I'm not anti-mormon, but I hope that Romney-Schromney is NOT chosen as VP--partly because I'm unsure about his faiths--and mostly because I think he likes to flip-flop-flap on things just to get a good public opinion.
Romney??? | 3:10 p.m. July 22, 2008
His selection would be a totally disaster. Obama could win over 45 states if McCain selects Romney. The entire south would go to Obama, since the baptists would stay at home rather than vote for a ticket with a mormon on it.

I hear speculation is driving the price of oil up! Have you heard that? I hear some people want to stop the speculation. They are the same people who saying opening up offshore drilling or ANWR is not going to make a difference for 10 years. Do you wonder if they know what drives speculation? I think they have a different agenda. I don't care who McCain chooses for VP. I just hope he will be able to get elected and make a few simple decisions. Obama is not going to make those decisions.

I am unimpressed with McCain, but adding Romney will buy him nothing, at least not my vote. Adding Huckabee would ensure that I vote for Nadar.

Worst choices we have ever had in a presidential election. Tweedledee and Tweedledee....
re: JB in Florida 2:51 | 3:16 p.m. July 22, 2008
Shout and carry on all you want, but like it or not, America does not view a group of people who do not worship each December 25 as Christians.

Don't be absurd!

Although I agree Romney would be an excellent choice as a VP, McCain can not afford to choose him because McCain has a "Christian Right" problem.

Conservative Christians don't like McCain and they despise Romney for the fact that he is LDS. Adding Romney would elminate the Christian right vote- the exact vote he NEEDS to be viable as a presidential candidate. The exact vote that made Bush president TWICE.

Unfortunately Intelligent people realize that religion doesn't matter and race doesn't matter, but we have a large portion on UNintelligent voters that vote, whine, and pass along false rumors and emails about every candidate.

So- Romney's best chance is another shot going in as a presidential nominee in 2012.

Obama will be the next president whether you like it or not.

My opinion | 3:23 p.m. July 22, 2008
Anyone who thinks Romney is going to be the Vice Presidential Nominee is smoking some BAAAD stuff.
Roger | 3:23 p.m. July 22, 2008
It will be great when Romney becomes vise president and then president later after McCain is gone. We will have a true christian in the white house, of course he will be surrounded by all those gentiles so he will have to move with caution, but God is always on the side of the side of Isreal.
JOANNE | 3:29 p.m. July 22, 2008
I THINK ROMNEY WOULD BE A GREAT VP FOR MCCAIN
HE IS THE BEST

I've never known a Canadian who would give up Canada for the US. How the dollar as crashed, Canadians love to travel south so they can enjoy their wealth.
Steve - President Obama | 3:31 p.m. July 22, 2008
McCain seems to always be scrambling to keep up with Obama, it's like he's always jumping up and down yelling "Hey, look at me please!". But as soon as McCain does get a little attention Obama does something to divert the press back to himself. Expect the same to happen if McCain rushes to name his VP this week (in another effort for attention)... Obama will probably turn right around and name his VP within a couple weeks of returning from his trip and the media will have "forgotten" poor McCain again. :)

It will be quite entertaining to watch what the regulars on these comment boards say when Obama wins in November. They really should just start practicing to say "President Obama" now so it isn't too much of a shock to their systems. :)

I am an "Obamican" (a Republican supporter of Obama).
Dutch | 3:34 p.m. July 22, 2008
I would rather see Romney in a cabinet post or in the RNC than VP - He can contribute more and be out of the spotlight where the bigots can't get him.
After the past eight years of disaster a VP would be under just a large a microscope as the President

Besides unless Mc Cain can pull a rabbit out of his hat and say presto !! Say President Obama and get used to it for four years.

To Same ole Same ole unless you live or lived in New England like I was during this time you have no idea regarding the stand and work Romney did to try to prevent that bill from passing.
It Really Doesn't Matter 10:57 | 3:46 p.m. July 22, 2008
To: It Really Doesn't Matter at 10:57 a.m.

Guess what? I'm a Californian LDS member, and I have NEVER been told who to vote for, what to vote for, or which party to belong to. I have never been asked if I'm going to vote, or how I am planning to vote. It is seldom discussed with fellow ward members. Polite people do not discuss their salaries, or their politics!

If you were 'told' how to vote, then someone practiced "unrighteous dominion", and overstepped their boundaries. Also, how would anyone know if you voted the way they wanted (or told you to), or not? You always have your agency to decide for yourself!

I've listened to letters from the First Presidency read over the pulpit, and that was it! No organized effort by the Ward to drum up support or funds. No further discussion on the subject at all!

In interviews I have NEVER been asked my political party, my political beliefs, or been counseled how to vote or support or defeat any measure.

So - you either have an axe to grind, or belong to a different Church than I do!
Help Please | 3:49 p.m. July 22, 2008
I know, I know...George Bush has been the least popular president in US History. But can someone please help me understand one good reason why anyone would vote for Barack Obama? Can someone please help me understand why we would elect someone who has spent most of his only Senate term campaigning for President? We are talking about granting this man the most powerful position on earth!

Let me see if this picture is appealing...a Democratic White House coupled with a Democratic majority in the House and Senate that would then approve liberal Supreme Court appointments in addition to the other liberal judges that would be appointed by the administration. All I can say is that if you want to hold on to the morals of America, you need to vote McCain whether you like it or not. I'm not a big McCain fan, but will gladly vote for him so that the Democratic Party won't have free reign in Washington. Think carefully about your vote because it has major implications for the entire nation!
Anonymous | 3:52 p.m. July 22, 2008
There isn't a single Mormon mountain state that isn't going to vote GOP so why does McCain need Romney when he's not really a positive anyplace else but MI? Romney couldn't even get a second term in MA or get elected Senator and he'll probably just hurt McCain in the south.
Dixie Dan | 3:58 p.m. July 22, 2008
So Romney is going to flip again and become the potential VP of that "east coast liberal McCain?"

Romeny will have fun defending Mark E. Peterson's comments on blacks and the priesthood before the NAACP and other Evangelical groups.
No way | 4:01 p.m. July 22, 2008
Romney said the economy was good during the debates. He is totally out of touch with average americans.
Not a Christian!!! | 4:04 p.m. July 22, 2008
Oh, I am not talking about Mormon's I am talking about people that say that Mormon's are not Christians. To me that is very not Christ like. So who is the real Christian?

So my take on choices, Jindel is wonderful, but he does not want the job and he needs to be where he is, but he will one day be President of the USA.

Christ is rumored to be a closet gay and only got married to cover this.

Huckabee is not a choice, he and McCain would be two out of control fools together. They get kind of childish, and what strength does Huckabee have?

I don't hear a lot about Pawlenty, but from my understanding, he could be a strong contender.

Romney is also a very strong contender, if people will not put religion into politics and they want someone that can help turn the economy, they will vote for McCain/Romney.

I would hate to see our country destroyed because someone is voted for because they are black or someone is not voted for because they are Mormon.

Votes based on either of these are shallow and stupid, choose the person, not color or religion.

Roger:

"We will have a true christian in the white house, of course he will be surrounded by all those gentiles so he will have to move with caution, but God is always on the side of the side of Isreal. "

I am a red-blooded, dyed in the wool Mormon's Mormon and would be delighted to have Romney, the Christian, in the White House someday. That said, the question is not so much whether God is on your side, but rather whether one is on God's side. WHOEVER gets in the White House needs to be on God's side so that he can be a blessing to this country.

Yes, I believe God will prosper Israel, but I don't think that it requires the acquisition of political power to demonstrate it.
kathyn | 4:13 p.m. July 22, 2008
As much as I like Romney, I really do think that Bobby Jindal would help McCain's ticket more. Reading some of the comments on this thread lets me know how many people despise Mormons. Everyone bends over backwards not to appear racist but it's okay to bash Mormons. Why is there such animosity toward a group of people who really do try to be good Christians?

Ken Baguley | 4:16 p.m. July 22, 2008
If McCain makes it, it will be because of Mitt Romney and no one else. He's his only hope of making it. As soon as it's announced I'll contribute.
awesomeron | 4:16 p.m. July 22, 2008
I care because this Individual Obama must be defeated for the sake of the Unborn Children of America. For the Sake of the future of America. I have trouble pulling the lever for McCain, have never liked him, he is to far left and to much a centrist. He can't help that, that is who he is, Collin Powell is the same way and Ike could have run for either party. Yes "I liked Ike" when I was in 2nd Grade and we had Nuke Drills, Duck and Cover and Kiss your Butt goodbye Drills. I liked Ike because if they where going to get us, we where also going to get them. I can handle McCain and Mitt, I have great faith in Mitt that if he became President that all would be well. He is a great administrator. I think we would do simple things like Ban Abortion, Protect The Borders, and Drill for Oil. Environ morons would just have to get over it. What we have to be very aware of is Nancy P. Is two Heart Beats from being President regardless of who we elect and if that happens God have mercy on us all.
Mitt is a Christian | 4:16 p.m. July 22, 2008
For all you "Christians" who have decided that Mormons are not Christian, who let you decide who is Christian and who isn't? You presume much.
Norma Peters | 4:24 p.m. July 22, 2008
My very wise sister, who I admire greatly, would have never supported Mitt in the past. She is a dedicated and active Republican. She said the only thing that saved the State Republican Convention from being a total failure this year in Neveda was when Mr. Romney came and shared. She would campaign and vote for him in a minute and so would I.

So, to be a Christian, one must celebrate on Dec. 25th. Think on this and then get back to me, ok?

" Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25. During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the weeklong celebration. The festival began when Roman authorities chose an enemy of the Roman people to represent the Lord of Misrule. Each Roman community selected a victim whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week. At the festivals conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man or woman. In addition to human sacrifice, he mentions these customs: widespread intoxication; going from house to house while naked, rape..etc.

The problem was that there was nothing intrinsically Christian about Saturnalia. To remedy this, these Christian leaders named Saturnalias concluding day, December 25th, to be Jesus birthday."

I do celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25th, but being informed, also know that it is an arbitrary day chosen by pagans.

I agree with Al Gore (yes I said that), that if you get the Most Votes you should be President. I still thank God daily that he was not elected. But he is right. The way the President is Elected is not right. That Said and the need to stop the Individual Obama for the sake of America. I would Vote for McCain and Mitt. However most people will not. America is not ready for a 1/2 Black President, Whites will show that at the polls, but Fundamentalist are more afraid of Mitt then they are of Obama. It was the same with JFK being Catholic. Religious Faith but for Gods Sake not to much and please don't put your bag on us. My State is going for Obama regardless so I am going to the Polls because I need to Vote against several other Liberals that are going to get elected anyway. However at the end of the day we are 3 Electoral Votes and 4 Pro Choice Votes 2 House, 2 Senate, and it really does not matter. I will Vote because it is the right thing and the American thing to do and so should everyone.

I'm not sure if Romney will be the VP choice. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that Romney has been raising bundles of cash for McCain. Whether we like it or not money and politics are twin sisters. In this election cycle so far, over $1 billion has been spent to get to this point. Think of all the health care that would buy. If you Democrats think you are virtuous regarding money and politics you are not paying attention.

A couple of bloggers have said that if McCain picks Romney, they will vote for Obama because Romney flip flops too much. Wow. Obama hasn't flipped flopped any positions lately has he? Incredible. Obama is a TYPICAL polition. There is no change in him at all except his positions. McCain is more of the same. My vote is for Steven Wright as President and Emo Phillips as VP. We would all go down in flames but we would at least laugh through it.
Brad Tew | 4:40 p.m. July 22, 2008
Adding Mitt would be only way to salvage the good that is left in this country. Osama, I mean, Obama would be an unimaginable disaster that people won't realize, even when their lives and quality of life have been completely destroyed for themselves and their posterity. Mitt can get things back on track and restore the great principals this country was built on, in spite of the damage that has already been done, it's going to be a tough road.
Willard Perry | 4:48 p.m. July 22, 2008
Ain't gonna happen! However, on the off chance that McCain is elected look for him to offer Romney Treasury or Commerce. You can bet the Mittster is not on the McCain campaign trail simply out of the goodness of his heart. He wants something. And in the grand tradition, he'll get it...though not VP.
ladyblueyes | 4:56 p.m. July 22, 2008
Pharisees ... as far as the eye can see. If you put the corrupt in power, the corrupt will multiply.

I'm scared witless if Obama wins in November. I'm on my knees nightly praying that it doesn't happen. I'm hoping that McCain chooses the right candidate - and if it isn't Romney, I hope it's Condoleeza Rice! she's smart, she's experienced and she has class. Something that Ms. Clinton is missing.

Obama 08 ONO!!

I can vouch for what ""It Really Doesn't Matter 10:57" | 3:46 p.m." said and I am one of millions who can do so unequivocally.

I've never been told how to or have told others how to vote in the church, and I am a political junkie.
Dave | 5:06 p.m. July 22, 2008
Note to Publius (and others) who view recent hype in national media as evidence that Mitt might be the VP: wishful thinking on the part of left-wing journalists! The media had a field-day with Romney the first time around and would LOVE to have him drag McCain's campaign down. In their view, a McCain-Romney ticket would guarantee Obama's election.

Bigotry is alive and thriving..displayed by those who think they are christians! If what I have been reading here: lies, bigotry, ignorance is christian
I prefer to not be CHRISTIAN... But I will keep believing in JESUS CHRIST....does that count ?
The person who said the mormon church instructs
people how to vote is blatently telling a falsehood!
That is totally a lie! I have been a memeber for 46 years and never has the church told me how to vote!
Romney is the only one that is going to give him a chance to WIN! And not because he's mormon ...Harry Reid is mormon....and he's not qualified to be dog catcher of the senate! The person who posted...
MYTH OF THE VP...made a wise analysis! Mitt probably would be relieved if John didn't ask him !
At least thats my opinion......

Amen about Harry Reid!

Romney would be great. He understand business, something no one in Congress understands. He is a Christian, even Jimmy Carter admitted that a long time ago. Obama would be a total disaster.
When McCain loses | 5:49 p.m. July 22, 2008
it won't be because of who he did or did not choose to be the VP. It will be because he's shallow, unknowledgeable, and incapable. McCain tells us Social Security is broken, all while he receives his social security checks even though he's worth millions. He doesn't (and admits he doesn't) know anything about economics. His candidacy is run by so many special interest groups that it would be impossible to track them all down. He can't find Paistan on a map, although he's supported troops being sent to the region. Which I find to be completely disrespectful of our armed forces and the people of this country. I pity the person that McCain chooses.
Alex | 5:51 p.m. July 22, 2008
When Reid was up for reelection last time, I lived in Nevada. At the time, I campaigned for and voted for his evangelical, conservative opponent. I'd do it again if I could.

A taxpayer voting for Obama is like a chicken voting for Col.Sanders!

This is the greatest nation on the earth, but Obama has promised to "change" all that.

Jealously abounds in theses comments. Romney has won nearly every internet vp poll in the last 2 weeks. He would be a great addition to Mitt. Believe it or not, many in the south fully support Mitt. I have a great deal of family there and they love him and so do most of their friends. Not everyone is stupid and bigotted at the same time like some who post on here.

God Bless America... with Mitt Romney

How in the world did we get to the point where not a single candidate for president or vice president has a a basic understanding of the Constitution, limited government, personal liberty and responsibility, the economy, consequences of unfettered immigration, basic science (climate), etc.? Our political lunacy starts with the electorate. A third of the voters get their news and information from stand-up comedian monologues. Another third vote with absolutely no information beyond their own selfish interests. The remaining third are being outvoted by idiots! No wonder politicians focus their pandering on idiots and social parasites -- that's where two-thirds of the votes are! I say it's time to administer a simple Jay Leno-style "Jaywalking" civics test to every voter before he/she gets to vote. The political scene will be cleaned up in just one election cycle!
Anonymous | 6:39 p.m. July 22, 2008
This year's election is going to be based on whether the American people want to become a socialist nation (history has proven that socialism doesn't work) or if we want to remain a capitalist nation (capitalism works and that is why socialist nations are turning to it). Mitt Romney is a capitalist and an economic genius. It seems that he would be the obvious choice.

Deep down, I kinda want to vote for the guy who'll lose.

That way, when the new president stinks (and believe me, being from IL, Barack WILL stink) I can say "well, at least I didn't vote for that jerk!"

I'll join the rest of the complainers.

Mitt For VP | 6:43 p.m. July 22, 2008
This is hilarious.Don't choose Mitt for VP because he's a Mormon yet Obama went to a hate church for 20 yrs.Does this make sense? Mormons teach nothing but love. This is a very mixed up world.

I'd like to hear concrete examples of your contention that LDS candidates take instruction from the Mormon Church. You make this sweeping assumption but provide no facts or instances to support it!
