The 40 is not about speed, but about strait line acceleration. Many athletes
with above average top speed do not posses above average acceleration. A
footrace with a defensive back after catching a pass is about top speed not
acceleration. How many times did we see Harline run away from "faster"
defensive backs? Another often overlooked factor is endurance. How fast is the
athlete at the end of the game compared to the beginning. Sprinters can beat
middle distance runners for the first few sprints but then the endurance factor
kicks in and the fast, but not with blazing, middle distance runner surpasses
the sprinter.

I was told since grade school to forget about any ideas of the NFL. It is
extremely hard to make a pro football team no matter who you are or where you
play college. BYU fans shouldn't have to hide their faces. 1. Many BYU
athletes have played in the NFL. 2. Many very good athletes don't make it
in the NFL even after many accolades in college. Circumstance and luck can
dictate success or failure as well. (Poor Alex Smith) I think Collie will get
a shot at the pros, but we're the Cougars not the Packers. College
football rules.

more righteously. I mean he was the one that said the reason the beat the Utes
is because of his righteous living...they didnt seem to have any problem

The key to Collie's success isn't his speed anyhow. In the article he
gives the key if you read close. He talks about the coaches emphasizing techique
and leverage. If you watch him, he's big, strong and good at pushing off
without getting caught. I'm a Utah guy, but you have to like what he can
do, even if it is cheap ;)

can't catch you than I guess that's what they call game speed. Does

I love all this defining of speed on here. At the end of the day it is simply much easier to make a team with speed than to be a marginal guy and make a team. If both guys can catch, guess which one makes the team? Yep, the fast guy.

My 40 yard dash time was off too..... I really run a 6.8 instead of an 8.2.
It was definitely the person clocking me that made me get a bad time, not my
fault at all. I live right on and off the field so my time would definitely be
alot faster if it weren't for the timer.

Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.8 40 speed doesnt really matter if you can get open and

It's pretty amazing how jealous and insecure some BYU haters are that they
can't accept even the possibility of a BYU player succeeding in the NFL.
Nobody is comparing Collie with Jerry Rice except to show that 4.4 speed isn't the only thing required to be a successful NFL receiver.
They're so blinded by their hatred that they're not even willing to accept the opinion of someone like Bill Walsh on the skills and qualities he looks for in an NFL player.
What a sad world they must live in to be blinded by such hatred.

I commend collie, perhaps he will be the exception to the rule of a wide
reciever from the y to really excell..but somewhere they always get beat out at
the combine and training camp by a less heralded guy..but there's always
hope.

Everybody talking about the USU safety running down Collie, it is called angle
of pursuit. If you are already ahead of the WR and take a good angle you can
catch just about anybody. What you failed to realize was the DB that was
covering Collie was getting left in the dust behind him! If you don't
believe me, go check out the highlite and see Austin put space between him and
the DB covering him. He does have good speed!

I will take Austin Collie any time over many of the top line reciever's
in the country. He has football speed because he is strong and gets by some
faster guys. He will play on Sunday.

who cares about a 40 time? does running 4.3 make you a good football player?
certainly not. It helps to have speed but what it comes down to is football
instincts. Collie is sucessful because he runs good routes and makes plays on
the football field. He has the football speed that more than makes up for his
sub-par 4.6 40 time

yes it is well known that jerry rice wasn`t the fastest guy on the track one
thing that made him so special was his soft hands. And yes there is a
difference between gamespeed and trackspeed. Some players have deceptive speed,
or just have a knack for being in the right place. as for Collie blazing fast
or not he seems to always be open.

Actually, Miami Finished that season 10-2... and number 1 in the Sagarin
rankings. The Hurricanes would have been 11-1, but they played TY Detmer and
BYU...

I see collie catching the ball over the middle taking three steps then taking on
a db who pops the ball out collies hands. I see collie short arming passes.
The problem is that he makes so many plays. You start to expect him to make every play. He is a gifted reciever.
It's too bad the BYU schedule is so weak. I would love to see collie burn some big time SEC or BIG 12 db's.

Clayton, whoever yer are, ya should've seen me play at the high school
level. I could toss that pigskin 70 yards, falling to the ground, hit those
receivers in the numbers every time.

Collie knows that a good 40 time is one of the things scouts looks at or he
wouldn't be so up in arms about it in this article. He will keep racking up
huge numbers and end his career as BYU's leading receiver because he is
simply very good. But I'm sure he will be doing everything he can in prep
for the combine to bring his 40 time down as much as possible regardless of his
career stats.
And for you youngsters out there - Virgil Carter played 10 years in the NFL. Was voted offensive MVP of the Bears one season and was the first NFL QB to ever run the West Coast Offense under Walsh as a Bengal's QB. Carter, McMahon and Young probably logged the most playing time in the NFL with Nielson, Wilson and Detmer logging a few good years on the field as well. BYU is more famous as a QB factory for the great COLLEGE QBs they produce. Players like Sark, Bosco and even Walsh dominated in college but never stuck in the pros. I think Hall will fit into the great college but no pro category.

We can't compare Terrell Owens or Moss to Rice. So, until TO, RM, & AC make it to the NFL Hall of Fame this comparison is ridiculous @ best.

It is?? You should start from the beginning and re-read the article and each
post, because I think you missed something. Except for one sentence in the
article that pertains to his mission (off the field) the article is devoted
entirely to his athleticism. Accordingly, the posts also discuss Collie's
contribution in football.

Pac-10 school when the Cougs play in the VEGAS BOWL! Then I will watch the Utes

Wilson lead the Raiders pretty well. Enough that one of my H.S. coaches (huge
Raiders & Jim Plunket fan) made it known how much he hated Marc Wilson for
taking snaps away from Plunket. But the fact of the matter is Marc was often
was more consistent than Jim and coaches wanted that in the line up regardless
of what Raider nation and Al Davis wanted.

I wouldn't say that at all if a 10-2 record and Cotton Bowl win with an end of year #3 ranking in the AP and Coaches poll is tanking I'm sure most teams would take it.

never heard of a clayton barnes on any college football team, in his dreams he can do better then Max hall. Also i do not know of any utah college or univ. quarterbacks, that has been successful in the NFL oother then Young and Mcmahon.
