Don't even give me this garbage that extra points can't be blocked from their normal distance- Nebraska blocked TTU extra point in OT from the normal distance. To say that BYU would never have blocked it except for the penalty is ridiculous. Also, Jan Jorgensen was being held when he reached out to block it and there were 3-4 other Cougars in the air behind him. That's a weak argument from you ute fans and it's all speculation.

As for UNM, it was a fairly weak call, but when the game ends up 21-3 you can't say that that call affected the outcome (the final score maybe, but not the outcome). And if you want to point out bad calls, there was a horrible call right before the end of the first half that cost BYU a good chance at a score or the game wouldn't have been that close. Austin Collie called for offensive PI when the defender stumbled on his own was a horrible call).

The utes got more than their share of breaks when they got past OSU with a questionable, at best, call on the 2-point conversion.

Be as jealous as you want utes, we'll-find-out-in-1 1/2-months.

Let's break it down so even a BYU fan can understand it...

For laughs, Eliminate the MWC & Utah St from the schedules of the U & Y. Michigan > UCLA, Ore St > Washington, Weber = N Iowa. Advantage: U

Adding the Aggie Game; Utah beat USU by more than the Y did.

Lets consider the MWC now (to date): Utah 3-0 & BYU 2-0

So bender, you're thinking that Mich is better that UCLA still after losing 13-10 to Toledo (the same team that was giving up >35 points a game before Michigan)?

And if you want to continue with comparisons, how about Wyoming- who scored their first touchdown of conference play Saturday (against your beloved utes), and who outgained the utes also. Even with your starters in the game through 3+ quarters and you only got to 40 points because of a muffed punt.

I think that the evidence is clear. BYU is better than utah (and not just in football, women's soccer=5-0 shutout).

Go COUGARS!

Huge cougar fan here but let's be honest - the teams on BYU's schedule so far have not been very good. No shame in that as intelligent fans know teams have no control over that with schedules made years in advance. But given that weak schedule, BYU has NOT played like a top-ten team should the last two games. It seems as if the Coug's have kind of turned their intensity on and off throughout the game and it showed on the scoreboard against the Aggies and Lobos. No one (well some idiots might) can criticize the quality of TCU particularly in Dallas. So it is time for the Cougs to step up and play like a top-ten team (all 4 quarters) against what is easily the toughest team they will have faced this season. Go Cougs!

Zoobies, better start your list of excuses as to why you lost on thursday...
You got one already (we had a short week.... um so did TCU people)

Re: Excuses | 2:21 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Yewties, better look for other ways to discount BYU's schedule after they beat down some horned frogs in Fort Worth on Thursday! What will Ute fans do if they don't have "BYU hasn't played anyone" to use to puff up their little brother self-esteem?
Name Callers | 2:42 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
What makes you think that every negative post on here is from a UTE fan? When I read some the posts, the negativity is coming from BYU fair weather fans. From my point of view, your own fans do more whinning than any UTE fan. UTE and Cougar fans need reality checks. Neither one of you is going to any bowl game ran by the BCS.
Cats | 2:42 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
As a committed Cougar and a season ticket holder, I CAN'T BELIEVE THE IMMATURITY GOING AROUND THIS BLOG. This is a game--that's all. It's entertainment.

Do you people have any identity of your own? Is your entire self esteem based on whether or not your team wins a game. I'm talking about guys who most of you have probably never met. They just happen to go the same college as you went to. This is really sad.

Having said that, I'm a Cougar and I hope they win. I also think it's a good thing for the Church when the BYU football team get's positive national attention. But, my self-esteem will not suffer one iota if they don't win. I also don't hate any other team just because they happen to attend another university.

Honestly, people--GROW UP!
BYU will lose!! | 3:02 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
BYU will lose in Fort Worth, Guaranteed!!! Go horny toads/frogs/whatever!
BYU IN TEXAS | 3:12 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
SINCE MOST OF YOU ON THIS BLOG ARE NOT IN TEXAS, YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT ALMOST HALF OF THE STADIUM WILL BE COUGAR FANS. IT MIGHT AS WELL BE A HOME GAME. THE STADIUM IS NOT THAT BIG AND WITH ALL THE BYU FANS FROM AROUND THE BIG STATE OF TEXAS, IT USUALLY BLOWS THE MINDS OF THE TCU FANS. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT A ROARING FAN BASE CAN REALLY PUMP UP THE PLAYERS. WE SAW THAT IN 06 AND WE WILL BE THERE TO WATCH THE VICTORY BY BYU. TCU IS GOOD BUT BYU HAS THE STRENGTH AND NO DOUBT THE BETTER COACHING STAFF TO PREPARE. LET THE GAME BEGIN!
CougAlum | 3:18 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
BYU better play better than they did last Saturday against New Mexico or they will get beat on Thursday!
RE: Bailed Out | 3:31 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Agree, the refs handed the game to byu. Fact: byu hasn't played a quality opponent yet (don't bother trying to disprove, we all know it's true). Fact: byu is overrated (also, don't bother arguing. Utah WILL BE ranked over byu in the BCS polls). And finally...Fact: byu will lose to TCU. Final score? Somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-0.
Pablos mom | 3:33 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Pablo this is your mother! what did I tell you about pretending to be a ute fan? You are an embarrassment to our family, as if being a BYU fan wasn't hard enough...why doesn't anyone like us?
re: Cats | 3:36 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
That was an immature comment and you need to grow up. Didn't they teach you about quiet dignity in Zoobie school. The frogs are going to trounce the kitties.
Slow starts | 3:38 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Im glad BYU had slow starts in the last two games. It allowed the offense to play into the fourth quarter, some experience they are going to need this week in Fort Worth. I was impressed by the poise they showed going down the field at the end of the game to put New Mexico away. I dont think TCU plays better team defense than NM. Their offense barely put up enough points against Colorado. Who scored first, oh yah, colorado.

To Cats,
You are the one reading the blogs. Good rant. If you dont like it, dont read it. Leave those of us that enjoy trash talking alone. We enjoy it. The games will be played, we will talk trash, complain, etc., and then we will wait for next season and do it again.

"Judge not that ye might be judged."
BYU fat boys | 3:50 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
The cougars may be a pretty decent football team but they sure dont pass the eyeball test. Just about all of them have guts hanging over their belts. When you look at TCU or Utah you see a bunch of well conditioned athletes with speed to spare. I really think BYU is a pretender. Max Hall is a superb QB and has driven this team to overachieve. The real BYU team will be exposed as true overachievers on the road this thursday. But its ok Y fans you would have gone shopping on sunday to see 10-2 for three straight seasons earlier in this decade.
Simply Logical | 3:51 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
BYU beat New Mexico who beat Arizona who beat Toledo who beat Michigan. Toledo beat Michigan by three points and Utah only beat them by two so BYU is hands down better than Utah! And Utah beat Oregon State who beat USC so they're the best team in the country. So BYU is the best team in the country!

But Utah beat UNLV who beat Arizona State who beat Stanford who beat Washington by seven points, and BYU only beat Washington by one point, so Utah is better than BYU!

But Stanford beat Oregon State who beat USC who beat Arizona State who beat Stanford so Stanford is better than Stanford!

...It doesn't matter who beat who on what day. All these comparisons on these blogs are beyond pointless. Different teams match up better or worse in certain games, get up for big games, or have off weeks. There's only one way to know if Team A is better than team B. By playing each other. Everything else is pointless nebulous conception.

Bottom line, BYU and Utah are two great teams. The game will be close, like it has been traditionally. No blog is going to decide who's better.
RE BYU in Texas | 4:04 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
using all caps certainly made a big point. i understand clearly now. just be sure to use all caps on friday when you list all of the excuses as to why the y loss. it will be most impressive. bye bye y.

AMEN!
re: luck vs execution (2) | 4:32 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
The thing is about the Washington call and the NM call is that neither call turned the game from a loss to a win. If the XP is made the UW game goes to OT so it isn't true to say that they were going to lose without that call. I think the call was odd by the way.

However, BYU has been the receipiant of many calls like these going against them in past years. No naysayers ever seem to remember that stuff. So things balance out over time.

As to the NM call, same thing. Bad call but nothing happened that made that a loss for the NM team.
Fully Invested | 4:43 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Hey Bender, how nice of you to bring up 1984 and then accuse BYU fans of living in the past. What past are you talking about? You're the one who has to keep going back to the 1800's. I'm only going back to last year. By the way, if Utah wins on Nov. 22, I will have no problem congradulating thm on being the better team, because unlike some Ute fans, I believe that the better team is the one that wins the game no matter what the score is.

Cats, you don't get on these blogs often do you? I think that most of these bloggers don't get their self-esteem from the team they root for. Keep in mind that for myself and many others this is strictly entertainment. My life does not revolve around who wins or loses. If I had to choose between a win and my profession, I would take my job. Who wouldn't? So, I guess I agree with you, but you need to remember this is all in good fun for most of us.
A thought | 4:49 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
The Ute fans think the Utes are better,
The Frog fans think the Frogs are better,
The Cougar fans think the Cougars are better,
I know, lets just settle the whole thing with a vote!

No, wait, that would make us the BCS. We'd better just play each other.

Using all lower case made a little, yet refreshingly, a totally worthless comment. True, it will be bye bye Y, but only if you Ewets come down to the airport and wave goodbye to the Y as they go to a BCS bowl game early next year. I'll be more than happy to do you Ewets the same favor when you all go to LV, that is, if you are lucky enough to get past the Frogs.
re: Urroner | 5:18 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008

The last sentence of your comment is the most important "Neither one of you is going to any bowl game ran by the BCS."

The key words are "ran by the BCS". The BCS will do anything to keep the MWC or any other worthy teams out of their party. I don't know which team you support, but BYU, Utah, or TCU would have a grand time in the ACC, or Big East, and even the Pac-10 this year.

The BCS posers just won't play schools from the MWC anymore. Who wants to look bad in front of a national audience with all the $$$$ and recruits watching? The time is coming when BCS schools will get beaten on a regular basis, and the quality of talent continues to deteriorate on the BCS teams.
12 Pack | 5:43 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Being from Utah and a Utah fan, I've always rooted for Utah #1 & BYU #2. I now live in Washington and have noticed that the BYU fans are the most obnoxious and annoying on the planet. Always busting on the Utes, and every one else for that matter. With that said; GO HORNED FROGS!
PA Cougar | 6:21 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Consider the rest of the landscape IF the Cougars should pull off the road win Thursday night:

1. If Mizzou upsets Texas, BYU goes down in the polls. Texas wins, no change.

2. If Ole Miss beats Bama, BYU temporarily moves up, most likely.

3. Penn State will not lose to Michigan. No change.

4. If Kansas upsets Oklahoma, BYU moves up. Oklahoma wins (85% likely) no change.

5. Florida, USC, Texas Tech and OK State all romp this week. Very slim chance one of them is upset. If any of their pathetic opponents pull an upset, BYU moves up. Highly unlikely.

6. If Georgia whips #22 Vandy, they may overtake even a victorious BYU if the win in Ft. Worth is underwhelming.

7. Given the Big Ten bias of the poll voters, if Ohio State manages to beat up Sparty in East Lansing, they would probably leapfrog BYU even though they don't deserve to. That's polling reality.

8. LSU will not overtake BYU this week by beating SCarolina, but will roar past next week with a win over Georgia.

If BYU wins Thursday, that is this week's poll scenario. If they lose...

See you next week.

PA Coug | 6:41 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
As for BYU fans being the most obnoxious--you've never been around Gator fans, have you? or Tide fans, or 'Horns fans, or 'Canes fans, or Sooner fans...the list boggles.

You live in Washington--if you were a crimson and gray Coug you'd notice how obnoxious the Husky fans are too.

The reason your comparison is invalid is because you are no longer in Utah and thus have precious few Ute fans to compare these "obnoxious" BYU fans to. It's the same here in PA. Quite a few BYU fans, but only the rarest Ute to be found. Since Utes number so few outside Utah, they tend to be a bit quieter around their friends who are BYU fans. Silence equals lack of obnoxiousness.

Hence, outside his element, the Ute fan seems quite a reasonable fellow. Put him inside the state of Utah and the situation changes dramatically. I did my time there. Dad's a Cougar, mom's a Ute. And I noticed that within the state of Utah, where Ute fans enjoy a comforting majority status, they are far more obnoxious, rude, profane, obscene, angry, hateful, spiteful and otherwise downright mean as compared to BYU fans.

Just the facts.

BRAZ | 6:49 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Fairness, actually UTah should be #1 cuz they have the best record of unbeatens, 7-0.

Anyways, I'm glad to see that the coaches don't dissect film for their players, but let them squander their worthless hours deciding what they should be looking at. DVDs to all the players? A real coach would analyze the film first or atleast along with the players and show them the weaknesses to exploit, strengths to defend against etc.

This coaching staff makes me more and more upset and it's obvious they can't interpret game film very well based on their game plan for New Mexico. Had they used the running backs correctly, it would have been another blow out. Oh well, we will lose our perfect season soon enough. Lets hope we hold on atleast one more week.

To Harvey Unga:
The real football fans know you are the true heart of this team and that without your heroics, we would not be undefeated this season. Please be patient and if the coaches don't realize what they have with you, please transfer to another school. Any school in the nation would give two scholarships to have you as their starting back.
Ridgerunner | 6:57 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
3 points to make about previous comments.

#1: Will BYU ever move up in the polls? If BYU keeps winning and teams ranked above them lose, BYU moves up! Same with Utah. The conference doesn't matter much.

#2:Is BYU good or lucky? BYU has a better offense than any team in the MWC. Offense=A. The defense is a B+. Special teams is a C. Coaching gets an A also.

#3: Who will win this game Thursday? TCU will be conservative in play calling, BYU should not be ultra conservative on either side of the ball--blitz the QB and on offense BYU needs to run the ball just enough to loosen up the pass defense. BYU cannot become one dementional on offense. Turn overs and special teams will play a big role in deciding this game. Low scoring game would favor TCU greatly. BYU needs score early.
This is my report!
Be Quiet whiny coug fans | 7:08 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
What do you mean BYU better play better than with New Mexico? Did you notice we basically won by 3 touchdowns and kept the other team to 3 points?!?

Give me a break! You're probably the same lamos that booed Bronco for not going for it on 4th down!
RE: PabloTheUteFan | 7:51 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Yeah and I am sick of hearing the utes this and the utes that. ESPECIALLY in a BYU article. BYU will roll and take care of business starting thursday. BYU 35-17 over TCU and a woodshed whipping over the utes 52-9.

Go Cougars!

RE: Fairness | 7:53 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Really? Then Tulsa and Boise should have been ranked ahead of BYU at the start of the season.

I'm just trying to figure out how you got that they were not a year apart from Urroner's original post. Do you follow college football? Do you understand that the two terms have evolved to embody Utah's weak defense a huge moments in a game, and BYU's ability to make the big plays against the little Utes to get the "W" over the past two years?

Institute degree? Congrats on never passing the GED there, little bro.

RE: explain to me | 7:59 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Answer:

FYI: Because their flight was delayed while on their way to visit BYU's BCS opponent. And since the utes can't sell out their home games (accept for BYU, go figure that one) it was an easy, CHEAP ticket to that game.

Expectations | 8:01 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
It is interesting how high the expectation are for BYU, especially by it's critics. If they don't win by 40 pts. each game, some think they are overrated and "losing it". No other team in the nation is so severly scrutinized by it's fans and critcs. If an another team they played loses a game, after losing to BYU, it is said of them that they are weak and the win for BYU is meaningless. How would any of you like to try to live up to those kinds of expectations? Never make a mistake, never have a bad day, cause if you do, you are overrated! Who rates your performance best? Polls or yourself? You can count on one hand the number of college football teams that goes undeafted each year and in most years that number is zero. Will BYU or any team accomplish that? The answer is; it isn't likely to happen for any team. So what should we expect from our favorite football team? Be good and honorable men is more important than winning every game. Perspective is a hard thing to have, isn't it?
RE: 12 Pack | 8:08 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Just like most utes who obnoxious and annoying for posting on a BYU article. Reason is utes have nothing better with their life, somehow in between warcraft games or should I say "holy war craft" they post something negative when the article happens to mention something about BYU in it.

Why the Fiesta & Insight Bowls have been to a Utes game? Who has visited a BYU game? The Independence? The Sun?"

Easy. BCS Bowls always go and vist the #14th ranked team in the country at the midpoint of the season. They have also visited USU, Weber State, Albertson's college in Idaho, and even colleges without football teams, because all of these college teams are headed directly to the BCS Bowl.

There is also talk in football circles of having the Ute football team play the winner of the Super Bowl, The World Series, the NBA Finals, all combined with Mike Ditka to decide who is the BEST.

BRAZ, maybe BYU should just hire you to be the coach since you are so much smarter than the coaches they have now. If you were as smart as you thought you were, you would realize that BYU has a fulltime guy who does nothing but film, and the DVD's that the players got were probably instructional and position specific. Considering the expectations and Bronco's record as a head coach, I would say that he is one of the best coaches in the country. Too bad you can't see that because you are such a know-it-all.

Sorry, I am from out of state so I don't always get all the local jokes... and you guys seem to have a lot of them when it comes to BYU and Utah. By the way, go AFA Falcons! We were lousy against the Utes, hope to do better against the Cougars.
Is TCU all that? | 12:00 a.m. Oct. 14, 2008
Who has TCU played that makes them so tough? The only close-to-decent team they've beaten is Stanford. TCU is fast, and they've allowed very few yards on defense, but they were fast last year, too and lost. As far as "#1 defense" in yards allowed, they've played almost nobody, except, of course, Stephen F. Austin--I don't know Stephen, is that one guy or a whole team?

TCU also just had a mediocre showing against Colorado State. If BYU's team shows up that played against UCLA, we should handle them, uh, handedly.

Last point, I hope the coaching staff has been saving up a lil' sumthin' for bigger games. We threw many different looks offensively at UCLA, but not nearly as much in the last two games. I have never seen BYU's defense, never, as good as it was against UCLA--Hard hitting, fast, incredible. You can't say it was just a weak UCLA. If BYU's defense could keep that up, I don't know who could stop us. I hope the coaching staff can keep pulling that kind of effort out of the team. Go Cougs.

Expcept for the MONEY..... So with this fact in place, start PAYING the athletes and call them something other than student-athletes....
