PAC-10 Officials. | 8:32 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
It's the officials fault for sure.

Three officials throwing flags at the same time?

First flag thown against Washington in the game at 0:02 left in the fourth quarter?

Yep, the officials gave the game to BYU.

Washing played a perectly clean game, no penalties whatsoever.

Give me a break.

Why would a Utah fan come in here talking smack? BYU beat a PAC 10 team this week and will again next week. But, that's ok, go ahead. Tell us we're making the conference look bad while you're trying to "avenge" a 27-0 loss to ....laughing hysterically.....UNLV!!!!
Has UNLV won more than 2 games any year since Sanford's been there? I bet they're grateful they get to play Utah every year.......
I usually go for the classy comments, but these Ute fans are unreal. I'd love to see their same comments had they beat Washington the same way. I bet they'd be just the same, right Utes? I bet they'd rip the officials after they were the beneficiaries.....
Oh, gotta go. Watching tv....looks like Collie's still open....

I don't care one bit about the outcome of this game, but I can't stand that stupid rule. I have always hated it, and this game only shows why it is so aweful. I am not saying anything against the refs here for what they called, I am attacking the rule it self. To have a penalty for being excited in that type of situation in so absurd. There is nothing unsportsman like in what this kid did and this rule really hurts football. I can't stand the old stuffy jerks that can't see that a kid being excited isn't anything close to taunting the other team and therefore shouldn't be against the rules. The NCAA really needs to take a look at this and apply come common sense (which they don't seem to have).
Blueute | 8:39 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
 1. For those of you who didnt like the refs, you can greet them in Provo where they will try to help UCLA Saturday, by nullifying the home field advantage.
2. I saw Utah and BYU play in the Rose Bowl and can tell you the refs hosed both teams. They do anything they can to build up their BCS Pac 10 conference.
3. The PAC 10 is the only conference that insists on its own refs home or away for non- conference games. Seems like they are afraid of a fair fight.
4. The blocked point after attempt didnt keep the Huskies from winning, it stopped them from going into OT and no Husky fan knows that their team would have won in OT.
5. Stop blaming the Husky kicker; Jorgensen said the whole defensive line had a great push into their backfield and if he hadnt have blocked it another linemen would have blocked it.
no fault | 8:37 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
No fault on the ref. who threw the flag at the end of the game?

Not having a dog in this fight I must say that the penalty was so weird. The guy who scored the td did not throw it at the crowd, or at the other team, or... but threw it down behind his back! and then celebrated with his fellow players.

Bad call. The extra point would have been a gimme...

not a good call

LV Bowl | 8:42 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
BYU will end up playing Washington again in the Las Vegas Bowl in December. Washington will be playing to win, cause Coach Ty has just been fired... BYU will win again...and the discussion will be stopped.
Colorado Cougar Fan | 8:44 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
From Yahoo Sports: "After scoring the touchdown, the player threw the ball into the air and we are required, by rule, to assess a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty," said referee Larry Farina in a statement. "It is a celebration rule that we are required to call. It was not a judgment call."

I don't like winning like that either, but I feel much better knowing it wasn't a judgment call. Rules are rules no matter how stupid they are. And the Cougs were all over that blocked kick!
re anonymous 8:15 | 8:52 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
At 42-14, I dont think UNLV is glad they play The U every year. But I am sure byu fans will try to talk smack on this win. Comparing half time scores? That is a new low.
To all of the byu fans getting mad at a U fan for coming on your thread, go look at any of ours! byu fans almost always outnumber U fans with insults, name calling and my dad can beat your dad comments. Bottom line, bywho had an out of conferance game against an unranked team and you barely won, making the MWC look bad. Utah won by 2 against Michigan and we ran out the clock instead of winning by 5.
I hope byu keeps winning, it will make the Utah win all that more fun in Nov.
wayne | 8:50 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I hope that washington had vastly improved effort or that BYU didn't have much of an improvement form the UNI game. the office did fine except for the 97 yard drive for a touchback. the defense on the other hand looked bad. I chalked the defensive performance in the UNI game to first game jitters. a better QB would have torn them apart today.

UCLA will not bring the freshman team with them next week as washington had to due to injuries. UCLA is bigger more experanced, better than wahington. hopefully this doesn't bring doome next week.

bronco and the crew has a lot to do before next week. think no big plays no give aways.
Bad defense | 8:52 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
BYU had a dominant offense, but they will not win all of their games with that TERRIBLE DEFENSE. Washington fans, did you see how many times you got away with holding calls!!! and the ref was right there. Enough said. BYU is a much better team, but Washingotn did come out with heart. We better get some better secondary players or we are dead next week.
Collie's still open | 8:52 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
However, it doesn't matter because he dropped the ball....again.
Anonymous | 8:54 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Interesting how everybody already has UW as the tenth place team in the PAC 10. Let the season play out and see where Michigan and Washington finish, and more importantly who wins the BYU/Utah game. Then you can all harp on each other how the loser got robbed in that game etc.
Vernal Roid | 8:54 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
They were exposed on their poor pass defence, any quarterback that can throw will destroy BYU,What's the problem with our defence? Quit talk about the quest and start talking defence.
true blue | 8:54 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
If you read the refs comments after the game he said that it has become mandatory for them to make these calls. The NCAA is cracking down, and due to the fact that PAC 10 officials have been fined in the past for bad calls they weren't taking any chances(last year they were issued fines for the Oklahoma-oregon game from two years ago).

I know Ute fans are mad, but think of all the teams around the country that usually get hosed by the PAC 10 home town officials.
PAC-10 fans | 8:57 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I have to ask the question. Why are PAC-10 fans so worried about BYU and Utah joining the PAC-10 when they believe they will be cellar dwellers? Wouldn't that just mean more wins for thier "mediocre PAC-10 teams" that BYU and Utah always seem to play? These guys know that Utah and BYU will make noise in their conference like they are already.
cougarblueutehater | 8:58 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
rules are rules. BYU got cheated from several no calls on corner backs hanging on to reed and others. fact is you got beat! i think at the end of the game bronco was telling willingham that he knows of a school up north that might need a new coach. congrats to fui, he and the oline did a great job of opening some huge holes for unga.
Great Victory!
Anonymous | 9:00 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
That would be DEFENSE Vernal :) Something BYU was lacking! Maybe it was defence they were playing!
Wade Gee | 9:07 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I disagreed with the holding call, but anyone who thinks it was the deciding factor in the kick being blocked, please go to ESPN and look at the photos. This wasn't one of those blocks where someone behind the line jumped to get a hand on the ball. (Which would have to be the case for the harder angle argument to hold any water) Jorgensen was right on top of the holder and would have blocked the kick regardless of where it was from. Blame the UW line for not blocking properly even though they tried every thing they could as the photo clearly shows number 76 tugging on Jorgensen's jersey for all he's worth. You can go back all game and look at questionable calls both ways. Bottom line BYU blocks the extra point and dominated statistically. quit whining
The Rule | 9:08 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
thanks to Rule 9, Section 2, Article 1 of the NCAA rule book, which says throwing the ball high in the air constitutes an unsportsmanlike penalty.

End of Story
Wade Gee | 9:10 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Sorry, I meant I disagreed with the celebration call.
ok | 9:10 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
its not the refs, its the rule, take away celebration and you take away emotion. It ridiculous that a 20 something year old kid can't get excited after scoring with 2 seconds left!
Ferndale, WA | 9:11 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Wow, still all the comments about the holding calls? Did you watch the game? Hall had MUCH more time than Locker. I'm not biased - I grew up in Utah and have lived in the NW for 14 years. I like both teams. But honestly, you BYU fans are showing your lack of football knowledge. Also, I don't think "throwing the ball in the air" is the same thing as dropping it over your back, so please stop reminding us what the rule says. We know already. The refs could have called this one either way. With the game at stake, I think they made the wrong call.

I was glad to see BYU pull it out. But it was a hollow victory against a team that has had its share of bad breaks, including the young man (Huskies' DB #15) who was seriously injured today.

BYU Fans, show some class. I can't believe you're whining about a win!
Thinkaboutit | 9:12 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Every game won by the non-BCS conferences against a BCS conference team is a huge win for all of us little guys. The Utes and Cougars need to go undefeated so that we can have two top ten teams playing each other in November. This would almost ensure the winner going to a BS/BCS Bowl game. We should all cheer for the teams to represent well out of conference.

The call on the QB from Washington was the correct call as he didn't just toss the the ball to the side. Instead he thrrew it up in the air 20 +or- feet. By the current rules that is unsportsman-like. Too bad he didn't just drop it and hug his teammates. It is sad to hear the simple cop-out, "It was the ref's fault!" Man up to your own mistakes and learn from them and maybe next time you will acquire your desired result. If you disagree with the rules then try to change them. Don't hate the player, hate the game!
Go Cougs and Utes, BUST SOME BCS CHOPS!!!
Price BYU Fan | 9:15 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Great job, Jan, on the blocked kick. You were an awesome player at Carbon, and you still make us proud!!!

By the way, congrats to Utah for their win. I am looking forward to a great showdown later this year. Go Utes and Cougars!!!
Wade Gee | 9:16 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Sorry, I meant I didn't agree with the celebration penalty.
Nothing to be proud of | 9:18 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
BYU may have a good team, but they can't play together worth anything. Almost reminds me of the NBA guys in Greece who brought home the bronze. Not going to be a pretty season for BYU after struggling with two weak teams. Obviously next week against UCLA will tell where they really are.
D-Fence better step it up! | 9:19 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Or UCLA will run the ball all over us, I'm sick of seeing 3rd and long and we play the most conservative prevent that anyone can get open. Plus with only 3 rushing, the qb has all the time in the world to find someone, please RUSH 4 at least!!! UCLA will either be a good game or a shoot out. Come on D!
Random Thoughts | 9:24 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Did I not say, a few days ago, that BYU just needed to win? I did say this and I did think it would be a close game but not as close as it ended up but in the end, BYU got the win. They best get that D ready for a UCLA team that had the week off to prepair for BYU. Giving Norm Chow extra time to get ready is not great news for Cougar fan.

But for today I give BYU props, things happen in games so no excuses, BYU won.

Utah took care of UNLV just as I thought they would by thumping them. Right now Utah does look like the better team in the state of Utah and I dont say that because I'm a Ute fan, just saying it from what I've seen on the field thus far.
Wade Gee | 9:24 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
To Ferndale: I absolutely watched the game. And there were calls all day that were questionable. In fact the only stat BYU didn't win was penalty yards. Did you look at the photo of the block? I suppose you are going to say the blatant hold there was a good no-call because it was the end of the game? Also, as I stated before, I didn't agree with the celebration call, but if YOU watched the game you would see he didn't drop the ball over his back, it went quite high in the air. Nobody's whining over a win, just trying to defend against some of the stupid comments here.
Jimmy | 9:25 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Let's go UCLA.
UCLA will have two weeks to pick apart this mediocre BYU team. It's going to be ugly.

An unimpressive win over a high school team and a squeaker over a PAC-10 bottom dweller. Very nice cougies.
Lucky | 9:25 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
If BYU fans would like to know what the rest of the nation thinks (that's outside of the bubble happy valley) then they should go to espn.com and check out the poll. Or watch sportscenter and see how every anchor/announcer is railing on the refs for calling that last call.

Bad call, BYU got lucky, they will lose next week. Time for a slice of humble pie I would say.
Re: Thinkaboutit | 9:29 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The Washington QB "threw the ball up in the air 20+ or - feet"???

Are you insane? I was at the game. He tossed it over his shoulder. If the rule says an infraction occurs when "the ball is thrown high into the air," the refs missed this one. I've seen MUCH more blatant celebrations in other games with no call made.

BYU played a little better than Washington, yes. But the refs made the wrong call - clearly.

DEFENCE is also correct, according to my Webster's dictionary.
Idaho Cougar Fan | 9:33 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I posted earlier and I'm going to add that UW will be competetive with whoever they play in Seattle. This may be a good win for BYU as the season goes on! Enjoy the win and I think BYU will be just fine against UCLA. It will be a tough game but BYU should win at home!
OK, everybody let's be adults... | 9:36 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
OK everybody, let's be adults. First, Washington was NOT cheated. BYU was cheated. A blatant hold on the last drive was not called. The drive would have ended from it. Multiple holds were missed. A blatant personal foul was missed. If you are a doggie fan...close your pie-hole. You were treated more than faily by the refs.

Secondly, Washington had EVERYTHING to play for. Their season was on the line, their coaches job is on the line. They played their little doggie hearts out. BYU, on the other hand, stumbled and bumbled with all their talent. But they won and by the way, they got so much penetration up front, the extra point from 10 yards would have been blocked also! Truth. Washington will go about 500 hundred this year. Michigan will go about 500 hundred this year. BYU and Utah played fairly equal teams over two weeks. BYU and Utah are about equal (maybe an edge to Utah this year...). The outcomes of two years worth of games head to head shows that.
Wade Gee | 9:36 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The best part about all this is it will all be played out on the field in the coming weeks. So save your BYU hater comments for then. Nobody knows who is going to do what. Also, to Lucky while your on ESPN look at the photo of the block and try to justify how the penalty effected anything. Jorgensen is well into the backfield.
Me | 9:36 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
What happened to the BYU blowout. You BYU fans are so arrogant.
re:Lucky | 9:37 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Let's see, two blocked kicks in the last three games.

Two huge (uncharateristic, "unlucky") fumbles by Unga at the most unopportune times.

Quality special teams play is important. It wins and loses games.

Just ask Michigan about ("Lucky"?) Louie at the U.

"The Washington QB "threw the ball up in the air 20+ or - feet"???

Are you insane? I was at the game."

And the rest of us have seen the replay many times...

I guess you see only what you want to see. Check out the replay yourself, and then post.

In the meantime, the rest of us accept your apology.
bigmontanan | 9:43 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I really liked the offense today. The defense is very concerning. They did not have much luck stopping a pretty toothless offense. If they don't play better, the offense is going to have to play out of their minds every game to make it to the Utah game undefeated. I think the offense could win them any game they play if the defense doesn't make any huge mistakes though.

Too bad that UW's quarter back couldn't just drop the ball like every other player in college football does after a big score. He forced the ref's. They know what they are required to call. That still certainly didn't guarantee BYU the win. The cougars earned it today either way.
Wisconsin Ute | 9:44 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I know, I know, the Y should now be ranked number 1 after slipping by a PAC10 team that got beat 44-10 by Oregon last week, and Directional Iowa was better than Michigan ...
PAC Ten Officiating Backfires | 9:47 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Here's how I see it. The officiating was horrible throughout the game. They never called hitting helmet to helmet, and they missed or refused to call pass interference against WU early and holding against WU late. At the end I think this celebrating penalty was intended to be a makeup, which probably would not affect the outcome. In any case BYU blocked the kick so they deserve the win. Hats off to Locker!
Shawn | 9:48 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The penalty does not matter. BYU outplayed Washington and the kick would have been blocked at any angle because the defense was on top of the kicker. ALL THESE PREDICTIONS ABOUT UCLA BEATING BYU ARE SILLY. Let's just wait and see.
Wow | 9:48 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
ESPN badmouthing a non-BCS, MWC team, the conference who cut TV package ties with ESPN, and refuses to kiss up to them...

What a total surprise...

Anyone care to mention to ESPN tha a non-PAC 10 team traveling to a PAC-Stadium with PAC-10 refs and gets a "W", it counts as a "W"???

That's like saying it's meaningful that Fox News is sayin nice things about the Republican Presidential ticket... Or BET is saying that Obama would make a good President.

TCU | 9:51 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The best teams usually win. The top teams in the MWC did well. TCU, Utah, Air Force and BYU all won as they should. Anyone noticed how good TCU is looking? They haven't play tough teams (New Mexico & Stephen F. Austin) but they are killing the teams they are playing. BYU has to play on the road. I think this will be their most difficult test until they play Utah.
Ferndale | 9:57 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Yes, Wade Gee, I saw the game. I was there. I saw Locker casually toss the ball over his shoulder. It did not go 20 feet in the air as claimed. I doubt it was 10 feet in the air. Maybe not even that high.

Was there a hold on the PAT attempt? I didn't say there wasn't but I thought the game was called pretty evenly.

I'm certain you didn't mean my comments were stupid and that you were alluding to someone else, so I won't take offense.
Gretzky | 9:58 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
didn't know that ESPN was being so petty about BYU. but you have to realize they are owned by ABC and are a huge part of the BSC fiasco. they never want a playoff system so they can keep everything controversial and have the "final" say on their shows. it's a joke. college football is a joke! plain and simple.
thinkaboutit | 9:58 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Thank you for the good word, from Who's insane??? I too have been to many games and have sworn to things that when I watched the replay, I clearly was wrong. It is easy to get riled up at the games and complain, but then when you take a good long look on the replay and see that the ball did travel some distance and was in the air, not merely dropped behind his back, then your perspective is quite educated and different. Give my best to Bob Uecker up in the cheap seats next time!
Pac10Cellar | 9:59 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
This was a good practice game for BYU. In December, they'll play the 5th place team in the Pac 10 ... again. This was a good warm-up for Pac10 5th place Oregon State. Not ... a very impressive win.
