re: BYU #1 | 9:10 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I think you're smoking something! Right now, BYU doesn't look anywhere near a championship team. That doesn't say they can't arrive there, but at the moment, they are not the best team in the nation. I do disagree with people that say they are really overrated. Maybe a couple places in the polls, but the MWC dominated the PAC 10. USC does not belong ahead of BYU or Utah. Alabama squeaked out a win against Auburn, and Auburn isn't that hot. Georgia is definitely overrated, and I think Florida made it apparent LSU is definitely overrated as well. I think Nebraska made it apparent that Texas Tech is overrated. Ohio State doesn't belong ahead of Utah. I can only think of a couple schools that should be ahead of BYU and Utah in the current rankings, and I see a bunch that should be below them. The MWC dominated in the bowl games last year, and they dominated in their non-conference games. I think this conference is probably about the 3rd strongest in the nation this year. The Big East, Big 10, ACC, and PAC 10 do not show any real strength this year. Respect the MWC!
re: Anonymous | | 9:16 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Didn't BYU shut out Wyoming? Yes, and it sounds like Utah could've as well since the receiver was out of bounds when he caught the ball, but Utah didn't contest the call.

Didn't BYU score more than two offensive touchdowns against Wyoming? This is all true, but I'm certain Utah would've done so if the wind didn't kill the passing game, and if the defense didn't score so many touchdowns.

Didn't BYU score their first TD and their first third down conversion against Wyoming before the last two minutes of the second half. See my comments about the weather and the fact that if the defense scores, then the offense doesn't get a chance to run up any yards or points because they don't get the ball.

Get it out while you can Utes. I think not! I hope for you to go undefeated, and work your way as high up in the polls as possible. Then it will be that much sweeter as we beat you like Texas did Oklahoma!

re:"to anonymous @ 8:01"

I'm guessing the longest win streak in the nation.

It's not Utah...

BYU baby, just keep burning an turning the wins, while the Utes bark like a little toy poodle, feeling all big and bad on the other side of the fence.

What's going to happen to the Utes against a good team when the offense has to perform?

BYU is the best team in the State of Utah. Again, I think not! I will give you second best!

Utah will end up tied for third in conference again this year, behind BYU and TCU. WRONG! Utah will end up in first place, and I think BYU will end up in 2nd place.

Toledo's oppenents average score 35, today they hold michigan to ten points in the big house. seems like the great victory for little brother is getting weaker every week. Michigan may not even be bowl worthy this year. letting wyoming score on your great defense, shame on you. Wyoming couldn't score on the cougars second and third stringers for 1.5 quarters. the Yewts are the worst top 15 team ever. better watch out for not only tcu, but also csu and nm. may have multiple losses before nov 22. hope the only thing the mighty yewts are playing for is pride.
re: Anonymous | | 9:24 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Look, I don't dismiss BYU for playing UCLA and Washington. I'm very happy they did their part to make the MWC look good. I'm also very happy they clearly beat UCLA, but was disappointed when they squeaked it against Washington. That said, you can't make either of those wins look good versus Michigan. Michigan beat Wisconsin. Oregon State beat USC. Who has UCLA or Washington won? I think BYU and Utah should be ahead of USC because Utah beat Oregon State. I also think Utah should be ahead of Ohio State because Ohio State struggled to beat WI, and lost badly to USC.
No one undefeated! | 9:25 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
As for me, I don't see BYU or Utah going undefeated. I don't see Utah going through TCU and UNM without stumbling and I don't see BYU going to TCU or Utah and not stumbling. Let's be realistic. The rankings are bogus until after about 10 games. There is a lot of football to be played and both teams are not showing greatness and have no good opponents to show for their 7-0 and 6-0 records. Everyone is way to optimistic. It's pathetic. Let it be. Give it a rest. This is NOT BYU's greatest team ever. It is NOT Utah's best team ever. Both are good at best. The coming weeks will prove that out.

we can always just pretend byu scored 3 quick td's and COASTED to a mwc victory.
re: Stupid Ute Fans | 9:37 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Glass house! Glass house! You're throwing rocks from a glass house. Stope before you cut yourself to ribbons! Your only non-conference opponent with a winning schedule is Northern Iowa! Not much above or below Weber State! Your other non-conference wins, are Washington, UCLA, and Utah State. Washington has yet to win a game, but they almost tied it against BYU. UCLA has a win against Tenn, and a win against Washington State. The rest are losses. Utah State was played by both Utah and BYU so it doesn't make a difference to compare. We beat them worse than you did if you want to compare games like the WY game. That said, Oregon State is 3 and 3, and beat USC. Michigan has a losing record, but they did beat Wisconsin. I'll take the Oregon State victory over UCLA, and I'll take MI at the "Big house" over winless Washington. Thank you very much!

That said, I'm not saying BYU is overranked. I think Utah and BYU are better than USC. I think they are better than Texas Tech, Ohio State, Georgia, Missouri, and Alabama. I'm not impressed with any of the BCS conferences other than the Big 12!
Anonymous | 9:43 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
As I write this, Air Force (who came very very close to beating Utah) is trailing SDSU.

After Toledo (really? Toldeo?) beat Michigan today, and Penn State destroyed Wisconsin (who many Utes playing the 6 degrees of bacon game were using to illustrate how mighty their team is), Utah's schedule isn't looking a whole lot better than BYU's right now, and their record certainly doesn't look any better at all.

And here in SEC country, no one is talking about Utah. BYU gets some mention. Not a lot, as SEC fans are notoriously provincial, but certainly more than the Utes. Actually, the only people around here talking about the Utes are the Ute Alumni.

Both BYU and Utah looked sad today. Both better start fixing problems, or it's going to be a looong conference season.
Utah and BYU | 9:44 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Both deserve to drop in the polls. Just watching the SEC/Big 12 games today it is clear that there are many one-loss teams in those conferences that would blow you guys out. Easily.

The only mwc team ever deserving of the national stage was Urban Meyer's team, and he got out of the mwc first chance he got.

Face it mid-majors - Utah and BYU are 8-4 teams at best in either the Big 12 or SEC and totally undeserving of a BCS bid even if undefeated.
Score doesn't matter | 9:46 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
The score is not that important. BYU beat Wyoming 44-0 and Utah managed a 40-7. Does that mean BYU is better? NO, a win is a win. A win means you are undefeated and when the season ends, thats all that matters. If BYU or Utah is undefeated at the end of the season, a BCS game will be rewarded, regardless of what the score vs. UNM or USU was!
PS, the MTN is ridiculous. Watching ABC and ESPN games all day, then having to watch the MTN made me feel like i was watching BYU classic games on KBYU.
Nevada BYUFan | 9:54 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
This is for "Big Travelor"

Your comments are idiotic, pointing maliciously at another. I hate to burst your bubble. Both BYU and Utah are excellent teams and winning won't stop your whining.
BYU | 9:55 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
BYU is not better than these top 25 teams...
1-OU-Just obvious they can't compete with those caliber athletes.
2-Alabama-Same Reason
3-LSU-Same Reason
4-Mizzou-Same Reason
5-Texas-Same Reason
6-Penn State-Same Reason
7-Texas Tech-Same
9-USC-BYU wouldn't score more than 10 points against Pete Carroll
Georgia, Florida, Ohio State-Superior Athletes.
I could go on and on but people lets not lie to ourselves, BYU is not legit and will get owned by a legitimate BCS team in a BCS game if they make it that far. For the record I am neither a Utah Fan nor BYU so I have no bias which is why I have said nothing about Utah, however Utah has yet to prove anything either.
re: Stupid Ute Fans | 9:59 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
As big of a BYU fan as I am, there is no way the Cougs or utes would be able to beat USC, Ohio State, and Bama in normal circumstances. I really don't think either team is up to that level. Utah beat air force in a nail bitter and BYU beat Washington in the same fashion, and both of those teams arent that grand. Although I do think if BYU could play a near perfect game ie: UCLA, then they could probably beat most any team in the nation, but with utah's bad passing game (Johnson 110 yards passing vs. WYO) I dont think the utes would be able to even hang close with any of the big boys, even with their stellar defense. So unless the big boys will cooperate and scuedule us in the future, I don't think we have much room to talk. Here's for hoping BYU and Utah will be underfeted on Nov. 22 for a bcs birth.
JazzFaninHouston | 10:03 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
BYU is very much like the Jazz they are good, very good. They are also predictable. They depend on execution. The opposition defense pretty much knows what is coming and it is a question of if they can stop it. That works well against lesser teams. It can be a real struggle against a great defensive team.

As far as BYU beating TX or OU or PSU on a regular basis, they are not there yet. However, if you look at the schedule for TX it will be very hard for them to go undefeated.

The 1,3, and 4 teams lost today. There is only one SEC team undefeated (AL) and one Big 10 team (PSU). The Big 12 teams are beating each other up and it is not likely that they will go unbeaten.

If BYU can go undefeated they will be in the top 5 and there will be a lot of discussion about who they should play.

However, they will have to develop some poise, intensity and a few trick plays to beat TCU at TCU.

They can rise to the occasion and may have been looking forward to TCU a little today.
Hawaii | 10:05 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Let's see, Ohio State goes to two BCS championship games and gets blown out each time--gets millions of dollars for their program each time--which is just what Hawaii did--and you're worried about being the next Hawaii? Maybe you you wish you could get a Hawaii into your conference. If the MWC was so lucky to have two undefeated schools play each other at the end of the year, they still wouldn't be ranked 1, 2 when they played each other.
Y Wont Drop | 10:07 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
LSU and Missouri will both drop past BYU. The Cougs will gain at least one spot, maybe 2, depending on what happens with Okla St
No room to speak | 10:16 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I don't think that utah has any room to speak about non conference wins, bragging about a last second win against a mediocre oregon state who got lucky cause usc overlooked them. (happens every year, remember stanford last season, and osu again before that) And the michigan game isn't looking to hot after that loss to the mighty toledo rockets? I wouldn't be suprised if utah slippes up along the way to UNM or TCU. I think byu will beat utah in november because of their superior offense, and utah's lack luster passing game, but it will be close like always.
Okie | 10:18 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Oklahoma State should now move into the top 5--to not do so would just show the pageantry of the whole BCS.
re: Y wont drop | 10:21 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I agree, and with texas tech also squeaking out an overtime win against nebraska, the red raiders could also drop past the cougs. This could be shaping up as the perfect storm for BYU, it will be fun to see what happens with the rest of this season.
BYU is more than legit! | 10:23 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
LSU got worked by Florida who lost at home to ole Miss???? Mizzu lost at home to OSU. BYU struggled but beat a UNM team that gets up for BYU always. Boise St. only beat So. Miss by one touchdown more than BYU beat a better UNM team that beat Arizona two years straight. Look Utah fans! You are good but barely beat AFA and only beat UNLV by 21. Well UNM lost by 18 today. The Vegas line was 23. Pretty close. BYU deserves their ranking in the minds of Coaches and Media who have more knowledge than Ute fans. TCU nearly lost and they are next on Thursday. 17 straight baby.

It never ceases to amaze me the number (and content) of posts by Y-haters on these articles (not sure if they're truly Ute fans, as most straight-thinking Ute fans would seek to praise their future opponents in the hopes a 11/22 victory would be more meaningful). The fact that they express mock amazement that UNM makes a field goal (quoting Jorgensen's UW statement about "knowing" the Y would block the PAT), or eagerly post a comment at halftime to mock the "kitty cats," (or can't get past Collie's "living right" comments) seems like an admission that they feel threatened by (or a major grievance with) the Y or LDS church in some way, and receive some type of emotional validation when the Y stumbles. Please try not to be so predictable in displaying your insecurities...
Yet again | 10:59 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
40-7 against a team you should dominate you will move up in the poles, 21-3 with a lack luster performance agains a team you should dominate (East coast voters will not look at stats only scores). One will move up and one may yet again be jumped or even worse drop.
Winning | 11:00 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I have to agree that I am tired of BYU bashing on these comment boards. I have never read the posts on the articles about the Utes, but I hope our fans are not returning the "favor." It is sad.

Also to those who keep saying these wins are not impressive, IT DOESN'T MATTER. All you can really do is win the games. Seriously, what other point is there? Hey I would love to see them make no mistakes and execute perfectly every series on offense and defense. I get frustrated when they don't, but realistically they have won every game they have played since early last year (is it 15 or 16 in a row !?!) and until that changes nothing negative that you bashers or anyone else says matters at all.

If you have a case of little man syndrome, maybe you could work on your self image and stop worrying about getting down on us.

Keep winning Cougars!
Mark in Peoria | 11:01 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Kinda getting tired of all these BYU fans saying how well traveled they are and how everywhere they're talking about BYU.

..."they can't stop talkin' about them here in LA" or "this may be SEC country but they can't get enough of these cougs" or "Geez, I went to Namibia the other day and..." etc etc.

Gets old.

If BYU makes it through the season undefeated, yes, they will go to a BCS bowl (that's still a big if with games at TCU and Utah). None-the-less, when they meet up with a team like Florida or USC or Oklahoma it will be just like Hawai'i last year.

People talked about them too. How they got spanked.

"Michigan has a losing record, but they did beat Wisconsin."

What did the Mighty Wisconsin do today?
6 Penn State 48
Wisconsin 7

And Michigan? "Struggling Michigan takes first loss to MAC team, off to worst start in 41 years"?
Toledo (2-4) 13
MICH (2-4) 10

So that's what you are throwing down?

Ute logic:6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.

But, hey, did you catch the headline on ESPN?

"BYU extends nation's longest winning streak to 16 straight"

Wow, and last year was a rebuilding year with an untested QB.

This year they are playing even better.

I wonder how they will do next year?

I do know one thing for sure...

If BYU runs the table, and gets a BCS Bowl Bid, and does the same next year with a special team, and even if they win the NC again, it will become the "most controversial National Championship ever", with 1984 slipping to 2nd place with the U of U fans, even after they finish 3rd in the MWC again, again, again..

Y Grad / Y Dad | 11:19 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
So, let's see, first it was USC... "the Y would get slaughtered by USC. No one beats USC." Then it's Oklahoma. For a week.

Seems fairly obvious that top 5 teams can be beaten. By lower ranked teams. Equally obvious that BYU hasn't been beaten. Yet.

Rail all you want. Contort and configure. Justify, whine, wail and gnash, but the Y hasn't lost yet. And while everyone can speculate, only each next game will tell.

BYU is is just as legit at #8 as last week's #1. Or next week's #1. Utah fans, amuse yourselves and annoy your neighbors to your heart's content. If you are lucky, the Y will be undefeated going into 11/22. If you are REALLY lucky, U will be too.

The thing I like about ugly wins is - they are still wins. Beats moral victories. And self-justification. And self-aggrandizement... especially by deluding yourself through degrading the accomplishments of others.

re: winning

Gotta agree with your post about the bottom line: winning. There is nothing MORE you can do. Style points? Come on. I mean, it's not like you could give Michigan your kicker so he doesn't botch a chip shot to lose the game just so your SOS looks good. Or give Washington your playbook so they could beat somebody.

No all you csn do is win.

But to answer you question. BYU fans ALWAYS get on the Ute blogs and share their negative thoughts. Did you really think ya'll were above that? Oh wait....maybe you did.
re:Mark in Peoria | 11:23 p.m. | 11:40 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
"Gotta agree with your post about the bottom line: winning."

How 16 straight, longest in the nation?

How about two years undefeated in MWconference, and undefeated this year.

Does it make you wonder why as much as ESPN bagged on BYU at the first of the year, they keep mentioning the win streak?

What do you think, Mark?

Is it really about winning?

So let's bag the style points, and just point out that BYU is winning.
Info man | 11:49 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I watch a lot of ball and Utah and BYU both have quality programs that can compete and beat the best in the country. There have been many lame comments about how BYU must not be as good as Utah because they didn't blow out this team or that team or that the strength of schedule of one team isn't as hard as the others blah blah blah..... Silly comments on both sides.
The Mountain West is quickly becoming competitive with all other conferences. The gap continues to close due to the number of awesome athletes that are available. Look at the number of big and fast kids coming out of high school in the western U.S. Non B.C.S. conferences have teams with size, speed, skills and are becoming deeper every year. It's called PARITY.
Be happy with your team whether it's Utah, BYU, Boise St., TCU or whoever. As for me, I think BYU will be the BCS buster this year. But anything can happen on any given Saturday.

Bob in line | 12:02 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I hope I stand corrected, and BYU is worthy of a top 10. And it is good to read that the Vegas line was 23, so we were only 5 points off the spread. In many newspapers around the country they list games with Vegas point spreads. I'm guessing many east coast reporters will look at that, and give BYU some love.

And of course UNM is not a slouch. I would simply expect a top 10 team to have a better showing, especially at home.

The good news for this Thursday is that TCU runs a similar offense as UNM. This means that BYU had a tune-up game. We are going to have to stop dropping passes and find better ways of getting Unga and Vakapuna the ball, which will open up the tight ends and the edges of the field.

And while our special teams is not the best in the nation they have not hurt us, played pretty solid.

I wish Utah the best until Nov 22 though get tired of the hatred. And yes, BYU idiots post moronic comments on their stories as well.

Seems about 20 juveniles on both sides are running the trash talk.
TO: Mark in Peoria | 12:05 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I doubt that you are from Peoria. You are probably the same person that wrote the "big traveler" comment. Go back over to the Ute article and comment there.

You obviously don't get the point that was being made. BYU is a unique university and is very well respected. Nothing was said about BYU beating other big teams, etc. just that other fans respect them. That's it, end of story.

Direct Snap | 12:13 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
BYU should develop a direct snap to Unga or one of the other backs. That seems to be working well for some of the SEC teams.

As a variation, Unga fake a run and flip the ball back to Max for a pass.

BYU is too predictable in their play calling. Max tends to force passes in where he should not as he goes to his favorite recievers. You can't do that against good pass defenses.

TCU defends the run well but they can be beat deep on pass defense. A direct snap to Unga and then a flick to Hall could set up deep pass plays. It also could foul up the TCU run defense. It could compensate for not having a running QB.

I'm a huge BYU fan and live in Washington. I'm excited about this team, but I'm worried that Utah State fans are right. I couldn't see BYU as a better team week after week than USC. I don't see BYU as better than Florida. I do believe BYU has earned a place in the top 12, but I haven't seen anything that would convince me the Cougars should be among the elite. I really hope they prove me wrong. That 59-0 win over UCLA was really impressive. But the 28-27 win over Washington looks more and more meaningless the more clear it becomes how awful the Huskies are.
TexMexCoug | 2:25 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Ute fans cannot leave BYU alone. They are driven by their absolute jealously towards BYU. They are so angry BYU grabs all the attention and respect.

Because of this and shamelessly, they do anything they can to trash on BYU -- They do this hoping other people will respect the Utes more

The real shame is that most negative BYU things you hear from Utah fans are just stupid posts that are just trying to get under your skin -- It is usually some attack on the LDS lifestyle -- If it is not that, it is some RETARDED post trying to use a statistic that logically makes no sense

The biggest shame is that most Utah fans are LDS and they are trashing on the school the Mormon Church set up -- How can you trash the school of your own religion?

Utah fans just give credit to BYU -- I give Utah credit as well -- Until then please be quiet and please stop the obvious out-of-stupidity posts
BYU still the same..... | 2:25 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
team they have been for years!!!!

They are good, but they are not yet great.

They don't play well on the road and they choke in bowl games. With all of this talent I thought they were going to be different this year, but I don't think they would stand a chance against a top team. I fear we will all be embarrassed if they are invited to a BCS game. Hope I'm proven wrong on thursday, but something tells me the streak ends this week.

I hope they manage to stay unbeaten until the 22nd, and as a U of U fan I hope BYU loses. Should they beat us though, I truly hope they don't pull the regular bowl choke act.

They are the more talented team this year and next year BYU should be unstoppable. All I can say is if you guys beat us this year, please don't humiliate all of us by choking on the big BCS stage!

P.S. Did you see Florida last night, WOW they are back in stride and are looking like a "real" top team.

GO UTES
