Bishop, Demo duel over waste legislation

How can this be? Our representatives have morals and ethics, right? Rob Bishop is one of the worst representatives in the state and as for taking money we all know its not done openly, that's what campaign fund accounts are for. Campaign accounts are for personal use as well and legislation says we can't count that as an income account. So its tax free as well. Rob Bishop does not care about Utah's future unless there is something in it for him then he goes to the highest bidder. Being a representative in Utah is a cutthroat business with everyone clamoring for the highest donations and premiums that business can offer. Its only ethical that they share these donations or they get mad at each other and cry foul if someone interfers with or threatens their private campaign account funding. This system leaves the citizens out in the cold with no representation unless you can buy your way in to their office or put it down on the dining table.

Was it too hard to put the "Demo's" name in the headline?

Or why not put "Repub, Demo duel... ?"

Name recognition is very important in a campaign, especially a challenger to an incumbant. Why would a newspaper be so petty and partisan by showing the R's name and not the D's?

I don't think that it is very impartial or responsible
in your headline to call Rob Bishop by his last name and Morgan Bowen just by the term "Demo". Be fair and put both their names.

While I don't agree we should be bringing radioactive waste into Utah, I do think we need to support companies such as EnergySolutions.

We could use 4 nuclear power plants in Utah now.
They know how to make them safe. Lets put them in.

Green River. Salina. Mona. Delta.

I'm all for nuclear power plants in Utah. I don't mind taking care of our own waste, but not other countries/states. Though I do have an open mind about it. I don't know all there is to know about this subject I admit. I wouldn't mind storing lots in Nevada. So why not here????

It's interesting to see how excited people can become over any issue that contains the word, "nuclear." Have any of them ever visited the Energy Solutions disposal site? The level of radiation of materials disposed of there is so insignificant that it is almost undetectable. If they are so concerned, they should refuse any medical treatments using nuclear medicine. After all, that is the source of most of the material we are talking about.

Where's the harm in storing this type of waste in an area that is less than pristine, surrounded by salt deposits, the water if you could drink it would kill you, so what is wrong with storing the low level radioactive material there?
We need to deal with the jermain issues , like the pig of a bailout bill that cost over 800 billion dollars, and throw those bums who voted for it out.
Two of our representatives voted against it, a Demo
and a repubbie. Let the candidates run on what they have and can do, the trouble our great country is in is because of all this bi-partisan bickering and self interest. So look beyond some concocted issue and to the substance of the arguement, maybe we will get ourselves some real government.

Rob Bishop is an excellent Representative. He's a common-man who is very accessible to the people. I support his strong states-right's stance. the more power we give to the federal government, over time, the less freedoms we have. The way I understand it, this "italian" waste is similar to what Utah stores out there anyway. This is not high level waste like the Goshute thing. It's like comparing a mountain to a mole hill. And I think Matheson is grandstanding on the issue just because of the word "nuclear." His dad did that too as governor over the Wet eye bomb, which eventually was moved to Utah and disposed of safely.

Already been said, but I think Bowen deserves to have his name in the headline - blatantly obvious bias on the part of "that other paper".

I agree with Rob Bishop. THIS IS A BUSINESS DECISION! The confusion arises from the misunderstanding about the health effects of very low levels of ionizing radiation. It has been widely publicized by the news media,the regulatory agencies, and anti-nuclear activists that the tiniest amount of ionizing radiation adds to the cancer risk. THIS IS NOT TRUE! There is more scientific evidence that low dose radiation is beneficial to health than there is to the contrary. There is no danger to health from such waste when it is handled according to regulatory standards.
THIS IS STRICTLY A BUSINESS DECISION and if someone wants to pay Energy Solutions millions of dollars to take care of the waste why should we try to stop them? Some of it will go to Utah as TAXES so everyone could benefit.
