Why??? | 10:25 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Must every close game involving a PAC 10 officiating crew end with a controversial call by the officials?

Yah Oregon State had more Touchdowns but the Coaching Staff kept going for 2 in which the Utah D held them twice. Could a Shoulda Woulda right. Is the pot black or is it Blue through the blue tinted glasses. Get a Life Zoobies This is a Utah article. Stay off....
Vegas Ute | 10:26 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I'll take that bet. Utes are in serious danger of falling in the polls after last night's performance, depending on how other teams behind them do this weekend. Don't be counting your BCS eggs just yet!

Just a reminder to BYU fans who are making fun of the Ute fans for storming the field after winning a game against a second tier PAC-10 school, that is exactly what you did in Las Vegas against UCLA. As far as the PI is concerned, I believe the "uncatchable ball" rule is only in the NFL. In college football, it doesn't matter whether the ball was catchable or not.
re: Nonzoobie | 10:30 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
we had to put up with the dumbarse yewt comments earlier in the week.
Mr Wonderful | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Why all the fuss about the Utah fans rushing the field to celebrate a win? Does anyone recall a few years back in Provo when a Y fan rushed the field and tackled a U cheerleader? The Y fan got his face pummelled. Now that was sweet!
re: WhoAmISir | 10:34 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
How can you say Ludwig was not the problem? 2/3 yards on first down deep ball for an incompletion on second down unmanagable 3rd down. Norm Chow alwas attributes QB play to wether or not he put the QB in the right position. Ludwig is not! If he would establish the run game with his two bruisers and then throw play action, Johnson would have recievers open all day.
Raise Your Hand! | 10:38 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Raise your hand if you are sick of BYU fans!

Reading these message boards helps me remind myself why I dislike Brigham Young University so much. It's not the honor code, the coaching satff, the players or even the skinny white kids on campus with the popped up collars, but it's the fans. I realize that every team has it's arrogant fans, but is it just me or do those fans grow in bigger numbers down south?

I could go on and on about the various posts and the arrogant comments on these boards, but that will just generate more ridiculous comments from those beloved fans down south.

Love for Kruger | 10:39 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Biggest play in the game: Kruger sacks Moevao, causes fumble, OSU misses field goal. Fantastic!

Ute coaching staff: A+. Spectacular play calling. Terrific two-minute execution. Incredible time management.

OSU coaching staff: F. Lost the game for their team with incredibly bad tactics. What were they thinking? Run the ball!

Ute Special Teams: A+

OSU Special teams: F. Kick the ball straight and up in the air.

Bad News: Penn State 45 Oregon State 17.

a team who plays weber state and utah state in the same year should never make fun of BYU's schedule.
Bill Simmons | 10:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You stormed the field after beating a team not even ranked in the top 25? That's a disgrace to football fans everywhere.
re rush the field | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
ok ok let me take you back....the 2007 pioneer las vegas bowl? byu vs a 6-6 ucla team. no coach. no qb. and wait. i believe byu had already lost to ucla earlier that year? the score is 16-17 with ucla lining up for the game winning field goal as time expires. the kick is snapped. the kick is blocked. byu fans rush the field. why would you rush the field against a team you are favored to win and who isnt really that good? just sounds a little hypocritical to me. ute fans shouldnt be getting such a hard time.
Texas UTE | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
For all the armchair quarterbacks who want to discount this OSU team as weak...They beat the #1 ranked team in the country last week and have a whole week to prepare for this game. This was a very good OSU team and for anyone to say to the contrary obviously did not watch the same game I did. The Utes (Ludwig) needs to work on the play calling, i.e. not waiting until the last 120 seconds to start calling plays 20-30 yards downfield. Defense is solid. Jaquiz Rogers will make most defenses miss and will break off a couple of long runs a game. Overall I am pleased with the win, but not content. The Utes will get better and it is sure nice to lay claim to the FIRST team in the country as Bowl Eligible... GO UTES!!!
BYU | 10:47 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU is going to roll and smoke this team of Utes if they dont get it together.
BYU rushed field | 10:49 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
All you BYU fans how do you feel about rushing the field last year in the Las Vegas bowl after beating a 6-7 UCLA team......YOU HAVE NO ROOM TO TALK COUGAR FANS ABOUT RUSHING THE FIELD.
drew | 10:50 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Well thanks to the refs bailing out the yewts on the 2 pt conversion we don't have to listen to how the refs bailed out Washington on the celebration penalty.
Nervous Kittens | 10:51 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Props to BYU fans that can give respect when deserved.

But some of you Kittens sound nervous. Unless you really have nothing other to do then degrade a Utah win on a Utah article. If that's the case, Luke Staley could probably get you a job selling cell phones at the mall.
SCAT | 10:52 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
If it wasnt for Sakoda kicking the last second field goal, Utah would only win half of their games. It seems like Sakoda always scores tons of their points cause they cant seem to get into the end zone! PATHETIC
Remember | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Vegas Ute, the computer polls won't help Utah when they lose to BYU on November 22nd.

BYU appreciates Utah's stellar SOS. Keep up the good work, because, in the end, it will help boost BYU's SOS.
James K. | 11:01 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Even if the Utes don't get the two-point conversion they still win by one point, so the call on the conversion is moot.

Utes are 6-0, but lets see if they have what it takes to go thru the MWC schedule. TCU, BYU and New Mexico will be tough games.

Go Utes!!!
Good win for MWC | 11:02 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Nice win Utes - I hope you and BYU go undefeated until Nov. 2 points:
1) the hateful comments, from both sides, must be from those under 18 who still live in a black/white world, and find out who they are by judging others harshly. Grow up and support our state and conference by cheering for both teams.
2) Sakoda said he watched the flags and saw the wind had stopped before his kick and said it was perhaps "divine intervention". Virtually every human in the world believes in a God, and wishes to attribute good things to Him. Don't dump BYU for being a religious school, and don't dump Utes as being non-religious. Players on every college and NFL team pray on the sideline while their kicker tries for the win - and Sakoda even gives credit to Him. Let's not blow this out of proportion in the likes of Austin Collie's comments last year. Keep religion in our hearts, where it belongs, keep the trash out, and leave it all on the field.
Go MWC! And sue the BCS for discrimination.
U student | 11:02 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
All I have to say about BYU and Utah meeting on Nov 22 is Utah will be three times more prepared for BYU because we play actual teams and win! If BYU fans want to keep hanging their hat on their one point win against Washington, go ahead.. the laughs will continue to ring out from U fans everywhere whenever we hear it! Can't wait to hear you talk up Utah State after tonight! Go Utah!
Coach A dont leave | 11:08 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
great win Utes, Coach A is one of the top DC in the country and Ute fans should be affriad od losing him to a top Head coaching job, great job preparing great win Utes, Coach A please dont leave us.
Crew | 11:10 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The officiating crew was a hybrid of MWC and WAC officials. That was the word of the OSU sideline reporter, who spoke with one of them before the game (I love XM radio!).
RE: Ranked | 11:13 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Are you kidding me. The Coug players stormed the field against Washington when they won. The only difference is that they didn't have the fans there to join them. You guys down there are so stupid its scary.
LB | 11:16 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
"Awesome game?" my foot. Utah was lucky to say the least. Johnson was pathetic most of the game. The first play of the last drive he threw a bonehead pass that could very well have been picked off for a touchdown by the defender if he'd been a half a yard closer to the intended receiver. The interference in the end zone on the 2-pt conversion attempt may or may not have been actual interference but the more important point is that the ball was thrown out of the receiver's reach. Even if the defender hadn't interfered there would have been no chance for him to catch the ball because the defender was between the receiver and the ball. Had the defender not interfered the receiver would have interfered with the defender to try to get it. It was poorly thrown, a lousy pass pure and simple. And when Johnson on the next play hesitated instead of moving his butt across the goal line, I thought he was going to get nailed but the defenders were just too far away. Johnson played like a fawn with his eyes in the headlights of an oncoming semi! Lucky, doggone lucky!
Dr Utah | 11:18 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
A great win. I am still very worried about our QUARTERBACK who continues to give the opposing team 14 points per game. For a 5th year senior he does not make good decisions in throwing the ball away to avoid sacks and he leads the NCAA in fumbles lost. The coaching staff needs to either get this fixed or replace him...I have no doubt he will cost us the BYU game if things do not change.
UTAH MAN | 11:19 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
what is with all u byu fans? now that byu is actually winning u all come out of the closet and are "true blue byu" comment about your own team and leave us alone. cant u just accept the fact that we beat a dang good team last night? brian johnson looked terrible in the third quarter but he came back and won it for us and thats a great attribute for a great quarterback. and the utes never gave up!! even after all our own fair weather fans left when utah was only down by 8. come on utah fans stay and support your team!! great effort by a team with heart and great win for the utes against a great oregon st. team!!

"Uncatchable" is an NFL rule | 11:26 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
That's an NFL rull, folks. In college, high school, pee wees it doesn't matter if the ball is behind, in front, or over his head, you can't hit the receiver while the ball is in the air.
Gotta love Y fans | 11:27 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Who have nothing better to do that to run down a nice win by the Utes. Justify the win however you want, but Utah has even more national cred after this win. OSU is a good team. No question about it. They have some athletes. Anyone who watched the USC game knows that the win wasn't a fluke. OSU was the better team that night.

Great win by the UTES!! We'll settle this November 22nd. Until then, good luck to BYU.
Agree with LB | 11:29 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Coach Kyle says: "The resiliency and the ability to handle adversity was tremendous. Our backs were against the wall and we fought through it." That's certainly a rosy, self-serving spin on near fatal fiasco. The defense was decent to good but the offense stunk to high heaven. The play-calling was terrible. Johnson looked like a scared Easter Bunny. He hesitated ALMOST TOO LONG to cross the end zone to win the game. Like LB said, "Lucky, doggone lucky!" That certainly was a poor example of a potential BCS-busting team!
RES Rules | 11:32 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Rushing the field/court when your team is on TV and you win a close/exciting game at the last second is the new in-thing for college kids. Y fans, you can't say you wouldn't do the same thing. At least they didn't try to tear the goal posts down. Speaking of which, did anybody notice the circle of security surrounding OSU's goal posts after they defeated USC? Like guarding Fort Knox!

like the better team. But there is something to be said for a team that can beat them even though their own QB didn't show up until the 4th quarter.
Since when | 11:35 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
is almost losing to Washington the same as almost losing to Oregon St? How many teams has Washington beat again? No, really. I want to know.

yewtes beat the trojans and rush the field, wait, oh, it was just the beavers. woops
Boo | 11:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I see a lot of Ute fans working overtime here to justify their fans rushing the field, their team's poor play, etc. etc. etc. but I have yet to see one justification for booing the team in the 3rd quarter. What's up with that??
Grow up | 11:43 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I've had enough of this rubbish. So yeah, the fans rushed the field- get over it! Yeah OSU is now 2-3, but last week they knocked off #1. Getting the job done on the follow-up week to that makes it a big win. All controversy aside, you'd have to be ignorant if you don't admit that this win is bigger then the BYU-Washington squeaker.

Utah didn't play their "A" game, but they still pulled out a win. 6-0 = bowl elegible. We can do more- there's lots of work to be done.

Ha ha | 11:47 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
All this smack from BYU fans... who have you beaten again.
Oh thats right you went to the big house and beat Michigan... oh wait
Oh, you beat a team that just a week ago beat the NUMBER 1 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY... oh wait
You went to a horrible Washington and won the game because a guy got excited after scoring a touchdown that would set up an overtime... BINGO
When Nov. 22nd rolls around, BYU will have 2 L's (you do realize you have to go to Air Force and TCU right...)
details | 11:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
#1: the penalty doesn't matter because the field goal still would have given the Utes a 1 point victory
#2: storming the field is perfectly acceptable after a dramatic win like that against any team (same for BYU in Vegas)
#3: go Utes, go BYU, I look forward to a top 5 matchup on 11/22.
Self Righteous Arrogance | 11:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I am having a hard time understanding where all these BwhineU fans are coming from. Let me try and get it straight. Its fine when BwhineU fans rush the field twice last year. Once against an unranked Utah team and once against a 5th place, .500 UCLA team. When Utah rushes the field last night its some huge atrocity and embarrassment. Does anyone else find this somewhat hypocritical? Self righteous, arrogant BwhineU fans need to get off need to get off their high horse and quit nitpicking Utah fans for the same thing they are guilty of themselves.

I was interested to see what other media outlets and fans had to say about the PI call. I logged onto the Oregonians {the main newspaper for the state of Oregon) website and espn.com and was shocked to see little if any complaints about the call. Ted Miller of espn.com had this to say after an entirely reasonable pass inference penalty gave them a second chance on a 2-point conversion, they tied the game at 28-28". Pretty much the only people in the country that have a problem with the PI call are all the self righteous, arrogant BwhineU fans.

Ute Boneheads | 11:50 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Some of you need some good mental help.... even better would be to institutionalize most of you. Especially some of you UTAH, UTE boneheads. Some of you are of the most inconsiderate people on the face of this planet. I'm happy you lost...heee heee heeeeee!
Hmmm... | 11:51 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Looking ahead to November 22:

BYU fans should be excited to see the 300+ yards passing that Oregon State racked up, as well as Brian Johnson's turnovers.

BYU fans should be a little nervous about Utah's two game-tying and game-winning drives at the end of the game. You have to think that a close game favors the Utes.

Great game by the U -- a big win for the MWC.
Re: SCAT | 11:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
So what's your point? You mock Utah for recruiting a player who can win games for them? Isn't that what they're supposed to do?

Who cares if its a kicker, QB, WR, RB, etc., as a coach you have to find guys who will help your team win. To mock a team or coaching staff for doing that is just stupidity.
Utah resident | 11:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I'm a recent Utah move in - unattached to a school. Utah may have ended up on top the scoreboard but only because OSU lost it thanks to poor coaching and the out-of-postion referee. When both players are running in the same direction and the one in front suddenly stops to go back the other direction, that's his bad not the defender's - he'd never caught the ball anyhow unless he has 10-foot long arms attached to his back. What a pathetic effort in the last two minutes for OSU. The defense basically stood there and let the ineffective Utah quarterback finally complete some passes. Don't know what all the hoopla is about the Utah team - they looked very weak on both sides of the ball. If this game was in Oregon it would've been a totally different result just as it was for USC.

The BYU Utah game in November won't be much of a contest unless Utah gets a new quarterback and learns to hang onto the ball. Hope they can fix it.
Re: SCAT | 11:54 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Yeah and when Utah scores more points than the other team they win. How pathetic.
SOS Reference Guide | 11:55 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Strength of Schedule for Dummies

BYU vs Utah
AFA = AFA
CSU = CSU
NM = NM
SDSU = SDSU
TCU = TCU
UNLV = UNLV
Wyo = Wyo
USU = USU
UW WSU

Except for their head-to-head matchup, which will decide whether BYU or Utah is ranked higher in the computer rankings anyway (win/losses are part of the calculation), Utah's SOS vs BYU's SOS will basically be decided by how UCLA and OSU finish out the season.

Regardless, the SOS for both teams will be almost the same when they play November 22nd. If Utah's SOS is higher than BYU's SOS at that point, BYU will actually get a boost in SOS and Utah will drop slightly in SOS from playing each other.

The only teams used in the SOS calculation are the teams that each team has already played. SOS DOES NOT include future opponents. And currently, the computers include preseason rankings, which will be dropped before the first official computer poll results are calculated.
