WAY too much is being made of Palin's "Washington-outsider" status. Washington is full of "outsiders" including our current president, from Midland, TX and vice president, from Caspar, Wyoming. Our last President was famously from Hope, Ark, and on and on.

Congress, by definition, is composed of outsiders, from places just like Wasilla, Alaska. Why did the bailout bill have to be stuffed with earmarks in order to pass? Because members of Congress place the interests of their local businesses and pet projects above the critical needs of the nation.

Washington does not need any more of this provincialism from small towns like Wasilla. Washington needs more expertise, management experience, and long-term thinking, from wherever in the country it happens to come.

Take it from me. I live and work for the federal government in Washington, DC. But like most of my fellow government workers and friends, I'm from somewhere else. In my case, Murray, UT.

it looks like more lies from the far far right, you make claims that no one else not even Rush, Hannity and Fox support do you care to give us the source of your information or do you want to just admit to lying?

People like Sarah Palin are the reason I watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report (and Saturday Night Live, as of late). Some of the funniest comedy on TV these days is coming from political humor, and while the GOP ticket is largely the target, neither party is portrayed particularly well. I thoroughly enjoyed Jon Stewart showing the clip of Palin at the debate saying, "Government is not the answer", then cutting to her answer in the same debate concerning the economy, "Government needs to step in and fix this problem."

Uhh ... Smeagol/Gollum anyone?

Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air.
How remarkably sad.

Sad that there are those so easily duped by the right-wing smear campaigns they are famous for.

As a stooge for the far-right, I see she is doing the same Rove/Limbaugh trash-talking that put the dynamic duo (Cheney and Bush) into the top positions:
"Obama hates the troops!"
"Obama isn't as good of American as me!"
"Obama wants socialim!
"Obama want everybody to be gay and to have abortions!"

Today's conservatives are a far cry from our parents' type of conservative. These are the nastiest, ugliest, most fascism-espousing individuals this country has ever seen since the McCarthy Era.
OC Guy | 11:38 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I wasn't aware that either Bill Clinton or John Edwards were running for elective office this year.

The comparison votes must make is between Obama and McCain, who, by the way, left a disabled wife for the cute, wealthy blonde (John's in good company with Clinton and Edwards). And they must compare Biden to Palin, with more attention to Palin than usual because of McCain's age and health.

Given these matchups, it's no wonder the polls now show "reliably Republican" states--Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Virgina--now too close to call, and "must win" states like Ohio and Floria are drifting into the Democratic column.

Vernal may vote 80% for McCain, but if you think that you are in the mainstream of American political opinion, you are deluding yourself. The world does not revolve around rural Utah.
re: OC Guy | 12:25 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Way to go OC Guy!

We get tired of the far-right not facing up to the issues (their group is responsible for the entire mess) and instead try to divert the talk towards Clinton and Edwards.
Do these fools think we are as [blanking] dumb as they are?

All Sarah Palin does is look good while playing a concerned hockey mom issuing political buzzwords.

Its just different packing used by the powers that be to keep alot of you distracted while the country goes south.

Its not quite the fear card the current adminsitration is so good at playing but enough of you have fallen for it.

So, I wonder what subliminal messages are pumped out whenever Rush, Billo, Pretty boy Sean, Savage, & coultergeist speak... Joseph Goebbels would be impressed.

"And, as far as Obama having a terrorst for a friend, it is MUCH more than a passing acquaintance. He has been strongly associated with him since 1995. There have been many meetings in Ayers home and alot of association there, much more than a passing acquaintance...."

The New York Times states differently. They did indepth research on this subject and said they were not close. If I was linked to everyone I've ever served on a board with, I would be in trouble too. You know because???
Palin's Un-American activities | 1:44 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
"My government is my worst enemy. I'm going to fight them with any means at hand."

This was former revolutionary terrorist Bill Ayers back in his old Weather Underground days, right? Imagine what Sarah Palin is going to do with this incendiary quote as she tears into Barack Obama this week.

Only one problem. The quote is from Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American who founded the Alaska Independence Party. Inconveniently for Palin, that's the very same secessionist party that her husband, Todd, belonged to for seven years and that she sent a shout-out to as Alaska governor earlier this year. ("Keep up the good work," Palin told AIP members. "And God bless you.")

Hatuletoh | 1:49 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Jeff: It's people like you who vote for the candidate that they "like" the best, instead of the best man or woman for job, that get us into situations like we're in now. And leaving that whole morass aside for a second, what exactly makes Gov. Palin so trustworthy? You "feel" that way, right? Maybe in your "gut"? You can "just tell", right?
fjb | 2:07 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
A breath of something, to be sure. Fresh air, though? I think not.

To answer the question in the original letter: I'd MUCH rather have a Bill Clinton or a John Edwards in the white house than a Sarah Palin. As it turns out, though, that's not the choice. The choice is between Barack Obama and John McCain (albeit, given his age and health, Sarah Palin is certainly part of that choice).

We're fortunate. For the first time in a great many years, one of the choices is actually a GOOD choice. Indeed, I'm more optimistic about Barack Obama as President than about *any other Presidential candidate in the last 40 years*, excepting only Bill Richardson.

Now the bills are coming due. The colossal failure of the Bush administration has destroyed the right wing's appeal to most Americans. In effect, conservatism has returned to being what it was in the days of Goldwater -- a fringe movement. McCain is desperately trying to disavow the movement he has followed all his life by painting himself as a "maverick," but as Joe Biden pointed out in perhaps the most devastating retort in his "debate" with Palin, he has not voted like a maverick on any issue of importance -- he has voted like a Republican.

Which is why so much hangs on this election. An Obama victory could signal a fundamental correction in the course of American politics, one that could last for decades. If McCain wins, it will mean that all the forces that led to the rise of modern conservatism -- racial resentment, unthinking anti-governmentalism and hatred of "liberals" -- still reign supreme. And that would force us all to stare into a national chasm, one deeper than any since McCarthyism.
A better choice | 2:18 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Palin seems more honest that Mitt. She represents a religion conservative Christians can relate to. You can't call Palin an intellectual elitist.

Re: Wesley | 2:31 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Sarah Palin leaves me wondering whether there will *BE* a future to have any hope for. She seems to combine all the folksy, clueless incompetence of G. W. Bush (as he was when he was campaigning in 2000) with the sneakiness and hunger for power of Dick Cheney, and the clueless, incompetent belligerence of the Bush administration post-9/11. She's the worst of all worlds, all rolled up in one.

If you have no plan then just smear your opponent. The standard GOP move.
re "Anonymous | 11:23 a.m." | 3:11 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Your posting was so ironic. You say, "Today's conservatives are a far cry from our parents' type of conservative. These are the nastiest, ugliest, most fascism-espousing individuals this country has ever seen since the McCarthy Era".

Yet our parents generation you hold so highly WAS the McCarthy Era.

My father and I talk about politics all the time and we totally see eye-to-eye on most things. Conservatives haven't changed as much as you think (maybe Republicans have). I get the feeling your impressions of Conservatives is the main thing that has changed (fueled mainly by the rtheoric you and your party keep peddling).

You obviously don't really know much about either generation of conservatives if you think they are very different in their values and ideals.

To "A better choice": I want to set aside for a minute your preference for Palin over Romney (or over Biden or anyone else) and address your disdainful use of the phrase "intellectual elitist."

Why is elitism such a bad thing? We wouldn't go to the ballpark or watch the Olympics if it were regular schlubs out there competing. No, we prize the best athletes, the elites. I doubt you'd want an average doctor to do your brain surgery if you could opt for a premier brain surgeon. Navy seals are elite. Why is it a bad thing to rise to the top in intellectual fields? Why do so many, when it comes to politics, seem to prefer the average and commonplace over those who have attained and exhibit greater distinction in their knowledge and command of issues?

Politics ain't beanbag. Running the country is extraordinarily difficult and requires much skill and knowledge. The unprecedented challenges facing the country are going to require more than just average thinkers. If we have not always needed the best and brightest, those with the deepest insights and abilities to solve problems in the past, surely we need those people now. Why this anti-intellectualism?

You should listen to the liberal station CNN. They verifed that Eyers received the grant, and OBama distributed the money for Eyers, but not to the main stream schools.

Can any one mention one thing Obama has done, that qualifies him to be president?

Bush has been a disaster. I dont like McCain but I would rather have him as president than some one who has to lie about his past, and wont talk about all the radicals he has been associated with the past twenty years. Eyers, Wright. that criminal in Chicago that helped Obama, buy his house, and is on his way to jail.

The only qualification Obama has is he can read a teleprompter.

Im concerned over the fact the Gov Palin uses her charm to work the crowd up to violence. Reportedly, some man in the crowd (in Florida) yelled, Kill him! during her address. Watch this, Matt Taibbi of the Rolling Stone said about Gov. Palin "It was like watching Gidget address the Reichstag." One persons breath of fresh air is another persons Holy Cow!

Honest? Like she told the legislature to to study troopergate and then refused to cooperate? The kook pastor who chased a witch from his community that she supports? The husband who admires a successionist? Like hoe she's saying things about Obama that have been debunked? Or is it how she telling things about her governorship that never happened...like money for Darfur that she lobbied and voted against? THAT kind of honest?

Palin has cracks in her armor @ 12:54 a.m.:

"Palin is a good woman, but I lost degrees of respect for her when she falsely accused Obama of having a terrorist friend..."

Obama had a terrorist friend, William Ayers who blew up government buildings and claimed he should have done more damage. Ayers must have been a friend since Obama kicked off his campaign in Ayers' house in Chicago.

"...who it turns out was only a passing acquaintance, that he spend some serving on a board with."

Rarely does a candidate kick off his campaign in a passing acquaintance's home.

"Either she lied or she didn't bother to check her facts."

She didn't lie, you lied. You have always been against her.
Sound logic? | 5:02 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Let's use a model Utahans can relate to. Palin is good because she is an outsider. Why not bring Dobson and his "focus on the family," into a LDS Church leadership capacity? He would bring a different set of eyes in to church decisions. He has the church management experience too.
Does she hate our flag? | 5:09 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Palin's Un-American activities,

"'My government is my worst enemy. I'm going to fight them with any means at hand..."

"Only one problem.

That's so unfair. How can you point out that Todd Palin was a member of this anti-American Party. We know you would have liked to mention that the Vice Chair of the Party claimed last October that Sarah Palin herself was a member and that she only marked X next to Republican so she could easily infiltrate the Republican Party.

Coincidently, whenever Sarah runs for major office her husband changes his voter registration to that of unaffiliated. They want us to believe that they aren't the bad guys but we know the truth. They are intent on destroying this country. The Obama's were never members of a Party that called for destroying the U.S. unlike Todd and Sarah.

Shameful | 6:13 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
MRZ: In the VP debate Palin chastised Biden for talking about the Bush administration and not about the future and needs of the country. Now the McCain campaign is so desperate that they are talking incessantly about Ayers--whose despicable acts took place 40 years ago! What's the point? Are they trying to imply that Obama is a terrorist? or that he sympathizes with those acts he has repeatedly repudiated?

Do you, sir, who never fail to mention Ayers, actually think that Obama hates America and is in sync with this man? Do you actually believe that Ayers will have any influence on an Obama administration whatsoever? Do you really believe that this is what the country needs right now?

This is the most shameful type of politics and people who really love the country should find it repugnant.

you might want to go to CNN and see the report on Anderson Coopers show about the detailed and indepth relationship Obama has with Ayers.

You can have your opinion but you can't make up your own facts!

Again for all you Obama lovers out there....what are HIS qualifications for POTUS?

ACORN fellow?
Ayers friend?
Wright mentor?
Rezco financing?
Infanticide voting?
50% or higher effective tax rate in today's market?
Present voting when he doesn't want to take a stand?
Most liberal senator in Congress?

Gus, your posts are laughers. So partisan and so untrue. What exactly is the fringe Right-Wing? Is the opposite of that definition the fringe Left-Wing? OK...

As for all of you who are complaining about her answers and her telling Ifill that, I would have to. She answered about as many questions as Biden did. And she didn't make the stupid lie that Global Warming is 100% man-made. That's a fact? Really? You defending that statement from the plagiarizer?

It's amazing at how the women on here just eat of up other women. You cannibalize your own when they don't have your same viewpoint. I've never seen such hate spewed by the same gender. And I thought women were supposed to be kinder and gentler than men. Wrong on my part....

Liberals are attacking Palin who is the VP nominee so they don't have to talk about the no resume that Obama has....

I'm amazed that all of you liberals have been duped by this fraud. He's down for the count with Muslims and not America if it comes down to it. Just read his book he says so....

You go! Vote for the Republicans for whatever reasons, as misguided as they may be. Utah will go Republican even if we do get into another Depression. But I'm hopeful the rest of the country is starting to wisen up. And then you can gripe about inconsequential issues as the country pulls out of this mess--under Democratic leadership.

the clowns who worry about Palin being one heartbeat from the Presidency, apparently haven't come to grips with who is two away, right now... and one of those hearts is only beating because of a small battery in the pacemaker.

No wonder America is in trouble. Americans are stoopid. All they do, is rant and rave at each other, while the politicians are laughing their butts off at all of us.

Flush this country. The game is over. Let's see if Mexico and China can do a better job. Its a cinch no actual American has a clue what is a fact, and what is media hype. Forums like this, only make things worse because you think that since you whined in a message, you are a real American.

"Are they trying to imply that Obama is a terrorist? or that he sympathizes with those acts he has repeatedly repudiated?"

A person is identified by the company he keeps... William Ayers (terrorist), Reverend Jeremiah Wright (America Hater), and Tony Rezko (criminal). That says alot about ones character.

"Do you, sir, who never fail to mention Ayers, actually think that Obama hates America and is in sync with this man?"

It's hard to tell. We know that his wife, Michelle, wasn't proud of America until just a few months ago. Who knows what was in Obama's mind? So we have to look around and see who his close associates are and what their disposition is.

"Do you actually believe that Ayers will have any influence on an Obama administration whatsoever?"

I fully believe that Obama will put in his cabinet or other positions, people like Lewis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, or Jesse Jackson.

"This is the most shameful type of politics and people who really love the country should find it repugnant."

What I find repugnant is Obama's friends and especially his wife (see her above statement).

association people start bringing up McCain's? G. Gordon Liddy: Most would say he was a domestic terrorist, at least when it comes to what he wanted to do. He's certainly a convicted felon and treason is involved. He's not exactly company McCain would want people to know he's been keeping. Then John Singlaub and his group that were involved with the Iran-Contra Affair. Does McCain realize this could come back and bite him? Or is his plan the same as it is with Keating? Tell the world he really didn't have anything to do with it. Say it lots of times. Call people liars when they say otherwise. And then just hope it sticks.

To WRZ--finally something objective to prove that you are a little paranoid and slightly racist: Obama will win and will not appoint Farrakhan, Jackson, or Sharpton to his cabinet. Wait and see. In the meantime try not to be so narrow minded as to come up with all this crazy stuff.
King George | 10:32 a.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Perhaps if you put Palin with Obama then we would most definitely have a breath of HOT AIR!

I'm not voting for anyone! This is the worst US government setup to have ever been conceived in this country. The United State of America would do best to hand themselves back over to Great Britain, who is worthy and really wanted this country in the first place. As far as I can see, we are doomed.

It's too heart wrenching for me to know that so many immature wimps are running our government as itis...very sad indeed.
Dare to Differ | 5:20 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
The last time the phrase "A breath of Fresh Air' was used in Washington circles it was coined by Tip O'Neal. It was a popular metaphore for a young two term Congressman from Missouri. His name was Jerry Litton. Litton died along with his wife and two children in a very mysterious plane crash on the very night that he had just won Stewart Symington's Senate seat. Symington was Jerry's biggest backer...significant since Symington's son a Republican was Jerry's opponent. Had he not been killed that night more than likely it would have been Jerry Litton in the White House and not Bill Clinton.....and the entire world would have a much different outlook than what we have today.

Being a breath of fresh air may be a qualification for many things, but it surely isn't enough to make you ready to be president of this country.
Anyone running for VP should be qualified to be president.
She doesn't do well in unscripted interviews. She doesn't mind lying and doesn't apologize when she gets caught. And continues to tell the same lies.
Since being nominated, more and more disturbing information has continued to come out about her lack of ethics.
All the fresh air in the world doesn't nullify things like using more than $21,000 in false claims for travel expenses for her children.
She and her husband have recently been part of a group to seceed Alaska from the union. She supports this group.
Fresh air? doesn't nullify illegally spending $150,000+ for clothing and makeup.
Her education has nothing to do with public administration. Her experience is on a very small scale.
Right now we need the very smartest, coolest-headed, well-organized, well-informed, experienced person we can find. We need someone who knows how other people in the world think, because we need to be able to work with those people.
Fresh air? It's not enough.
