Go Aggies! Thanks for the great coverage on the team!

Playing not to lose is not a strategy to win.
Enough said, BYU by 40
Keep away | 7:54 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
I don't think it's the Aggies who will be playing the game of keep away. In the Utah game I think USU's defense was on the field 3x as long as their offense. Playing keep away isn't exactly what the Aggies do best. The best the Aggies can do is stop BYU's shutout streak. BYU 56 USU 13.

Coach Guy is saying all the right things and putting a brave face on being competitive Friday night, but, deep down, he knows he's overmatched.

He's a football coach. He's watch film of BYU. He knows the type of offense BYU has and knows he doesn't have the defense to stop them.

He knows BYU has a young defense and that the only chance Utah State has is to try to keep the Aggie offense on the field to prevent BYU's offense from working their magic. That strategy won't work, because BYU's defense will prove to be much tougher than he's hoping for.

I expect the Aggies to put up a good fight, but in the end, BYU will win this game handily. I just hope both teams can come out of this game without any serious injuries.

BYU 45 Utah State 10

I am sorry...but the Utah State Program is a joke. They don't practise as much as many high school teams and the coahing staff is so disorganized that they let quality LDS players slip through their hands. Of one of the fews days they pracitse...Sunday??? Guy and his staff need to go.
Belgie | 9:26 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Good strategy - try to play keep away. Maybe they should bring out the basketball team (can't hurt).

I'm betting that the BYU defense scores more than the USU offense - again.

It's going to be fun to watch my favorite team beat up on my alma mater.

We're hearing the same o'l same o'l from Brent Guy, he's already talking like he's lost the game "we want to compete" or "we want to match play for play" bs, come one coach, you know byu is going to beat us, but for gawd sake put your game face on and tell the world we're going DO WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN THIS GAME, not the same o'l "we'll run the football..." *snooozzzzzz*

Bring on John L!

To all the arrogant BYU fans out there: yes, we realize our football team isn't very good, at all. I don't know of any USU alum who isn't painfully aware of that. Some poor deluded souls still hold out hope that we might win, but most of us are just hoping for a good game, whatever that means. I'm not sure what phrases like "the Utah State Program is a joke" accomplish, other than to show you to be the shallow folks we all suspected you were. Enjoy your team's success. BYU is quite good this year, but to berate others shows a total lack of class.
Jack | 10:28 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
The upset of the year...USU 28, BYU 21. BYU's mistake is going for a shutout...they mentioned it was not on their minds but we are humans we know better!!! BYU is going to try to do too much to impress the BCS and end up with the spank of the season.
To: Aggie in WVC | 10:42 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Ummm, I read that comment, again, about the Utah State program being a joke, and I have one question: How do you know that was a BYU fan???!!! It actually sounded like it was a USU fan that posted that comment. So before you go off and ASSUME that it was a posted by a Cougar, why don't you read it again! I really don't think a BYU fan would want to get rid of your coaching staff... sounds like an Aggie to me. Oh yeah, and to "Jack"... keep dreaming!
tom_al | 10:55 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
yeah!!! 3 shutouts in a row... how do they do it??? i dunno they just do it. koji!!
go cougs! | 11:05 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
come on guys... byu creamed ucla 59-0. USU football is a joke.

BYU 35 USU 0
GO AGGIES! | 11:22 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Prevent the cougars from shutting us out!
Glen Olsen | 11:45 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
This game will be fun to watch untill half time. Then it's all over. the aggie defense will be sucking air and ready to quit. I know they want to win but lets be real USU BYU With Max hall. No such game as keep away. USU Will just want to get the ball . Then its 3 and out. good game to watch for a loot of laughs.
Leslieg | 11:47 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Go Aggies!! Keep the faith, unlike those who claim to have it. Love you BIG BLUE!!!
Show some class | 11:52 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
The mark of a true champion is winning with class.

Everyone knows the Aggie football program is struggling and that BYU is very good, so the likelihood of a blowout win by the Cougars is a near certainty.

Still, there are a few juvenile BYU fans, who can't resist rubbing it in.

Probably the same ones who picked on the nerdy little kid back in grade school just so they could feel better about their own insecurities.

It's too bad that the Quest that BYU's football team is striving for this season is being besmirched by a few childish BYU fans who haven't quite caught the true vision of what the Quest is all about.

The Quest is about much more than football, by the way.
iluvaggies | 12:09 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Right now the score is 0-0 and anything can happen during any given football game. That is why I am so disappointed in Coach Guys' comments and his apparent "lets play to keep the ball away" instead of playing to WIN. The team is a reflection of the leadership and that mostly comes from the head coach and his staff. How in the world are his comments supposed to fire up and inspire his football players to come on to the football field ready to play and to play like winners? Unbelievable but, coming from Coach Guy, what we have come to expect.
Go Cougars | 12:10 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Re: Show some class. The mark of a true champion is winning with class. I am glad that the BYU players understand the Quest. Otherwise, if they thought like a few of the "juvenile BYU fans" USU would have a good shot at an upset. Aggies are stuggling but hope is that they will rise again and the game will be a good in state rivalry.

Jason | 12:32 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
TO: Show some Class.
As I read the posts, I am not sure it is the BYU fans causing the problems
I really think its your own fans that are showing no class. I am a BYU fan for sure...but I am a Utahn first and foremost. I dont like to see the Aggies or the Utes lose...except when they play the Cougars.
Re: iluvaggies | 12:53 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
I think Coach Guy is taking a sensible approach. He knows his team can't play catch-up with BYU. He knows they can however, come out and play with intensity, and play to stay level with BYU. And at the end, on a few good breaks, maybe come out ahead and win. He is instilling a winning attitude in his players, he's just taking the sensible approach, rather than than saying "Let's go out and WIN!" and then the team gets demoralized at the end of the first quarter when the score is 28-0.
if Utah State... | 1:02 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Can just get on the scoreboard, they will have accomplished what UCLA, and Wyoming could not. Good luck USU, I noticed that USU puts more players in the NFL than any other team in Utah. I am a BYU fan by the way. Section 5 row4 seat 39. $970.00 for two season tickets!!

My "own fans"?

I'm as dyed-in-the-wool, true-blue a fan as you'll ever meet.

As a long time Cougar fan, my comments were directed at my fellow BYU fans.

And yes, the juvenile, smack-talking, BYU fans who feel compelled to poke fun at a program that is obviously not very good, are the childish fans who haven't learned to win with class and haven't caught the true vision of what the Quest is all about.

If the shoe fits, wear it.

And don't use the childish excuse that they were doing it too.
geezer | 1:41 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
In my opinion some Coug fans don't deserve the team they have. "Spirit, honor, tradition" certainly don't apply to some of the posts. Why belittle the poor Aggies? Why tell them to join the Big Sky and play Weber State? Yes, some of the Aggie fans are talking trash. Some are probably at least 13 years old and I suspect some of the Y remarks come from the same group. I kind of admire Aggie fans for sticking with their team in tough times. I hope their football program will come around. BYU wins this game, but it may be closer than some believe. Go Cougs!
RR | 2:04 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
I was browsing UCLA's fan site before the game and watched a video of someone interviewing UCLA's coach. He said he was going to keep BYU's offense off the field by running it down their throats. Well, BYU held UCLA to 9 rushing yards and nearly doubled UCLA's TOP.

USU must have a mobile QB or there is no way they'll be able to stand a chance. Washington had a QB like that and BYU couldn't stop him. That is the only person who has been able to make a game close with BYU. USU must also hold onto the ball. BYU is great at causing turnovers.

Here's hoping to shutout #3!
CA BYU FN | 2:05 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
All of you BYU/Utah St. fans living in Utah please get outside of the Utah bubble. Sports is sports and trash talking is part of the game and part of being a fan. Don't get offended so easily. Cougs are going to thrash the Aggies there is not doubt about it. Any one who thinks differently doesn't know a thing about sports and should stick to chess. Sorry Aggie fans Cache Valley cheese has gone moldy and will be for a long time.
blueflyonthewall | 2:25 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Hmmm. Some of us can even remember when BYU changed their colors to match the Aggies. Pretty weird when you think about it, isn't it? Trying to match the Aggies. A football game is still just that and in a lot of other ways Cougs are still trying to match the Aggies.
Talking Smack. | 2:56 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Talking smack or talking trash is the right of every sports fan no matter how good your team is. It doesn't matter if your 13 or 43 and I don't think it makes you immature if you like to ruffle the feathers of the fans of the other team. USU doesn't need BYU's (or Ute) fans pity, we don't need you to act all nice to us just because our football program is currently down.

Personally, I find the smack talk one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game when done right. Can we take our smack talk too far? Absolutely. Many sports fans take things way too far and can be lewd and obscene. But I think those who take talking trash beyond reasonable limits are in the minority and live in another world outside of realility.

So please don't refrain from a little trash talk because you feel bad for lowly ol USU. In my minds eye you'd be taking some of the fun away.

So I hope BYU is because the Aggies can smell an upset all the way up in Logan. :-)
RE: Talking Smack | 3:00 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
I can't take your smack talk seriously when you put a smiley face after your comments. Go Cougs.
CougblueinTF | 3:13 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
I kept seeing references to "Trolls" in past posts and then someone defined a "Troll" as a blogger who posts outlandish comments just to get a rise. Man, there are surely a lot of you out there who rise to the bait the Trolls throw out. They must sit back and really get a kick out of the presumptions that are made regarding who is a fan of whom, etc. I think most of us hope all the Utah (and Mountain West) teams do well except when we play each other.
Aggies win | 3:39 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
I'm sure we'll all be able to pick up some cheap "Quest" t-shirts at the D I when the Aggies spoil the coogers season this weekend. Aggies 21, zoobs 20. GO AGGIES!!!
Blueute | 3:45 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Lets play to keep the ball away is a strategy. Coach Guy is not saying they are not playing to
win. But if Hall and company are on the bench, his defense gets a rest and BYUs offense cannot
score. Will it work? Thats why they play the game.
Prophet | 5:29 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
My prediction: Utah State 67 BYU 7
I'm not sure | 5:33 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Which is worse: the one who acts childish or the one who feels compelled to point it out?
AgFan | 5:43 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Does Merlin Olsen have any eligibility left?
The team down south will boat race the Aggies once again. My only hope is that this loss is the final nail in the coffin for Brent Guy. Bring back John L!
logancougar | 5:57 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Thank you Obi-wan
Good, Guy | 8:36 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
It's hard to play "keep away" when you constantly go three and out.
Take note BYU | 12:08 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
TCU held the Oklahoma Sooners to 25 yards rushing on 36 carries.

You are not out of the woods yet. USU might be a gimme, but your conference woes are just beginning.

UNLV, Air Force, New Mexico, TCU, and Utah will be ready. You are now the bowl game for your foes.

USC was beaten by an unranked team and I believe could happen to the Cougs. Your major league opponents have won 3 games combined.

Here is one amazing stat-
Washington is ranked 109 on collegefootballpoll.com and Utah State is 110.
So just maybe, if the refs don't ruin it, USU could win the game- theoretically.
UW 109 USU 110 | 12:18 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
college football poll dot com has Washington at 109 in the U.S. while Utah State is ranked at 110.

BYU won in Seattle by a very small margin so USU does have a chance in Logan.

BYU is the "bowl game" for Air Force, UNLV, New Mexico, and TCU. Good luck and may the best team win without the help of any officials.
utahBouy | 4:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
I'm a Utah fan, but I realize BYU is superior to all of the other schools in our state. I know BYU has the national respect that all of the other programs in the state want, but we have to realize that we can't compete with a top program like BYU.

Over the next 10-20 years, BYU's recruiting base is going to continue to grow and those of us that love the Utes are going to have to find some way to be happy if we can beat the Cougs once or twice a decade. BYU may be the dominate power in our state, but please give we UTE FANS a little respect!
RE: blueflyonthewall | 8:06 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
"Hmmm. Some of us can even remember when BYU changed their colors to match the Aggies. Pretty weird when you think about it, isn't it? Trying to match the Aggies. A football game is still just that and in a lot of other ways Cougs are still trying to match the Aggies."
Yeah, guys, BYU matched the Aggies with their colors. The nerve. They should go pick some other color that no one else wears and at least be unique. I'm sick of BYU trying to copy the Aggies. Why don't they get their own identity for a change? If I see BYU copy USU with one more thing, I think I'll scream!
Re: Re: Taling Smack | 9:56 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Talking Smack isn't ever supposed to be taken seriously.
