Oi!

I'm a BYU student, and I work and pay for my own tuition, thank you very much, so don't patronize me or Halley! And I'm voting for Obama! Because I actually think about it, quite a lot, more than I think about my own studies probably, and I seriously think he's a far better choice than McCain!

I am offended by the references Palin has made to me and my kind. If I choose to where lipstick does that make me a hockey mom? I doubt it.

And by the way, may owner, Joe Sicspac, is tired of his name being thrown around also.

Sincerely,
Duke the Bulldog

To 9:00 and Wesley

Just because YOU don't support Obama doesn't make us college students immature! Did it ever occur to you that we actually do think about this quite a lot?

FYI, I do NOT rely on my parents' support to make my way in college! Do you think I put so much strain on my time to do part-time work as a custodian AND take twelve credit hours at the same time only to use my parents' money to pay for my education?

Do you want my advice, if you're going to say that college students aren't mature enough to vote?

LOOK IN A MIRROR!

I'm a woman. I do not repsect a mother who puts herself first. That's pretty obvious with palin and her kiddie for photo ops family. As far as putting her in a pretty dress and sitting her in the corner... that's EXACTLY what McCain is doing! Duh? Unless it's some pablumpalin friendly airwave, she won't give any interviews. We say something about her ethic's issues, and were picking on the little girl. We talk about her association and links to the AIMovement, and were told to sit down, shut up and vote their way. Not this time. McCain had a treasurebox filled with men and women who can work rings around this woman. But because the evangalical leadership wanted her, and threatned to bolt if her, or someone like her was not picked, McCain took a gamble - and will lose that bet in about 2 weeks.
Craig | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
For all of you who are saying that you'll support Obama, go ahead, if that is what your conscience is promting you to do. Be aware. Be very aware that you have to be careful for what you wish for. McCain and Palin certainly have there misgivings, but Obama is nothing more than a snake oil salesman who is peddling his elixer of 'hope and change' without anything substantial to back himself up.

For those of you who want to see your hard earned money be redistributed to those who have no right to it, go ahead and vote Obama. If you want to see what little sovereignty this country has left thrown to the other nations of the earth, again, vote Obama.

It is high time that we had a viable third party to represent Americans. Neither of the two ruling parties have any connection to the general populace anymore.

Yesterday Palin was on the Rush Limbaugh Show.
(surprise, surprise)

After the usual attacks on liberals, the drive-by media and the usual neocon war-cry: "Obama is going to raise taxes - and McCain won't!" Palin ended up with this:
GOVERNOR PALIN: "Hey, thank you so much and we'll keep listening. Thank you, Rush."

Absolutely astounding the power the bloated bigot has on people - especially the rednecked variety.

Palin listens to Limbaugh. Tells it all doesn't it?

LOL!
CB | 10:47 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Too bad you're not better informed. Signing yourself as a BYU student hardly qualifies you to make this kind of declaration, just shows that you are a 'sound-bit' groupie who has failed to really research your subject. Some of the greatest leaders in world leadership have been women. Try Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi and I'm sure they all had their nay-sayers and 'how dare she'. Sarah Palin is a human being with her faults and failings, but she is also a very astute common sense person and frankly I would prefer her to any of the 'senators' we are stuck with.
michaelh | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
McFalin: I think that Palin in qualified for VP. FYI my IQ is to the right of 130 (of the bell curve, that means higher, for you liberals) and I listen to Limbaugh as do many other highly intelligent people. He has the most upscale highly educated audience of any radio show.
You should be ashamed of your bigotry.

ediddy,
What kind of father is Obama? He appears to be a good one. It is a hard question to judge, but he takes time for his girls and they seem well adjusted. He took the time to do an interview for Parents magazine with Michelle. Cindy McCain did it alone. More importantly Obama has had plans to provide tax relieve for low and middle income families all along. McCain is flirting with such policies now that he is down, but still wants to give the lions share to the wealthy who are not struggling in today's economy.

Re: Ekim 10:26 - The guy that graduated at the top of his class? The Harvard grad? That brainless guy?

You got it. I'm voting for That One.
Thinkin' Man | 11:46 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I think there is a huge element of unabashed bigotry in the opposition to Sarah Palin, statements about women's rights notwithstanding.

Too many people look at Palin and see the Saturday Night Live caricature. They only see the superficial, missing the guiding philosophy that is really important in a political office.

So Obama is an excellent public speaker--so what? An eloquent Marxist is still a Marxist.

So Obama looks good and polished on camera--so what? That doesn't make up for his stunning lack of qualifications.

What's important is the substance of the message, not the appeal of the messenger. Wake up!

It is a well-established fact of life that too many people in Utah have been conditioned to do what they're told with no questions asked. Probably something to do with: "...subject to Kings, Rulers, Presidents, Magistrates ..." thing (easily abused).

My hat is off to those who have also been told you can't possibly be a good Mormon if you vote Democratic.

Reading this young lady's letter, I would say there may be help for Utah after all.
Question... | 11:54 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Why is it that no matter what the topic if I disagree, even without calling anyone names, I am labeled as "intollerant" or "bigot" or "hypocrite"? Fine, I'm an intollerant, hypocritical bigot. The more you call people names, the less of an impact it has.
Anonymous | 11:56 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Michael, your IQ might be right of 130, but it seems that if you are listening to Rush Limbaugh, you most likely are poorly informed and unread. Go back to the hills, and leave those of us who are widely read and well educated alone.
MK OK | 12:02 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
There is a lot of trash talking coming from both sides. The fact is that Obama is not a terrorist and Palin is not the devil incarnate. Palin was not the best pick, but the treatment that she is receiving by the media is deporable. They are trying to destroy her. Again, she was not the best pick and she has some issues, but the media has gone out of their way to gloss over Obama's faults and talk endlessly about Palin's faults. I have researched and thought about this election a lot and it becomes increasingly clear that Obama is socialist (by the way, just to be clear, I do not listen to talk radio at all). Socialism is bad because it takes away the benefits of hard work and removes the consequences for laziness. Tax more those who work and give to those who do not. We should help those less fortunate than us, that is necessary. But it should be an individual responsibility. Of course, it is always easier to take money of other people's pockets than it is to take it out of our own. That is what socialism brings, less personal charity and less productivity.
John Marx | 12:06 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I'm so frustrated with people who are voting 'against' the other candidate. I hope Sarah Palin being "brainless and mean" isn't the only reason you're voting for Obama!

Why would anyone vote for one of these two liars? (Google factcheck-first result for examples on both candidates) Unless you believe that all the misrepresentations are accidental, but how would that be better?

Both candidates have promised tax cuts in times of enormous deficits. The finical plan seems to be to put it on the next generations tab, and most people are so selfish that they don't seem to care as long as it's not their problem.

As long as most people believe that a vote for a third party candidate is throwing away your vote it will be. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Anonymous | 12:10 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
michaelh: I dont believe you about your IQ. I think you are full of beans. I have read plenty of your writings. You have proven yourself to be no great thinker. You are excellent at re-barfing Rushs talking points. "He has the most upscale highly educated audience of any radio show." I sure he claims that but that doesnt make it true.
Hypocrisy | 12:15 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
@ 10:45am

You say that Obama is nothing more than a "snake oil salesman who is peddling his elixer of 'hope and change' without anything substantial to back himself up."

What exactly does this make McCain? He was the one that chose Palin, and it wasn't because of her great qualifications! He sold himself, the Republicans, and us the American people, to try to get elected.

If the Republicans want our vote, then please, get somebody more qualified than Palin. Get somebody that can actually help fix our country. But don't take us for the idiots that you all hoped that we'd be. We don't just vote for looks, religion, and doggon because we're gosh darn joe sixpacks. In fact, I find that rather offensive. We're not these brainless idiots that drink beer and watch hockey. We're actually intelligent people that care about our world.

In terms of redistribution of money, you should only fear this if you are in the very rich uppper class. To which, you haven't been paying your fair share the past 8 years. Time is up, pay now!

>He has the most upscale highly educated audience of any radio show.

That has actually been disproven. I will see if I can find the citation but while certainly some educated people listen to his show, demographically, they skew blue collar and undereducated.

Nobody's changing | 12:50 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I really didn't think this thread was going to have anything constructive or informative in it. I could tell after reading the first few postings I was right.

Nobody's changing their positions based on these slimy attacks. So somebody calls Palin mean, ugly, stupid, crook, whatever, do you see people gasping and saying, "Oh No, I better vote for Obama"!

I saw one poster who sayd he doesn't care if William Ayers were Obamas best friend or his VP candidate, he would still vote for Obama! Now that guy's been drinking some STRONG Coolaid!

Minds are already made up by now, and just calling Palin "Mean" or pointing out that Obama was raised and endoctinated by socialists and anti-Americans, isn't going to change ANY minds.

It doesn't matter WHO is elected! America won't change until WE CHANGE! Obama can't FORCE us to change. McCain can't change Washington just because he's contra-washinton.

They may be able to change our government (a little) but until each of us is willing to change, it won't make a bit of difference.

I don't see many on EITHER SIDE willing to change much. They all think, "EVERYBODY BUT ME needs to change".
Ken | 12:56 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I found it very ironic that the focus of this particular letter to the editor is that Governor Palin is mean, which then has resulted in most of the comments posted here appear to me to be mean-spirited with personal attacks going both directions.

The few times I have perused on-line comments for the Deseret News I have frequently found this same thing - someone states an opinion and then rather than another person stating an opposite opinion in a civil manner the comments are often degrading to those whose opinion differs from their own. It would sure be nice to see more civil comments!

The Bible states, "By their fruits ye shall know them." Senator Obama's voting record including strong support for partial-birth abortion, his past associations, as well as my perception of his lack of patriotism are the reasons I will not be voting for him.
Mike W | 12:58 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I love a recent poll of WOMEN that shows more than twice as many women think Biden is more fit to be president than Palin. Sorry John McCain, women weren't as stupid and willing to blindly jump on the bandwagon as you thought they were! Palin was a terrible pick and an embarassment to hard working mothers everywhere.
Anonymous | 12:58 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Sarah Palin represents today's modern American conservative movement. What is today's conservative?
Depends on who you talk to. In my opinion, today's conservative is simply this: Somebody that has demonized the left with their version of a dirty word-liberal. And they use that dirty word again and again and again.
So in a sense, today's modern American conservative movement is divisive offering nothing other than "we are better than you!"
Absurd.

Congrats to Halley for having an independent opinion.

It is as John Cleese said, "I'm sorry Michael. You are no longer the funniest Palin."

Craig's warning to a BYU poster to "be aware, be very aware that you have to be careful..." has a vaguely familiar election time ring. Maybe it is the regular Pub mantra: :"Be afraid, be very afraid...". Craig deep down sees what is happening to the GOP. If this kind of post is happening in Utah and from BYU, get ready for "the change you deserve" like it or not. The game has changed. Start praying for Mitt to save you in 2008.
Anonymous | 1:46 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I agree with Please Halley. And to add to that, Obama thinks there are 57 states and Palin's the idiot? You're all drunk with the Obama koolaid. I don't like any of the candidates. None of them are fit to be President. When your choice is beavis or butthead whats America to do?
Change has come | 2:15 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Senator Dole may loose. Bush has been a blessing to democrats. Bush has changed the political landscape of America. Virgina and Colorado are voting for Obama. McCain only has a six point lead in Georgia.

Palin was just one more straw.

Rush supported Bush. Bush has ruined it for the Republican Party. Rush like Bush seem never to be held personally accountable. :-)

"Christopher Buckley knew he was venturing into treacherous territory when he endorsed Barack Obama:

The penalty turned out to be more severe. William F. Buckley Jr.'s son said yesterday that he had lost his back-page column in National Review, the conservative bible founded by his father.

"Within hours, poor NR was being swamped with furious mail, 'Cancel my subscription, this is betrayal, Judas, Benedict Arnold,' " Buckley, 56, said in an interview. "I thought the decent thing to do would be to offer to resign the column. Well, they accepted it."

Anybody that has the courage to go against the grain and dare to outspokenly vote Blue in such an iron-clad Red state, tells me there is hope for Utahns.

Palin's geography lesson | 2:33 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Good news, everyone: Sarah Palin may now be able to see New Hampshire from her house.

The state is, of course, on the other side of the country from Alaska, but that's not what Palin seemed to think in a rally today. The Republican vice-presidential nominee even seemed to draw a few boos when she told the assembled crowd, "It seems like, and in our last rally too, and in other parts around this great Northwest, here in New Hampshire, ya just get it."

Hmmm. Palin thinks New Hampshire is in the Northwest. Perhaps she IS brainless after all.

Socialization | 3:06 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I cannot believe that Obama will win because it is the popular thing to vote for him...he will lead us into more dangerous war then the democrates have already been complaining about, and talk about some one socializing with off the wall people. The media does not like to show the real Obama, because they want him to win. He will have our medical all screwed up, has anyone lived in a country where a medical plan like he wants is already in place??// the great doctors will be forced out of the field! wake up people...this is not a popularity contest!!
Thank You | 3:18 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Good Job, Halley. You do BYU proud. Clearly it is possible to be of the faithful and rational at the same time.

President Hinckley was right years ago when he urged members to become better informed to no longer be "isolationistic" and "parochial."

Sister T you said a mouthful, good job.
Grimble | 3:20 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I'll take your Obama said there are 57 states and raise you a Palin just said that New Hampshire in in the northwest U.S.

Seriously, people.

I'd love to have a discussion with an intelligent conservative who can explain his or her reasons for voting for McCain, and who can listen to my reasons for voting for Obama, without someone hollering about Obama being a muslin terrrist.

Alas, so many intelligent conservatives are jumping ship. David Brooks. Christopher Buckley. Christopher Hitchens. Another new one every day it seems. So the only people that are left are the ones that think Palin is qualified and Obama's a terrrrist.

I beg to differ! ANYTHING that hurts my country hurts me. We need to get past this US v. THEM mentality. As citizens, we are in this together. People of BOTH parties want the best for our country, we just see the issues differently.

And this was supposed to an argument FOR Palin?

Dude, the people not supporting Palin are, in fact seeing a SNL caricature. On the news. With a mic, stirring up rabid fans everywhere.

The "substance" of this messenger is ... what? What does SP stand for?

Will she ever have another regular media interview? Ever?

if she would speak to the media: Anderson Cooper, Brian Williams, anyone aside from the media of the right, we'd have more to go on.

And we'd learn more of what she was about.

unfortunately, her first and only foray into the public eye was a disaster and that's all we know about her.

A stump speech is NOT the same as an interview.

Was this what civil rights movement was all about, putting an African American into office regardless of his hatred for the country and his lack of ability?

One of the problems facing our country this election is the blatant incendiary rhetoric, since rhetoric can incite violent behavior. Freedom of speech does not give people the right to yell, Fire! in a crowded theatre. The McCain/Palin ticket and their pundits are purposely giving miss information about their rival; they are inciting the crowds at campaign events to yell, Kill Him!.. What is more hateful?

michaelh, it is your right to question Sen. Obamas qualification for office; however, making judgments that Sen. Obama hates our country is out of line.

"As a student and former independent, I've decided to cast my vote for Barack Obama."

Then you're making a huge mistake.

If Obama gets in the White House the Democraps will hold all of government. And with a filibuster proof majority in the Congress you will not see the end to socialistic programs and a huge tax increase to pay for them.

By the way, Obama promised to sit down with Ahmadinejad and talk without preconditions, in his first year in office. That will never happen. He forgot to ask Ahmadinejad if it was OK... Which it isn't. Ahmadinejad has his own preconditions before he will talk... namely, US pull out of the middle east and quit supporting Israel. Well, on second thought, pulling support from Israel is a distinct possibility if Jesse Jackson has anything to say about it.

Palin's husband is not running for anything. But Osama is running to be our next president. (I shudder at the thought)

And Ayers is not a "former" domestic terrorist. He is an unrepentant terrorist who said he's glad he terrorized and that he didn't do enough. He should be in jail and Obama should be there too, caring for him.
