BYU football: Discontent swirling around Washington's Willingham
74 comments | Read story
Coach, Your program is about to get a big shot in the arm in the form of a huge win over the 15th ranked team in the nation. Don't put that for 'For Sale' sign up just yet.
Coach Ty, this is your lucky day. You see, any other ranked team would pound your pathetic Huskys, but not this ranked team. This ranked team does not win non-conference road games, period. They never have, never will and there is nothing you, I or anyone else can do about it.
Cougar Fans, don't despair... take advantage. Borrow a large sum of money and put it on the Huskys. Then get caught up on your over-due mortgage payments with the proceeds. You, like coach Willingham, will get to stay in your houses a little longer.
Lets Go Cougars!
Willingham will lose his job.
UW fans are irate and feel they have given him more than enough time to field a competitive team.
+3 for BYU, lock
+2 for BYU, near lock
-1 to +1, BYU has a VERY GOOD chance of winning
-2 for BYU, scary, probable loss
-3 for BYU, the Quest is over, move to goal #2, winning another MWC championship, a bowl win and a final Top 25 ranking
Locker can't match BYU's offense score for score. BYU doesn't need to shutdown Locker, they just need to slow him down. Bend but don't break. Washington's defense isn't good enough to shut down BYU's offense.
It could be a wild, high-scoring game, but as long as BYU protects the ball, BYU will chalk up a much need OOC road victory.
The Huskies have been backed into a corner by the string of losses under Coach W. Coaches and players feel the heat from the press and the fans. (One high profile Husky alumnus has even offered to set-up a $100,000 scholarship at the UW Law School if UW fires Willingham.)
So, the Huskies are going to EXTREMELY motivated to make a statement and try and save Coach W's job. In their minds a win against 15th ranked BYU will be just the ticket to (temporarily) take the heat off of their coaches. That's HUGE motivation!
THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS GAME FOR BYU!!! The players need to be mentally prepared to face this highly motivated Husky team, if they want to come away with a win. The Cougars will have to:
1. Execute, execute, execute;
2. Play error-free football;
3. Have a 150 yard rushing attack;
4. Play smash-mouth defense to stifle UW offense;
5. Not look past UW, to the UCLA game.
Accomplish these things, and the Cougars will come away with a very satisfying win in a difficult venue.
THIS BYU TEAM HAS THE ABILITY TO DO IT!!!
Thanks.
UW has raw talent and their coach has a long string of not being able to develop that talent into a winning team. Same results as at Notre Dame.
I completely agree that Washington is going to be up for this game. New year, first home game and they likely believe in the basic PAC-10 superiority over the rest of the universe. They likely look at BYU and their #15 rank is a cherry pick win so their confidence and expectation are going to be high.
Washington is still very undisciplined. Their defensive front-four is their strength, and after that the rest of their defense refused to play assignments against Oregon. BYU will score on this defense.
The question is our defenses ability to stop Locker. If we keep him in the pocket we win. He holds the ball too long. If he gets out of the pocket it could be like that Paul guy from Tulsa last year, but Washington isn't as high scoring.
Great game but more disciplined team wins. Should be BYU.
Go cougars!
If I were the defensive coordinator I would come after them, hard. I would blitz slightly more on the left side know that Hall has a history of getting wacked, and that BYU is still weak on the left tackle spot, now being manned by a red-shirt Freshman.
In blitzing a lot you are challenging the center, who calls out blocking assignments, and BYU has a new center.
I would go after them both and make BYU's O-line prove they can handle it. An aggressive pressure/blitz defense would be a real test.
I hope the Reynolds brothers are up to it.
Hey,Billy Red you need to get Direct tv which has a low priced sports package that includes the MTN.,CBS college sports and all the FOX sports channels. Get rid of DISH now.
real world team
ends their dream
Go Cougars
No turnovers = BYU 48 UW 17
-1 to -2 = BYU 32 UW 24
-3+ = upset...
I see BYU by 14.
That goes double for their HORRIBLE announcers!
BYU
Utah
TCU
New Mexico
Air Force (probably)
Wyoming (possibily)
Colorado State (probably not)
San Diego State (definitely not)
UNLV (are you kidding)
Will never give up my Dish!!
The picture quality and announcers may not be the best (actually, I've endured some pretty lousy ESPN announcers also), but I'd much rather go to a Saturday afternoon or evening game, than try to go to a Tue or Wed game and not get home until after midnight, then try to get something useful done the next day at work.
I hope UW wins in the waning seconds of the game tomorrow. (Your luck has to run out sometime). Let's hope the Y can keep their streak of futility of non conference road games alive! I know you can do it!
1985- BYU (ranked #16) defeats Washington (unranked) 31-3 in Provo.
1986- Washington (ranked #7) defeats BYU (ranked #11) 52-21 in Seattle
*This one was ugly as the score was 42-7 at halftime in Husky Stadium
1996- Washington (unranked)defeats BYU (ranked #14) 29-17 in Seattle
*BYU's only loss of the 14-1 season and would later go on and beat K-State in the Cotton Bowl.
1997- Washington (ranked #4 AP Poll) defeats BYU (ranked #19) in Provo 42-20
1998- Washington (ranked #9) defeats BYU (unranked) 20-10 in Seattle
1999-BYU(unranked)defeats Washington (unranked)35-28 in Provo
*BYU beat Washington on a touchdown from Feterik to Hall in the last two minutes of the game
BYU has great potential this season but if they drop this game they won't get (or deserve) a BCS bowl bid. Their mistakes last week show me they haven't brought all of their confidence or continuity from last season.
One thing's for certain though, despite the outcome of this game there will be a grundle of BYU die-hards talking about Washington like they are top of the pac-10 for the rest of the season. :) Good luck cougs!
LaVell did ignore some off-the-field stuff, mostly honor code violations that wouldn't have even raised on eyebrow at any other school, but LaVell never tolerated players who got in trouble with the law.
Mendenhall is well respected as much because of his zero tollerance policies as he is for his win/loss record. Key starters have been held out of ball games because of Bronco's strict adherence to team rules. Fui didn't play last week, not because he was injured, not because he was ineligible, not because he had an honor code violation, he didn't play because he didn't practice, because he had some catching up to do in his academic work which he didn't complete until Friday before the game.
until last season.
Washington's dominance in Seattle is about to end. Husky fans have one day left to enjoy it.
You got all your historical facts right but I think the broad consensus on the West Coast (which I agree with) is this Washington team under Willingham is not even close to as good as Washington teams in the 80's or 90's. The Husky teams of the last few years have exhibited no heart and Willingham haas shown no ability to rally the troops when the chips are down (ask any ND fan). BYU wins by 7+.
