Let's reiterate. If OSU had kicked the extra point at 20-15 it would've only trailed 20-16. If it had then kicked the extra point on its its next touchdown it would've led 23-20 instead of 21-20. That would've meant its next touchdown and extra point would've put the game out of reach had Utah not recovered an onside kick. For all of the excitement of this game, it would've been a moot point with better coaching from the Beavers.
Great game | 12:16 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The only problem? you could buy ticks 5 minutes before the game. Utah fans need to pony up on the dough and fill up that little stadium.

They did it! | 11:51 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008

"Guess what? We made the plays to win against a much better Oregon State team!"

Why did OSU get the point spread if they were better than you?

Nope, Utah played an exciting game. I forget the rankings and the spread and watched the game and cheered for the Utes,

Can we all be griends now?

LES North | 12:17 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
At least now we can put to rest all this talk about Utah beating BYU because of the great homefield advantage the Utes have at Rice-Eccles.

Great to see the Utes win tonight for the good of the league -- but the Utes were very sloppy on offense, and were on the ropes AT HOME against a .500 team. Yes, an Oregon State team that is great at home (just ask USC), but not a good road team by any stretch (just ask Penn. State).

If this game were in LES, BYU would have won by 21-plus points.
rushing the field | 12:19 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I guess rushing the field after a game winning field against a team that just beat the #1 team in the nation a week ago is embarrassing...

rushing the field means it was a great game and we pulled out a nail biter...when i was jumping down the wall, you can be sure i wasn't thinking "well, Oregon State is only 2-3 now, and we were favored to win by 10 1/2 points, so maybe i should just stay here"

i wouldn't care if we played Alta High School, if we pulled out a win in that fashion, i would rush the field...

i wouldn't care about BYU if Utah was ranked in the top 10, but i keep getting the feeling that BYU fans feel better about themselves when they get to complain about every little thing that goes on...

A win is a win when they squeak by an 0-5 UW team, but barely beating a 2-2 OSU team that beat USC and barely beating a Michigan team that beat a #17 (i think, or was it #15) is embarrassing...

i say congrats to both...lets keep this going until Nov 22nd...
utah/byu fan | 12:20 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
some byu fans are talking like the utes just lost the game! utah played awful! at times it was hard to watch. but great teams find a way to win. if this team can tune up and brian johnson can play a good game.(no turnovers) watch out.
all that matters is its a win. the utes live to go 7-0. every week is different...
Lots of Blue fans | 12:21 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
are congratulating you Utes on an exciting win. Don't label all of us because of some of our arrogant, idiot fellow-Cougar fans have no class.
Move the BALL!! | 12:22 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Johnson and CO. just seem to struggle moving the ball. There were huge voids of time where we just did nothing right. We had better pick it up because TCU and BYU are better than Oregon State.
Good win but C'mon guys!!!!
Anonymous | 12:22 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
all those of you who think the ucla win was nothing for byu well ucla was closer to being ranked when byu played them then oregon st playing the utes tonight
GO COUGS!

I WATCHED AND THOUGHT IT WAS PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
BYU stinks | 12:26 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Oregon State will beat Washington by 30. I doubt UCLA or Washington will win another game all year... Unless they play each other! BYU's schedule is a joke! If BYU were in the SEC they'd be 0-4 right now.
Better step it up | 12:26 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
if utah plays like that against BYU they'll get crushed. Any objective person would admit that!

Whether it was PI or not, that was a terrible pass from Johnson. So inconsistent. He hasn't looked very impressive at all this year. Then again i'm used to watching Max Hall.

Storming the field did look a little ridiculous. Exciting finish but come on....You were favored by way more than that...
BCS WIns | 12:34 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Until any other team in the conference can say they have won 10 of the last 13 games against BCS teams. Dont tell the Utes how to handle a victory!
To Storming Field 11:53 | 12:35 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
You wrote: "Don't worry cougs we were just warming up for when we storm the field after our second BCS bowl game win this January. I guess you wouldn't know the feeling."

I'm guessing the feeling you're talking about is getting Tasered? You really stormed the field that first time in Tempe didn't you? Nothing like the smell of burning Ute-honk flesh to sober ya up.

Rumor has it you guys just locked up a berth to the Poinsettia Bowl. Great job!
Thanks BYU bloggers... | 12:35 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
...who follow our beloved Utes so closely, watching and analyzing every Utah game, reading every article and working on your blog entries day and night for the benefit of the Utah faithful. We are glad that Utah football is such a big part of your life.

Also hope you enjoyed the 3.5 hours you spent watching our Utes pull out the win tonight. Sorry you had to scratch out that blog commentary about Utah losing that you had been working on all evening rewrite it after the finish.

Be sure to let us know how the Cougars do against Utah State on Friday since we don't really have the time or interest to keep track of your team the way you do ours.
Let's reiterate, Class | 12:44 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Those who coach, play or are working as part of the game crew go on the field.

Those who buy tickets, or have managed to get their hands on the Urban Meyer fill-the-stands-with-freebies-so-we-look-good-on-TV ducat plan -- they stay in the stands.

It's a simple concept.

You look foolish for rushing the field for a game you were expected to win.

You didn't win the game. The players on the field won the game. You only embarrass yourself when you hop over the wall and run around like idiots.
What Gives | 12:46 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Why is there more Y trolls on this thread then Ute fans.

The Utes played BAD yet still found a way to win.

I am still not impressed but I'll take it.

GO UTES!!
Play calling | 12:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Everyone is talking how great the last few minutes of the game were. How they finally looked good. Well maybe that is because the plays are already established for the 2 minute offense and we don't have to deal with the single play calling of Ludwig that happens throughout the rest of the game. Maybe I should give OSU's defense more credit and that is why the Utes couldn't do anything for most of the game. But most teams would look good on defense if they knew the offense was going to run the same play 3 times in a row. Not hard to figure out how to defend that.
Bye Bye Ludwig | 12:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
What an embarrasment.....nice game plan...Johnson comes close to costing the UTES the last 2 games ( and don't forget the Michigan turnovers that almost cost us that game).
Where are the play calls for guys that actually perform...like Louks...Brooks...

Been fun watching you Andy....enjoy your time off this winter...
Rulebook | 12:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Uh, faceguarding is only relevant in the NFL, not college.

Sure, the receiver looked like he was mauled -- if you only see the quick angle of contact on the highlight. The receiver literally turned back into the bewildered defender because the ball was thrown so far behind him.

But good win for the Utes. The contact got the call and that's all that counts. That was an amazing comeback in a short time frame.
re: to laughing @10:53 | 12:49 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Yea, but guess what, OSU is still only 2-3 and still with a losing record. Wow, that was impressive after being favored by ~10 and needing a last-second field goal for a come from behind victory.

It's funny, I was actually hoping to see utah win this one and was disappointed when it looked like they were going to blow it- I'm glad they pulled it out but after comments like yours and others I'm now kind of wishing they would've blown it.

Oh well, here's to a national showdown of 2 top-ten teams come November. Good luck!
Ghost of Harline | 12:51 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I'm surprised Oregon State didn't drop 10 men into pass coverage and leave Utah's leading receiver wide open on that two-point conversion. That probably would have worked.

byes | 12:51 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
does BYU have nothing but bye weeks until Nov 22nd? forget one game at a time... they get to go straight to #1. BCS championship. Do not pass go.
BYU/Utah | 12:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU appears to be better than Utah overall, but Utah only has to be better than BYU on Nov. 22nd. History of the rivalry has shown that the best or favored team doesn't always win. It is often about momentum and emotion.

You gotta love college football!

FIELD RUSH | 12:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
TWO POINTS TO PONDER ON
1.Byu beats a unranked team "UCLA" in the Las Vegas Bowl last year and the fans rush the field.
2. Byu fans beat unranked "Utah" last year in Provo and the fans rush the field.
Both games they where favored to win and they rushed the field. So for all you BYU fans who are putting the Utes down for rushing the field! Look in the mirror?
USC? | 12:58 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Usc was held to 313 yards against OSU, Utah got 336! So it great when OSU holds USC to a low average but when Utah puts up more points and yards on OSU the only thing byu fans can says is: "we would have killed them by 21+". RIGHT JUST LIKE YOU DID ON YOUR ONLY ROAD GAME AGAINST A 0-4 WASHINGTON.

By the way byU fans, ask any analyst and they will tell you that Oregon State will finish higher than both UCLA and Washington, in fact I would think that OSU will have more wins than both of those teams combined!

byU's opponents, against 1A teams, have a combined record of 3-10.....keep telling yourself how great your are! It is always great when espn.com says: "how many teams in the country would be 4-0 vs: N. Iowa, Washington, UCLA, WYO?" Now your going to add Utah State this week and make your SOS even weaker with a 3-14 record or your opponents.

Utah's opponents are(1A) 11-11, which means they lose to Utah but win other games! 3-14 means that the teams byu beats in the same teams everyone else is beating!!!!!

well done utes | 1:01 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
all you poor sports saying the refs gave it to them and the UTE faithfuls had no business storming the field after a 11 point come back IN UNDER THREE MINUTES ARE BLIND MORONS and FOOLS!
THAT WAS EXCITING FOOTBALL!FANS GET EXCITED-ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY WERE DOWN 8 POINTS JUST A FEW MINUTES BEFORE THE GAME ended!

too bad for OS they didn't learn from their win over USC. not ONE person can let up until the game clock says ZERO! great win U of U!
you BYU fans shut up and enjoy your brothers and fellow MWC team wins over the "mighty BSC--bs colleges? no I guess that is BCS. This is what it will take to bring down BCS monopoly on huge money bowls--so called mid level and "unworthy" teams not only blowing out-like 59-0 a stRuggling PAC ten team BUT then hanging on, not giving up, and for 2 minutes totaLLY KICKING butt AGAINST THE TEAM THAT JUST BEAT THE TOP RANKED TEAM IN THE nation! THAT'S GREAT FOR EVERY MWC FAN!ALL Utahns and MWC fans need to enjoy it while we can!
USC | 1:06 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Its funny how this is a quality win because OSU beat USC last week. Reality is, USC beats OSU 19 out of 20 times if they played em. BYU (who clearly dominated UW) beats UW 20 out of 20 times if they played em. I have to say that I think OSU beats Utah 15 out of 20 times if they played em. This game exposed Utah. They are lucky they won. OSU dominated them statistically the entire game until the last 2 minutes and even then they won the statistical battle, unlike BYU's win in which it was BYU that dominated.

BYU 42 - Utah 12 (3 Sakoda field goals)
Cougar Fan | 1:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Looking great for the Holy WAR of the century.

Lets go for 11-0 vs 11-0.

It was great to see you get two scores in under 2 minutes to win the game.

Keep it up baby!!!!!!!!!!!! Just remember to lose th last regular season game :)
Out of State Ute Fan | 1:08 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
HEY BYU FAN you out number the Utah fans 10 to 1 on this board. Why so many comments on our Utes. If your not worried about Utah then stop talking about them. We are focused on next week not a game in late November.
EMEY | 1:09 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
UTAH WON THE GAME BYE 3 POINTS THE 2 POINT CONVERSION DID NOT MATTER GO UTES.
JD | 1:11 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Those who think the PI call was right on, need to learn the rules. Horrible call, cost OSU the game. That being said, I'm always glad to see a PAC 10 team lose, even if it's to Utah.
What color is your blood? | 1:14 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I love how all of the BYU fans are dissing on the fact that that ute fans rushed the field after the game. Pull your head out people! Did you not watch the game? Yes, the Utes could have played better. But the fact is they were behind 8 points with less than 2 minutes to go in the game and not only did they score a touchdown, but also a field goal, keeping the utes with an unbeaten record. Im sorry, but if you BYU fans think would not have rushed the field after a game like that, then you must be an idiot... then again i wouldnt put that past a cougar fan.
Utah Man | 1:24 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I agree with everyone calling for Ludwigs head, he is pathetic. TO all you cougar fans, Last week #1 USC lost to OSU, Michigan beats a very good #8 Wisconsin team. We beat them both, and only played one half of football in each game. Great teams find ways to win. It was PI, like I tell my son who plays ball and complains about officials, good call or bad call they are part of the game deal with it. GO UTES!!!!!
Charging the field | 1:29 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
No BYU fan should be making judgments on charging the field. Remember when you beat UCLA on a blocked chip shot field goal? BYU should have crushed UCLA based on the rankings and records. You rushed the field why? Because of how you won not who you beat. Same goes for us.
Blue or Red | 1:33 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I would hope that zoobies and ugtah would be cheering for each other!!! There's a good chance the MWC to have 2 teams in the top ten. Don't be fools. Go UTAH. Kick the crap out of the rest of your opponents.

Couger forever!!

re FIELD RUSH | 1:37 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
not only was ucla not ranked.....i dont think they had a coach...nor a starting qb. and wait.....didnt they beat byu early that year? oh and to top it off if was a blocked field goal by byu. which would have won ucla the game. jeez make sure you only rush the field when you beat somebody good. i dont understand those ute fans.
I'm Andy and I stink | 1:38 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Why the faith in Johnson? ...sooooo eratic how many costly turnovers can we survive? Air Force? Michigan? OSU?

Except for some inept calls by OSU tonight ( like going for and missing a couple of 2 pt conversions) this game is gone...

Did you know... | 1:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
...that the two longest winning streaks in the country belong to...

BYU 14
Utah 7

May it be 21 straight wins for BYU and 12 straight for Utah on Nov. 22.
The blame | 1:44 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The blame for that terrible third quarter should not go to Johnson, it should go to Ludgwig. That was horrible play calling. What an idiot!
They won this game in spite of their offensive coordinator.
We've got the talent to beat anybody, YES, even BYU. We've gotta cut down those turnovers on the field, and the crap calls from the sideline.
As to the controversial call on the two-point conversion, that's a stupid thing to argue. Penalties, wether they effect that specific play or not, are called and influence the outcome of the game. If a player committs a face-masking (as the U did twice) call it, it gives them yards. If a player commits pass interference, call it. An illegal action is illegal.
Memo to Ute Football | 1:46 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Congrats on your victory and best of luck on your trip to Wyoming. Yes you do need to show up for a game next week. (Unlike after your PAC-10 win last season.) Please try to remember that the pokes are pretty mad at you for being bullies last year so you may want to bring the team that you had on the field in the last three minutes of the Oregon St. game and leave the team that played the previous 57 home.
BYUfan | 1:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
BYU fan here and I just wanted to say congrats to the Utes. Great gritty win over a quality out of conference opponent (this team upset the number 1 team in the nation last week folks). Way to show the PAC-10 (as well as the rest of the nation) AGAIN that the Mountain West is a conference of WINNERS and a force to be reckoned with.
Heres to an undefeated November matchup.
Washington Ute | 1:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Great job Utes!

They are 6-0 and still haven't played a complete game. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. Maybe the Utes are still building - not yet peaking - until they peak on November 22nd.

I didn't get to watch the game due to scout committee meetings at the church, but my University of Oregon buddy kept getting me messages on how things were progressing (he was a Ute fan tonight as he hoped they could silence some of the obnoxious beaver fans up here). It sounds like I missed a great game and look forward to watching it later.
az coug | 1:54 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Great job Utes you bring honor to the Mountain West.

The Mountain West deserves a guaranteed BCS bid to the confernce champ...

We'll see the undefeated Utes in November...BCS to the winner....The Cougs
Non veiwer | 1:58 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
HAHA. Did the crowd really rush the field after beating a 2-3 team?...And they carried the kicker off the field?! Awesome. Two big no-nos. Way to show the nation you belong.
Zoobs, quit whining | 2:10 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
about the controversial PI call. It doesn't affect the outcome of this game. If all else remains the same without the two-point conversion, Utah still wins--by 1 instead of 3. Big deal. Zoobs just love to whine.
Re: USC | 3:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Your predictions might hold a little more meaning if you could show that you could even do simple math. 3 field goals would give 9 points. You must be a BYU grad. Assuming you have 10 fingers I can't even give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't have time to take your shoes off to do the math. I guess you could be only 7 in which case - keep up the good work little fella.
Anonymous | 3:38 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
We're number fifteen in the country, act like you expected to win this game. From the endless shots of fans clawing their way onto the field on sports center, you would think they were a twenty point underdog.
