Townships win praise because they work well

Poor Jay Evensen - it seems that nobody will buy into his solution for Salt Lake
County by consolidating cities and the county into one government. Yes, there
would be only one police department. But, yes there would then be only one
police union with the capacity to hold the entire valley hostage over labor
disputes. The same would be true with fire and other municipal functions. No
funds going to a soccer stadium? How naive can you really be Jay? There would
still be the request from persons proposing stadiums and then the fight would be
within the consolidated City and County council. If the consolidated government
had council districts apportioned by population, Salt Lake City would not only
never see a soccer stadium but any other arts or sports venue. The state
constitution should have been followed years ago that would have required new
growth areas to either incorporate or annex. If you look to Davis County and
Utah County, the constitution was followed and you did no see county government
morph into a "quasi" city. Jay,the real issue is jail that issues
"get out of jail" cards at the front door!

Concerned? Take a look at the tax increases in Utah County's boutique
cities. Consolidation in Salt Lake County has been voted on, twice. Defeated
both times. Maybe another vote is needed, but don't look for any municipal
governments to support it.
