22 years I have lived here. Utah is definitly another planet where logic does not apply.

Here we go again, down that same trail we went with Jimmy Carter. Carter, like Obama was a no nothing populist. This country went through some tough times in the late seventies and it seems that we have forgotten that history. If we believe the BS put out by the media and certain other professional brainwashers we conservatives will give up and give in to the radical slobs who stand with the socialist Dumb-o-crats. Everyone who cares anything about America and Christian values should support McCain/Palin and don't become discouraged. They can win but only if we vote for them. The people who would support Obama, if they stay away from the poles will be helping this become a better country. Think about it!"

David O | 2:13 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Spare me, this Republican administration has DONE MORE to turn us into a socialized country than Obama has even had a chance to do. Look at our banks, brought to you by so called conservatives. A conservative president resided over the largest growth of people depending on medicaid due to losing health insurance.

Bob, that is a huge pool of people that weren't willing to vote for Romney. How many of those are the ones that called Mormons a cult? Many.
another blessing for Democrats | 2:24 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
As for "Palin 2012," that development would just be the latest in a long list of blessings for the Democratic Party since early 2005, when Bush's Social Security privatization scheme collapsed, starting a downward spiral that led the Republican Party, among other dead-end paths, toward Juneau, Alaska. So, to that prospect, I say: Run, Sarah, Run!

SLMG | 3:07 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
If the good people of Utah think that in 2012 Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin will be the candidates for president they are in for a big shock. Hopefully the Republican party can find someone to run that could actually win. Why would Mitt Romney put himself through the same pain again, he will still be a Mormon and the attitude of the country will not of changed in that regard, he still would not have a chance to win the nomination. As for Sarah Palin, heaven forbid that this woman that acts like a teenage cheer leader with raging hormones should even be considered a candidate is beyond belief. There are so many more dignified and better qualified Republican women that would make excellent candidates for the office of president, choose one of them.

Where does this "the Republican party hates Mormons" or "the Democarts hate Mormons" depending what side of the fence you are on come from? Niether party hates Mormons, they only want your votes they do not care what your religion is. Wake up Utah, vote for the person not the party and you wonder why you are called sheep by the rest of the country.

I believe government is too big, that both the Republicans and the Democrats are spending too much money, and that we must maintain a strong national defense while protecting our individual Constitutional rights, such as the right to own and bear arms, the right to free speech, the right to practice our religion, etc. I'm not a Democrat because that party won't protect a baby's right to life, constantly talks about further restricting gun rights, criticizes Christians and others who maintain traditional family values, defends candidates who are weak-kneed when it comes to using force when necessary to protect human rights and our national defense, and can't understand that raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy means less money in the economy to go around. For the most part Romney reflects my values. He is intelligent, economically well-educated, well-spoken and possesses executive experience. I think he would be an outstanding President or Vice-President. McCain should have selected him instead of Palin, but I also think she would be a good Vice-President or President because she is not afraid to wield her power to favor the citizens over Big Government. I truly hope that McCain/Palin comes out ahead.
Jerry W | 3:24 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
I think the problem with present candidates and those who have run for the past few decades is that they have no experience in running a business. Being involved in business you have to face the cold hard realities of what makes the economy run and your business successful. The current candidates have all had monthly checks coming in with little understanding as to how the process of developing wealth happens. Mitt Romney is the only one who has had to bite the bullet and has been very successful at doing this. Hopefully America will wake up to this in the near future or I am not sure what kind of a future we will have.

Pardon Me But | 5:07 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
I too believe Mitt is a good man, but remember he was born with a golden spoon in his mouth. It's alot easier to succeed when you have enormous wealth behind you, and a family to guide you. Just look at the big shakers in the world today and their roots. It's a very small percentage of these people that done it by themselves. I'm not sure that Mitt really knows what the majority of us live like or cares is my concern with him, but he definetly knows about being priveleged. Big business doesn't drive this country-the people that work for these businesses do. Don't EVER forget that NO business is any better than it's employees.
