As I recall, the City Creek Canyon Road has a pretty restrictive speed limit. I don't remember the exact limit, but it's low enough to ensure pedestrians on the road aren't overtaken too fast by passing autos. However, when I'm up there, I'm often passed by cyclists literally racing down that canyon road. Many of them are going much too fast to safely respond to an obstacle encountered around a curve.

Now, I'm not saying the cyclist involved in this particular instance was speeding. We just don't know that. However, given what I've experienced on the City Creek Canyon Road - it's a possibility.

People just need to slow down - particularly if they're coming around a blind curve. There may not be a truck parked around that blind curve, but there may be a person walking, a fallen rock or tree, or even a deer there.

A cyclist going too fast for existing conditions, unable to stop when encountering an obstruction in the road, and hits a vehicle that was not even moving; the city should file counterclaims against the cyclist for the damages to the truck, and all attorneys fees for related litigation....

Their is a reason it is called a Blind Curve, to anyone with any sense especially someone who has ridden that canyon Befor I would think you would slow down a bit not knowing what may be around the corner, Its sad to see people engaging in law suits all the time, what happened to the days of where an accident was just that an accident, I think their is accountabilty on both parts including the cycleist.............

Reminds me of when I hit the back of a reinforced construction sign at 2am in the morning. The city construction crew had forgotten to mark it and had left it with the BLACK side facing oncoming traffic on a dark strip of South Temple. The front of my motorcycle was crushed but now I'm a lot more thanful that I didnt need medical attention.

You all need to ride bicyles for a month. Than come back with all your "wisdom". Gas at 10 bucks a gallon will be heaven, getting you lead sled drivers off the road.

The Desert news had the story wrong, the truck was driving up the canyon on the wrong side of the road it was not parked. I was walking up the canyon that day and witnessed the accident there was nothing the cyclist could do to avoid being hit.
