McCain has made a very troubling appointment and it's not an auspicious start to a presidency.

I wish the Palins well but I think she should resign as quickly as possible to make this problem go away.
She's the mother | 12:16 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
So, Sarah Palin is the mother of her fifth child. That's good to know. That means she risked the life of a Down's syndrome baby by flying back and forth to Texas in what she thought was the last month of her pregnancy. She's 44, with an at-risk pregnancy, and decided to fly home with leaking amniotic fluid.
At least her judgment is no worse than McCain's.

It would seem that the investigative reporting wing of the media, freshly awakened after an eighteen month snooze as they studiously ignored the socialist background and leanings of Senator Obama now rejoice at the prospect of fresh Republican meat to feed upon.

The ink is still wet on her signature as McCain's VP pick and already the headlines scream of "Stunning Palin Disclosures". McCain's judgmental skills unfortunately become suspect in light of the baggage she brings. In his exuberance to bring a woman on the ticket he either failed to vet her properly or ignored the reports. Like it or not many voters will equate her daughters pregnancy with lax parenting and moral guidance in spite of Obama's call to keep children "off limits". They will wonder if the governor has and will successfully balance family and political life and how she can handle the challenges of a special needs infant with the stress and long hours she's signed up for.

Palin is killing not only McCain but also the republican party. McCain is an idiot anyway so in a way its a good thing. So far, most of the things we are learning about Palin are not good things and thus McCains gamble on picking an unknown is back firing big time. For them to try and say "that many families have these problems" is a cop out and its not taking the responsibility for their mistakes. Problems like teen sex and getting pregnant, drunk driving et all. Now Palin has a lawyer to fight the other problems....what a bad choice for VP McCain!

The media will probably eventually also highlight the fact that Sarah Palin has made political enemies even within her own party in the alaska State legislature (e.g. Senate President Lyda Green). Also to eventually come out is how close and privy her husband Todd has been in the decisions, meetings, and correspondence of the governor's office (e.g being cc'd on confidential government e-mail), especially those involving the Alaska oil and gas industry.

Brian, give up your AM radio paranoia, please. Maybe there was nothing to report!

Obama's response was classy. He looks better all the time.

Just imagine if this had been one of Obama's daughters. The right-wing, family values crowd would have crucified them.

With a pregnant teen and a newborn with Down's Syndrome, it sounds like Mom is needed elsewhere. How can she campaign across the country, take the intense policy crash-course she so desperately needs, and be there for her family?

Grandfather | 2:52 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
This is so strange-
Democrats telling me about pre-natal care and the correct age of a birth mother?
I thought partial birth abortion was the extent of their knowledge concerning pre-natal care?
Reminds me of the fox telling us the hen house is safe under his watchful GAZE.
Sheeeesh.

These types of things happen in homes throughout the entire country including in Utah. What is admirable to me is that the parents are supportive and are expressing unconditional love for their child at a very difficult time in her life. I saw first hand parents in the church who almost disowned their children who were pregnant and unmarried. Please don't point fingers at this family. They are showing unconditional love and support.
Evangelical lead | 4:09 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
The Mormon Republicans curse Obama for attending Rev Wrights church because of Wright's 'damning of America' but embrace a woman who sits in the pews of a church which on a regular basis condemns Mormons to hell - always has and no doubt always will. Go figure!

Instead of the rush to jump on the bandwagon with McCain and Palin Mormons would do well to take a deep breath and a long look before following the 'evangelical' lead this time.

Four out of the five posts so far are completely overeacting. I decided not to vote for McCain a long time ago and I don't like Obama either. However, these Palin details were being intentionally disclosed so they wouldn't get twisted into lies. I personally really don't see what is the big deal. It sounds like these are all issues the Palin's have already dealt with internally. Look into past presidents and you'll see real judgement problems. Clinton was/is a rapist for crying out loud. Bush (43) put together one of the most dishonest manipulative cabinets since Harding. Each of those guys was a worse choice than Palin (except Powell). And Reagan probably wasn't medically fit to be president most of his last term and that is one of those things that really should have been "vetted" or made known to the voters at the time. Anyway, this seems to be a matter of "spin" and too many of you seem to be bitter of have an agenda.
David | 4:36 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Children make their own personal choice no matter how good the parents. Obama came from a young mother and he managed to turn out just fine. As for his mother, she managed a PhD. Would it really have been better for Palin's daughter to have quietly aborted the fetus so that this gossip would never have made the newspaper? The answer seems a resounding yes, but oddly from Conservative Christians. No wonder I don't accept your religion...the pews are filled with hypocrites.
Larry | 4:44 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Have mercy on them all. I hope you are never judged as harshly as you are judging others. It would be wise for all who intend to comment on this story that you reflect upon John 8:7 where the Lord invited those who were without sin to be the first to cast a stone. This has nothing to do with McCain's judgement or Palin's fitness as a candidate. It is in fact life and they are doing what is right.
Let's not forget | 4:47 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Before everyone throws the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak, let's not forget that every family has it's blemishes, regardless of political party. Al Gore's son Albert Jr., was arrested twice for driving under the influence- of marijuana- and reckless driving in those incidents at over 110 mph. Yet somehow nobody implied that Albert Jr.'s poor judgment disqualified his father from holding publilc office as the VP. Bill Clinton's brother had legal woes, and Jummy Carter had a chronically drunk embarassment for a brother. Yet these men were elected President. To those who would throw out Palin because her daughter made a mistake and is doing the honorable thinkg in choosing to raise the baby, I hope you never have teen children, because he who casts the first stones...
Wake Up People | 4:51 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Unless your perfect why jump on someone elses problems. We all have some sort of problem or more in our lives. The only perfect person whom walked the earth was crucified going on 2000 years ago. I also believed he called people like us hipocrits. At least the one thing that I can agree with Mr. Obama on is leave Govornor Palin's family alone and keep them off limits. That is the way it should be. The campaign is about the canidates, not the families.
Anonymous | 5:15 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Why would evangelicals be upset about a teen pregnancy? Teen pregnancy is very common in religulous circles.
Where's your compassion? | 5:26 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Will all the perfect families please rise! Oh heavens; you mean other than those who have posted here, there aren't any perfect families?

First of all folks, don't let these "life experiences" that happen to a lot of good people, taint your judgement - don't play into the media. Secondly, don't you think 20 years is long enough that we should forgive and forget her husband's DUI? And thirdly, why is a pregnant daughter an automatic license for condemnation of her parents?
Regarding the termination of a state employee, let it play out. She's a bright enough woman, that I rather doubt there was a personal motivation.

Even though Obama stated that families and "especially children" are off-limits, you watch, as unimportant as these issues are to her qualifications and selection, the liberals and the media won't let it rest.

Palin has more experience than Obama and he wants to be President. So be careful where you take this democrats. You won't be able to use the race card to push um back once it all starts.

Palin has over a 90% approval rating in Alaska. You won't find that anywhere else.
Bobby Jones | 5:44 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
The fact that mom being governor letting her 24 yo soon to be son in law off the hook for statutory rape should disqualify her. She should have known who her underage daughter was dating. And if she knew, she was complicit with her baby getting pregnant.

The drunk driving incident with her hubby was two decades ago. Seems like he has grown up a bit IF that is the best the mud slingers can find.
to Bad Decision | 5:55 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I totally agree with your posting. I was shocked when McCain picked Palin over Mitt Romney or any of a dozen other more qualified Republicans (Condaleza Rice, for example).

Sarah Palin wasn't vetted, that's clear. I just don't believe McCain's savvy Washington pros would have chosen to bring this scandal into the campaign. It makes McCain look ridiculous.

I was going to vote for McCain because I am mostly conservative in my views, but now I think McCain is nuts and can't be trusted to make wise and conservative decisions.
Utah Resident | 5:59 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Very poor judgement, Mr McCain, you have just thrown the election.
judging the family | 6:05 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Parents whose children have not made mistakes have not lived long enough. If we disqualify people from service because their children are less than perfect, we disqualify nearly all of our great leaders. I'm less interested in whether their children make mistakes than how they handle the situation when they do.

As for an offense 20 years ago...a lot changes in 20 years.

I don't think Palin was the best choice for VP, but it's not because of her family.

And it's not Palin who is killing the Republican Party. It's the Republican elected officials' lack of vision, their lack of creativity, their inability to work with the other side, their lack of courage to make hard, right, inspiring, challenging decisions and carry them out. Coincidentally, that's the same thing that is killing the Democratic Party.

The Republicans had two moments in history recently where they could have changed the world-- when they held the presidency and both houses, and right after 9/11 when President Bush had 90% approval rating across the world. In both cases they blew it. They might have again blown it with Palin, but not because of her family.
J in Iowa | 6:11 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
With the selection of Palin as VP, I am left wondering what are they thinking!!! While I admit I know nothing about her except what I read, how will this women balance her life as a parent and VP? It is hard enough with a regular job. Can't imagine how it would be easier as a VP.
rightascension | 6:14 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
How old is this boyfriend? Was he in Juneau? or Wasilla? That point is remarkably vague in the reports.
Who Cares? | 6:20 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
By the looks of the above remarks, the Seminar Bloggers are alive a well. To you all, BACK OFF and SHUT UP!. If any of you have had children then you know they do stupid things, along with stupid husbands. Does that take away from her ability to lead and create change? Maybe it is the impetus to create change. Obama has said to BACK OFF and I agree with him on this one. Now to think that she may destroy the life of her child, think again, her husband has become a doting, caring, loving husband that has and will support her to no end.

Now, that said, who would you pick? An insider? Well that is just what B. Hussein O. did with Biden, after saying that he was "Change You Can Believe In". What a crock!!!! B. Hussein O. is nothing more that business as usual and is more and more ARROGANT than one could ever imagine.
ChainSawHarry | 6:31 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Sounds like the whole Utah Democrat party is ginnin up on this lady. The foregoing comments reveal a distinctive odor exposing liberal narrow minded perspectives. These comments are not shared with any of MY conservative friends and acquaintances. We may have to have DNA testing on those who wish to add their comments here to verify that they are indeed Democrats. I feel Gov Palin is a great choice.
TexasDem | 6:38 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
There is a old saying-The first kid can come anytime the second takes 9 months.Interesting to note Palin is strong on the abstinence to sex issue in Alaska.Apparently her daughter does not practice what her mother preaches. After all that,so what? Should be a non issue, just dont vote for Mac.
David | 6:41 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
John Edwards allegedly fathered a child outside of wedlock, well he was married but not to the mother of that child and his wife was just diagnosed with breast cancer...but I digress. Out of wedlock pregnancies occur, even in the best of families just like drug issues (Al Gore) can plague good families.

More important to ask is who will be able to discuss issues with Putin. Based on his recent tiger hunt, I would have to write that Palin would be able to play good 'ole boy far better than even Obama and he is running for President.
the question | 6:47 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
It comes down to this question: is she qualified to be vp? The voters will let us know.

Obviously, she is a fast climber. 80% of the voters in her state like her, but that was before these latest two scandals. She has no experience in foreign affairs and would have to rely on "experts" in the cabinet (think Rove, Cheney, and you get goose bumps). She really has no experience, less than two years, as an administrator.

Now we discover that she said YES to McCain though she knew that the daughter was pg and would soon be the attention of the media. Palin could not resist the glory of running for vp, she did not know she was underqualified at any speed. She is all giggles, shouts, and sureness: as we say, she doesn't know what she doesn't know.

McCain passed up qualified people to select her? Seriously? Really? How about the female senator from Maine who is very well qualified and does not have children to watch every day.

Palin is out of her league, and McCain showed very poor judgement.

To vote gop this year is to admit that you hate America and her future.
sweetie | 6:56 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Sweetie, you can't resign fast enough. Do it now, before the convention breaks. Please...

this albatross hands the election to the democrats.

(Yes, how old is the boyfriend, the father of the child? "Levi"? How many Levis are there in this world... in Alaska...???? Is he older, much older than her? If so, where was mom???????)
Andy | 7:00 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Trying to scare people with "Hussein" Obama is wrong. We can't choose our name, parents choose that. I'm not sure I'll vote for Obama or McCain, but I don't buy this "muslim terrorist" nonsense, in fact I find it offensive to my intelligence: the man is a US Senator, not a terrorist.

Stop trying to scare people, you're just making want to vote for Obama because it looks like there's no positive argument for McCain.

(PS. How nuts is this Palin story?)
DeepintheHeart | 7:08 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Thomas B Smith said "Palin is killing not only McCain but also the republican party. McCain is an idiot anyway so in a way its a good thing." You know, for a minute there, I thought he was expressing concern for the GOP. Opps. Why would a Liberal Democrat do that?
Dan | 7:11 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Here we go - the biased media jackels have painted Palin as a harpy who threatens us all...and, by extension, her family also demonstrates a certain inability to measure up. Similar swill is thrown at virtually all Republican or conservative candidates for office...as if the media represents the majority of Americans. Meanwhile the Dems, to a man or woman, are given free passes when they show similar behavior. Of course the "ignorant masses" here in fly over country are not supposed to be smart enough to notice the biased reporting.

I think the media senses that their "walking on water candidate" Obama's chances of a November victory are rapidly slipping away.
rfj | 7:20 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
The fact that Palin's daughter has chosen to do the right thing in her circumstances is certainly in stark contract to Obama's statement that if his daughter made a mistake he wouldn't want to "punish" her with a baby.
Big Tai from Midvale | 7:23 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Sarah Palin is going to be the next Vice President of the United States, and there is nothing any of you can do about it.

The best man for the job was a woman.
Anonymous | 7:35 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
"Palin has over a 90% approval rating in Alaska. You won't find that anywhere else."

You might want to check that. First of all, no one, and I mean NO ONE has claimed she has a 90% approval rate. They have quoted a 70-80% approval rating but that has been plummeting in the last three months of Troopergate.

And in a recent poll, 87% of Alaskans believed she lied about Troopergate (and she did; she is on record as saying she exerted no influence, and no one did on her behalf, then a recorded call turned up - suddenly she says she may have).

She claims to be about reforms: lets look at her record of procuring $40 million in Federal earmarks (pork barrel spending) for a 7,000 pop. village.

And finally, she claims to have told Congress "no way" on the Bridge to Nowhere. But she campaigned, and won as governor campaigning FOR IT. She only changed her tune when the national flak hit the fan.

There are many more reason to distrust the skills of Sarah Palin, than her parenting or personal life.

Keep the eye on her 1) record and 2) her qualifications.
Anonymous | 7:44 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Obama is slightly less socialist than Sarah Palin's state of Alaska which hands every single Alaskan citizen their annual share of the oil revenues.
Oh the irony of it all ! | 7:51 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Wow! it is really funny watching the conservatives on these boards trip over themselves calling for compassion and to with hold judgment. I agree that her daughters pregnancy and her down syndrome baby are not relevant to the conversation but it is funny watching you all chock on your own words. not so fun now that the shoe is o0n the other foot. Maybe you could learn soemthing from Obama's comments, but I doubt it, to hard a bill to swallow.
Yellow Journalism at its finest! | 7:57 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
With a headline like that you'd think Palin had committed adultery or murder. But no, it's typical family stuff that happens in this day and age. Twenty years ago her husband made a bad judgement call and drove after drinking and got caught. I bet there are many reading this who have driven with alcohol in their system. But it's more fun to judge others no doubt. In this age of sexual permissiveness I'm amazed that a reporter would have the chutzpah to refer to her daughter's pregnancy out of wedlock as a "stunning disclosure." I mean, McCain's daughter is gay--let's hold McCain accountable for that, shall we? In the end, none of these revelations have any bearing on Palin's competency to act in the role as McCain's VP. Let it go already and let's focus on issues, not personal smears and attacks.
Lukesw | 8:00 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I like Palin A LOT! Those who cast stones should think twice. There is a whole bunch of STUNNING FACTS about Barack and company that are just waiting for some Swift Boating.

And those who are swayed by the media Borking of Palin need to wake up to the arrogance and hypocrisy of the media, including, sadly in this case, the DN. The drivers of the media are seeking to destroy that which threatens them and their communistic/ socialistic agenda.

The DN should be ashamed for dignifying and amplifying the Borking spin with the headline of "Stunning Disclosures." They are not stunning. And amplifying them in a headline with such dramatic hyperbole is completely counter productive to what the DN should be all about.
Mike V | 8:10 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Palin's defenders (i.e., the die-hard Republicans) want to paint this as just typical family problems everyone encounters, and praise her for encouraging her daughter to have the baby.

How can conservatives (particularly Mormons) be happy to support a mother of 5 young children (the youngest less than a year old with Downs Syndrome) who wants to leave her family in the care of who knows who to go out and try to run the most powerful country in the world? If you want to be the ultimate career woman, fine, but don't continue having babies you're not planning on raising. Her family is falling apart and she ought to be there, not Washington D.C.

John McCain proved himself incapable of making effective Presidential decisions with this poorly- researched pick.
phoebe | 8:13 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
A 17 year old is not prepared to be a parent. The honorable thing to do would be to relinquish the child for adoption.

Sarah needs to spend more time with her children. McCain is too old to be President. He was taken in my Sarah's good looks. He deserves to lose this election. Obama is a poor choice as well. We don't have much to choose from this election. Heaven help us this next 4 years.
This is funny. | 8:12 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
Oh no, her daughter is pregnant. Happens all over the country all the time. LOL, there were 18 pregnancy's in a high school in
Massachusetts last year remember? The girls made some kind of pact. Check out Midvales teen pregnancy rate? It happenes everywhere. parents cant completely control their children, children make their OWN decisions. People say she should resign should move to cuba and be part of the communist party. I wouldnt vote for McCain or Obama.
Kevin | 8:14 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
I may be in the minority here, but I think Palin will do just fine. An unplanned pregnancy is something many families encounter. The fact that her daughter will have the baby and marry is great. They're setting a good example for how families should handle these difficult situations.

I do hope, however, Palin realizes "abstinence only" sex ed is a failed policy.
suzyk | 8:18 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
To "Evangelical lead". DO NOT speak for me as a Mormon. You have no right. You know evidently "nothing" about Mormons or you would't be making such a stupid statement. Get your facts straight. You can only speak for yourself. Keep it that way. The negative opinions and statements about John McCain and Sarah Palin are pathetic. When did you become a judger of the human race? We all choose our direction and sometimes it is wrong but the daughter's choice does not reflect at all on her upbringing. The daughter chose to fool around..you play..you pay sometimes. Thank goodness she has loving and supportive parents. I think Sarah Palin is a terrific choice for the VP and hopefully she is tough-skinned because she has her work cut out for her with all the so-called "perfect people" standing in judgement. Think back many years - is it possible you may have made a mistake? Get a grip!!!!!

This is just a political hit piece. The left is coming unglued because Sarah Palin is ruining the coronation they had planned.

Another no-moral republican. Where's the surprise?
Observer | 8:25 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
As they say.....the hits just keep on comin'! We have an unqualified ex beauty queen, ex sportscaster governor with less than 2 years experience and a journalism degree, who's being investigated for ethics violations(emails & phone calls coming out shortly), who was a member of the Alaska Independent Party that wants to secede from the US, who has a husband with a DUI record, and who has a 17 year old unwed pregnant daughter. And this is the best that John McCain could come up with for his vp selection. Reality is stranger than fiction.
KM | 8:25 a.m. Sept. 2, 2008
This, to me is laughable! The Democrats and their friends in the main stream media are finally in full combat mode. They seem to have overlooked anything amiss in The 'Holy' Obama.
Now it is time to sling the wet dirt. This should be fun and exciting. You are the greatest hypocrites the world over.
Get ready for the talking points that will be heard - add nausium - from the so called media.
Do a favor and ask yourselves if it is not odd that the media says the same lines from the different talking heads on every channel? remember "he has no gravitas"!
