Besides producing ads that slam each politician, and maybe to pay for travel
expenses, what is the point of raising money in a campaign? Or is that where it
goes? What if a candidate made an extremely rare move of donating all the money
they had raised to some charity or program for youth or something? It's
crazy how any candidate promises to help the country and bring change and better
the economy, yet when it comes to campaigning, they throw on their expensive
designer suit and travel the country in their private jet, while raising hordes
of money as if it's a competition or business. Maybe I could try being a
candidate for office and raise a lot of money and when I have enough for my life
needs, I'd drop out and live happily ever after.

McCain may indeed win Utah "handily," but he will not win it
enthusiastically, unless he excites Utahns/Mormons by picking Romney as his
Veep. All of the driving I've done over the last several months arounf
Utah, Idaho and Colorado pretty much proves that. In that time period I've
seen literally hundreds of Obama bumper stickers (not too mention yard signs),
while I've noticed only a grand total of 2 McCain stickers (which means
that they're out there, but nobody wants them).

The money is needed mainly for media. Since the country is much too large for
the candidate or his surrogates to rely on person-to-person contact, candidates
must rely on advertising in the media. Television, particularly, can swallow
those funds as fast as they can be raised. Other high cost items are polling
and travel.

Lumping the name "Abraham Lincoln" in with Reagan and Bush is
erroneous. Technically, all belonged to groups calling themselves "The
Republican Party", but the Republican Party of Lincoln's era was
drastically different than Reagan and Bush's party. Lincoln would likely
view today's Republican PArty with profound sadness and embarrasment.

Obama is closer to the conservative Mormon values I grew up with than Washington
'maverick' John McCain. That makes Obama also the more Republican
choice as the actual Republican is the greater Liberal this time around.
Lastly, I was just plan annoyed with McCain with what he said about Romney
during the Primaries and frankly I am not going to forget that. I said then I
wouldn't vote for McCain, and nothing less than a VP spot for Romney (or
Obama picking Hilary) is going to change my mind.

If you don't know where campaign contributions go, get educated. There is
no excuse to be ignorant. Every expenditure is posted on the web -- or better
yet head down to campaign headquarters and volunteer for an afternoon. See

Aside from the $$$ question, we're starting to see what many of us strongly
suspected would happen as the campaign rolled along to the point where airy
generalizations would give way to policy specifics - Obama has plummeted from
his charisma-driven lead to a policy-driven 2nd place to McCain's much more
solid experience and campaign platform.
As long as the campaign was about fact-free slogans and charisma, Obama was destined to lead McCain. But as more concrete positiions of the candidates on actual policy issues have come to the front, McCain pulls ahead fast, and fairly decisively.
Obama had better come up with better ideas than "inflate your tires to save gas", "plead with Iran to be good at the bargaining table", and "raise taxex for every problem" VERY quickly.
This "new Democrat" is just recycling Old Liberal Ideas that we've seen fail repeatedly for the last forty years.

Obama might be raising more money, but he has to be spending more money by far.
My mom made the mistake of sending some money in to Obama (she's a Democrat
- yeah, there are some of those in Utah). Now, she gets 1 or 2 letters each day
from Obama, asking for more money. One can only hope they come out ahead in
that.

McSame has only raised $595000 ? I heard they had to move that $100000/plate
dinner to a smaller location but they could have held it around the smallest
table at Dees. Obamas money comes from regular people who care about this
country, not wealthy 'donors' who only care about themselves.

Utahns realize that a McCain victory will result in more of their family members
stuck in endless wars throughout the middle east and elsewhere. They also
realize that we do need a drastic change in how we deal with the rest of the
world and going to war everytime someone disagrees with the US is not the
answer. It's time to seek alternative solutions to issues that affect the
future of this country. Obama is the future, McCain is the past.

So far, only two accurate posts on this article. Voice of Reason points to
McCain's 5 point lead that was just announced this morning. Last election
cycle, Kerry had a 7 point lead at this time, then lost it as issues finally
came into the spotlight. This time, Obama has already lost his 7 point lead,
and quickly turned it into a 5 point deficit. He is proving to be very naive on
issues, and his party isn't helping him any in Congress.
And Anonymous has the second accurate post. Utahns are embarrassed that they have to vote for McCain (as are Republicans all over the country).
Doesn't matter, I'm still voting for Bob Barr. I'm one of those Republicans that Anonymous talks about who dislikes McCain. I won't vote for the guy.

Most of us who survived that experience are now in our late 60's and 70's. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John's age (73) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for 4 or more years.
I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.
It is also disappointing to see him take on and support Bush's war in Iraq, even stating we might be there for another 100 years. For me John represents the entrenched and bankrupt policies of Washington-as-usual. The past 7 years have proven to be disastrous for our country. And I believe John's views on war, foreign policy, economics, environment, health care, education, national infrastructure and other important areas are much the same as those of the Bush administration.

Let me begin by saying every abortion is a failure, of common sense, of judgment, of economics, of science, etc. No woman is ever happy she has had an abortion. It is a tragic time for her, just ask anyone who has had one.
I am a Democrat and faithful member of the LDS Church. Have you ever read the 1973 proclaimation from the 1st presidency on abortion? First and foremost, grevious sin, NOT MURDER. Second, not a sin in cases of rape, incest, life and good health (including mental health) of the mother.
I am a Democrat because pro-choice allows the positions of our church to be lawful. Think about it, an abortion ban makes the stated position of the LDS Church an illegal option. The supposed "pro-life" position only protects the unborn, not the already living. Pro-choice allows for a pro-Agency stance.
Our politics should follow our religion, not vice versa.

I am actually not surprised that Obama has made more money here, because McCain
has burned his bridges with us a long time ago. However, when election time
comes around, I cannot vote for either Obama or McCain, because I don't
believe in either of their platforms. We need to face the truth that this
country can no longer rely on either party to help us as citizens. My vote will
have to go to the independant Ralph Nader, because he makes more sense and he
knows how to fix our economic problems. The only other candidate that had that
capabability was Mitt Romney and he has dropped out. So when left to pick
between two real losers, I have to pick someone else.

(rape, incest, life of mother). The Pro-Choice platform is not about that, it is
about allowing abortions in all situations. Yes, there are some pro-life people
who want to rule out all abortions regardless of situation but they are a
minority. However, the majority of "pro-choice" people want abortions
to be allowed for whatever reason.
