Reed has always been a class act, definitely my favorite of the two headlining
receivers. I think he's a much better representative of the Y than Collie.
Even back before his mission, Collie was a pompous, holier-than-thou type.

That is one of the least intelligent things I've heard in a very, very long
time. So Todd Watkins's non-membership in the LDS Church kept him from
being BYU's top receiver for a couple of years, I guess? Not to mention
Matt and Mark Bellini from the 80's.

If Michael Reed had been playing for Utah last season, he would have been 3rd in total yards receiving, 3rd in yards/game receiving and 1st in TDs.

I would have to say that his best moment was at the end of last years BYU-Utah
game when the ball was thrown to Reed and he had to put a bear hug on the Utah
receiver who was going to intercept the pass. Not only did he stop the
interception, he got a PI called on the Utah defender.
For the mormon bashers - I am sure they just accidentally threw to Reed in that situation not realizing that he was a non-LDS player. I am sure if they could do it over again, they wouldn't have thrown to him.

anyone on this forum takes the time to read those stats do you? If so, I pity

One, BYU throws the ball more than Utah. Two, Brian Johnson could barely throw a noodle last year. I knows this sounds anathema especially with the season about to begin, but Mike
Reed's decision to stick with the cougars and his resultant success is more
important than the outcome of the games. Seasons and teams come and go. As much
as I enjoy the games, examples, such as Mike is, leave the prattling of the fans
in this discussion in the dust. Long after this season is history and
forgotten, Mike will be a leading member of society and a tribute to his family

The problem with using statistics as incontrovertible facts is numbers
can't apply other factors such as injuries and schemes. You have to take
numbers at face value. I could come in here and proclaim Navy has a superior
running game to the Y and even provide all of the numbers to back it up. But
wait. Navy runs a triple-option offense, of course their running STATS are going
to be superior. But yet, I'd bet most coaches across the country would
rather have Harvey Unga than any player Navy has to offer.

I agree with many of the comments, amen! Thanks Mike Reed for staying with the
team. Usually there is a lot more smack on these BYU threads, nice to have a
break from that. Go Cougars, and I hope the Utes well represent our conference
and my native state and takes out the 'verines in da house!

Three words that Mike Reed has come to embraace in his personal philosophy and walk with Christ......
It is unfortunate that folks like Ted, and Bob and Anonymous have deeb mentalities that like to stir the pot and see what comments they can elicit from BYU supporters....
It is interesting that articles involving the "u" never take the approach that articles such as this concerning BYU players take.
Despite our inperfections, those of us that are lds or non-lds at the Y, embrace these ideals. The forementioned attributes of Tradition, Spirit and Honor follow us the rest of our lives. Wherever we go or whatever we do professionally. These words are sacred ideals that lead most of us in the direction our Heavenly Creator has intended. We do it by choice. Choice is true freedom.
Michael Reed along with others who are non-lds athletes and students are a shining example of what the Brigham Young University is all about.
It is sad that the three words mentioned above are not mentioned on a casual basis at the "u". It demonstrates a marked difference in the philosophies
embraced by coaches, players, students and administrators.....

Mike Reed reminds me of another black non-LDS class act BYU had a while ago:
Derwin Gray, who recorded a record 22 tackles in a game and 3 interceptions, is
now a pastor. He returned to address the team in 2006. DesNews coverage is in

All of the talk about Mike's receiving stats is nice, but for those of you
who can...go through the film of each game last season and watch what Mike does
downfield when the ball isn't thrown his way. Harvey Unga owes most of his
big yardage plays specifically to Mike Reed's blocking down field. The
"pasting" of Tate was not his only contribution to the running game.
Mike is an all around stud who makes the offense better just by being on the
field. He's one of the many unsung heroes the Cougars have on their team
that don't need all the hype and attention to feel satisfied in the way
they play. I have always been a Mike Reed fan, and hope he succeeds in the rest
of his life's endeavors. Here's to a great young man and to a great
senior season!!

There is Tradition, Spirit, and Honor at many universities. I don't mind
BYU embracing these things and using these words as a direction they want to
pursue, but don't think that because others don't publicly display the
words that these things don't exsist. But enough of that! This article was
about a man that has made significant effort for himself, family, team, and
commuinity and he should be commended. Would that all of us could do as much.

Mike Reed is what a student athlete should be, like many of the Utah and BYU players. Glad to have him as a role model for both schools.

BYU has probably had 3 of 4 times more the amount of All-Americans in their
football program than Utah has had or even dreamed of have!!!

Was Reed absolutely de cleating Tate on the 2nd offensive play of the game. Too
bad it was on the MTN. Not one replay, not one comment. Reed gets it done. I
