It is unfortunate that this story has been reported again and completely unfair to the missionary who was abducted. I see no reason that his name needed to be used. Why should his family and children, if he has any, have to read about this mess.

Get real Deseret News. What are you now, the Enquirer or the Globe or what? Over in England, where the missionary incident took place, this is called Yellow Journalism. Put yourself in the shoes of the missionary and then 30 years later the story is dragged up again. Maybe this is something people would like to forget about. Maybe I should have my dog cloned and they will put it in the paper, oh but what must I do first to get that notoriety.

You are a newspaper, not a gossip column.

How disgusting to have the headline then a story that repeatedly states it is all speculation as to whether Bernann and Joyce are one and the same. Not only that, the whole old story is highlighted to I'm sure the pain of the victim while there is no positive ID on the woman.

I did not make the previous post using this name. Not that anything like this did happen in my mission, but I feel my identity has been attacked. There is a very small percentage chance, and I mean very small percentage chance, that the poster shares my name, but even then it is misleading.
From now on I am going to post as Zelnhelm83. I am not sure this will help anything, but I will then be able to accuse any users of that post of being outright imposters.

please don't name the victims in the article. It is difficult enough for male victims to be taken seriously in the first place. Many more males don't report abuse than females because people don't believe them. I am sure this was something that if he ever disclosed it, he would've wanted to do it on his timetable and not have his entire family in the headlines again. Editors, please be more careful in the future to protect victims of abuse. This isn't Inside Edition or Access Hollywood.

I'm surprised Deseret News would stoop to publishing such a worthless article; nothing more than gossip.

I used to work with a member of Mr. Anderson's family, and this person said the media coverage had devastated their family. Not only did this young man have to go through the horror of the experience, but he has to be made the butt of callous jokes and news articles. I'm ashamed that Deseret News would bring up such a trite matter as this woman's dogs so that Mr. Anderson's name has to be dragged through the press again. Deseret News owes him an apology.

Stand a lot taller DN--we expect more from you than a two-bit newspaper.

Lock the woman who did it to him up and throw away the key. Pay the victim compensation by selling all of her property and stock give it to the victim as well as all her saving and retirement fund. That is if it really is her or not.

My cousin was murdered about 30 years ago, it was a very brutal murder. They guy was on death row in Utah, I don't think he is anymore, but every time that they have had an article about the guy in prison, they mention my cousins name. It hurts to have to read or see that on the news, but that is the news, his mother wrote for DN. How many of us read this article? Part of the newspaper's business, is to get people to read. If they had an article that Gov Huntsman stubs his toe, I just don't think it would get a lot of readers. All of you and myself are voyers and we want to hear those stories and see those pictures. Oh, by the way, I saw her pictures on Fox news, it is the same person, too many distinctive features that both had. I am sure that this young man has moved on with life and sadly like many others, he was a victim and there will be things that happen once in a while to haunt him, like this.

So, who really cares about this. With all real news in the world, who cares about something that happened 30 years ago. What does it matter only to hurt some innocent person, like the missionary's family or children who may or may not know about this. I agree with many commenters here that the victim's name should not have been mentioned. As for the comments about some readers deciding to 'read' the Salt Lake Tribune instead of the DN because of this article...sorry to disappoint you but the SLT also featured the story.

well, if it is her, she's still a wanted criminal in the UK. She jumped bail and disappeared.No wonder she doesn't want to be identified.

Secondly, HaHa, it's far from a laughing matter. the whole story made the Church and being a member of the church in Britain a subject of intense ridicule for a long while, and caused untold heartache to a young man and his family. The Daily Mail newspaper was on the receiving end of a Press Commission judgment against it some years back,after the Church reported the paper after one article, and takes every opportunity to make life misersble for the Church and it's members. Kidnap victims (and remember for some days no-one knew what happened to him- everyone was praying and fasting) are no exception.

First, I think it amusing that she thinks the cloned puppies have the memories of her original dog.

Second, a man can be raped since it is not only sex, but fear and other emotions that can cause arousal. If against his will, than rape though the law would likely consider it sexual assault.

I feel it is an interesting little blurb about this woman. But DN shouldn't have written the story without a positive identification of this woman. Proof would have made it better. But to name her victim again...thats just horrible, rude, and uncalled for. DN victimized that missionary and his entire family again. For that...someone at DN should be making a public apology. I agree with..shame, shame, shame on DN.

I served with the missionary named in this story, good man, crazy kidnapper. You wouldn't think of naming a female rape victim why do you think men are of so little worth? If some wako chic wants to spend bricks of cash for a copy of her fufu dog who cares? Leave any of her supposed victims alone.

Rape is legally defined as Sexual Assault. It is a crime of aggression. It can be any unwanted sexual contact, such as unwanted touching, fondling, or groping of sexual body parts. It a crime committed against a person's will or is committed with physical force or with a threat to hurt the victim or another person. Simply put without consent, it's rape.

Regardless of the age, gender or relationship of the victim to the perpetrator, it is a crime of aggression and control.

Having worked as a victim advocate, it was hard enough to encourage them to ask for help or counseling. But pop culture glorifies it so much that it's become a joke whoever the victim is, let alone when the victim is male. When it's supposed humor disappears, reality hits and it is no laughing matter.

Why dredge the incident up at all? Isn't 30 years long enough for a person to be able to move beyond past behavior? Evidently she has kept her nose clean otherwise, no doubt, it would have been plastered on the pages of this newspaper.

As for the victim and his family, I cannot imagine their feelings at this time. How cruel.

To all who criticize the Des News for running this story, I remember when this incident took place in the 70s. It was big news, and this is a valid follow up. But I wish the DN hadn't run the victim's name. Now he has to deal with sideways looks and questions from a whole new generation. And most who remember the story wouldn't have remebered his name.

C'mon! Its a great story. We've been reporting about the clones - this twist is amazing. I was wondering who would be unstable enough to pay that much money for puppies.

I well remember the original case from 77. I'd hadn't thought about it back then - BUT - his name should never have been used, now or then. Back then, the idea of a man being sexually assualted was fairly rare. Now we know it happens often, but usually by other males.

The story would have been just as valid today without the victim's name being dredged up. I wish they hadn't done that.
