Utahns pleased with pick of Palin

Palin is an insult | 3:34 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I've always wanted to vote for a female candidate for the presidency...but this one doesn't wash.

There were several experienced females available to McCain, but he picked the inexperienced beauty queen who can talk a good line, while parrotting only the talking points.

Utah would vote Republican if McCain had picked Charles Manson. It doesn't matter.

If the public wants to vote for a man who was at the bottom of his class, and a woman who took 6 years to finish her college education at 5 colleges - well, I guess that says a lot.

"She's like us." I don't WANT a VP (or President) "like me". I want someone smarter, and a deep thinker.

I supervised more people at Hill AFB than Palin did as Wasilla's mayor. That doesn't make me more qualified! Wait. Maybe it does. I didn't have a "city manager" to actually manage my area, like Palin did.
McCain Is A Sleazy Liar | 3:36 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election.

What experience does the Junior Senator B.HO. have that is equal to the business and executive experience of Governor Sarah Palin?

Barack Hussein Obama is a lawyer, social worker (community organizer) and a junior legislator of less than 2 years, who votes present 40% of the time and votes 100% along party lines. No change, with zero accomplishments.

Governor Sarah Plain includes business and executive experience, Commander of a National Guard, Mayor and CEO, City Councilor and a community PTA member over a 14 year period and unlike Obama she has not snorted cocaine.

No wonder the media, has not completed the vetting of Barack Hussein Obama or asked him tough questions, like what qualifies him more to run for President than Governor Sarah Palin? What makes him ready for the job, more than Sarah Palin? Keep smiling

Utah voters feel no ill will toward McCain for not picking Romney??? You would have thought life as we know it ended when 1) Romney wasn't going to be President and 2) As a second slap in the face of Utah, Romney wasn't going to be Vice President either! This despite the incessant glowing and overly optimistic reports and projections of months past by The Deseret News, which, as we all know now, were of no avail.
David O | 3:59 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Palin is not what she appears to be yet Utahans will back her because of her facade as a good mother and devoted family person. Her and her husband are failures as parents yet want to legislate morality for the rest of us. Wake up Utah, there are plenty of better qualified, better parenting women choices out there for VP.
David O | 4:02 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
BTW, people that use Obama's name as a pejorative really showing racial bigotry. It is used to incite fear amongst the masses. It won't work. No one in this race is qualified to be president. They all have issues. Palin's are very apparent and her and her husband need to take care of the special needs child and that pregnant daughter.
uncannygunman | 4:02 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
The lies on Palin's resume would disqualify her from any job in the country. She couldn't get hired at Denny's. Why do we want her or her enabler McCain running the country? Unbelievable.
Mike P | 4:05 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
The majority of the "voters" read:sheep, would vote for Ossama Ben Ladin if he was a Republican.
Why does anyone even waste their time asking people in Utah about how they will vote in a national election?
They are like the "Stepford Wives" or the "humans" in "The Body Snatchers", they vote for the white, male republican.
The sooner the "press" gets that, the sooner we can all sit back and watch Utahns vote against their economic and national security needs and see our economy, schools and security fail.

Palin is a great pick! She has a variety of experience, from local to statewide. Obama supporters that say she lacks experience must see something in Obama I don't. I see very little experience in him, how does his experience qualify him for Pres. more than hers. Why doesn't someone say Obama needs to stay home and care for his two young daughters? Are liberals also sexist?
irreverant | 4:18 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
The McCain Campaign's choice to repeat blatant lies and distortions even after they have been shown to be completely false, coupled with Sarah Palin's belief that a woman should not have the right and the responsibility to "choose" even in cases of rape or incest, shows me that a McCain-Palin ticket would be even worse than our last eight years with Bush-Cheney in charge.
Anonymous | 4:29 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
As a feminist and a democrat, I find Mrs. Palin an insulting choice. There are plenty of republican women who are intelligent, driven, experienced, and understand the issues facing out nation. Mrs. Palin showed in her news interview that she has a woeful lack of understanding and education on major issues. Mrs. Palin is just a patronizing pat on the head to women everywhere; an assumption that McCain can get disaffected Hilary supporters to vote for any woman, regardless of their qualifications. Mrs. Palin is a step back for women everywhere, serving a a token female. There are capable women out there in both parties. Unfortunately, Mrs. Palin isn't one of them.
Sorry Mike P | 4:35 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I'm sorry, Mike, that you're uncomfortable living in a state where the majority of voters side with conservative values and principles --and who vote Republican much of the time only because the National Democratic Party is so left-wing as to leave most of middle-of the-road and conservative voters behind. Utah used to be solidly Democratic...it was the 1972 Democratic National Convention which at the height of "hippy happenings" and burning draft cards, that turned Utahns off. Demos haven't regained them because, well, they're still far-left. If you lived in the North East part of the United States -- like wacko-Vermont (Ben and Jerry-land) where there's a serious movement to try and separate their idylic little paradise away from the rest of the United States.... and where socialistic and the "nanny-state" reign supreme, then you could easily have substituted your thesis of "Sheep" to those voters who haven't put in a Republican dog-catcher in about 50 years. Republicans are endangered species in the liberal North East... There's only 1 Republican Congressman from the North East, and he's very very liberal. Just thought this should bring some balance to your perspective.
Not a good choice | 4:43 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I am not an Obama supporter and I still don't think Palin is good presidential material.
Matthew | 4:50 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Excuse me, wacko Vermont? I am from Vermont, and I can promise you that there is no "serious movement" to secede. No one in Vermont, aside from a handful of people, actually wants or is working towards that. Get your facts straight before you try to cast the state in such a light.
The sky is falling | 4:50 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Utahns would be pleased with Chicken Little (R) as the the Republican vp nominee.
Far Right to Far Left | 4:54 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
"Just thought this should bring some balance to your perspective"

That's an interesting choice of words. Most of the assumptions in the paragraph above are wrong, no matter which party you believe is right.

Palin isn't a bad choice, just not the type I thought McCain would pick. Many of her campaign people worked for HW Bush throughout the last eight years, which is something John McCain doesn't want most Americans to know. Those who work closely to the candidates in campaigns usually end up working for that person after the election. And, as we all know, it's not the President that runs the country, it's those who surround him. Can we stand for another four years of Bush cronies running the greatest country in the world?

Why doesn't someone tell Obama to stay home and care for his two young daughters?
are you kidding me?
liberals are sexist? ya thats right! the Repub-Mormons have always said its the mother who should stay home and take care of the family! It's the conservatives who have always said the breakdown of the family has been when women went out to the workforce and left the kids behind. Now its OK for Sister Palin to leave her kids to be VP of the US? WHY?

"Pollster Dan Jones"
How was the poll worded? Dan Jones has a reputation for cooking polls by using qualifiers in his wording.
I don't trust any polls done by them for either party.

If the majority of voters side with conservative values and principles in this state, how do you explain McCain dumping his disabled wife after several years of infidelity, and marrying a wealthy woman to further his ambition. If McCain wins Utah's votes, the Clinton jokes in this state take on a hypocritical context.

I remember a certain leader of the LDS church and his friend the president of BYU making a statement that it was impossible to be a Democrat and be LDS in the early 70's. Both were strong members of the John Birch society.
Intellectual Curiosity | 5:03 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Is there any evidence that Sarah Palin has ever wrestled with the issues? Everything I've seen of her suggests that she's held onto her simple world-view and cruised through life. I'd guess that she reads Guns and Ammo rather than The Economist. Yes, Matt Damon is "just" an actor, but I agree with what he's said about Palin. We should be scared to death with the possibility that she could be president. This is reality, not some bad Disney movie.

Watch the O'Reilly interview of Obama to see how a statesman handles a tough interview. Obama knows the issues. He's smart!!! Palin's a lightweight. McCain's judgment should be questioned after this selection. Of course, it's an effort to win the white house. He's not looking for a partner to run the country. He's looking for a gimmick to divert Americans' attention from the hole the Republicans have put us. If McCain wins, Palin will not be a Cheney. She'll be sent out for photo-ops. She doesn't have much more to contribute.
Re: Palin is an insult | 5:05 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Amen.

Although Rommney would have been the best choice, I completely understand why McCain couldn't choose him as a VP running mate. There is no way that Rommney would have helped his campaign due to Evangelical bigotry.

With that said, the choice of Palin is 100% political pandering. There were many far better choices (females included) that were available.

At this point, I have to believe that McCain's upswing in the polls and the title of this article (Utahns happy with Palin pick) can only mean one thing: People really are stupid. There is no other explanation. Its discouraging to see such air headed decision making by both McCain and voters.

At this point I have no vote. McCain is no longer an option. I cannot vote for a candidate who chooses a running mate that knows less about how to run our country than a typical service station attendant. Obama isn't a choice either. Ron Paul is useless. No options.

Mr. Obama's current attack on Sen. McCain -- that he doesn't send email is sick.

Here's the reality:

* John McCain's hands were crippled while he was held by the Vietnamese. HE CAN'T TYPE BECAUSE HE WAS TORTURED. He personally cannot manipulate a mouse or keyboard.

* Does he use a computer? Yes. He and his wife nightly review emails and she types his responses for him.

* McCain has been heavily involved in technology issues for years. He chaired the committee that oversaw the development of the internet, patent issues, etc.

Those daring to attack John McCain for not --- personally with his crippled fingers -- typing emails need to be ashamed. That is the sleaziest thing.

This attack by the Obama campaign is disgusting.

People are just impressed, as was McCain, that Palin is a pretty face, and a young one at that. When see her up against Joe Biden, they will begin to wonder whether the really want her to be President when Grandpa McCain kicks the bucket. This is one 40-year Republican and Romney backer who is not going to vote for McCain-Palin in November. It would be the worst disaster for America since Richard Nixon (and my first election as a voter was the election right after Nixon resigned).
Jim | 5:46 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I think that Obama just tells the public what he thinks the public wants to hear. I think Palin will bring an outsiders point of view into the fray.

To All Who Support Palin:

Why do you think she is qualified? If Obama choose a politician like Palin, I would think twice about voting. This isn't about politics. Let's look at her subjectively.

a) Graduated from the University of Idaho in Journalsim. Minored in Policial Science. Doesn't that say something? After all, she was a sportscaster, which I think is great. Use your college degree for its intention. Journalism fits perfectly into sportscasting. I believe Palin should've stayed being a sportscaster.

b) How can you support someone who believe if you can SEE Russia, then you must know the politics of Russia? Are you serious? Even Condolezza Rice would think that is ABSURD.

Please someone explain why. Please address these two points. Palin isn't VP material.
THIS GOP woman was not called! | 6:01 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I don't like this pander pick. I don't like Palin, I don't like MCcAin. I WILL NOT be a lemming, and vote for this ticket. To do so will kill any chance of my children ever running for president,as they are LDS. A vote for McCain, is a vote to allow the bigots to remain a force in the party. Get rid of them now, and your children will have a better chance in the future.
Steve | 6:24 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
The problem with picking at Gov. Plain is that it exposes how unprepared Sen. Obama is.

Consider:

* Government experience: Gov. Palin runs a state budget of over $11 billion and oversees 30,000 employees. Sen. Obama has never run anything except his campaign which has raised about $400 million and has 2,500 employees.

* Policy experience: Gov. Palin built her career on reducing government spending and taxes, both as a mayor and governor. She led to the prosecution and or removal of the GOP state chair and attorney general for ethical shortcomings. Considered a leader on fostering U.S. energy independence. Sen. Obama has shown up only 40% of the time to vote in the U.S. Senate and was named the #1 most liberal senator by non-partisan National Journal. In the Illinois Senate was notorious for avoiding a vote by casting a vote "present". Most cited achievements are someone else's bill that he co-sponsored.

* Cited qualifications: Gov. Palin beat a corrupt governor, cut taxes & spending and pushes more energy development. Sen. Obama has run for President securing the Democratic nomination.

The key point, of course, is Gov. Palin is only running for V.P. . .
kathyn | 6:50 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Sorry, but I think Sarah Palin is every bit as qualified as Obama. I think she has been very underestimated by a lot of people.

In interviews, Obama speaks like a true lawyer. No straightforward answers given, he just beats around the bush and hedges. He is as left-leaning as you can get. Because he gave a great speech a couple of years ago, everyone fell in love with him. Then Oprah came on the scene and he was the be-all and end-all.. Hillary has more experience than him. Why didn't he choose her? Joe Biden is just a tired old good boy.
uh, Steve | 6:53 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Palin IS a corrupt governor ... her "experience" is more fiction than fact ... you obviously have been drinking at the conservative sewage fountain ... she is guided by her small town world view, petty vendettas, and huge amount of ambition ... and get one thing straight, Steve, she would be more likely than any v.p. in recent history to walk into the oval office as president sometime in the next four years if the republicans can fool enough people ... come on, COME ON! ... do you think ANY Alaskan governor has tried to stop that oil from flowing? ... Do you think Palin really cares about U.S. "energy independence" as much as she does about the oil tax revenue for Alaska? ... She's dangerous, and she COULD EASILY become president unless this country wakes up.

Everyone misses the point, Utah doesn't vote the canidates they vote the party and it platform.
Most people forget the when Utah was made a state the LDS church was forced to garrentee that Mormons wont be a voting block. They weren't till the 80's when the church switch to a vote your conscience pollicy, tons of Californian Republicans moved to Utah and Reagan burst on the national seen and change the Republican party to something half decent. The final nail in the coffin the Utah Dem's choose to support abortion, instead of contraception and personal responsibility.

It is working now but will run out of fuel shortly. People want to know about the problems this past republicaan administration has gotten us into and what new people are going to do to get us out of the miserablle MESS.
Patriot's Dream | 6:59 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I've known Sarah for 11 years; Palin IS what she appears to be, and REALLY changed Alaska.

Utah, the "reddest state," had a budget surplus and spent it.

Palin gave Alaska's surplus back to the people.

Palin is a Reagan Republican whose actions match her words.

Obama's words are "change," but his actions are to vote the Democratic party line 100% of the time.

Do you REALLY want a President that votes with Nancy PELOSI and Ted KENNEDY 100% of the time?

Who wants 4 more years of the failed policies of the Democratic controlled congress?

Obama is merely a LAWYER trained at Harvard to persuade people with words.

Palin is as "qualified" to be VP (or President) as Bill Gates was to be Chairman of Microsoft.

Gates never ran a multibillion dollar company before he ran one. What made him "qualified" is he got the job, then did it like no one else in history.

In 2007, Alaska had the 32nd biggest state budget in the nation ($5.5 billion). 2009 revenue is projected at $11 billion, and expenditures will be $9 billion.

Governor Palin got the job, and did it like no one else in Alaska's history.

You can't convince me that Sarah Palin suddenly coming along isn't fate. Do you people purposely choose to forget 9-11? These are not ordinary times. Terrorists are trying to WIPE US OUT. You need to pull your heads out from where the "sun don't shine" & vote for McCain to keep our country safe. Country First!!
Nof for this Republican | 7:05 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I consider myself a Republican and was going to vote for McCain, that is until he pulled this VP pick out of his hat. My gut sense is that Gov Palin is a vengeful person. I think that the current investigation will uncover evidence to support that sense. I don't want to have such a person in the position of possibly becoming President should anything happen to McCain. I suspect the evangelical support that was key to putting Bush into office may put McCain and Palin there. McCain is campaigning in the shadows of Palin. That is not, IMO, the stature that the man that wants to lead the country should be. A small part of me wants McCain to win so that he will be punished having to work with Palin. Obamas tax plan is better for the low and middle classes. But he is too liberal in some areas for my liking. I think that my vote will go to either Barr or Nader. Some may think that is just throwing away a vote. But I'll have voted my conscience. Just think if all dissatisfied Reps. and Dems. threw away there vote to a third party candidate.
Thanks, | 7:09 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008

Friendoyours | 7:16 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Utahns, Republican and Democrat, should vote for Obama. Voting for Obama will make Obama, if elected, less likely to make war on Utah public lands, as did Bill Clinton who came in third place in Utah, and, who had nothing to lose by slapping a 1.7 million acre monument on us. If elected Obama would not want to alienate Utah from voting Democrat in the future. Similarly if McCain were elected, he would not want to do anything to keep Utah from returning to the Republican fold in the next election. This would discourage McCain, per his idol, Teddy Roosevelt, from declaring a "Yellowstone" in Utah. The best thing about McCain losing would be that Palin would be free to run for President in 2012--still as Governor of Alaska and not saddled with potential mistakes of a McCain administration. The sooner Palin is President, the better. Thus, voting for Obama would be a win-win-win. (It would also let the eastern Republicans who continually vote against Utah's interests realize they can't take Utah's Republicanism for granted. That would make it a win-win-win-win.)
Drill Baby Drill | 7:29 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Do people really think that Drilling for more oil will lower the price of gas at the pumps? The US drivers will not get any lowered gas prices because the oil came from wells in the US. The oil will still be sold on the world market and the cost will be the same as if the oil came from a well in the middle east. Prices skyrocketed due to speculators trading oil commodites. Regulate oil speculation and the price will lower.

Brazil has recently struck oil and that should help to lower prices. Gov Palin taxed the oil companies and brought a $5 billion surplus to the Alaska state coffers. Do you think that the oil companies did not pass that added expense on to its customers?

Bill Gates is chairman of Microsoft because he started the company and helped it to grow to the corporate giant that it is today. I think that proves his qualifications. If Gov. Palin had 30 years of similar experience she would have my vote. She doesn't, so she don't.
Dixie Dan | 7:38 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Why LDS Republicans continue to support another Evangelical candidate for office is a mystery. The Evangelicals trashed Romney's bid because he was a "non-Christian" in their eyes. Mrs. Palin supports this same bias against the LDS faith.
Anonymous | 7:42 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
No one can possibly think that Palin is qualified to be our president. Don't elect the oldest president in our history with a back up like Sarah Palin
Right Ascension | 7:45 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Sarah Palin is a small-town girl who was mayor of a small town in Northern Exposure who then became governor of a small-population state. Does Palin know exactly how many counties in California have more people than does Alaska? Or Utah? Or Rhode Island?

And now she is a vice presidential candidate. However, John McCain is still the presidential candidate. If a pig is yoked to a race horse, the pig is still a pig whether or not it has lipstick on it.

I have yet to find anyone in my circle of friends, associates and acquaintances who supports McCain enthusiastically on his own merits. I suppose that it is possible I have few contacts, but it is hard for me to forget that no one at my neighborhood caucus in March even mentioned McCain by name. Talk about the elephant in the classroom, lipstick or not.

If the majority of Utahns vote for McCain, they will do so without thinking about it much. If they compare their lives in 2000 against their lives in 2008 after 8 years of Republican mismanagement, Utahns will look for someone else for whom to cast a vote.
Greetings from Alaska | 8:00 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
I'm so happy to hear that people in Utah love Sarah as much as we Alaskan's do. She's got the highest approval rating of ANY governor, approximately 80%. She's going to make an incredible VP. Is she perfect? No. Has she made mistakes? Absolutely. We all have. I simply ask you to please remember this is Father's plan not man's. I believe Father has great things in store for all of us with McCain and Palin working together. The election will turn out the way Heavenly Father intends it to. Sarah is so awesome. We miss her being in Alaska with us daily, but we know when she wins this election she will continue to do an amazing job for the entire United States of America. As an employee of the State of Alaska, she's my boss. I will personally miss her. Our love to all of you from a proud Alaskan and an even prouder American.

What it all comes down to is that the liberal whiners and moaners have their knickers in a twist because they can't find anything of substance to whine about with Palin. Every time they open their mouths, they sound more and more like kindergarten children trying to one up each other with lies. The facts stand for themselves.

If you don't like Utah because there are so many right wing republicans, move. No one has to vote for Obama just because the liberal whiners tell them to do so.

This whole election is clearly marking new territory in that neither of the republican choices are lawyers, pundits, or pandering to the status quo in Washington. As a former resident D.C. it is refreshing to have a couple of mavericks taking on the old boys.

Liberals need to stop moaning because it makes them look silly. I would always rather vote for a military man or a woman than a professional do nothing like Obama. I am another woman for McCain and Palin. I can't wait to vote this year! Oh, and it isn't all about oil people. Learn the facts, not gossip.

I wouldn't vote Republican if my life depended on it. 4 to 8 more years of what we have had these last 8??? No way!!! If Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa were running Repub, I would not vote for them. Party policy is what I look at but I listen to where the candidates stand. It's going to be hard this year because neither is perfection or near it, but after reading between McCain and Obama, I will give Obama a one term chance to make things better. If you have to vote for someone you don't care for, at least make sure you agree with his ideals.

Issues First | 8:20 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008
Not all Utahns approve of Palin. Unfortunately, Utahns have been trained not to truly evaluate information and evidence before making decisions. Witness the fact that Utah is the # 1 place for consumer fraud. Also, witness the strangle hold of the state Republican right wing faction over Utah politics. Utah lawmakers no more represent the value of typical Utahns than McCain/Palin will.

What is more important if one chooses not to vote on the basis of the issues first, is what does this choice say about McCain.

In these seriously troubled times we have a geriatric politician making a choice for the second highest office in the country on a "gut check" level. Clearly, there was no back ground check or significant vetting to see if this woman was an appropriate match, if she had the intellectual muscle and the necessary fund of knowledge on enough of the important issues.

This country has had enough "if I knew then, what I know now" nonsense, imagine what he is going to say in a few weeks when her "accomplishments" have been fully investigated.

If this is how he/they will run the country, count me out.
