They Didn't Storm the Field | 5:01 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I'm suprised BYU fan didn't storm the field. Isn't that their M/O?

I yelled so much at the TV due to the horrible non holding calls by these PAC-10 officials that I can hardly talk. That is why it is so difficult to beat the PAC-10 on the road. Washington was given every oppurtunity to win that game and still couldn't do it. The game should have never come down to that last call and touchdown. It just shows how much BYU dominated Washington even with the horrible defense. Fix the defense and BYU can't be touched.

Sorry, but that game wasn't this close? Go Cougs! Stay undefeated!
Emotion and Drama | 5:00 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The cougars continue to face the cornered Pac-10 coaches, with their high strung player pumped by the added emotional charge of the coaches job on the line. Not to take away from Locker, he's great and our defense was poorly prepared to face locker in the forth qtr. Why the predicatable 3 down linemen, when it hasn't worked for the previous three qtrs? Why not send in the JR. College all american Bernard? Why not THREE safties, one to cover the middle and take down recievers/ Locker.

Frankly, as the game progressed the cougar defense choked (or the coaching staff). The fianl BYU TD was scored too soon (3:13 on the clock) but then again the cougars have a habit of making this mistake in every other game,
Washington Ute | 5:02 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I listened to the last half of the fourth quarter and it sounded like a great game - one I would have enjoyed seeing. My buddy Steve (BYU alum) went and I am sure he will have nothing but good things to say about the cougars (he always does) at church tomorrow.

Good for BYU to get the win (beating a PAC-10 team with a blocked kick for the second time in a row). Good not only for the Y but also for the conference (too bad SDSU is getting jobbed by the refs in South Bend). I hope Utah can take care of UTEP tonight and we can have another week looking forward to two undefeated teams on November 22nd at RES (where I hope the Utes can get a fifth win in seven years).
fuifan | 5:02 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Good job cougars! The Pac-10 refs made terrible calls in this game-- several missed holding calls. Many were biased. At one point in the game I saw that byu had six penalties called on them for something like sixty-five yards, while UW only had like 2 for five yards! BYU should've scored a least one other TD, but fumbled it. We should've won by another TD, and the game probably wouldn't have been close. The Cougars made it past rough calls. Nice plays by the players.
Good job | 5:06 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
From a Ute fan, I say nice win. I didn't get to see the footage, but followed closely online. Sounds like the defense has some issues, but gotta give credit to a great player in Locker. Good luck against UCLA. This win will obviously leave a lot to be desired for the defense, but I actually worry about BYU's ground game against UCLA. Unless Tennessee turns out to be that weak, I was impressed by UCLA's defense.

Good luck, Cougs and way to find a way to win. Special teams is huge.

Get some revenge tonight, Utes!
Watch it | 5:03 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
If you watch the film 3 flags were all thrown at nearly the same time. So go blame 3 of your refs. On the 4th and 10 that Locker ran for the first down there was 2 holding calls that could have been called but werent. It is part of the game.
typical byu ignorance | 5:05 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
come on cougs, i am a fan with the rest of you all, but come on. You don't make that call at the end of the game. He celebrated with his team. That was very questionable. And before all you fans overreact like you always do I watched the game with many family members that played at the Y and they all agreed that the ref shouldn't have called that penalty.
Anti-PC Infidel | 5:06 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I'm glad that BYU won, of course, but our defense really kind of stunk up the field most of the game. Porous as porous can be. That's not going to win games all season. We almost gave it to Washington, a team that's really not that good. If the defense doesn't show up against UCLA, our offense is going to have to score 50 points for us to win.

Washington should be a top 2 team, they are way underrated and far better than michigan or even NIU. They would roll through any other conference. 1986 lavell edwards detmer norm mcmahon young blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Big Picture | 5:10 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Technically, Locker did throw the ball, which is a penalty. Personally, I think the refs were making a "make-up call" for the blatant, uncalled holding that led to Washington's big first down the play before. They just didn't think BYU would block the kick.
Anonymous | 5:10 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
is pac 10 supposed to be a better confrence than ours?
Ute fans | 5:10 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
When Utah beat a bad Michigan team last week by two points you were all claiming how great you are. BYU beats Washington and you all call it lucky. I see a pattern of great special teams plays. Last week most Cougar fans congratulated the Utes on their win. Try a little sportsmanship once and awhile Ute fans.
Shocked | 5:15 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I am stunned that so many people have come to complain about terrible PAC-10 officiating.

PAC-10 officials are the best around. If you need a botched call to beat Oklahoma or if you need someone to close his eyes on pass interference or forget that tackling a defensive end is holding or call offensive pass interference in the end of a close game, they're always with you.

Even if you are a terrible team, those great officials will keep you in it. Imagine only having to make a kick to get to overtime. How much help do you need.

As for having the PAC-10 reprimand one of these great officials, who could possibly be so confused. They work so hard to keep their teams games that they all should get pay raises.

I am so excited for the game at the Coliseum next week. The great officials will have those Buckeyes scratching their heads about all the non-calls.

I do feel a little sorry for the Huskies. Most teams would have taken total advantage of everything the officials gave them. But you cannot accuse those officials of not backing their team. What a great conference.
A win is a win | 5:17 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Sure the last call wasn't good. But yes BYU blocked the kick. If Unga hadn't fumbled then BYU would have won by 2 touchdowns. BYU's offense was dominant but the defense wasn't very good. They need to improve on that if they expect to win.
re ute fans | 5:16 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
well, Utah's win didn't come off of a blocked extra point.
Finally... | 5:19 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Finally the PAC-10 Refs make a bad call that goes against one of their own instead or the visiting team. They are so bad they can't even cheat correctly!!!

BYU has a top rated QB and offensve unit but the defense has to wake-up
Great Teams | 5:20 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Great teams find a way to win, period. If BYU gets beaten next week, at TCU, or at Utah, they are not a great team. However, they haven't lost in 12 games.

Need I repeat that- They haven't lost in 12 games.

They haven't lost in 12 games.

Every team finds a different way to win, some play to the level of their opponents and eak out wins, some blow out half of their opponents and then get blown out by UNLV.

In the end, what matters is WINS.

BYU hasn't lost in 12 games.

They just won their first non-conference road game in along time.

BYU Fans: Give your team a little credit and just enjoy the wins. We don't need to anticipate losses... We aren't UTAH.
Bryan | 5:23 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Washington is tough at home. They almost upset OSU last year. BYU still won with 2 scores cancelled by turnovers and the punt would have probably been blocked anyway.

BYU would have beaten by much more at home and they will win against UCLA!
Celebration | 5:23 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The official threw the flag when Locker threw the ball up in the air which IS an Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. But i think that his celebration with his teammates was classy and it was right. It was a big game for Washington and they almost tied it up. But Locker needed to just roll the ball out of his hand or just drop it then celebrate the right way with his teammates. Good job BYU. YOU GUYS WON!!! But please work on the defensive side of the ball!!!
Worried | 5:28 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
How many balls did Collie drop? Where was the defensive spy on Locker at the end of the game? We are lucky he is a not as good at passing as running. This game was so poorly officiated... most of the game against the Y with holding galore. I watched it with a retired division I ref who used to ref in the BIG 12 and he was appauled. Intentional grounding by Locker, he counted over a dozen holding non calls that Washington got away with and then that last horrible celebration call that finally went against Washington.

I'm glad BYU won but I personally don't think we are a #15 ranked team with this defense. Even if we beat a tough UCLA team and then run the MWC, I don't think we would get so lucky to get a "patsy Pitt" team to play in a bowl game and we'd end up getting treated like Hawaii and ran out of the stadium.
Canuck with no coverage :( | 5:29 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
A win is a win. Right now, nothing else matters. Does BYU definitely need to tune up a few things, yeah I think so.
Re: Great Teams | 5:32 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
How many games has BYU won in a row? Please say it again-you need repeat that!
BYU and todays Game | 5:36 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
First off, you BYU haters lets take a look at the last two years. Arizon (lost), Boston College (Lost), UCLA (Lost), Tulsa (Lost). BYU has started horribly the last two years and lost four games they should've won. Though today was not pretty, it is a step forward from the last two years (though I agree that the Defense needs to figure something out). However, they have come together as a team on both sides around the fourth game (WYO); so next week will be interesting.
Though I am a BYU fan, the win today did feel empty with the way it ended. I am on the side the call shouldn't have been called, and the teams and fans where cheated out of plays deciding the game not a call.
That said, everyone saying they wouldn't have blocked it or won just because of the call -- nobody will know maybe they would have, maybe they wouldn't have.
Let's just look forward to next week and hope the defense gells before then or it will be another nail bitter.
UW is just as good as Michigan this year, so be careful Utes, don't throw any mud yet.
Jeff | 5:38 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Washington would have lost in overtime anyway. But anybody on here who doesn't think there's a difference between a 35-yard extra point and a 20-yard extra point probably has never spent a lifetime watching college football. 35 yards is like a field goal. How many more field goals get blocked than extra points? Exactly. Seven extra points were made successfully before that one. So if you don't think backing up 15 yards has any effect, once again, you probably don't watch much football. The celebration call was horrendous. I can't even equivocate how horrendous the call was. If you penalize Locker for throwing the ball over his shoulder, in the future, you have to penalize EVERY touchdown scorer who doesn't graciously hand the ball to the ref. That's the precedent that was set today. Unsportsmanlike conduct was implemented to prevent teams from showing up opponents. Tell me how flipping the ball behind you is showing up the opponent. But most importantly, tell me what BYU would have done if the penalty had NOT been called. That's right, they would have done NOTHING. I think that more than anything else indicates how bogus of a call it was.
Chad | 5:39 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
The announcers were excellent! They pointed out the truth: BYU deserved to win that game. They played a solid game against a good Washington team. The final penalty was stupid, but it doesn't change the fact that BYU did the right things at the right time to win. Kudos to Washington for a well-fought contest! Both are a couple of classy teams that played an excellent game. The fool in all this is the referee.
AL | 5:39 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
You can't blame BYU if the ref's make a bad call. They won the game and nothing can be done about it, so YEWT fans stop whining. Be glad it was not at Utah 4th and 18 with Austin Collie all alone in the endzone. NIGHTMARE....NIGHTMARE....NIGHTMARE!!!!!
Long ways to prove nothing | 5:41 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
As a fan and grad of ASU in bubble Provo it is good to see BYU pull this one off, had they not won we would not get to hear all the byU fans talk about how they are BIG brother in the state of Utah, possibly true but fact remains they are barely better than the bottom of the barrel in the PAC-10. Pretty weak showing and undoubtedly all Cougars will cry foul when they don't get the respect they deserve but bottom line is they don't deserve respect because their win is such a statement to the true mediocrity of the MTN, I know everyone thinks I am hating but if BYU is really BCS material how do they not see through the fog of mediocrity that hangs over them. BYU is so bad on D that they really couldn't even stop a one dimensional attack. Their offense seemed to click but the proof is in the pudding a ONE POINT WIN over the bottom of the barrel. WEAK but we can't be surprised it is a sub par conference. But again nice win:)
ESPN | 5:42 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I just heard a big rant on ESPN about the celebration call and how BYU should drop in the polls (by all 3 commentators).

I for one am glad to see BYU win (barely is better than losing) mainly because BYU is hated even more than ND.

BYU really does not look like OK, USC or other top 10 teams. Hopefully they can fix some of the problems before UCLA. BYU usually gets better as the season goes on. However, they probably do not have the speed or depth of a USC.

Thanks for a win. Just keep winning. The polls will take care of themselves.
Re: Not bothered | 5:44 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Can we get the EXACT rule on Offsides, Holding and just for kicks, the EXACT explanation of 12 men in the huddle?

Thanks!
Interested Observer | 5:47 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I just love to read all the "objective comments" made by some of the "brightest-know-it alls" in the world. Wonderful insights concise, insightful remarks that appear to be made by those who have probably never done anything besides sit on the sidelines and dream.....you in fact might qualify as a ref.

A win is still a win and a loss a loss. Entertaing game. Thanks to those who actually played...!!!
Go BYU | 5:46 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
All of these ESPN commentators need to quit complaining and bringing BYU, a non BCS team, down. Who cares about the excessive celebration penalty, and whether it shouldve been called or not. Whether the ball was going to be kicked from the penalty spot or just a regular PAT for Washington, BYU's special teams was getting through that line to block the kick no matter where on the field the ball was kicked from...So ESPN quit complainin about excessive celebration being called...BYU blocked the kick, BYU won the game...GO BYU!! Rise and shout the Cougars are out!!!
Defense... | 5:47 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Yes...they had some problems today...but they were good enough to win. On the road no less. Each game they will improve. Watch for s great game next week by the defense. And a BYU WIN! This is a very young defense. Just like last years offense.

Go Cougars!
JD | 5:49 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Enough about the penalty. BYU was clearly a better team and deserved to win. That being said, what are you thinking on 4th and 10 and not putting a spy on Locker? How come everyone watching knew that the Huskies last touchdown would be a QB draw...except the Cougars. The D better improve by next week or it's bye bye BCS.

As a fan, I was ROBBED of an extra Overtime of great football!

That blind old ref owe me a refund!
Coug | 5:56 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Did anyone else see the ref run in and block the PAT? Neither did I. BYU DID!!! Quit whining Utes.
Anonymous | 5:55 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Here I am reading some of the comments and its pathetic. In every sport every game there will be questionable calls!! A win is a win, Congrats Cougs, ( I am Utes fan )but its not the end of the season. It is two games in!!! For BYU ppl saying "look at all these stupid comments from these utes fans" I am pretty sure all these negative comments havent been from Ute fans! You cant judge a team by a game in the very start of the season!! If BYU's defense doesnt start backing them up there with be no whole "we just beat a PAC-10 team" Pac-10 teams do not mean they are the best team in the US. It means they r judged, which means they can be beat! One last thing!!! Anyone can be beaten on any given day!!! Next time the coin might be flipped!! Stop arguing over a call, it is going to happen in every game! This game doesnt matter its how BYU comes out in the end.
Only one word | 5:56 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
...describes the last four games performances....WIN!!!!!!!!
NevadaCoug | 5:58 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Question: Was it a sign that #1 USC wasn't a very good team when, last year on September 29, they went into Washington and barely eeked out a 3 point win? I mean, two weeks earlier #10 Ohio State has beaten the same Washington team by 19. Then, a few weeks later, #10 Oregon beat them by 21. All of those games were played @ Washington, and the #1 ranked team had the tougher time of it. So what gives?

What it comes down to is a win is a win is a win. BYU made some mistakes, the D didn't play well, and they still managed to win.

And by the way, Bronco was interviewed on a national sports radio program and asked about the "Quest for Perfection." Not once did he say anything about an undefeated record. He talked about individual perfection and the idea that his team would have a chance to win every game they play this year. Just goes to show, most people railing against the "Quest for Perfection" don't understand what it really is.
Illinois Cougar | 5:59 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
If the BYU and Washington game today was in the sport of gymnastics, then all of the would, could, should might mean something. But, at the end of the day all that matters is the score!

I know it is fun to whine and belittle others in this forum but, get a life! BYU won. I don't care how close the games are, or if the defense fails to measure up. Moral victories and great statistics don't get you into the BCS, wins do.

And as for responding to haters, their only reason for posting is to pick, pick, pick.

UU | 5:59 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
I guess in the end a Double-U is a W...

Let's hope the Utes hold up at home against a tough UNLV team...
BYU- good but really not that go | 6:00 p.m. Sept. 6, 2008
Yeah, there were a ton of non call holding penalties. There could have been quite a few calls on BYU throughout the game.

But that happens. BYU has a good offense, terrible defense. But your schedule is so weak you should waltz into the Utah finale untouched.
