"The concern I have - here is a woman whose only experince has been 4 years on a city council - 4 years as a mayor - both of a town the size of Hurricane Utah - and 2 years as governor - of the 47th least populated state. If by some extreme chance she becomes vice president and Senator McCain dies - do I want this person to be the leader of the free world? My mind can't seem to wrap around this and accept this as the best choice for this country.

You've a very small mind, then..

If you were to apply the same experience standard to your candidate, B. Hussein Obama, you'd likely lose your mind. Being a "community organizer" or state Senator is peanuts by comparison. And Osama's time as a US Senator was spent mostly campaigning for president.
dear oh please | 10:29 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
If Palin is a mistake because she has only been governor for 19 months - what does that say about Obamas lack of experience. The VP can learn on the job - the president can't.
Re: Re:observer is ignorant | 10:32 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Sarah's husband having a DUI two decades ago isn't relevant either. And you are welcome, I'm glad that me sharing could help you out.

Ummmm.... abstinance does work every single time. The problem is when teens don't follow the advice to practice absintance. Common sense stuff here.
Judi | 11:06 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
The point here is that Palin lied to the American people. There are other more relevant issues coming out about her that are more important: her membership in AIF, the Alaskan Independent party advocating succession from the Union. Her coverups concerning her approval of The Bridge to Nowhere, her pursuit of millions of dollars in earmarks for Alaska, on and on.

See seems like a strange fish and I don't trust her, bottom line.
WHO'S going to be the VP? | 11:06 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Give me a break. WHO'S being looked at as the VP? Sarah Palin, or her husband, or her 17 year old daughter?

That's right, Sarah Palin.

What the Democrats are trying to do is to blame her husband's problems and her daughter's problems on Sarah Palin.

What a bunch of bull!

Anyone with a brain knows that each human being makes their own decisions. We're not talking about a parent being responsible to brush their 3 year old's teeth. That IS something that a very young human being doesn't get to choose for themselves. But an adult man and even a 17 year girl gets to make their OWN choices and NO ONE else can be held accountable for them!

Doesn't it sound just the tiniest bit hypocrytical that Dems by and large shout "freedom of choice for everyone in everything!" until that rally cry doesn't work to their advantage?

To every single Democrat out there reading this, you OUGHT to be embarrassed that your party is even raising the DUIs and teen pregnancy as a failure of Sarah Palin's character.

When it's proven that SARAH PALIN has failed, THEN you can attack her character.

Barack Obama supports abortion because he "wouldn't want his daughters punished with a baby" for their mistake, whereas Palin's daughter is owning up to it and taking responsibility. I see nothing wrong here. All parents know that you can do your best to teach your kids but that ultimately, they will make mistakes. She's not saying she supports her daughter going out and having pre-marital sex, she's saying that her daughter is taking responsibility and that her family stands together.

To any Dem who's ever had a DUI or got pregnant out of wedlock as a teen, or caused a teenager to get pregnant out of wedlock, I suuuuuure hope that you're not involved in trying to assasinate Sarah Palin's character.

Otherwise, they call your kind hypocrits.

Remember that one guy who said something like "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"....

(BTW, the reason this comment is directed at the Dems is because YOU guys are primarily the ones doing the mud-slinging.)

Ohhhh brother. Nope, no politically motivated, biased judgement here.
Paperboy | 11:37 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
A father who drinks and then makes the conscious decision to drive and put the life of others in jeopardy? A teenage daughter engaging in active sexual relations and gets pregnant? A mom who decides to go back to work a couple days after giving birth to her fifth child, forgoing maternity leave that would foster bonding with her newborn child? A mother who decides to grab for the ultimate brass ring and invite the world's scrutiny of her young family's painful and private affairs? I guess this is what the Republicans mean when they talk about "traditional values."
Anonymous | 11:43 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Track, Willow, Piper, Bristol, and Trig.. Need we say more? How much more hilarity can the Republican Party and its choice for President and Vice Presidential choice be? To think this election was to be one of the least intersting ones, oh how moments have changed. BTW - Any chance there be a way to read a Hurricane eliminating the start to the convention into any of this topic? LOL

John Edwards, an ADULT man, no, an ADULT MARRIED man, no, no, an ADULT MARRIED MAN with a WIFE WHO HAS CANCER has SEX with another woman and Dems shout "he's only human, forgive him, forgive him!"

Sarah Palin's husband has 2 DUIs from over 10 years ago and her teenage daughter sneaks around behind mom's back and gets pregnant and what do you hear from Dems?

"DESTROY!!!"

Who?

Mr. Palin? Daughter Palin?

No.

Sarah Palin.

How absolutely freakin' 2-faced and ridiculous is that?!?!

How can Dems not see that their party, as a whole, generally screams for love and mercy but refuses to give it when the rubber needs to hit the road?

Heck, they can't even vent their anger at the right people let alone grant the forgiveness they demand for one of their own.

Any Dems flat-out embarrassed yet?

If not, what will it take?

Yes.

I'll take ANY person willing to stand up and say "if you're not married, don't have sex", not just Sarah Palin.

It's what my wife and I are teaching our kids.

It amazes me that all these people are posting how Sarah Palin needs to stay home and take care of business. What if the situation were the same, but a man as the V.P. candidate? Apparently, we have made less progress than we thought we had. "Sure, we can elect a woman to be president (or V.P.) as long as she has no children under 10, and no handicapped kids neither. And no pregnant daughters. If her husband does a little fooling around, though, that is O.K." Sheesh.

Where is the church lady on the Democratic side
to say she has 'sinned'? There is irony to
this tale that is being written about by the
Demo's....Why can't they leave the poor girl
alone? How does her descision to be a mother,
to keep the baby, and to marry the father, make
her a bad person in any shape or form? What if
she would have ended the pregnancy via an abortion,
then she would have more stature in Democratic
eyes? Give me a break...As a dad of two girls,
she needs love and support....

No...this is not laughable. Imagine if the shoe were on the other political foot...would Hannity and Limbaugh be crowing about morality in government and the woeful absence of same in the Democratic Party?
Of course they would.
Palin will soon be entered onto a roll-call of those undone from political careers by being human. Such as Thomas Eagleton. A fine senator who was hounded from his VP candidacy in '72 due to treatments for mental health.
If Kerry can get savaged for "not bleeding enough" as a decorated Vietnam Vet...Palin's status as a target (of self-inflicted wounds) is hardly at odds with what conservative voices cried for four years ago.

Are you kidding me? A daughter makes a mistake and it disqualifies her as VP? Her husband has a DUI from 20 years ago and that disqualifies her as VP? Holy Obama admitted to the use of drugs but because it was when he was younger, they didn't make that much of the issue. Yet, he is still qualified to be Pres. He associates with the likes of William Ares, an admitted terrorist and anti-american, and this does not disqualify him? You can't choose your daughter, nor how she acts, but you can choose your friends and who you associate with. Where does the hypocrisy end?
brer | 12:32 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Obama was gracious when, responding to the news of the pregnancy of Palins daughter, said "It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance or her potential as a VP."

But he was wrong. It has relevance in so many ways.

Will Palin veto legislation supporting women's rights for prenatal care or sex education, besides abstinence based? Will she attempt to force her opinions on children who don't have the family support that her daughter presumably has or give women the option to have birth control if they need it? Will she support education and food programs for those children.
Ive never seen anyone with ambition like Palinssomeone who would throw her daughter to the wolves in the press just to further her own career. Surely she knew that the press would have her child on the front page of every paper. If she didnt know that, then she had no business stepping onto the national stage!
And why are all the conservative family values folks jumping up and down for joy. Have they forgotten what they stand for?
Let's hope Palin has a whole VILLAGE to take care of her children, because they are really going to need it.

Dear Grandfather - I know just how you feel since we now have the anti-privacy anti-abortionist, anti-birth control, anti-sex Right Wing Republicans who want to step right in the middle of my doctors appointments tell me that this pregnancy is a "private matter"!

Talk about hypocrisy!!

If this were Obama or Biden's teenage daughter, the GOP would CRUCIFY them in the press!

I commented this story earlier. But then on the way to my flight out of SLC I saw the print version of today's paper and the "Stunning Disclosers" was the lead headline.

Let me be perfectly clear. The DN ought to back off. I am totally incensed that the DN would amplify the ridiculous attacks on the best politician we have seen in years and dignify the attacks with such a scurrilous headline.

The DN may be miffed that Mitt didn't get the nod, but playing into the hands of those who want to destroy the fabric of our constitutional republic -- with these nonstop outrageous, irrelevant, attacks -- is totally irresponsible.

What in the devil is the DN editor thinking? You are playing directly into the hands of the modern day king men.

All you Palin defeders are missing the whole point on this issue. This person has it right:

Observer | 8:25 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
As they say.....the hits just keep on comin'! We have an unqualified ex beauty queen, ex sportscaster governor with less than 2 years experience and a journalism degree, who's being investigated for ethics violations(emails & phone calls coming out shortly), who was a member of the Alaska Independent Party that wants to secede from the US, who has a husband with a DUI record, and who has a 17 year old unwed pregnant daughter. And this is the best that John McCain could come up with for his vp selection. Reality is stranger than fiction.

I could care less that teens get pregnant but its not the issue, is the collective whole about Palin that is the issue. She is a horrible choice and this reflects in a bad way on both McCain & Palin and its hurting the republican party.
Money-G | 1:08 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Wow, it's facinating that Palin's life is unraveling before our very eyes. It is also laughable how the GOP strategist are backpelding in an effort to deflect judgment calls from McCain naming Palin as his running mate. One post even said that the problems in Palin's life are that of any family. That maybe true and I'm not casting the firststone at her family as one post put it. However, you've got to admit that the first words out of Palin's mouth is that her daughter is about to find out what being a parent is all about. How about my daughter was wrong and I don't condone having sex before marriage and then offer the love and support she undoubtedly will need. Everyone is saying that Palin would surround herself with experienced people if she were called to be the next president, but when Obama would obviously do the same thing he is not qualified because of his lack of experience and Palin is. Sounds kinda of fishy to me. Let's face it MaCain blew it with his choice which definitely speaks towards his judgement for the highest office in the land.

Most families have problems and challenges that they must cope with, and criticizing one another is unproductive, but when there are difficult problems to deal with, it is the parent's responsibility to do just that. Sarah Palin's family has some of those very situations, a special needs child really needs parents who can dedicate a greater amount of time to the education and welfair of this child, and a very young pregnant daughter will also most likely be in need of extra time and help (whether she marries the equally young father or not). Our country is likewise in need of leaders who can dedicate their utmost attention to both national and international challenges. Either Sarah Palin's family, or our nation, will be forced to make great sacrifices should she remain as the vice-presidential running mate. Mrs. Palin, should do both her family, and the nation the honor of withdrawing her name from the ticket, and let John McCain move forward without these very relevant concerns.
CougarKeith | 1:18 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I thought kids of candidates were "Off Limits", and here are the Liberals attacking the daughter of Palin? They trumpet the working mother, and here they are attacking Palin for not being able to have time for her children and be the VP? Suddenly the Democratic Party sounds like the party who wants all women to stay at home and raise their families? What is this all about? The Gay & Lesbian rights trumpeting party is shunning a working CAREER GOVERNOR WOMAN??? I don't get it at all? Then the peace loving Liberal Democrats march on the GOP convention and a branch of them breaks windows and breaks into stores and that is a peaceful march? "White Folks Greed Runs A World In Need!" Barack Obama... Obama visits Iraq and Germany and he doesn't even visit our injured soldiers because he can't bring in the cameras. WAKE UP AMERICA! This kid isn't aborting, she is getting married, she is keeping the baby, she is facing the "Consequences" and being the adult. If she lent into Obama's theories she would abort the baby and continue to have unmarried sex! Give me a break!!!
Rich | 1:18 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Palin should resign because her values do not reflect those of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Democratic Party, the National Organization of Women, and Planned Parenthood. She does not believe that abortion should be used to "make problems go away," such as the birth of her mentally challenged baby, or the upcoming birth of her first grandchild. Critics of conservatives have rightly pointed out that Palin cannot do a good job in the work force if she has children at home and that she is unsuitable for public office if she is unable to ensure that her daughter is on birth control. Palin also is unsuitable for public office because she presents a poor example of a conservative woman, who should not be knowledgeable about public issues, such as energy production, and should not be placed in a position where she could publicly humiliate an older patriarch, such as Joe Biden. As the truth becomes known, it will also become evident that Palin used her office as governor to fire an underling who refused to fire a governmental employee who had threatened the life of her father. She should have let governmental bureaucrats below her do their jobs. ;)
CougarKeith | 1:23 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Besides....... Barack Obama is the son of a 18 year old SINGLE MOTHER who gave birth out of wedlock to a minority male in the VERY BIAS and Racist decades, and Nothing has been said about that? Is it a big deal, NO, but Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant and planning to marry and it's a MAJOR SCANDLE! GROW UP AMERICA, talk about PARTIAL JUDGING! This election is so full of Media Partisanship it makes me sick!

Deseret News and other news agencies should ignore this ridiculous story. Palin's daughter has nothing to do with the presidential race. He/She without sin cast the first stone.
magnus | 2:13 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
This argument is funny and sad.

I hear alot of bitter liberals holding up Bristol Palin like a witch in Salem crying out against abstinance only sex ed as if that was what this situation is all about. What makes your agenda any different than theirs? It's all about forcing people to live and learn "my" way in the end.

Parents should be teaching their children sex ed, not the government, not the schools. I think the fact that republicans have pushed this agenda to the tune of $1 billion is a demonstration of arrogance, hypocricy, and foolishness.

But none of that really matters because this story isn't about abstinence only education, and saying that is what this is all about it like saying WWII was all about the Jews. This story is about Sarah Palins family life and personal values.

So what does it teach us? That the Palins still believe in traditional values. That even though their daughter has made a mistake in their eyes they still love her and that they have instilled values in her that have led her to keep her child and marry the father of the child.

I like her more now.

"I could care less that teens get pregnant but its not the issue, is the collective whole about Palin that is the issue. She is a horrible choice and this reflects in a bad way on both McCain & Palin and its hurting the republican party."

It must have been a good pick because the liberal Democrats are so upset and railing so hard about it.

Their own candidate, B. Hussien Obama was reportedly born out of wedlock and has way less experience than Palin.

He's never run anything of significance and has little or no foreign experience. He even had to make a trip to the mid east and Europe to make it look like he had. Maybe Palin should make such a trip. She'd outshine Obama and Brittany combined.
Poll Watcher | 2:50 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I find it interesting that only one major poll has Obama statistically ahead of McCain. The liberal, hypocritical criticisms of Palin should erase even that slim lead when people realize the truth. And what is the truth?

-That Palin has more executive experience than Obama, Biden and even McCain.

-That if we are concerned about the lack of national experience by a vice-presidential candidate, how much more should we be concerned about the lack of national and international experience of a presidential candidate.

-That Palin walks the talk that abortion is wrong, while Obama publicly speaks about how important it is to reduce the number of abortions, he then says if he found himself in the same situation as Palin, he wouldn't "punish" his son or daughter with a child.

-That Palin is a normal American with a normal, working American husband, and normal children, who are likely to make mistakes.

-That Palin deals with problems, even in her family, by making the right decision.

-That the liberal media, such as CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC and the New York Times will criticize the children of a conservative while protecting children of liberals.

We Americans are not stupid!

"Anonymous" when I said "I have only one thing to ask the Republican's on this post: Is Sarah Palin the person you want standing up to support the Republican Platform that calls for Abstinence Only Sex Education and proclaiming that it works to reduce teen pregnancy?"

You said "I'll take ANY person willing to stand up and say "if you're not married, don't have sex", not just Sarah Palin.

So you are saying that the spokesperson for "Abstinence only sex ed" is someone who had a child 8 months after getting married and who was such a good teacher of the principle of abstinence that her daughter repeated her pregnancy before marriage.

I ask you this: Is Srah Palin the most qualified Republican Woman (leaving out the guys) to be president in the event of McCain's untimely demise?

Is she really the best pick over Carly Fiorina (former CEO of HP) or Kay Bailey Hutchison (former State Treasurer of Texas and current Senior Senator from Texas) or Christine Todd Whitman (former Governor of NJ and Head of the EPA) or Jodi Rell (Governor of Connecticut for the last 4 years)

Is she really the best?
David | 2:55 p.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Palin is opposed to EXPLICIT sex education. That does not mean that her daughter did not receive sex-education, a typical requirement, in health. I know a young woman that got pregnant the semester AFTER explicit sex-education. Clearly that didn't work. I find it odd that such a big deal is made of sex ed when math and reading scores (the primary reason for education) is bottoming out.
