McMahon was a great QB, nobody disputes that, but considering how he felt (feels) about BYU, I'm not so sure he should be inducted. After all, if he doesn't care about BYU, about graduating, about representing BYU, then why should BYU care if he's in their hall of fame?

Being in or out will change how good he was, or what he did, or all the records he set. If a school, any school, has criteria for getting into their hall of fame, then those are the rules, abide by them or don't get in.

I have a bit of a hard time accepting all the derrogatory things McMahon said about BYU and the LDS church, and then honoring the guy. Let's all just leave it alone.
Exaggeration??? | 8:58 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
30 pound brace? The average human leg may weigh 15 pounds. So the brace weighted twice the weight of his leg? I doubt it. But its no surprise that facts mean little to Cougars.

The reason a university exists is primarily for education--not sports. If McMahon doesn't get his degree, he shouldn't get in the Hall of Fame. Case Closed.

The best yewt quartetback ever to play at the u. would be number 11 on the list - the rest would have come from BYU. go yewts!!!

Double Standard | 7:33 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008

Amen. If his behavior at BYU disqualifies him for the HOF why was he allowed to play at BYU?

BYU enjoys the stature the do today largely because of Jim McMahon.

Jim created the interest in BYU that allowed the building of the stadium.
McMahon and BYU | 9:17 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
The two are forever connected, whether either one completely likes it or not. Every BYU fan and most football fans know what a great BYU QB McMahon was and the records he set. The best BYU QB ever? Maybe. There have been some great ones. BYU did more for Jim McMahon than Jimbo did for BYU. He knew what the rules were but he was above that. If BYU/Edwards had not bent over backwards to help Jim, his name would not be a household word in Utah or anywhere else. There were other guys who could have QB'd BYU's team, no one player is the team. They would have been just fine without Jim. So come up with a way for him to get the credits or just give them to him for "life experiences," he's certainly had plenty of those, award him a degree and induct him in the Hall of Fame. Same for Buck, Elewonibi, Hudson and Morrell. They all belong there, just have to nudge them in.
McMahon Football Fan | 9:19 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Jim has provided BYU football fans with some of our most memorable moments. As a football player, I'm very fond of him. He had all the qualities to succeed on the football field.

As a person, I'm actually embarrassed that he is associated with BYU. His arrogant, self-centered, above-the-rules attitude is the antithesis of BYU.

If BYU actually kicked him out of school, that's very disappointing. That would be very self-serving and not what I would expect of BYU.

I'm very sad for Jim's father. Your son was a tremendous athlete and I'm glad he received the accolades he has. I, however, don't look at Jim as an ambassador, representative, or icon for BYU.

As a fan of BYU as an institution (not just sports), I'm not loosing any sleep over this. If the BYU Hall of Fame is important enough to Jim for him to get is 9 credits, that's fine. If not, let's just agree to disagree and move on. The BYU football program is more important that any one individual. Lest we forget, receivers had to catch his passes and the line had to block.

Goodbye Jim. Have a wonderful life.

McMahon was probably the best quarterback to play at BYU. But to claim that he put BYU on the map and without him BYU would not be where they are now is ridiculous. Let's not forget the other greats that have played quarterback at BYU - Carter, Shiede, Nielsen, Wilson, Young, Boscoe, Detmer, Sarkisian, Doman, Beck, and now Hall. It's been a team effort - on both sides of the ball - to get BYU to where they are today.

As far as BYU's hall of fame, as soon as McMahon completes the requirements he should be voted in. The ball is in his court and no exception should be made.

27 years have passed since McMahon was at BYU. Hopefully both sides have matured a bit and can come together on this.

To Double Standard,

stop being intellectually dishonest. Bronco does not recruit missionaries but he will listen if approached by family and friends. There is a big difference and if you don't see it then your colon must not have any lighting.

To All Knowing:

The lack of logic seen in todays population never ceases to amaze me. You state the problem is one of religiousity yet Holmoe was pretty clear the lack of a degree is what stood in the way. And then we were given evidence by Rock of other greats who were not inducted BECAUSE OF NO DEGREE. Once you can make a logical argument as to how McMahon is being treated differently on this point, then we can move on to you suspected reason for the slight...religion. Until then, you seem in the same position as Double Standard... a victim of government schools.

We all know the well spring of hypocracy at BYU starts at the admin building and the flow is strengthened by that abortion they call the "Honor Code Office". But for now, I ahve to agree that no degree = no Hall of Fame.

Reminder | 9:26 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I think it should be mentioned again that it was McMahon's father, not Jim himself, who brought this matter up again by sending out a bunch of letters to the BYU community.

While Jim the quarterback probably does feel some resentment for his exclusion from the BYU Hall of Fame (who knew we had one?), it wasn't him that complained about it this time.

Let's give him a break.
BYU Fan Gary | 9:27 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Let McMahon into the BYU Hall of fame the day they let Pete Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Wake up! It is not all about the game.
Sith | 9:27 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Get online Jim and get those 9 short hours taken care of. That way you wouldn't need to show your face on the BYU Campus and still accomplish your objective....LOL!!

Turn this over to an un biased third party- maybe Mike Ditka!!
Gretzky | 9:34 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
sounds like it is pretty easy for McMahon to get it done for his father.
Holmoe is ready to help him. outstanding. humility, forgiveness, and perserverance. that's all it takes. I for one fan, would love to see McMahon's jersey up in Lavell Edward's stadium.
Petey | 9:35 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I've often wondered why he isn't in the hall of fame, now I know. You must graduate. His father says a rule they put in to keep him out. Wrong, it has always been a rule. We don't know why he was kicked out, BYU won't and shouldn't say. Like a church court unless you were there you only get one side of that story. Name the field after him or the locker room or something. But don't change the rules for him. Yet do offer a olive branch and let's see if he has grown up in his 50's. Name the press box after Paul James while your at it.
Keith | 9:45 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
BYU has said he only needs to fill the requirement----that is a requirement for all-----to finish school...Do you lower your requirements for one who still has the oportunity to qualify...This is in Jim court now. If he wants it----it will not take much for him to be there and I certainly will be exited for him if he undertakes to do so. He certainly was one of the very best... Do it Jim!!!!
pruneemac | 9:49 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
As long as we are being consistant in the policy then it's up to Jim.

Note to Jim: Be the bigger man and get your degree! We all want you to be in the Hall of Fame. It isnt one without you!
Nolan Furniss | 9:55 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Jim, the clock is ticking. Do you have one more "Hail Mary" before the gun sounds on your Father? The Miracle Bowl happened because you alone wouldn't give up. Maybe it's time to once again reach deep down within your competive spirit and convince the BYU world that you can again orchestrate a miracle.
Brother Austad | 9:55 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I am the sunday school second counselor in my ward. If Brother McMahon was not keeping the commandments, he should not be in the BYU hall of fame. That is not a good example for our young men to see.
Bottom Line | 9:56 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
He was the greatest QB BYU football ever had and probably ever will, certainly deserving of any and all athletic honors. He was one of the worst human beings BYU football ever had. BYU should NOT change the rules for McMahon or anyone else. It is interesting that Jim's hatred for BYU far exceeds his love for his dad. He is too proud to complete 9 easy credits at BYU thinking it would give them too much satisfaction and somehow too proud to do something for his Dad. I feel for his Dad a great deal. He somehow knew it would be easier for BYU and the Board to change their policy than get his son to complete 9 credits...and he doesn't even have to set foot in Utah to do it. I read alot about what Jim did for BYU...almost nothing about what BYU did for Jim McMahon. I had hoped someday he would grow up and get over some problems with BYU and look at the good things that happened, of course you have to want to first.
Aggie | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I went to college in the 80's - I'm LDS and chose to go Utah St. over BYU because I didn't want to worry about how long my hair was or other silly rules. Jim should have known what he was getting into and you got to live with your decisions.

As a BYU and Aggie fan, I'd love to see his retired number in the rafters, but if it never gets there, I'll still be thinking you Jim.
Ernest T. Bass | 9:59 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Real classy organization they have down there in Provo. I don't want to hear that BYU has more class than any other school ever again.
Jim, just do it! | 10:02 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
A few credit hours are all that stand between you and induction? Take those courses. We'd love to have you in that Hall of Fame!
AZ Dave | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
It's Football I'm sure Jim wasn't the only one not to follow the Honor Code on and off the football team. Give him a FOOTBALL honor. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones
Jim's Friend | 10:08 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Jim,

Call Holmoe and work out what you need to do. I am sure everyone will be helpful. Don't you think it is time to let all the negative go and do something positive about this?
Never a fan of BYU admin | 10:09 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Like many BYU grads, I had more than my share of run-ins with BYU administration. And have watched incredulously as each of my seven children-all BYU grads had their own petty imbroglios with the ASB.

As grateful as I am for my BYU education and the wonderful values taught there as a part of the curriculum, I am convinced that there are members of the BYU administration that believe that their role is to show the students that there is "opposition in all things". They seem to cherish that role and go out of their way to make life as difficult as possible for the student body.

Having gotten that off my chest, I believe that it is important that the administration reach out to Jim McMahon in the form of his old teammate Tom Holmoe and do everything possible to reach some sort of understanding that will allow us to honor Jim for his amazing career.

Almost certain that such a "win-win" situation is not in the nature of the administration, but perhaps a enough public pressure could be brought upon them that they might make such a gesture of goodwill.

Time to forgive and forget and remember.

We all love Jim the football player, but rules are rules and he needs to finish.
Anonymous | 10:16 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
1. Great quarterback.
2. Lousy student with no integrity in following the code of honor; should have been kicked out much earlier.
3. Probably has no desire to finish his degree.
4. Dad wants it more than he does.
5. BYU should remain consistent now, even if they didn't remain consistent in applying discipline under Honor Code guidelines.
6. Jim McMahon will always be remembered as one of, if not the best, football player BYU ever had.
7. What type of individual do you want as a role model for your child?

You wrote: "He was a Catholic kid living it Utah - he knew how different he was from Mormons"

Are you serious ?? Would you care to elaborate on these "differences". It's attitudes like yours that cause such misunderstanding and distrust between people of differnet faiths. It must be wonderful to be so pious, sanctimonious and self-righteous.
Jim McMahon should apologize to no one.

Put him in the Hall of Fame.
Put him in! | 10:19 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
If ever there was someone worthy of being in the BYU athletic Hall of Fame, it is McMahon. It is a "sports" Hall of Fame, and that is where he excelled and brought a lot of good to BYU. He is certainly more deserving than some others who are in. There is no valid reason not to put him in.
ChuckF14 | 10:27 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
he only broke rules... not laws, like players of today
With all due respect... | 10:28 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
...to Jim McMahon, LaVell Edwards is actually the one that put BYU on the map.

I graduated from BYU in April of 1981. I really enjoyed being there to see McMahon lead our team to all those wins and especially the one against SMU in the miracle bowl. I agree he was a great QB for us and I'm really glad we had him in our program.

Too bad BYU kicked him out right after his last bowl game. Sounds like the honor coders had their undies in a knot over McMahon but LaVell had enough pull to keep him at BYU until his football eligibility was done. But if they hadn't given him the boot would he actually have stayed to finish his degree? I wonder.

But he is the one who has to decide if being in BYU's hall of fame is important enough to be something he wants. Tom Holmoe is a good guy for trying to help him with this but as the saying goes 'you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink'.
Cougar Fan ...Class of 83 | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I went to BYU during the McMahon days. He was definitely a winner....a competitor. It wasn't until I read his autobiography that I learned for his disdain for the school that gave him an opportunty to show off and use his talents.

In the autobiography "McMahon", Jim McMahon writes ""Happiness was Provo in the rearview mirror" and "the sight he he had ever seen".

Jim's dad may want his son in the BYU Hall of Fame. But I'm not aware of Jim trying to make any kind of amends.

Maybe both BYU and Jim McMahon can take steps toward each other to make his otherwise deserved induction into the Hall of Fame happen. I appreciated his football skills. I was disappointed that after he chose to ignore and flaunt an Honor Code that had agreed to follow, that he chose to "diss" the school, rather than take responsibility for his actions. I chalk it up to the folly of youth. I believe we all have faults..and all can learn from our past mistakes. Best wishes to both Jim McMahon Sr. and Jim McMahon Jr.
We grew up on BYU football! | 10:34 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
No doubt, Jim is the 'BEST EVER' to wear a Cougar uniform.

I've never seen any player contribute more for his team, to his school, or to the sport, at any level. He is truly a unique player and human being.

Not only does he deserve to be inducted, he should be the center piece along with Coach.

I could recall 100 stories from his play on the field. However, two stories that are dear to me: 1) On the 'Carson Show' one night... Johnny, "... Jim, what is the best thing that ever happened to you at BYU?" Jim, "I met my beautiful wife at BYU". 2) Jim has been very charitable to those in need over the years, though never been talked about much. That is just Jim being Jim.

I'm only the recipient of great memories. Likewise, the best thing ever to happen to me at BYU... I met my beautiful bride as well.

God bless you Jim! Keep being you! And I'll see you in the BYU hall of fame.

Long over due!
Self Righteousness | 10:35 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
The only reason McMahon didn't make it is because he didn't live up to the BYU code of ethics. Lavell and BYU turned a blind eye to the drinking, sleeping around, partying because he helped them win. McMahon also made the comment in a magazine or newspaper that he gets a sick feeling when he flys over Provo. BYU owes a thank you to McMahon and McMahon owes a thank you to BYU. It is sort of a sick interdependent relationship. McMahon and BYU need to come together and settle their differences. McMahon has been a jerk but BYU hasn't practiced what they preach by forgiving and turning the other cheek. McMahon helped give BYU a national name. He was third in the Heisman and won a Super Bowl long before the beloved Steve Young. I'm on the side of Jim's dad. Larry Miller finally forgave Adrian Dantley, BYU should have forgiven Jim Bob years ago.
woolybruce | 10:40 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Perfect example where rules do not make sense. If McMahon was such a bad representative of BYU, they should have done something about it in year 1, or 2, or 3 or ... Not the day after his finished his last football game. They ignore the rules when it is in their benefit.
BYUJACK | 10:54 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I went to and graduated from BYU. I am sure I did everything Jim McMahon did when I was there.

He is the best quarterback and football player ever to play at BYU and he should have his number retired and be in the hall of fame. It is a crime it isnt.
haunyocker | 11:04 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Jim McMahon used BYU as much as his father says BYU used his son. The difference is that McMahon knew what the rules were and he arrogantly flaunted and broke them. I doubt, that with McMahon's arrogance, he would be humble enough to do what others have done. His fathers demand explains why McMahon is like he is. There were many schools for which he could have played. But he knew the football program that Edwards created would showcase his talents. So it seems terribly hypocritical of his father to now demand that he be put into the Hall of the school he loudly demeaned. If he didn't like BYU, why did he go there? He was a userhe used Edwards talents as a coach and BYU's reputation that was established well before he got there. This is just another example of his expectation that rules don't apply to him. The fact that he told his dad not to send this letter illustrates his understanding that his negative actions directed at BYU rules off the football field were true. Maybe he understands his attitude and actions don't contribute to his deserving to be in the Hall.
RE:True Blue | 11:04 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008

Jim McMahon deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. He represented BYU football with greatness. Give him what he earned. The right to be known as one of the great football players of BYU. That is what the Hall of Fame represents."

He did not earn Hall of Fame Status. He did not earn his degree. Holmoe is his biggest fan and as AD, can't do it, only Jim can.

I think McMahon is my favorite QP going back to Sheide. My favorite game was the SMU Holiday Bowl.

But he got out of the Limo to go sign with chicago with a cigar and a coors light ws it to dis BYU?
He moved on. It was to dis Chicago. The Pluto headband in the Superbowl did not say Plato, it said Pluto.

Until Jim McMahon respects himself he does not deserve the accolades. It's all on him.

When will Jim Mcmahon mature?

When eill he deserve what hea has earned?

It's up to him now.

I met Jim McMahon once at football camp as a teenager. He treated me very well. Was very personable and nice. I think that BYU needs to make an exception in his case. He is an outstanding football player. Probably the best leader that BYU has ever had. Maybe not athletically the strongest but certainly his leadership skills made up for one eye, a bad shoulder and knee.
I was also once a student at BYU but ended up graduating elsewhere. I still view BYU as my school. They take my donations gladly. JIm McMahon donated big time to BYU. He went on to make many of us proud in the Pros. Jim has had problems in life. Like many of us he has overcome them in a very public setting. I hope that BYU will choose to take the high road on this and help Jim McMahon receive this great honor.

"The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints"? What would Jesus Christ say about this? Do not judge him. Fogive him. But "HE" would say the worst infraction of "HIS" code is to be a hypocrite! They kicked him out the minute his eligibility was ended? Jesus Christ ought to kick them out of his fold. Remember the worst violation of "HIS" code is to be a hypocrite! If you don't believe me read what he says in Matt. This type of action is the reason that many people in the world don't take the Mormons to be serious Christians. But many of them can be seen as self righteous, judgemental pompous jerks. Get him in the Hall. It will do you all good.

Bob in line | 11:35 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Could they retire his jersey as a sign of respect for his contributions on the field, and then once he finishes three classes he gets to join the Hall of Fame?

I suppose that is splitting hairs though I really like the requirement to have graduated. College is about an education, not football. That is an added bonus.

Right now the big deal in the other world of college sports comes from the NBA in which phenoms enroll in college for one year, likely never attend a class, take their team into the NCAA tournament, drop school the moment the tournament is over and go into the NBA draft.

We need to focus on what college is all about.

As for those three class Jim, my 13 year old daughter has already taken one online class and passed it. You could do three in your sleep.

Until then that throw into the endzone...sadly, the only person national that remembers it is the Craig James guy on ESPN. And that's because he was on the losing end.

Go BYU!

PS Ernest T Bass, please give it up. You are one of those who spends most of your time hating BYU.
Chip | 11:41 a.m. Oct. 5, 2008
It may be that BYU waited to kick him out until after the Holiday bowl for Jim's sake and to save him the embarrasment. Who knows and the BYU officials will never make the reasons public. How ever time changes all people and my understanding is Jim is a different person who has matured as a family man. I believe both sides could come together and heal wounds. No matter what the reasons both the school and the player benefitted from the ossociation. Jim was a great player that was not LDS and the school tolerated some of his antics. Water under the bridge. Let's find a way to honor him for his actions on the field as that is what I treasure.
Texas BYU Fan | 12:24 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Let's retire his jersey - put it up at Edwards stadium for the other teams to see and remember.

Then, BYU should give him 9 externship credits in management or organizational behavior for leading his team to the Superbowl.

People have received degrees from BYU with a lot less leadership and skills.
