A long time favourite movie :-)) But Maria was the governess, then step mother of the children and second wife to the Captain. So has the journalist reported the name incorrectly, when she refers to Maria as one of the Von Trap children.

Maria the stepmother died in 1987. The third of her seven stepchildren is Maria Franziska von Trapp, born in 1914. They're an exceptionally long-lived family. The second child, Agathe von Trapp, is also living, and the fourth, Werner, died just last year. Only the youngest, Martina, died at a young age (early 30s).

Janadele is mistaken. The Maria about whom the journalist is talking is not the governess, but one of the children. The governess Maria died in 1987; the child (also named Maria) was born to Georg & Maria. She is still alive and is the person talked about in the article.

The journalist is correct. Rodgers, Hammerstein, Lindsey and Crouse changed some details for their musical, including the names and genders of the Captain's children. Maria is indeed the name of Georg's 3rd child from his first marriage.

The names of the children in the movie were different from the children in real life. Quite a few details of the actual story were changed for the movie.

Hey, it wouldn't be modern entertainment without a few of the facts changed to make a more interesting story, would it?

Didn't one of the children comment about the movie once saying, "I don't know who's life that was, but it wasn't mine."
