Um people of Utah.....STOP BEING SO SELF!!!! It is time to people of the world besides your self have a temple in their back yard. So what you have to drive 10 min. to get to a temple....get over yourselves already....

I excited there will be a Temple built here in Calgary. My oldest will turn 12 around the time it will be completed, so thrilled we will go together soon.

This is wonderful news! The work is marching on and no one can stop it.
No, I'm pretty sure... | 2:16 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008

I'm pretty sure that the church doesn't own the temple lot in Independence. Must be somewhere else.

Hopefully, the cafeteria serves KC BBQ!

Thank you, Parker! You said just what I think: I wouldn't care in the least if some other religion wanted to do proxy work for me or my loved ones once we're dead. I've often thought how ironic it is that the non-LDS are so upset over something they claim not to believe in!

Also, it is always overlooked that LDS proxy work is only done to provide an OPPORTUNITY for those who've died--it does not mean anything more than that. We are not forcing anything on anyone who has died, contrary to how the non-LDS view it.

The fact that the Pope announced that Catholics should not cooperate with the LDS regarding genealogy...I guess that's modern-day revelation? It certainly is a new stance and one should expect there would be some reaction to it.

I certainly didn't mean anything hurtful towards Catholics in my prior comments (page 3) and I think "K" and others are being a bit too sensitive if they found my comments offensive. If anything, it's the LDS who should be offended by the Pope's announcement. But no. We'll just go on building temples and doing proxy work. Even in Rome, apparently.

OK, the work is pushing closer to the Asian masses. Over 2/3 of the world's people have never heard of the church. How will the Lord open up this area? This is one small step. Much work is left to do.
CCampbell | 5:19 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Again, the LDS Church DOES own sacred land in Independence. A 63 acre parcel was purchased by Bishop Partridge originally but abandoned when the Saints were forced to leave(see book Images of the New Jerusalem published by University of Tennessee Press). Gradually believers in the Temple of the New Jerusalem came back. First were the followers of Granville Headrick who bought a few lots of the original 63 acres and hold them to this day. The LDS Church owns about 20 acres of this original parcel.

But to think that the announcement of a temple in the "greater KC area" means New Jerusalem is a stretch for now, but it does show that the 20,000 or more members in the KC area are as worthy of a functioning temple as any other people.

There were several gasps from the 20,000+ crowd I sat with on Saturday morning as the temples were announced - each in their own importance yet singular in gratitude for the effort of those who have come before in those places. President Monson stopped and looked up smiling at the reaction to the Rome temple announcement. The hope is now in the full use of those buildings by those who live within their shadow. With their establishment comes immense accountability.

"OK, the work is pushing closer to the Asian masses. Over 2/3 of the world's people have never heard of the church. How will the Lord open up this area? This is one small step. Much work is left to do."

You are forgetting about Eastern Europe which was at one time under communist rule. Who would have ever thought there would be missionaries there now? I know today we are thinking that will never happen in China, but 20 years ago we were saying the same thing about the Soviet Union.
John Lambert | 5:34 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
To anonymous at 1:21,
Based on what President Monson said, the leaders of the church have a specific site in each of these locations worked out. They do not want another Hartford case where they could not find a suitable site.
We may have another Nashville case, since I do not know what the status of building permits are on these sites. For those who do not know, in Nashville the first site the church was going to build a temple on the city refused to grant a building permit so they later found a new site.
This leads me to believe the church has a specific site worked out in the Kansas City Area. What site it is I do not know, but I am sure it will be known soon enough.

As a member of the LDS church in good standing I would like to apologize to you. I think that the rude comments were just that - RUDE!

As for your comments on the genealogy. I would like to say that I for one would not object to being made a member of the Catholic church in this manner. I think that taking people names and giving then the OPPORTUNITY to become a member of the church is much more Christian then saying that all those who never heard of Christ will be dammed because they were not baptized. I think that the thing that you have to remember is that we are only giving them the opportunity - it is our belief that they will have the right to accept or reject this baptism. We are not forcing this to happen. At least we give them the opportunity to be baptized which gives me peace in knowing that my ancestors have that opportunity. Like I said - if your church started this - I would not have a problem with it.
James | 6:20 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
If you want to know about Catholic "fear" of Mormons you have only to consider that you attempt to convert our faithful. I have seen Mormon missionaries hanging around Italian cathedrals and churches. If we Catholics did that on Temple Square you would not be pleased. Also we are not happy that you use our records to "baptize" people without their or their families permission. We find it disrespectful. Christianity has existed in Rome since St. Peter. We don't need another group showing up saying that God abandoned his people for 1800 years until some prophet showed up. There is no need for a "restored" gospel. If you want the gospel you can find it in the Catholic Church. We have been preaching it for 2000 years.

I was very excited to hear about the new temples- especially the Kansas City Area Temple. I don't think it is "The Temple" that will usher in the second coming because that temple lot still belongs to another church. But knowing that the church is growing in that area is exciting and inspiring. How blessed we are that the Lord is continuing to build temples to bless members all over the world.

Simply the most irrelevent news I have ever read.
Another giant waste of tithing dollars once again.
bettyxstitch | 7:20 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I'm afraid I missed hearing the names of the last four temples announced. I was rejoicing rather loudly and jubiantly when the Calgary temple was named. (I was able to be so vocal because conference was broadcast on cable television here.) Many, many prayers of the Calgary saints have been answered.
KCMOTransplant | 7:54 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I really don't care where the Kansas City Temple is built.... My feet are still dancing the Happy dance! I promised I would go weekly if it was less than an hour drive.... I guess if It's just down the street, I might have to have a more frequent schedule! I'm soooooo excited.

The other think is that it will bring a lot of people to the gospel. Even if they don't care to learn or hear about Christ, maybe they will start asking questions. It's just too cool!
KCMOTransplant | 8:00 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Dennyg: Where would you rather see the tithing spent???

What is the mission of the Church??j Perfecting the Saints and Redeeming the Dead. I can't think of a better thing to spend tithing on.

BTW: Did you know the Nauvoo temple was built with ONLY DONATED MONEY???? One family in particular donated almost 80% of the money.
K | 8:07 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
I am glad that the mass/novena card wasn't offensive. We do pray for the dead for we consider those alive and dead brother's and sister's. A sacrament in the name of another is still a little more serious than praying for someone and the LDS church wasn't expected to and didn't help the person to give the mass card. But at any rate I understand a little more that the proxy baptism's in other's names aren't meant to be offensive and they don't interfer with the person's free agency. I thank you for explaining it.

Catholics are very much a sacramental people and even though it's not to meant to be offensive we'd just rather our Church not help fascilitate. I'm not upset at the practice for we don't think things work that way. I'm just trying to explain why the Catholic Church can't participate.

Given how completely apathetic Europe is spiritually, our Catholic numbers are also stagnating there, I am glad to see more buildings for religious practice being planned and built even if they aren't for my own church.

My family has found the LDS missionaries who knock on the door more respectful than the Johovah's. Thanks.
Steve | 8:12 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
On proxy baptisms, we need to be more sensitive to the feelings of others. Some are dismissing criticism with a wave of the hand, arguing that it is up to the deceased person to accept anyway. That is far too cavalier.

Feelings have been hurt by past practices. And, understandably.

Is it appropriate to take list of victims of a tragedy and submit their names for proxy baptism? No. Yet, that is what was happening to holocaust victims. Imagine if the names of soldiers killed in Iraq were being submitted or victims of the Indonesian tsunami or those killed at Columbine High School. Ugh.

Has the efforts to microfilm parish records been completely above-board? Probably not. I doubt a single priest or local leader every agreed that records could be compiled, included in the genealogical index, the parish provided a copy --- AND the records submitted for proxy baptism. Thus, it is reasonable for various churches to limit access to their records. We've behaved badly.

The future is likely to be public records and family members with ties to a member.

Is that so bad?

There will be plenty of time in the future to assist others.

What a thrill to hear the announcement of the temple in Rome! This is in direct fulfillment of promises made by President Snow, President Benson and President Hinkley. Thanks to the diligent service of missionaries and steadfastness of the Italian members the Lord is at long last able to bless them with a temple. My grandfather, President Ezra Taft Benson, rededicated Italy to missionary work in 1966. I served there in 1981, my brother in 1983. We currently have a daughter serving there. God bless Italy and the restored gospel as it rolls forward to fill the earth.
Re: James | 12:58 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Don't know if you still will read this...but I was one of those LDS missionaries hanging around Catholic churches in Italy. I did so (and still do 30 years later) because they are beautiful buildings, and represent love, faith and sacrifice (and awesome God-given skill and ability). I am not aware of any of my colleagues preaching to people there. I likewise welcome Catholic priests and nuns to our Temple Square and visitor's centers. I learned a great deal about your religion in these churches and would be pleased to tell you more about our beliefs.

Wouldn't the world be better if we shared our faith and worked together to make the world a better place? I would like to know what you have to add to my faith, would you be interested in knowing what I believe?

None of us should try to convince the other via logic. It is the Spirit that teaches and changes.

Calgary has 6 stakes and with a huge increase in population will have 8 or 9 within a few years. The economy is very strong there with no signs of slowing down because its an oil market. The membership is very strong there. We are thrilled for them. Calgary is a gorgeous place and it'll be even greater with a "House of the Lord" located there!!!! Wonderful!!!
Johnson County Kansas it is! | 3:40 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Our home teacher was on the team of land surveyors for the the Church and he said it was Johnson County, Kansas... as in Olathe, Kansas for those of you with realtor.com. NOT JACKSON COUNTY MISSOURI. It really makes sense... Applebee's and Sprint both have their headquarters in Johnson County, Kansas, it's s really nice, new place and property values are doing very well. We had been thinking of moving to Johnson county even before the rumors and now the announcement. The Church knows what it's doing when it builds its temples, doesn't build in declining neighborhoods. When it's officially announced, you remember you saw it first here.

KANSAS CITY MISSOURI | 3:52 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
HEY SALT LAKE, TRY READING A MAP SOMETIME. NOW KANSAS CITY, MISSORUI / KANSAS METRO AREA ABOUT 2.5 MILLION PEOPLE. THERE ARE SEVERAL SUBURBS AND INDEPENDENCE IS A SUBURB OF THAT CITY IT'S POPULATION IS ABOUT 150,000. IT'S TOO HARD TO TELL WHERE IN THE GREATER KANSAS CITY METRO THE TEMPLE WILL BE. HOWEVER MOST SAINTS EAST OF THE ROCKIES AND TO THE EAST COAST ARE LIGHTING UP THE PHONE LINES TODAY OF TALK OF THE NEW TEMPLE IN THE KANSAS CITY METRO AREA! YEAH ROME IS COOL, SEEING WHERE GOING TO BE DOWN FROM THE POPE'S BACK DOOR. BUT FOR THOSE WHO NEVER LEARNED HOW TO READ A MAP IN HIGH SCHOOL OR ARE JUST TO SCARED TO GET OUT SIDE OF YOUR STATE SHOULD GET IT THAT THIS MOVE TOWARDS KANSAS CITY IN WHICH JACKSON COUNTY IS MAINLY KANAS CITY MISSOURI SHOULD BE VIEWED AS SOMETHING VERY VERY LARGE. PEOPLE SAY IT'S NOT YET, WELL MAYBE NOT THE "BIG" TEMPLE

I was one of those "gasping" in awe during the announcment, but it was for PHILADELPHIA! I am assuming anyone with ties to a certain area, is more in awe when a Temple is announced for the area. We live north of Philadelphia, on the New Jesey border. We have a large area that our Stake encompasses, which includes a tiny section of NY and NJ. We've been traveling down to the Washington Temple since my husband and I were sealed in 1977. It is a beautiful Temple to be sure! Of course we all are going back and forth on where we think it might be built. Inner city? Surrounding area? Will it be like the one recently built in NYC or Palmyra? It certainly will be closer and for that we are forever grateful. Now we get to wait to hear where it will be built and then watch it being built.

Having a Temple in Rome is interesting. Mostly because of the History and the location as far as early Christianity is concerned.

I imagine that Rome, Religion wise is a mixed bag. You are not going to do a massive conversation of Catholics. Remember Italy is still Occupied by the U.S. as is Germany. The situation has a different dress on, but it is still the same.

In Sheridan Or. Our Ward 2nd Counselor and his Wife become Converts when he was Stationed in Italy, years before. That man really lived it. His Boys where all Eagle Scouts and his Daughters had their Young Womens awards and they all got as far away from it as they could as soon as they could. However that was/is far from his fault.

I sometimes look to him as an example of enduring to the end. His Wife and Him where blessed with a late life little girl who would now be almost 8. They would be in their Early 50's now.

That is just my one, of most likely many examples of good things happening in Italy. They where living off base and the Missionaries came knocking one day.
ECR | 5:13 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
OK all you Washington DC Temple patrons, with the announcement of the Philadelphia Temple we have just lost another chunk of our temple district which means you all need to step up your temple attendance at the DC Temple. It pains me when we have to cancel a session at the weeknight shift I work because no one it there to attend. This is a call to action!
Anonymous | 6:46 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Honestly, are we really sitting here questioning when the "gasp" was? We all need to be grateful that the work is moving forward in this way. In addition, remember that these are prophets who announced these things. Surely God knows where to place His temples, and when to place them.

Mamma Mia! We Have Prayed & Planned for this day for 20 years. It Is Really happening, Were going to have a temple in Italy!!!! Che grande gioia, che lacrime di allegreza.

IF ANYTHING PROVES THAT WE HAVE LIVING PROPHETS, THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ROME TEMPLE AT THIS TIME AFTER PRES.HINCKLEYS STATEMENT SEVERAL YEARS AGO THAT ONE WOULD BE BUILT IF THE ITALIAN MEMBERS WERE FAITHFUL.THIS IS SURELY IT.
IT MUST ALSO BE A TIME FOR GREATER UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE VARIOUS DENOMINATIONS OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH SO THAT THE LDS CHURCH MAY BE BETTER UNDERSTOOD THEREBY ADVANCING THE WORLDWIDE SCOPE OF ITS WORK UPON THE EARTH.
MAY THE LORD BLESS ALL THOSE IN THE WORLD WHO ARE SICK OR IN SOME WAY AFFLICTED AT THIS TIME.
Parker | 7:50 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Just one more comment. I am as excited as anyone about the temples that have just been announced, and have enjoyed reading the enthusiastic comments on this thread. We need to be aware that our enthusiasm is sometimes seen by outsiders as boasting, and I am reminded of Ammon's "boasting" in Alma 26, and Aaron's "rebuking" him.

I'm not suggesting we tone down our enthusiasm, but just be aware and not act surprised when others are offended by it. We may on occasion need to apologize and explain our enthusiasm.
Wow | 8:34 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I am excited. I was in the Catania Italy Mission just over a year ago. If anyone deserves a temple, it is the Italians. In southern Italy, some of the poorest families made a week-long trek to Switzerland just to see the temple. Not only the Italians, but many many Africans. I am so excited. As for those wondering why the Catholic church could stop it, the reason is that they have a lot of pull in the government. They don't own the Government, but the Catholic church is what is dear to most of the voters, so they have a big say in what goes on. As for those that are angry over the tithing money used for this, please post elsewhere. This is a good news post and as such it deserves good news posts. I think the prophet knows what he is doing. It is by listening to the prophet that the church has come this far.
Forza Italia.

What a glorious week-end. This announcement has been long awaited. The blessings of a temple in this land will extend to many, including of course, those beyond the veil. Having served in Milan 77-79 and of Italian descent I am thrilled and the tears have not stopped since Saturday morning!!! Simply an answer to heartfelt desire and prayer.

Everyone on this comment board should be pleased with the annoncement of these new temples. Better to have churches built anywhere rather than bars and strip joints. I wouldn't mind having a church on every corner. Remember, there are many religions represented in Italy just as our United States has many religions. No one should feel they are perfect in themselves. There is only 1 who is perfect.
John Pack Lambert | 11:15 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
To the 12:11 commentator,
I do have to agree with you that most of the gripers seem to live within an hour of one or more temples.
However, I also have strong doubts that some of these gripers even show up to church, let alone going to the temple, so it would not really effect them if they did not have a close temple.
The comment that Kansas City was the largest area in the US not within an hour of a temple is incorrect. That distiction is held by Philadelphia. Pittsburg may now hold that distction after all currently anounced temples are built. Other candidates are Independence.
Buffalo, Cleveland and Cincinnatti also may be contenders, although they are all fairly close to temples. Other populated areas in the US far from temples are McAllen Texas, Springfield, Missouri and Jacksonville, Florida.
Actually, Miami is another well populated area far from a temple. I do not know the travel time to the Orlando, Temple, but I imagine it is over an hour from the city of Miami.
Then there are areas of Brazil that are still many hours from temples, and then there is Kenya where you cross several countries.
Rome Temple news | 12:09 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I just found this site. Looks like there's nothing there yet, but it will be a place to keep bookmarked for news on the groundbreaking, construction, and dedication of the temple. Cool. rometemple.info.
KC North | 12:27 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
The greater Kansas City metro area is huge. As President Monson indicated, the land for the announced temples has already been aquired. That quickly rules out the temple site in Independence. I am very confident it will not be constructed in Methependence. However, anyone who was in the St. Louis Temple dedication service for the Liberty, Missouri Stake might remember what President Hinkley told us. In short, he stated that the temple should rightfully be in the Liberty Missouri Stake, except for the panic that would cause and the multitudes that would flock to our area... Liberty Jail, Richmond, Far West and Adam-Ondi-Ahman are all in the Liberty Stake, as are vast areas of empty land owned by the church. The church is growing like a wildfire around Far West and Adam-Ondi-Ahman, with expectation that the stake will be split in that area very soon - especially with the size of the newly constructed Gallitan building and number of times area wards have been split lately. No matter where it is built, we are so very blessed to have a temple coming to our area soon. We truely do "Thank Thee O God for a Prophet!"
Anonymous | 12:59 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I'm not understanding how the Roman Temple would be evidence of prophecy. Because a goal was put forth for a Roman Temple a few years ago, and that goal is being met? Really...I pray to the one true; triune God that the LDS church will finally see the error of their so called "prophet," err huckster, Joseph Smith.
Bill | 1:05 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
The other thing to consider is that the announcement came with the stipulation that the Church already owns the property. There is land in both Liberty, Johnson, Jackson, Wyandotte as well as at Far West that the Church owns. Where this Temple goes will be selected by the Lord. If in Independence it will probably be close to the visitor center but I doubt Independence because the actual THE TEMPLE site is only a meer few blocks away.

Let us rejoice that the Temple is coming to the area where the greatest persecution of the Church was and a blessing to all the faithful members who have seen this area grow.

Anonymous | 1:38 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
The Church continues to build more and more temples, and continues to "raise the bar" so that more and more people are kept OUT of them!

Make sense?
Ron Hyatt | 1:45 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
As a former missionary in the Philadelphia Mission from 1987-88 I am overwhelmed with the announcement of the temple. This will be a great blessing to those members in that area and a great missionary tool as well
Norfolk area | 2:04 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I am going to humbly pray for a Temple in the Norfolk area, some of our people must drive 5 hours to the DC temple. I am thrilled for those who got the great news. Hearing how some prayed for guidance on a Temple teaches me I must do the same.
Re: Brother of Mahonri | 3:23 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
When I was in Rome in 1983, Rome had two or three branches of a few hundred people each. It has grown a lot in the last twenty-five years, so I'm sure there are plenty of people with temple recommends right in Rome itself, not to mention the rest of the Italian peninsula and nearby nations.
Steve - The Rome Temple | 3:56 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I've been to Rome once (in 2006), there is literally graffiti sprayed everywhere (it is on almost every wall except the walls of the Vatican it seems)... leaves you with quite a dirty impression of the city. Hopefully the vandals leave the walls of the temple grounds alone like they do for the Vatican.

Also, I wonder how many Catholic Bishops and Cardinals will attend the Rome Temple open house? Or if the Pope himself will actually attend? That would be soooo great!!

I'm sure the LDS Church is making one of their mini-documentary programs about the Italian LDS members and the progress of the temple, including the open house and dedication ceremonies, to be shown in between sessions of General Conference that year the temple is finished. This will be an interesting one to watch.
English LDS loves Italy | 3:59 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Fantastic news, a Temple in Rome! The Italian Saints are a really Christlike, kind and loving people. The Church moves forward another step in this beautiful country.
I know many more blessings will follow.
Papalou | 4:58 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I know of a couple that served in the Swiss Temple. They always looked forward to the Saints from Italy coming up during their week at the temple. They spoke of their incredible dedication to temple work and the great feste that always followed at the end of the day. The true Italian spirit! I served in the Catania Mission from 77-79 and shouted Halleluhah when the Prophet made the announcement. Auguri Santi degli Ultimi Giorni d'Italia! I'm saving to attend the dedication.
Former Rome Elder | 5:09 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
In the last 10 years the Lord has been placing temples in places that the saints have been driven out of, or that were pivotal areas in the church's history, even if the need in some cases was sufficient but not overwhelmingly apparent: Nauvoo, Winter Quarters, Palmyra, and now the Kansas City area and Rome. Let us remember that the church lost a crucial apostle, and its first prophet in Rome to martyrdome. I am reminded of Pres. Hinkley's talk at the Nauvoo temple dedication in which he reminded us all that the Lord's work cannot be stopped, and those who oppose it perish at their own expense while the church continues to grow.

The saints in Italy have earned a temple if ever a people has. While most Italians spend their August lounging around on the beach, I know many an Italian saint who uses that vacation at the temple doing 4 sessions a day, one after the other, for weeks at a time. Now I think we should all pray that the Lord's temples will continue to dot the earth, and that every area open to the work will soon necessitate its own.
