When are we going to come into a game we're supposed to win and simply dominate? Great win, great heart, yes...how about just coming in and beating a team you're supposed to beat by playing 4 straight quarters of solid football. Y is going to kick our ass if we show up in Nov playing like we have so far. Still 6-0 is great; high expectations...
True Red! | 8:39 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The 2 point conversion DID MATTER!!! The TD made the score 26-28 so they needed it to TIE!. They made that and then the defense stopped OSU so they had to punt. We moved into field goal range and ran the clock down to 2 seconds and King Louie made a field goal to win by 3. Get your facts straight, posters. It was an emotional comeback and the fans had every right to storm the field! If you weren't there, you had no idea of the emotion in that stadium.

Thank you. You personified - perfectly - a typical BYU fan. Questioning Utah's win against a decent opponent - without knowing anything about the opponent. Utah played Oregon STATE last night - not Oregon.
So, while BYU boasts a winning record against teams with a GRAND total of 2 D-1 wins combined (yes, five weeks into the season), Utah has beaten opponents who have beaten the likes of USC, Wisconsin, Iowa State, ASU, etc., etc.
WHat's better - Utah became the first team in the NCAA this season to become bowl eligible. They also are recognized as the official BCS buster (having won more games against BCS teams since 2000).
So keep relishing in your domination over teams like Wyoming and 1-win UCLA. But come November, we'll have a real show down with real bragging rights.

I agree with the Ute fans that are calling some Cougar fans out for rushing the field.

So, let me say this clearly -- ANY fan that rushes the field is a fool. If you have a ticket and a seat, guess what, you are a fan. Unless you're wearing a uniform and pads, stay off the field.

The problem is that Ute fans tend to rush the field in big numbers over every minor victory. You guys are like the Spinal Tap version of knowledgeable football fans. It's embarrassing.

You beat a team that is now 2-3 and you rushed the field??? Are you kidding me???

Listen up, Ute honks -- Oregon State beat USC ... not you. You beat a team that is now 2-3 and horrible on the road. So don't act like you beat USC.
Darrell | 8:44 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
It is utterly ridiculous to call the pass-interference call a "bail out" or somehow incorrect. That was text book pass interference -- a defender preventing the receiver from getting to the ball with his body. Only zoobs with extremely blue-tinted glasses will reach that conclusion in an effort to make themselves feel better about their own incredible luck during their recent win streak.
I'm in the game | 8:44 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Can I rush the Deseret News newsroom after a mediocre message board post?
Tommyk | 8:46 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
whatever if people think we got baill out by the ref? we still stop them to get the ball back and kick a winning field goal? so keep up the exscuses you poor loser!!!!!
TheHailstorm | 8:49 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I wish the commentators here would see the big picture and quit nit picking. Utah's win was good for all the teams in the MWC and especially they. BYU was mentioned many times on the nationally broadcasted game. I have only one wish. Can we hire Sakoda as our kicking coach ?
Flames6 | 8:50 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Great win. Love the blue haters too. Y fans can twist any situation. BYU wins in that fashion and its a miracle they prayed for ala Austin Collie's remarks last year. As for how many idiots can you fit on a field ? I believe RES holds 20,000 more and I've witnessed storming the field there after beating some REAL notables. Stay classy Utes and let the haters hate.
jephri | 8:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I am a BYU Student and an ardent fan. But last night I may has well have been a Ute! I have never cheered for the boys in red before. Hope you all climb in the rankings this week to 12 or 13. I still think BYU's offensive execution is sharper, and our defense is more reliable but with the Ute's having the home field advantage, anything can happen in the final game of the season. Let's hope we are both undefeated until then!
Whatever BYWho | 8:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Just like you homers saying that your precious Cougs would have blocked UW's extra point without the celebration penalty, Utah would have still won 29-28 without the pass interference call on the two-point conversion. It doesn't change a thing, they still would have stopped OSU and Louie would have still kicked the game winner! So say what you want about that call but it doesn't change the fact that the Utes would have won either way! Quit being jealous that the Utes have actually beaten better teams than your precious Cougs...BYWho!!
I just hate BYU | 8:58 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I mean I just hate them, with a passion. I hate that you have to walk perfectly on the concrete sidewalks, and that sideburns can only be so long. I hate the "Go...lame cougars..." thing they play. I hate that awkward tan shading on their jerseys. I hate the lemonade parties with broken bits of pretzels on the floor pre and post game. I hate sitting around talking about Bronco's weird name. I hate the way the Y on the mountain side seems to stare at me like I am guilty of something (maybe I am...) I hate that everyone on their team is 26 years old and very "studious in the game." I am just kidding...go Utes. I am not crazy.
BYU FAN | 8:59 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
That was a great win for the UTES! Love to see the U win these games. To have both teams undefeated at the end of the season will be great for MWC.
Cougar Fan | 9:03 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Well done, Utes. Those were some gutsy plays down the stretch to pull it off. Every team is going to have some rough drives/quarters/games. The mark of a great team is being able to pull it all together when the stakes are highest.

I think this game should also be fodder for discussion about the use/abuse of the PAT chart. The OSU coalition has to be irate about the fact that the Beavers only had 18 points to show for their first three touchdowns.
Ute Fans Don't Get It | 9:03 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
All of these comments from BYU fans...

Just the comments Ute Trolls post after every BYU Game.

Rush the field, bad call that gave the game away, lucky, win against a poor team, etc...

I even saw the Ute return man (#12) cross himself and point to the sky before a kickoff. Is that self righteous? Do you think God wants Utah to win more than OSU?

Don't dish it out if you can't take it.

If you want respect, show some respect when you earn it.

It's that simple.

Rushing the Field | 9:03 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I was truly embarrassed to see Ute fans rush the field last night. I understand that it was an emotional win but there should've been nothing more than a collective sigh of relief from the fans in the stands, not pandemonium that leads you to believe you just beat the #1 team in the nation. The Utes were 11 point favorites, for crying out loud!

Utah was very fortunate to get that PI. Whether it really was or wasn't pass interference, no way that ball was catchable. I'm not saying that it should not have been called but if the play was defended cleanly, Utes lose the game, plain and simple. Because then with a 2 point lead, OSU sits on the ball and runs out the clock.
F Zoobies | 9:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I love it. The typical zoobies are writting in with there stupid comments. OSU was legit. And for anyone trying to compare them to a week team like Washington here's a fact. BYU's strength of schedule is ranked 115th. Sleep on that
Anonymous | 9:11 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I absolutely hate Utah's team, coaches, etc., that being said, good win. I can't wait to rush the field after the Cougars beat the Aggies tonight.
Ranked 15th??? | 9:18 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You are ranked 15th in the nation playing at home at RES, favored by 10 1/2, needing a gift from the MWC officals and then you storm the field. Priceless!!!
BYUCanuck | 9:19 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
1) The 2-pointer was not a game breaker. If the ref had not called the pass interference, Utah would still have won by 1 point.

2) This is a legit win. Sure there were mistakes. But takes a winning attitude to be a winner week after week. When it comes to determining the outcome, you have to give props to a team that knows how to play to the last second.

3) This game shows that if BYU can't get a comfortable lead on the Utes in November, they are going to be in for one bumpy ride in the fourth quarter of the Holy War.

My hat is off to Utah for continuing to strive right to the end. I admire their belief and commitment.

Good win Utah!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't play your best game and beat a team USC couldn't beat. We have alot of room for improvement... just keep winning. I love that our fans have passion and stormed the field. Great comback deserves celebration. We just beat the best team we are going to play until our bowl game!!!!!!!!!!
Stoopied Yewt Fan | 9:27 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
So, if Oregon St. beat #1 ranked USC, and the yewts beat Oregon St. that must mean that the yewts are better than USC and should be in the top ten.

sounds like sold yewt logic to me.
No "A" Game | 9:28 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Six games into the season and Utah fans are waiting for Utah to play a "complete" game. Still waiting to see the offense's "A" game.

Maybe it's time to just accept that this is it. Utah's offense doesn't have an "A". What we've seen so far at Michigan, at Air Force, vs Oregon State IS Utah's "A" game.

Johnson has shown flashes of brilliance, first half of the Michigan game, final drive of the Air Force game, last two minutes of the Oregon State game, but, he's mixed that brilliance with lots of mediocrity and just plain horrible play.

Brian has thrown an interception every game this season, and he hasn't thrown that many TDs.

If not for Utah's great defense and All-American Sakoda scoring 2 to 3 field goals a game, Utah would be 3-3 this season. Utah's offense is producing just barely enough for Utah to win games.
Salt Lake Cougar | 9:32 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Give credit where credit is due. Utah had a tough opponent last night in Oregon State. A close game doesn't necessarily mean that Utah played poorly. It doesn't mean that Brian Johnson necessarily had a terrible game. Oregon State played them tough and in the end the better team was able to win a close game. I don't think it was a fluke that they beat USC last week. They are a good team and if they can catch a team with their guard down, we see what can happen. Good win for the Utes. Look forward to an awesome game in November. I don't think that the fans rushed the field because they felt it was an upset. It was just a very exciting finish to a great game. I didn't know winning the National Championship was the only grounds for rushing the field...
Poor Utes | 9:35 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I don't like getting in these arguments but a few points to make. First, Utah looked AWFUL in the second half and really didnt deserve to win the game. If Washington had a kicker they would have not missed the extra points and had a couple more field goals too. Second, it was a great drive Utah made with there backs against the wall to win regardless of the situation that was impressive. And third, how embarrassing to rush the field like you beat someone, it really made you look like idiots being the ranked team and beating a 2-3 team and rushing the field. Anyways good to know the Utes struggle, go COUGS!!
Nonzoobie | 9:38 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
It looks like BYU must have the day off from school today. The Zoobies are out in force with moronic comments.
Truely Honored | 9:41 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The fact there are both many positive and negative comments from people other than Utah fans is fantastic.

Who is 6-0?
Who is the first bowl eligible team this year?

Every day is a great day to be a Ute fan, but some how today is even sweeter!

Will we run the table? Who knows...TCU and BYU are quality opponents. I can't wait to see the games.

May the MWC continue to dominate the PAC-10 (6-1).
May BYU continue to rack up wins.
May Nov. 22 prove to be a battle of unbeatens.

Go Utes!!!
Russ | 9:46 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Facts are facts. Even if we didn't make the 2-point conversion we still got the ball back and won the game. Keep doing the math haters!!

Utah 50

The march to greatness continues....
asdf | 9:47 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
even if they didn't get the extra points after the touchdown, they proved that they could stop the beavers and get a field goal after, which would have won it too.
Vegas Ute | 9:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Remember Kitten fans 1/3 of the BCS rankings are the nasty computers. And right now the you are sucking wind.

Remember, its not how bad you beat St. Mary's of the Wasatch, it's can St. Mary's beat anybody else.

My guess is that when the BCS rankings come out Utah will pass you like UTA bus.

Keep piling on the weak and pumping your chest.
The fall will be fun to watch.

Fickle Fans | 9:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
To the average person watching on T.V we saw fans boo their offense off the field and then 4 minutes later carry them off......WOW! I like the football program and can't stand the fans...if you want to call them that.
The Facts | 9:49 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I notice a lot of Utes are expending a lot of energy here trying to prove that last night's win was a good one. By stating "OSU is a good team" they feel better about their team (Utes were saying the same thing last week about their lackluster win over Weber State). I agree, a win's a win, but if you are capable of evaluating each team's performance last night objectively, you will come to the same conclusion I did. Neither team looked good at all last night. BJ and the offense looked really poor all game, save the last two minutes. And if it weren't for the U's offense making mistakes (Brian Johnson), OSU wouldn't have scored 12 of their points. Thank goodness for the impressive Ute defense or else we'd be kicking dirt on the Ute's season. I know one thing for sure, I wasn't watching the #15 team in the country play a home game last night and if I were a fan, I'd be really worried. Continue to play like that and there is little to no chance of being undefeated going into Nov. 22, let alone after.
Translation | 9:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
there=their
week=weak

OSU may not be much better than Washington or UCLA this season. True, they beat #1 USC, but the jury is still out on whether that win was legit or a fluke.

The Beavers play Washington in a couple weeks and UCLA in a month. We'll have a better idea of how good the Beavers are after those games.

Still, a nice come back win for the Utes. The MWC going 6-1 vs the PAC 0 is raising eyebrows across the country.
Don't like Utes but good win | 9:56 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I am not a Utah fan but this was a good win for the MWC and for the Utah program. Utah is a good team and Johnson makes the offense work. Johnson is a good QB (not NFL caliber but good college QB). Utah has the inside track to MWC championship having both TCU and BYU at home.
Re: WOW | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
LOL!! Continue to play like you did last night and you'll have two losses before Nov. 22!!
Re: Parking Problem & Noise | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Ha ha ha! That post is just priceless! Obviously not a Utah fan.
Good team - bad fans | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Utah is a good football team - probably #12 after this win. Too bad the fans are so low class.
Silly Cougars | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
What's the big deal about the call on the 2 point conversion? So we are down 2 and win by 1 with the field goal. It would have added more pressure to Sakoda but I'm pretty sure he still would have nailed it. Of course it may have changed the way the game panned out but that call did not make or break the game..
What we've shown | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
up until now.
1) We can win in the clutch
2) We hurt ourselves and allow lesser teams to stay with us (i.e., we create the clutch)
3) We would rather accept a few harmful penalties than be more disciplined
4) Unless we become more consistent, Wyoming, TCU, and BYU are going to get the better of us
5) Louis is the best player on the team - everyone else should take a cue from him. He does his job and does it well, making no mistakes.
6) Too many of our fans don't think we are supposed to be where we are (rushing the field?!?!?!). Yes this game was close, but only because we made it close. Thank you to those who stayed in the stands and were mature enough to realize that we BELONG where we are, and simply escaped a close one; rather than thinking we beat a power team.
Both sides are wrong | 10:12 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU fans stop trying to make a controversy out of the pass interference penalty. Notice the only people trying to make it an issue are BYU fans and BYU fans posing as Ute fans. On the other hand, the national media spent a week debating/condemning the celebration penalty. Basically, if someone of impotance (other than biased rival fans) thought it was controversial you'd know about it.

And Fellow Ute fans stop trying to downplay the importance of the 2-point conversion. To say Utah still would have won by a point is foolish. If Oregon St. is up 2 rather than tied than they don't come out trying to throw the ball (which stopped the clock) to get down field to kick a field goal to win the game. They would have run the ball, ate up as much clock as possible and maybe put Utah in a more difficult situation to come back. It obviously changed the dynamics of the game.

I've never read so many nonsensical posts from both sides.
Cougar 4 | 10:12 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Wow, you guys slept through the second half and then pulled out a win...congratulations, that was an exciting ending, depressing for me, exciting for you. Good job.
AR Ute | 10:12 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Great win for the Utes! Congratulations!

Things I love about this team:
1) The Defense- those guys are stout!
2) The Kicking Game- King Louis is money!
3) Two Minute Drill

Things I am concerned about:
1) Ball protection
2) BJ is taking too long to make his reads. I would like to see him throw it away more often and risk an intentional grounding call than get sacked or fumble or lose yardage. He seems to do better when operating out of the shot-gun.
3) Direct snaps to Asiata are too predictable.
4) Penalties on third down.
5) Where are the half-time adjustments? C'mon Ludwig! Your offense is getting stifled in the second half!

Bottom line- That was one of the best finishes to a game I have seen by the Utes and my hat is off to them for making clutch plays.

BTW- it is whiny to lay the result of any game on a so-called "blown call". OSU had a myriad of opportunities to get the job done.

They just didn't.
BYU Baby | 10:15 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Good win for the Utes and the MWC. Johnson looked horrible. Every team benefits from refs "bad" calls so who cares about the call. The Utes pulled it out and they are 6-0 which is pretty impressive. But, storming the field???? Really Ute fans? Sakoda is a stud and will make good money in the NFL. Good for him. Utes better not play like that on Nov. 22 or they will be watching me and my Cougar fans storm their field on our way to the BCS!
davidutefan | 10:17 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
d&c 133:48........GO UTES!!!!! and go cougs until Nov. 22
Re: Russ | 10:20 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Ok, football genuis, if the Utes don't convert the 2 points to tie the game at 28, does OSU do anything different on offense, like run some clock? I don't think you can difinitively discern that the Utes would've got the ball back, at the same field position, with the same amount of time, or even that they would've got the ball back. With the upper hand (the lead) OSU takes a much different approach and the Utes (most likely) lose.
Stirring the pot | 10:20 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
For all you uties that are pumping your chests because you beat the team that beat the #1, remember this. Oregon St is 2-3 now and Stanford and Penn St have also beaten them.

Now that you have your last ditch effort win against a mediocre pac-10 team, aided by a controversial call, you can stop talking about the Washington game. Same situation

See you in Nov. BYU by 30
Coug in Oregon | 10:23 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Well done, Utes - great job hanging an "L" on the team that put the lie to USC's invincibility.

This season is sooo sweet - I'm sick, sick, SICK AND TIRED of hearing chirpy, condescending comments from PAC-10 fans about how the Cougs and Utes play in a lame conference and would be middle of the PAC-10 at best. This season is payback for 19 years of listening to that garbage here in Oregon. At this point, the silence is deafening...and I'm loving it. Combine the MWC's 6-1 vs. the PAC-10 with Boise State's big win at Oregon and Fresno State's victory over UCLA - payback is awesome.
Re: Fickle Fans | 10:23 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Yeah, what was up with booing the team while you were only down 1 point...in the 3rd quarter!! That was almost as embarrassing as rushing the feild. Let's see, your team is undefeated, ranked #15 in the country and down just one point with a whole quarter and a half to go. And you boo??!! Pathetic.
