I have known Larry and his kids for years, and watched them grow up in the business...I respect and know each are very qualified...Although I don't work for LHM now, I do know, Larry has organized a highly skilled management team to direct and consult...No one is doing this alone, every one knows the importance of good management, the business will still thrive. Good Luck and Congratulations to Greg are in order and best of wishes for Larry and the family.

You are exactly right. The weight of managing a large business enterprise is difficult at best. When familial leadership is at the helm, capable and qualified management is nearly impossible to hire and retain. Though "good guys" are great to socialize with, business success is not predicated on social behavior. It is a function of EXPERIENCE, SMARTS and GUT. For Greg to have no degree only illustrates and illuminates that silver spoons are plentiful in the Miller family. Larry has made an emotional decision under apparent duress. The End!

I hope Mr. Miller is able to recover a degree of health which will allow him to pursue his loves. The complications of diabetes can be horrendous. Take care of your self Larry.

I have worked for sons who've taken over daddys business, and I've gotta say that they are pompus, spoiled, think they know it all, but really know squat brats. Nothing is worse than someone who has had success handed to him on a silver platter. Yeah he is Larry's son, but being the son of a successful business man and being a successful business man are 2 completelt different things. That expensive suit he's wearing in the photo, his dad probably bought that for him. Now he's going to go around feeling all entitled, and demanding respect from larrys old employees, but he won't get it. Why? because he hasn't earned it in the eyes of his employees, and if he simply maintains larrys empire, he will never have the respect of his peers. He has to expand it in order to be considered legit.

Time will tell on how well Greg can step in to his fathers shoes. I can think of more second generation failures than successes, but, hopefully, LHM has instilled some of his asture business sense in to this kid, otherwise he will just auger it in to the ground. I own my own company. I also have 3 sons, All three have expressed an "interest" in running the business when I decide to retire. Will i appoint oneof my sons as my successor? Nothing would please me more. But I have sat down with my sons and told them what is going to be expected of them, and that includes a college education, which, in and of itself, does not guarantee success, but shows to me that my kids are capable of thinking, persevering, having a little drive to accomplish a goal. I have also explained to them that succeeding me is not a sure thing. I have responsibilities to my employees, financial institutions, customers.
I would assume that LHM would have had similar talks with his kids about the family business. So, like I said, only time will tell.

I think people are getting it wrong. It is the third generation of wealth that has troubles. The 2nd generation honors his parents and tries his best. Sometimes modest improvements are made, sometimes some step backs occur. The third generation grows up only knowing wealth and does not appreciate how it was acquired or what it takes to keep it. The Larry Miller empire should be fine for now; just watch out for the next succession in twenty years.

Very few people will ever know the extent to which Larry has given to this community. He is generous and a good man. If he chooses to give his wealth to his children as opposed to some stranger, what is there to criticize? And for anyone to say that Greg will fail simply because he is the son of a wealthy man is just absurd. Do I smell a little bit of jealousy?

For my part I hope them nothing but continued success. Can you imagine what our community would be like without Larry? No Jazz. No Bees (I hate baseball). No Real Salt Lake (Face it, if Larry was not successful with Jazz there would be no Checkets and no Real). No Motorsports Park in Tooele. No Tour of Utah. SLCC would be a 1/4 the size of what is is today. No decent movie theaters. And the list goes on and on.

I'm sure Greg knows better than anyone the size of the shoes he has to fill. He will make mistakes just like Larry has. Big deal! It's no ones business but his.

Get off of Gail! She's a great woman and has more smarts than a lot of men. Behind every successful man is a great woman who has gone without while he was building and maintaining his empire. She's still there and will be through thick and thin. Get well soon Larry, there is life after Diabetes 2.
