I had to laugh at the comment regarding the Pope's possible attendance at the temple open house. The LDS Church has around thirteen million members many of which are inactive versus the Catholic Church (oldest Christian denomination by 1500 years) which has well over one billion.

The Pope, past and present have been in other houses of worship and met with various religious leaders from other faiths.

However since only certain members of the LDS church are allowed to go to the Temple after the open house someone better extend the invitation early to the Pope if you actually want him to see it. There is little time to have an open house before it's officially opened for Temple work and he's often booked years in advance.

To the 1:46 commentator,
I was not aware that Nauvoo was a foriegn country.
There is a stake in Rome.
We do not need nay sayers and doubters but people who believe.

Tears of joy came to my eyes when I heard the announcement for the temple in Italy. The Italian saints have prayed and fasted for so many years for this. For those of us who served missions in Italy, we know that we are truly seeing the mercies and blessings of the Lord in response to the incredible faith and sacrifice of the members in Italy and the Mediterranean area.

Auguri Tutti!

So prideful and your the discounts and negative comments on the Catholic Church are outragious. I am a newly moved 'Utah' Catholic and was interested in the article but after reading the comments??? You are all a little sick? I respect my mormon neighbors but find them a little culturally peculiar. Now I know where that comes from. I just don't get it and maybe what my non-mormon are saying is right. I don't see much of what you would call news content on this post much let Christ like behavior. I am a little blown back. Pride and superiority are not good; primarily when your a very very small fish in a big pond a not a very well respected minnow at that!

President Monson said "Greater Kansas City Area" that can mean Independence, Far West or somewhere else in the area. The important thing is, the greater Kansas City area is the land of Zion. We own the land for the Temple in Far West, we don't own the land where the first temple in Independence is suppose to be built yet. The first because Joseph Smith designated that spot in Independence to have 24 temples. I personally think Far West is the best chance.

Word of the temple in Rome is truly wonderful! As we read, "We glory in our Lord." Happiness, gratefulness, are not pridefulness. We are grateful to the Catholic church for allowing our temple into their country, and greatly humbled. We bless them for their open-mindedness in this matter. We love our brothers and sisters, both inside and outside of our church, and give to the Catholic church the respect and admiration they earn and deserve.

Just read the article and caught my attention. A young gal at the office today raved how the Church had surpassed the catholics and the vast accomplishment of conquering Rome. I found it a little odd but just her go on. I think Conference is great but brings out the buggyness of us all and IT is NOT the spirit. Settle down people as it makes us look rabid.

It would be great when the First Presidency announces a new mission and then a new temple in the Middle East! That would help stem the tide of terrorism!
re: Susan 11:51 | 2:15 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Tell me Susan, you are aware of what is happening in countries like Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc? I know, I bet you are proposing a temple be built in either Medina, Jeddah, or Mecca? Suggest you look up these cities and see what importance they are to Islam and Allah and see if they would even allow mormons to even enter their country, let alone built a church/temple/mission. How naive!

This is great news, this will and has brought the Church to greater media attention worldwide as I read Kansas, New Mexico websites etc. publishing this story on their news websites, so that more people can receive the blessings that the Church has to offer, great to have another temple in Europe, and the rest of the world, we have 2 temples here in England, it's just amazing.
Bush To the Last Breath | 11:47 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
TO CANADIAN: I googled Canada, Mr. Canadian, and found you are fighting in Afghanistan, not Iraq. I also found your Liberals and NDP are accusing the Conservatives of being followers of Bush, thus according to these political parties, you do have Republicans running your government. :)

But don't worry - Bush's last breath as president is approaching and then we will be obligated to support some new harebrained leader, as all LDS must support whomever forms the gov't. It is our duty. I understand Alberta had a drunk for a prime minister and all the LDS there supported him. Good for you.

So what ocean does Alberta touch in your sea to shining sea anthem?
Steve - Re: Yeah Right | 1:42 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I'd say a great number of Catholics are innactive too, more so I bet than in the LDS Church. You're always hearing about Catholic members who basically only go for Easter and Christmas mass if even that.

I agree that the Pope showing up at the open house to tour the temple is quite unlikely, but just assume that it can't or won't happen.
To James | 3:14 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I mean no disrespect to you at all...I am married to a Catholic but he has not been active in Catholicism for over 25 years (he goes faithfully to Church with me, an active LDS, and has for 24 years) ...anyway, I am really curious. Why do you read Deseret News, which is an LDS newspaper??? I can only surmise there is something here that peaks your curiosity even if you won't admit it to yourself. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only true Church on the face of the earth and how grateful I am that I was converted at the age of 15.
To James | 3:16 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Actually, it would not matter to us if Catholics hung around on Temple Square. We are strong and secure in our testimonies and are not threated in the least by other religions...in fact, I think we would welcome it as it would give us a chance to talk to the Catholics about our faith. So no, it wouldn't be bothersome at all, though it would certainly be a waste of time...but it would be nice because more Catholic souls would most likely be converted to the fullness of the Gospel, which is what we have.
Yeah right | 3:31 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
And how many of the billion Catholics are inactive? I know of quite a few Catholics who converted to Mormonism and held high offices in the Church. My husband is an inactive Catholic-goes to Church with me every Sunday and I have faith that someday he will join. I'm just saying your statistics mean nothing.
To Steve | 3:32 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
The difference is, you can be a lapsed Catholic and they don't drop by unannounced and call and hound and love bomb you. :)

The new temple in Kansas City will be only 7 miles from my house. I am ecstatic!!! We are surely doing the happy dance here in Clay County!!! The temple will be built in a beautiful area of the city.

All that driving and driving to St Louis for those of us in the Liberty Stake, it has paid off in spades!

Woooo Hooo!
Jackie in Eastern Jackson County | 9:15 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I received a phone text message that the new temple in MO will be built at the Shoal Creek land development site owned by the church in Clay county, with a Kansas City address, in a residential area of that development project. Does anyone know the exact site? I'm thrilled!
KCMOTransplant | 9:58 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
The Liberty Stake has had some very extraordinary goals over the last few years. I don't know if they brought on the temple location or not, but I guess all the temple attendance despite the distance, VT, HT, Sacrament attendance and new baptisms were for a reason!!!

The Shoal Creek Valley is about 2 miles West of Liberty just off the 152. There is a huge golf course there and beautiful houses.
James | 2:34 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
To James, from what Mormons have said to me they don't like the groups that hang around evangelizing on Temple Square. I came here to read the article not because I am drawn to the Mormon religion. The true church is the Catholic Church. We were here for 1800 years before Smith came along. As St. Ignatius said in 107 AD, "where Jesus Christ is there is the Catholic Church."

I doubt the Pope will visit the temple. There is already a large mosque in the city. We will not welcome more missionaries bothering people in front of our churches. I have to say my encounters with Mormons have not been entirely positive that explains my antipathy.
James | 2:41 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
RE:James, there is nothing wrong with logic or reason. Depending on the "spirit" often ends up being mere subjectivism or relativism. We Catholics believe in reason informed by faith.

I have been accosted in front of our own churches by Mormon missionaries. They weren't there to enjoy the art or pray a rosary. They weren't there to dialogue about faith. They were there to convert our people as they left church. That may be perfectly legal, but it doesn't make for good relations.
Canadian LDS | 3:16 p.m. Oct. 8, 2008
To bush to the last breath. 86-90 Canadian soldiers have died in Iraq. As for the drunk leading Alberta...is it any worse than adulterers and lyers as Presidents? He did a good job as Premier. I don't live in Alberta. As far as sea to sea...look up Canada again and you will see that Alberta is not near an ocean but BC is...so the anthem is from sea to shining sea...west coast to east coast. Being accused of being a bush supporter is not the same as being one.
Steve - Re: James | 6:10 p.m. Oct. 9, 2008
Just because the Catholic church (or any other) has been around longer than the LDS Church doesn't mean it's the right one, better, the true church, etc.

We'll all find out in the end, when we die or when the 2nd Coming of Christ happens (whichever comes first) which church (if any) is the correct one (God's one true church).
Barry | 4:12 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008
I have friends that come from Philidelphia to work at the Washington,DC temple every Saturday. I know they are thrilled to get a temple in their home town.
Bush To the Last Breath | 12:52 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
To Canadian: You are correct. Some Canadians joined the U.S. army and died in Iraq under the U.S. flag. You are also correct that "adulterers and lyers" (sic) as Presidents who do a good job can be as bad as drunken premiers who do a good job.

You are quite right too that being accused of being a Bush supporter is not the same as being one. It was just probably the worst insult your desperate opposition parties could hurl at your government in an election. I understand Bush is not popular in Cananda.

As a union spokesman for the United Comedians of America, I believe that Bush has been a godsend to us for 8 yrs. If your funny Liberal leader gets elected, you too will reap a like blessing.

You are also correct that Alberta does not touch a shining sea and thus is rightfully skipped in your national anthem. I do not understand why your country would name a state B.C. though. Doesn't that mean Before Christ? Are they that backward on the west coast? Now I see why the Church chose Alberta over B.C. for Canada's latest temple, thanks to your comments. Stay true.

I live in Kansas and our closest temple is Omaha, Nebraska, a 3 1/3 hour drive one way. I was ecstatic to learn that a temple will be built in the greater Kansas City area. I can hardly wait!

Maybe NOW I will find my ancestry. I am so excited.

My plan is to go to Florence and to try to find my ancestry. My plan was to visit Rome, my goal of childhood. My interest is not really in the Roman/catholic architecture but my childhood was filled with visuals of the Pope, the Vatican, the Swiss guards etc. (formerly a catholic).

This is neat.
