nuff said!
We always get our own refs. Keeps our conference up.
Locker stupid play. Just like when he was checking his wrist band on the ground instead of jumping up and conserving precious clock time.
I'm not worried we'll crush UW.
He didn't lightly toss the ball over his shoulder (Mark May is such a dork for ranting about the poor call on ESPN). He emphatically hucked the ball in the air, and it didn't come down for several seconds. Lightly tossed over the shoulder? Pretty good hang time for a light toss...
Lastly, final plays/calls are never the reason a team wins or loses the game. It is the complete culmination of 60 minutes of play. If Washington wanted to win the game, they should have scored more points throughout the 60 minutes.
Neither of those terms show up in my dictionary?
If PAC-10 officials called it on a PAC-10 team playing a non PAC-10 team, is there even a question? They are the biggest homer refs I've ever seen. If they made the call, it was because they had no other choice.
Rather than ranting at the refs, perhaps the whiney Huskey fans should be ranting about an un-disciplined player that would celebrate in such a manner. Or even worse, an un-disciplined line who can't get a block when it matters most. This is why Coach Willingham will be unemployed before the season is over. Coaching is more than just making a play. It is about teaching the players to play appropriately. Two plays in a row they did not!
Cal: 66
Washintgon State: 3
Washington looked like a team playing to salvage their coach's job. This loss will probably break them up mentally for the season.
For those of you who say BYU "isn't" a top 25 team, you might want to check out the polls...oh, I guess you might want to check them again...BYU is ranked as a top 25 team in every single poll in the country. So, yes, they are a top 25 team even if you don't like it.
Was the unsportsman like conduct penalty a bad judgment call?...in my opinion, yes it was. It shouldn't have been called in that situation. Let them play and let them be excited. But it was called and UW had to deal with it.
Throughout the telecast, the announcers kept talking about how a "Pac 10 running back" or a "Pac 10 offensive line" or a "Pac 10 defense" should perform.
Guess what...a Pac 10 kicker should be able to make a PAT from 35 yards at home to put the game into OT. UW didn't execute enough.
Last time I checked team don't get extra bonus points for style...all that matters is the final score when the time runs out.
and the d looks like they are in quick sand.
i assure you ucla is thinking about last year and watching this game is licking their chops
And, yesterday's win goes into the record books--for all time, no matter the opinions! Deal with it.
BYU then BLOCKED the kick to win the game. The blocked kick had nothing to do with distance.
Sometimes victories aren't pretty. Sometimes things are a little messy, but there is no question that BYU won it FAIR AND SQUARE in an extremely hostile and difficult environment.
I agree that the defense has some work to do.
BYU actually did a good job overcoming many momentum changing events (i.e. missed INT that would have gone for seven but ended up going for seven on the other end eventually, Unga fumble in the endzone, Washington player be carried off the field, and endless Locker plays that shifted momentum). I did not expect BYU to overcome all that.
Anybody watching the game would tell you that BYU is a very good team, clearly the better team. The offense is an absolute machine and would give any team all sorts of trouble, extremely efficient.
Hard to draw any conclusions about the defense because Locker is a beast and unique in his abilities.
The national media should not look down on the BYU victory, unless they only look at the score and last 15 seconds. BYU overcame huge momentum swings, won in a tough stadium, on the road, and clearly looked like the best team.
I doubt ESPN crew watched the entire game on a competitors network, so their observations came from a snapshot of the game.
Rules are rules and violation of them effects the outcome of games.
The celebration penalty was actually the right call, it was only dramatic because of when it occurred. And is part of the game!
What is the difference if the NCAA changed the rules and said that all pass interference penalties would be enforced at the point of the foul, that would change the game. (BTW, that is the way it used to be until the NCAA changed it.) A team who committed a PI penalty late in the game deep in their own territory almost certainly would loose the game because of the field position given up as a result of the penalty. Yet those were the rules.
If you have a beef with the way this game ended, you should complain to the NCAA. Perhaps the rules need to be changed, but there was nothing inappropriate in that call being made when it was made.
Perhaps we should go back and change the record book and eliminate all the wins that occurred because of PI enforced at the foul spot?????
Make Sense?????
And that call didn't win us the game. 500 yards of offense did. 12 of 14 on third down did. 136 yards rushing by Unga did. 30 of 41 passing did. Zero sacks did. 10 catches for 148 yards by Pitta did. Making all four of our PAT's did. Scoring four TDS did.
Worst call of the year. It wasn't even the worst call (or more appropriately non-call) in the game, much less the day, and I guarantee that a correct enforcement of the rules will not be anywhere near the worst call of this still very young season.
BYU won the game, but I don't think it will help them in the polls this week. ESPN is ripping the refs also. BYU didn't make the bad call, but they are the ones looking bad for the bad call, I don't think its fair to BYU.
But that being said, ECU is the non BCS school at the top of the list, Utah's college football fans need to hope the Pirates lose a game, otherwise they are going to get in the BCS game. BYU really needs to look impressive against UCLA to convince anyone they belong with the big boys.
It was great to get be there to say I was part of the win. It was just great. It's so nice to see the Cougars find a way to win a close one. Now as fans we have to get ready for next weeks game. Take lots of lemon for the voice, work out more so I can climb the grand stand and take my place cheering them on again. The fact is we have to take it a game at a time. We have to be ready. We can do it. Raw, raw, raw. Go cougars.
The first comment on page 1 of this blog (WAAA) shows why Cougar fans are hated around the nation - poor losers and even worse winners. You dodged a bullet, be grateful.
BYU's schedule is not BCS-worthy. If you can't admit that, you don't know football. Utah's schedule is also easy.
BYU will surely drop in the polls. A 1-point win over a weak team is going to cost them, plain and simple.
Holds occur on every offensive play. Flags are thrown when a hold obviously affects a play. BYU did not have an answer for Locker - he was too fast and too strong. BYU's saving grace was Locker over throwing wide-open receivers.
The player of the game was Dennis Pitta. UW could not contain him. Unga was OK, but like Locker, made a key mistake that could have cost his team the game. Collie was horrible.
BYU's linebackers and DB's were almost always out of place and even their middle LB's were no match physically for UW's sophomore QB.
That's not hating, it's the truth.
Now, to keep UCLA from spoiling the party at our place this Saturday. After UCLA's upset win in their first game, they might be a much better coached team than the one we played twice last year. If so, Saturday's home game could be very disappointing.
I'm rather disappointed in BYU's coaches' inability to adjust during a game. They never concentrated on stopping Locker (running or passing), nor did they place Collie on the other side of the field when the sun was in his eyes, which seemed to have a lot to do with his missed receptions in the first half. Why throw to a receiver that's blinded by the sun? Silly.
If BYU doesn't make major strides between weeks 2 and 3, the kind that are touted to be normally made between weeks 1 and 2, this Saturday could be a major disappointment for BYU fans. Let's hope Bronco meant what he said by having more to work with in improving the team. He seemed pleased with some things, but indicated that there were corrections to be made. Let's hope they're the right ones!
he said - they said - she said - we said - guess what? BYU won - simply one can ascertain this fact by observing the END SCORE...The End.
The rest is just white noise...............

Lou Holtz has a personal interest in bringing down BYU's win, as his son is the ECU coach. That being said a 24-3 win against a highly ranked BCS opponent will trump a 28-27 win against a troubled, losing BCS program amy day.
Right now the BCS gate crasher rankings would go this way:
ECU
Utah
Fresno State
Utah
