What a backpeddle from yesterday's article. I hope the arrogant Neo-Cons in the legislature saw the writing on the wall and maybe even Mr. Bramble will be convinced to back off a bit. And maybe pigs will fly someday . . . .

For once, the Republican legislative leaders made a good choice. Now, if they really care about serving their constituents, they'll lower the bar for the initiative process too.

So I'm curious--did the paper jump the gun yesterday and create news, rather than reporting on it, or is this just a quick reversal by astute politicians that realized, once the word was out, that changing the referendum law was a losing proposition?

Thank goodness common sense and fairness prevailed. I wonder what happened between yesterday and today to change their minds?

Grateful (1:13 p.m.) -- I'm wondering if minds weren't changed once they realized the firestorm their proposed action would cause. That makes me wonder how many of those legislators are up for re-election.

...how getting caught insulting the groundlings will cause a Utah legislator to reverse course.

Too much democracy, eh? We won't forget those words in November.

Yeah right. The republicans just had bad press and cover their behinds. Wait until the last few hours of the legislature.

Why don't they just come out and say,

"We are Republicans. We wish to destroy public education further than we have already done. We are shooting to be last in every category but somehow the students, parents and teachers keep overcoming the roadblocks we have tried to place in their way!"

We have one of the worst Legislatures in the Country. The republicans in this state don't believe in good open government or Democracy. Let's vote them all out starting with Curtis and the rest of the House Leadership. I want to live in a place were Democracy is valued not Utah/Russia!!!

Orem Parent - it is obvious you will not be happy with education spending until grandma can't afford her house anymore due to the outrageous taxes it would take to pay for all of your kids to go to school. Give it a break, there is just not enough $ to make you happy.
