rats | 7:06 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Rats. Pawenty was so light weight he would have become a liability immediately.

The only other light weight being considered is the woman gov. of Alaska. Talk about inexperience!!! If she gets the nod the case of women running for higher office will be set back 40 years!

She is not ready for prime time either.

Demos are going to win anyway. Why? Because Bush and the gop have messed up this nation so badly that we have one or two allies left, an economy in ruins, and an army stretched so thin that we cannot even respone to any new crisis.

Vote demo. and end this misery.

Romney is in Ohio as we speak!
Anonymous | 7:32 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am thrilled that Gov. Palin is the nominee. She has a compelling story with her history of whistleblowing when unethical conduct is involved, her approval ratings as governor in the 90's. her outdoor sporting, her decision to go ahead with the decision to have a child when gene testing indicated that the child had Down's syndrome, etc. etc. It seems that her family is truly middle class and she will understand the majority of Americans. Mitt Romney had too much baggage with comments on the campaign trail, his numerous houses, no history of military service in the family, etc. Governor Palin will be able to appeal to some of Hillary's disappointed women constituency.

It's Tim Pawlenty. Get over it! Romney is history. He can go back to sending American jobs offshore.
TrickyD | 8:06 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Please, Rats. If you're talking inexperience, Obama doesn't have a resume very long either. His background is shallower than Utah Lake and his policies of taxation and his knowledge of foreign policy could be put between two pieces of bread and you'd still have no meat. Every politician cries "change". I supported "change" eight years ago when I allowed my mother-in-law to move in with us on the guise that she didn't have much longer to go. Eight years later, I feel better about Bush than my choice to allow that.

Whatever | 8:21 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
The really sad part of this whole process is this. The USA is currently the leading power of all nations here on earth, and the best we can do is have Obama vs. McCain for President. Come on, as a nation we have got to be able to do better than that. It's just sad, really sad.
It doesn't matter | 8:24 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
It doesn't matter who or what McCain picks. Anything is better than Obama/Biden.
Not Surprised | 8:25 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I am not surprised that the pick will not be Mitt Romney. Remember, earlier Romney was the front-running candidate until the Evangelical Christians went against him. The turning point was in South Carolina after over 70% of the EC said they would not vote for a Mormon President and Huckabee's inane question about Mormon beliefs.

A second reason why Romney would be a liability to McCain is Mitt's wealth. McCain, between him and his wife, are extremely rich but how wealthy Americans do not know (the McCains don't even know how many homes they own). Romney is well known to have over 200 million dollars.

This race is becoming one of "haves" vs "have nots." The American public has perceived that the current administration, and the Republican Party in general, have catered to wealth, i.e. oil companies, Wall Street, Lending agencies, lobbyists.

It takes extreme amounts of money to run for a national or a state office and once there people tend to get richer and more powerful (Bramble and the pizza deliverer, for example), while the rest of us try to keep our homes from taken away from us.

It's Palin | 8:42 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Poor Mitt loses again. Maybe he should have focused on a second term as Governor.
Sid | 8:44 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Darn! I was just getting used to the idea of calling Mitt, Mittens. It was going to be fun. Oh well, my fellow Mormons, now your guy will get another shot in 4 years when McCain loses. That should make you happy. Eight is Enough!
Anonymous | 8:46 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
She has 2 years as Governor of Alaska and a beauty queen title. There goes the "inexperience" issue when McCain is 73 and has recurrent melanoma.

All this election will be about is his age & health and her vapidness.
Completely Underwhelmed | 8:46 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
As hard-core Republican, McCain was always a stretch. Now he's lost me completely. You pick a Vice-President who could be President if needed. McCain is 72 years old. She's 44 years old. Do the math. SHe has no foreign affairs experience, no economic experience. I'm already fearing the debate between her and Joe Biden on foreign affairs isues. What a disaster. He deserves to lose.
How Transparent... | 8:49 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Talk about the most transparent move in political history (if McCain chooses Palin as his running mate). "Hmmm let's see. There are all these women ticked off that Hillary wasn't chosen. So if I pick a woman VP, they will all flock to us! I'm a genius!!"

The only problem with this is that Palin has NO experience or expertise to bring to the table that will help fix the mess the country is in. She's an ex-beauty queen, fishery worker, part-time sportscaster who eloped with her husband to save a couple of bucks. A first term governor?? Please tell me this isn't true.

She'll be funner to look at in long, boring meetings than Pawlenty or Romney for sure, but this is what our political landscape has degenerated to?

Good call, McCain. This will cost you the election.
Bush Voters | 8:50 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
You all knock Obama and say he can't do the job for one reason or another. The problem is I don't trust YOUR judgment. You had the poor judgment to vote for Bush two times. I'm going with my gut. I had good judgment 4 years ago and 8 years ago when I said no thank you George W. Bush two times!

OBAMA '08
Eehhhh | 8:51 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
The politics in Washington DC iss becoming a huge joke. No wonder no one notices or even cares to vote. That's the result of our lack of democracy... too much freedom or not enough motivation to push toward our country being on the right track.
Lew Jeppson | 8:54 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Poor little Utah Republicans; they don't understand that the Mittster will not be McCain's running mate because he, McCain, can't stand him
Obama 08 | 8:56 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Sorry Romney Fans:

On paper, he may seem like the best choice. But let's face it: the GOP doesn't respect him and neither does McCain.

He sold his soul and put up $50 million to come in third in the GOP runoff.

McCain used him as an attack dog to pave the way for the real VP choice.

McCain makes fun of Utah and has in the past made fun of Mormons.

Take a stand, Utah.

OBAMA 08
John Pack Lambert | 8:56 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I see that Gov. Palin has a good record. I especially like the Down Syndrome Child Issue.
Maybe she does not have the experience of some, but she has been the executive head of much more than either McCain or Obama, so do not knock her on that.
I think the attack on Romney for no one in his family being in the military is a low blow. I especially take objection to the attacks on his sons for not being in the military. Craig Romney, his youngest son, was serving a mission when the 9/11 happened. He is now married. We have been told that we need educated people to fight the war on terror. We have als been told it is a political war. People can do more good by learning Arabic and mideast culture than by walking around with guns in Anbar. We need troops on the ground, but there is no draft so do not act like those who are not in the military are sherking their duty.
I am actually considering voting for McCain.
GWB | 8:57 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
We have been told by Republicans that Obama's time in the Ilinois legislature and only part of one term in the Senate make him unqualified to be commander in chief.

Then McCain picks someone with time in a state legislature and part of one term as Governor. This means if he has a problem, we get someone as inexperienced as what they have been saying is so bad.

Great pick McCain, please continue undermining your talking points.

Re: Not Surprised | 8:25 a.m

Why was Huckabee's question about Mormon beliefs inane?

So, Are you telling me you don't believe that Jesus and Lucifer are brothers?

Or do you think it was silly because you just don't want everybody to know what Mormons truly believe?

The inability to be open and truthful about his beliefs is what hurt Romney. Oh, and he's a pompous jerk.
G Kent | 9:06 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Not only do I not trust BUSH VOTERS, but I have learned not to trust the Supreme Court. After all, you of the short memories, it was the Supreme Court who chose Bush the first time, it was NOT the electorate!!!!!
Mark B | 9:07 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I wish Mrs. Palin well in this new phase of her life. I hope the voters treat her with respect as she gets on what must be quite a steep learning curve. Debating Biden? If he beats her too badly, it looks like piling on, which, in turn, angers women and could lead to more women going GOP. Maybe. I dunno.

I am thinking I will vote for McCain. I agree with him on right to life issues although not on McCain-Feingold.
I totally agree with him on immigration reform and really hope that Bennion Spencer gets elected to the house.
I feal McCain's foriegn policy is built around sound policies as opposed to Obama's naive, Carteresque policy. Obama supporters seem to not realize that there are limits in the system and you have to fashion a policy that negotiates these limits.
We need a president who will give us judicial nominees with a belief in the laws as written and not as they think they ought to be written or how they would have been written if the writers were alive today and knew what the judge knows.
My one major gripe against many conservative judtices is that they undervalue freedom of religion. They have too often sided with the state against individual religious actions, and non-Christians have almost never won religion based litigation. The fact that a township in Pennsylvania even tried to stop a convent becoming a Jweish synagoge on zoning grounds is disturbing.
Utah Resident | 9:14 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
I'm disappointed it's not Mitt. This is a pathetic and obvious attempt by McCain to pickup the women who never got over Hillary losing the nomination.

McCain just lost the election. Obama will win and it is going to be a rough 4 years. Hopefully the donkeys and the elephants can put up better candidates four years from now. I agree with Whatever's comment. Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin is a sad tale. America should be able to do better than this.
McCain is toast | 9:18 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
McCain has lost the election with this decision, if not before. Who's going to vote for a cranky, old, almost-drunken sailor, with an inexperienced Alaska governor to take over for him when he falls over?
SAY WHAT???? | 9:18 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Palin has a BS degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho and now she is one step away from the commander and chief of the United States? Holy cow - I know McCain wanted to pick up some women votes but this was NOT the way to do it.This woman has virtually ZERO experience with anything and with a 72 year old president with skin cancer most people will be shaking in their boots with even the thought that this woman could be president. What an absolutely bone-headed move for McCain. I think this also gives us an idea of McCain's judgement - or the lack thereof. I guess I just switched from red to blue! Yikes!
McCain throws in the towel | 9:19 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Maybe McCain watched Obama's speech last night and realized his running for President is just a lost cause, so he pretty much decided to just throw in the towel by picking Palin without really officially exiting the race.

He goes on and on about how Obama does not have the necessary experience to run the country, and so he decides to choose someone with less experience. That makes no sense - McCain could easily die while in office because of his age, and he expects voters to be comfortable with him choosing a VP that would take over when he dies who has less experience than Obama. GET A FREAKIN' CLUE MCCAIN. I seriously think he's delusional now. It's his 72nd birthday and by choosing Palin, he's really showing his age.
John Pack Lambert | 9:20 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
More disturbing are the people who lived with a convent in their back yard but had the audacity to come out and say things like "we do not want a synagoge in our backyard".
We need judges who recognize that religious freedom for most people requires a place to exercise that religion.
We also need judges who will uphold RLUIPA and use it to stop the use of zoning requirements to prevent any new church building, or make it virtually impossible.
I would also like to see judges who would overturn rulings about Orthodox synagoges that ignored the fact that the religious requirements of Orthdox Jews neccesitated them being able to have a synagogue close to their home.
If McCain can follow Bush's lead and appoint judges like Kent Jordan we will be in good hands. Jordan was the judge who threw out a suit against a Catholic school that was run by a group of nuns and on the cite of their convent by a teacher who had been fired for published support of legal abortion and working for Planned Parenthood.
The right of religious schools to control their message needs to be preserved.

Sarah . . . . Sarah Who is Running for WHAT?.

It speaks volumes about Mitt Romneys general unpopularity and the unpopularity of his religion that even when Romney could help McCain win Michigan and the West, McCain decided to instead struggle to find a vice president candidate with even LESS government and foreign relations experience than Barrack Obama. Finding someone with less government and foreign relations experience than Obama takes effort. So he selects a one-term governor with ties to oil, and a governor of a state with 3 electoral college votes.

It also speaks volumes about the climate women in politics find themselves that when CNN announced the selection, some of their reporters wondered aloud if she had the time because she is the mother of five and the mother of newborn child with Downs Syndrome.

If Palin had been a man, I wonder if the reporters would have objected on the same grounds.

It is after all the twenty first century. Female politicians can hire a Guatemalian nanny just as easily as a man politician.
A democrat gone repulican. | 9:27 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
First of all, I AM a democrat. I did NOT vote for Bush (either time). I will NOT vote for Obama- EVER! He is an elitist snob, who has no problem taking away our civil liberties. Atleast McCain picked someone REAL. Not just another cow-towing- yes-man! I think that the Republican ticket is the way to go. McCain's thoughts don't reflect the general republican views. I'm glad he picked a woman. I'm glad that she "worked in a fishery". What right does ANYONE have to judge someone who WORKS for an honest living. She is a conservationist and a family woman. She cares about people. So get over your donkey and elephant mindset b.s. and vote based on information on the candidate's records.

I spent most of 2007 working for Mitt"s campaign as a volunteer and now have been working for McCain as a volunteer. I will not work another single minute for McCain nor will I vote for him or Obama. Maybe Mitt will be ready to try it again in 2012 and I'll get another chance to support him.
Maggie | 9:36 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
Contrary to popular belief (in Utah - this goofy, yet beautiful state), we actually have two of the best choices we've had for president in years. Obama is the man for our times, but McCain would be a respectable leader if it comes to that. Good grief, what glass are you people looking through?
Ray M. | 9:37 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008
While this Veep selection cements McCain's reputation as a "maverick," he loses any edge that he had in positioning his ticket as the one with experience. Sarah..who? The former Mayor of where...Wasilia? You can say what you want about Hillary, but at least the court of public scrutiny and dozens of authors have thoroughly scrutinized her career. To paraphrase Larry, we know that woman. Given concerns over McCain's age and health, the thought of the novice Palin excercizing the reigns of power, however remote, is disconcerting for independents like myself who have waited until today to pick a candidate. I was hoping, desperately hoping, to see a woman finally make it, but I'm saddened that this choice will result in an outcome much like that of the Dukakis/Ferraro ticket in 1988 and set back the cause for a woman in the Oval Office for another decade.
