Rise of 'unknown' Palin is meteoric and historic

Wow, I couldn't disagree more with JTM. Taking a chance on Obama is just too risky. This is our country's future we're talking about. It's actually the Democrats that don't have a plan. Oh sure, Obama has talked about a lot of ideas. He's just really light on the "how." A plan isn't a plan if continue to say "never mind reality, we'll figure that out later."

"Tax the rich, feed the poor, 'til there are no RICH no more." Uh, no thanks. And going back to being the punching bag for radical Islam? No thanks.

Not saying the path we're on doesn't need correction, but Obama is Jimmy Carter in sheep's clothing and we'd make a really big mistake going that direction again.

I doubt most feminists even consider Sarah Palin a woman.

After all, a real woman doesn't have FIVE kids (gasp). A real woman doesn't wear skirts. A real woman doesn't praise a republican white male, and a real woman clearly doesn't vote republican herself.

I would agree that when it comes to the feminist, far-left, few if any will vote for McCain because he chose Sarah Palin. In fact, I think most would vote for a Hugh Hefner/Larry Flint political ticket before they would vote for a McCain/Palin ticket.
McCain the gimmick man | 9:28 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
This is just another gimmick political move by McCain, like his campaign finance reform bill that abridged free speech. It echoes the pick of Geraldine Ferraro by the Democrats, and will have a similar impact. McCain showed us all why he graduated near the bottom of his class at the USNA and his choice of a communications major from the University of Idaho is an insult to the American people.

Obama just lost! I have followed Palin for about a year now and I can tell you she's the real deal. I was lukewarm for McCain and was actually thinking of writing in Palin for Pres. For a Repub. she takes no nonsense from the oil co's, fired staff who didn't remember who they worked for, and had all those who had their hand in the till arrested even if they were Republicans!!
ST. GEORGE | 9:43 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Take a hard look my fellow Republicans!

In the past few months the McCain campaign has been taken over by the Bushes and Big Oil.
Look at his campaign staff, look at his drill here drill now stance

Look at him riding in a golf cart with GHW Bush while Obama was in Germany

Look at his passing over Mitt Romney for a drill here drill now proponent, she has ties to Big Oil, her husband is Big Oil.

Something has happened to the Maverick who used to be John McCain------that cannot be good for our Nation, our National Security, our Economic Prosperity, but most of all for our FREEDOM.

The GOP has abandoned Utah and takes for granted that we are a RED state.

Time to teach the GOP a lesson, no matter what the puppets (Hatch, Bennett, etc.) and party faithful preach to us.

In a shifting world, it is good to know that some things remain constant, like the hypocrisy of politics. The Democrats discount the inexperience of Palin [in a state that has less people than Salt Lake County!} Yet they praise the inexperience of Obama in Chicago, and it is roughly the same length of inexperience.

On the other hand, the Republicans discount the experience of Biden and praise the experience of McCain, and both have the same experience for twenty five plus years.

In an ideal world, the Democratic ticket would be Biden-Obama or Richardson-Obama and the Republican ticket would be Hagel-Paul or something like that. Human emotions, however, always messes up the world of politics.
Nobody | 9:55 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Seems like most have missed it. McCain at least voted as a senator. Obamarama voted 'present' on most of the bills -neither a yes or no vote. Obamarama has a platform party of 'hope and change', and no more substance to it than that. He is a great orator, but so was Karl Marx, Adolf Hitler and many others. Say what people want to hear, and they will follow you anywhere. He is all 'sizzle' and no 'steak'. Unfortunately, this time more than ever, we have to vote for the least bad, not the best. I believe Palin is raising that bar by quite a bit.
Gobsmacked | 9:57 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Sarah Palin sounds personable, but she is absolutely unqualified to deal with the complexity of this job. When she was asked in a recent interview whether she was interested in being a VP candidate, she demurred, "First someone would have to explain to me what a vice president does all day." Hello? Perhaps she's heard of that fellow Cheney, who's rumored to have been the real president for the past two terms. In another recent interview, she said she'd been too busy being governor to follow the news on Iraq but she was sure the President and Secretary Rice were doing a fine job. Whatever else you can say about her views, these are not the comments of a qualified candidate.
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 10:05 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Let's talk about John McCain's feminist moderate sidekick as the first female running mate on a Republican VP presidential ticket. I think it sucks if you ask me, and McCain should of known better even at his age to. Palin's selection was more than a jaw-dropper as McCain passed over many other better-known prospects Many Mormon's and the people of Utah (that don't have a real life and to much time on their hand's with nothing to really to do up there in Utah) still believed Mitt Romney would be asked to join the ticket. If a member of the LDS Church and the majority of Utahns, may have known for about a week that he wouldn't be selected for the No. 2 spot why keep dwelling on it as if he was The Prophet and President of the LDS Church but just died so now everyone is in morning. GET A GRIP folks. McCain don't like Mormon's, it's that simple. He wants the radical feminist Hillary femi-nazi votes is all, along with a lower moderate broad than he is, in a "long shot" here, to win. That's all. Live with it now. It's done and over.

To Good Grief,

yep, I'm better off than i was 8 years ago and so is everyone I know. keep in mind, Bush inherited plenty of problems (the bubble economy about to burst and Clinton's letting bin Laden get away to name two)

To Anonymous,

McCain looks more frail every day? c'mon! He could kick Obama's butt in a heartbeat, now and in 8 years. Stop with the scare tactics

To Just a Mom,

Universal Health care doesn't work - anywhere, anytime. The GOP is trying to find a better way. A five minute trip to Google on the state of healthcare in Canada, England, etc will tell you why we don't want to go that direction.

To 'to Great Choice',

But the Democrats ARE making an issue of Palin's inexperience. And tell me again exactly what Obama has done in his 2 years in the Senate? Right, that's what I thought.

To St.George,

Vote for those who pledge to end our Oil Based economy. Pledging is one thing. Actually having a plan in another. Obama has no plan. McCain's balanced approach of drilling, finding alternative energy sources AND weening ourselves off OPEC is the ticket

I guess the person talking about Fellowship of Christian Athletes means that Sarah Palin was the head of her highschool chapter, and when I did a web search I found stuff about FCA converting Mormons to Christianity like the quote below. But I'm glad so many Des News readers are so enthusiastic about someone who thinks Mormons aren't Christians =)

"Dan was raised in the Mormon church but converted to Christianity in College.

This young ladies family is Mormon and although she has had a lot of concerns with the church her parents have put a lot of pressure on her not to leave the LDS church. Dan got to share briefly with her and encourage her to continue to seek the truth. Please pray for Indio as well as Nipomo High School and the work the Lord is doing there through FCA."

Taking a chance on Obama can't be any worse than taking the chance we did on Bush. McCain is Bush policies continued. Obama is Change.

Enid Greene redux? | 10:38 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Given Palin's flip-flops on the Bridge to Nowhere (supported it, then opposed it when it became politically convenient to do so), and abuse of power to wage a personal vendetta (firing the public safety commissioner for not terminating a state trooper who threatened her family), Palin reminds me of Enid Greene ... too much.

Answer man | 10:05 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008

No McCain has recycled failed Bush/Cheney GOP Big Oil energy policy. He pays lip service to alternatives.

Bush has spent very little on alternatives, and McCain will follow suit, this has been done and will be done to protect the interest of BIG OIL.

Every major problem facing our Nation could be solved or helped by an American Energy Revolution:

National Security (Reduce demand for oil take power from Middle East, Venezuela and Russia)

Economic Prosperity (Save $700 Billion sent to purchase foreign oil, create millions of high paying jobs that can only be done by someone living in the USA)

Environment (Eliminate pollutants and carbon emissions, saving the planet)

Save Precious Resource (Many chemicals, medicines, and advanced materials that will only be made from oil, are yet to be invented, we should save some oil for posterity)

JUST SAY NO TO BIG OIL! Kick the addiction, save our Nation, increase our Economy, save the Environment.

VOTE ONLY FOR THOSE WHO PLEDGE TO END THE OIL BASED ECONOMY.

ONLY THOSE WHO WILL INVEST IN THE AMERICAN ENERGY REVOLUTION.

Meteoric and historic (which is to say defying every previous choice of well-qualified candidates). And also unreasonable and unjustified.
Marilyn Rupper | 10:42 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
I wanted Mitt Romney too,but it's time to get over it. McCain hit it out of the park with the bases loaded when he chose Governor Palin. Game over.
Anna | 10:45 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
I think once Mormons get used to the idea of Palin, not Romney, they are going to love the idea. She is far more conservative than McCain, loves her gun, has 5 kids and looks like she could be in the Relief Society General Presidency. This will probably give them something to get out and vote for. I think the idea of her being president if John McCain should die is ridiculous, but the whole thing will still fly well here in Utah.

I'm sticking with Mormons for Obama because I still think he would be an awesome President and the republicans don't deserve my vote after what Bush and six years of republican control over congress have done to our country. Peace.
Kate | 10:51 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Alaska has a smaller population than Salt lake City. There is now way that will qualify her to lead such a large diverse country. What does she know about keeping a city like NYC safe from threats? About immigration problems, inner city problems, national security, etc., etc., etc.!!! This is a recipe for disaster should McCain die in office!
Steve | 10:57 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Insulting Gov. Palin is the Obama supporters new sport.

Seems they've forgot a bit of wisdom: "Those in glass houses should not throw stone."

Governor Palin runs a $5 billion budget, tens of thousands of employees and spent her time on the Alaska Oil Commission rooting out corruption and the impact of oil company lobbyists.

Prior to that, she ran a town. Big? No. But, delivering services in a small town when your constituents can talk back to you is immensely taxing.

Before that, she ran a successful commercial fishing business, paying taxes and meeting payrool.

What has Mr. Obama or Mr. Biden done?

Neither one has ever run a business, paid taxes or made payroll.

Neither one has ever run ANYTHING in government . . not a city, government department, a county or a state. Never supervised a single employee. Never implemented even one policy.

Sarah Palin has more experience getting things done than both members of the Democratic ticket put together.

She has a spine of steel from standing up to corruption and the ability to reform government. Sounds like a certain Iron Lady who led the United Kingdom and won the Falklands War.
Tom Paine | 10:58 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
McCain just insulted every American who actually thinks before they vote. It also shows what McCain really thinks of women voters. He clearly believes that women will vote for a woman, regardless of experience or stance on issues. Sure, there are women like that, especially from patriarchal cultures like Utah, and their friends/enemies in the evangelical crowd who are taught to be subservient to men. But to assume that Hillary Clinton supporters, independents, or Republican women, who are in favor of the right to choose, will vote for McCain simply because he's chosen a woman running mate, is a slap in the face to all thinking women. There's been talk about this selection energizing the evangelicals. However, the people who will really be energized are the millions of Americans from both parties who see this for what it is. A decision by McCain to put the future of America at risk for the sake of gaining a few votes.
Didn't let the door hit me | 11:03 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
I had to come here to see Utah's reaction to the announcement and I am glad I wasn't disappointed. Let's sum it up. She can shoot an automatic rifle, she's hot, and she isn't an environmentalist. Heck yeah! Let's vote for her and John "I was a POW" McCain. Fetch, she can get some experience on the job.
Obama used too many fancy, multi-syllable words for us. It made us uncomfortable to not understand what he said. But we didnt listen anyway and only got the summary from O'Reilly, Savage, or Limbaugh.
Man am I glad I made the decision to get out of the intellectual backwater that is Utah.
Foreign Experience | 11:06 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
For those saying Gov Palin doesn't have any foreign experience, is there any chance that she really does have experience? After all Alaska is right next door to Russia.
Laurie | 11:31 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Greetings from Alaska. I'm an Alaskan through and through. Our hearts are broken to think we may lose OUR amazing governor. If this is what God has in store for her we must accept it. Ladies and gentlemen, she CAN and WILL do the job. She's already found corruption in the ranks and has a number of those "good ole boys" sitting in a federal prison in Oregon on corruption charges. Several more have trials coming up. She fired the executive chef at the Governors mansion. She advised them her whole family knew how to cook. Alaskan's didn't need to spend almost $50,000 on a chef for their family. She sold the governors jet which was a real sore spot with us Alaskans. The longest sitting senator in Congress, Senator Ted Stevens has a trial starting in a few weeks for corruption charges. Sarah takes no prisoners. Please don't forget this is Father's plan. Trust in that when you vote!
Roger | 11:33 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Enid Greene redux? 10:38 - Your comments are so hilarious, they make me throw up.

You actually said, "...and abuse of power to wage a personal vendetta (firing the public safety commissioner for not terminating a state trooper who threatened her family)..."

WHAT?! So you're saying that a state trooper who threatens the life of Governor Palin's family should not be fired? Are you kidding????????

I don't know about where you work, but if I threatened the family of my company's CEO, I doubt I would still have a job.

I've read about this case and I find nothing that Palin did which was wrong. In fact, I hope the left-wing media, lead by NBC, the New York Times and Newsweek brings this guy forward and paints him as this poor unfortunate soul who was fired by the big bad Sarah Palin. Then when the true facts of the case are brought forward, it will be just like Dan Rather distorting George W. Bush's National Guard record.

McCain will then win in November, the left-wing media will again be exposed, and the feminists will pout over the first female U.S. Vice President being a Republican.

Unbelievable | 11:41 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
The right side of these comments are unbelievable. Baa Baa bad black sheep.

Obama's gonna have a tough time digging himself out from under the mess he created when he didn't take Hillary as v.p. I wonder if he can go back now and change his mind! His political spin doctors/lobbyists/political hacks/have met their match with McCains choice. He could have another rock concert and invite all his Hollywood buds and try to gain some points back but the problem is:Palin is both smarter and better looking that Streisand! History will show 6 months from now the specific mistakes he made but the reality is that the Demos may as well quit spending money and wait for the next election! Watch for Palin to go down to the Senate and House floor and ask them why they don't DO SOMETHING!
Roy from Missouri | 11:57 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Wake-up! We do not need a mudslinger maverick in the white house. We have just gone through a president who pointed and snickered and shut down the by partisanship of Washington for there own agenda. We need to look at the candidates who can bring and heal this nation together. All four Dem's and Rep would be find if they can bring new direction and declare war on poverty and energy now not in twenty years. Where is our hope and faith in each other.Lets all work together vote in all four, keep them in the white living with each other, much like our fore fathers. It is now!! Make a change and a plan for all Americans. No one goes home, not the congress not the senate not the supreme court until we are on the correct path and right direction for the nation and the World. Work together America!! We can over come, with hope faith and charity in our hearts and minds we can move mountains and bring smiles and happeness to whom we come in contact with. Get Real, get Going.
Dan Quayle in a skirt | 11:55 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
The 1st paragraph say's it all. The best the GOP can do is offer the nation a VP that's 2 years removed from mooseburgers and running a town smaller than most high school football stadiums. There's a big difference between keeping the bears out of the local garbage dump and keep Russia out of Georgia. This selection is political suicide for
the G(ods) O(wn) P(arty), great values or not. Palin is a heartbeat, a 72 year old one at that, away from the most important job in the world. No way a small town mayor or small (population) state gov. is ready to be president!
Anonymous | 11:56 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
McCain is desperate. Sarah Palin has less foreign policy experience than Bush had back in 2000.
Way to go McCain! | 11:56 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
I would take someone with governor experience over senator experience any day! What does a senator do? At least a governor DOES something.

To Realist: the relevancy of their "life" experiences show they have character, integrity and strength all VERY relevant to running a great nation!

Loved the question by SparkyVA: "would you rather have an inexperienced vice president who is a learner, or an inexperienced president who knows it all?"
unimpressed | 12:00 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
John McCain made a clearly political decision that he thought might be good for him in winning the election. He absolutely did not put his country first by picking Pallin. He in fact put his beloved country in jeapordy. Get serious "my friends". If McCain has the big one in six months, will you all be thinking this was a brilliant choice?
Former Alaskan | 12:03 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
I'd rather have a savy, intelligent, moral housewife for VP than the entire faculty of the Harvard Law School. Sarah will demolish the eastern sophisticates and bring ethics back to the politics, as she has in Alaska.
Affirmative Action | 12:13 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Not the best or most qualified to for the job but she is a woman. Let's face it that is why she was offered the VP role. I am sure she is great, nice, looks good, etc. but seriously she is not more qualified than many of the other choices.
Re: Roger | 12:19 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
There is no left wing media bias, silly. For every two positive things they say about Obama, they say another ten negative things. At least McCain can stop his scary "no experience" adds. That was all he had. It doesn't look good for you, Utah. Yay!!!

red blooded?? | 12:19 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Why are there so many comments about her being "red-blooded"?
Vulcans have green blood, Bushes have blue blood...

Governor Palin's blood is red?
Well, I'll be, she does have the qualifications for a VP or the likely President when McBush keels over!
Sam | 12:24 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
I was totally against Mitt Romney coming anywhere near the presidency. But I would gladly chose him over Palin. She's governed a state with a population of about 680,000. That is less than Salt Lake City. John McCain likes to say country first. His BIGGEST DECISION as a presidential candidate shows he really doesn't mean country first.
CAAAAA | 12:25 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Interesting how Republicans suddently think a first-term senator in their mid 40s is now qualified for the white house.

My prediction: McCain just handed Obama the presidency.

My brother and his wife live in Alaska.

You would not want to mention her name to them.

The poverty for the native people is as bad as the worst 3rd world country. The economy is great if you earn 250K and more.

She has not done a thing while in office to give her any credit at all.
No jobs, no affordable health care, no housing for the working stiff.

Some of you think she would help America? WOW
Lulu | 12:39 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
NOW I am excited about the election. I will take a hard working mother with common sense and moral values (that does not dress like a man)with a hard working, supportive husband (bless your heart!) over another Washington boob any day. If McCain and Palin are smart enough to surround themselves with good advisors, they can do the job.
Also, why would I want a smooth talking John Kennedy wannabe who grew up in Chicago politics as the president???

I am LDS, and I am going to vote for Obama. But I visited the FCA website and didn't see anything amiss. What was I supposed to notice? That a Christian athlete refused to be associated with Playboy magazine? Sounds good to me.

I live in Alaska and I have to say, Gov. Palin has done a reasonable job as governor. I don't agree with everything she's done--she has shown a tendency to take action before doing all her homework, which I think will be a liability--but she's a breath of fresh air compared to the corrupt politicians our state seems to produce so readily.

Can we please stop the bizarre personal attacks on candidates? Each candidate has legitimate strengths and weaknesses, and they have nothing to do with the religious organizations they affiliate with. Let's do everyone a favor and limit our discussion to real issues.

This is a fascinating collection of rude comments by people who have already made up their minds trying to justify their own decisions - left or right.

That sure sounds like democracy in action to me.

What a great country. We are totally free to say what we want; totally free to choose who we want to lead us; and totally free to throw unsubstantiated insults at the person we think is the "loser".

All of you who think Obama is some sort of socialist freak or Muslim in hiding don't have a clue what solialism is or what it is like to live with a government dominated by Muslim leaders. Not only would you be forbidden to insult him - you wouldn't even have the freedom of the internet to know he needed to be insulted!

God Bless America - and God Bless any man or woman who puts up with the raging idiocy demonstrated here to run for President. May the best man, woman, or socialist win. Any one of them that we pick is determined to make America better, even knowing it is a country full of raging, opinionated loonies ...!

I love America !!!!

I was a Mitt hopefull and initially was devistated when they announced Mrs. Palin as his choice. I watched the presentation with some rexervations and honestly some anger. As the governor spoke and told of her famnily and experience I was impressed with the honesty and ingretity that she possessed and found myself excited for the thought her election. To you who asked about her staring down North Korea, Iran etc and being able to negotiate on behalf of US. The "one" said don't worry about these countries because they are little and not important, let them go. Who would you rather have, the woman who cares about the values that the founding fathers had, or some "one" that cares only for himself. I feel more confident with this ticket than that "one" who wants change, change the amount the government spends of our money "more more mores" and yet says he won't raise taxes. HOW DO YOU DO THAT??????
