use it, don't bury it | 3:08 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008
I do remember reading an article that it is possible to "burn" highly radioactive waste in a reactor and use most of it up, thereby reducing the amount of radioactivity.

If this is possible, why do we insist on burying it?

I worked on the Yucca Mountain Project for 10 years and saw most of the scientific data first-hand. I'm sure the repository will be safe.

Harry Reid and the Nevada delegation used to say "let science decide," but they turned from that years ago. Now they want political posturing to decide the fate of the nation's much-needed and expanding electricity that is generated by nuclear power plants. The anti-Yucca Mtn pseudo-science generated by the state of Nevada has fallen flat every time, as it should.

Reprocessing is extremely expensive today and not really feasible at this large scale. Experts say that will change, and Yucca Mtn will become a temporary parking lot.
