How does "I know..." have any idea where his tithing is allocated? My
understanding, which I am certain is better founded than that of most, is that
BYU employees' salaries do not come from tithing.

So, Mr. or Ms. Go Utes, are you saying that if the BYU athletic director makes
let's say $150,000 you pay that much in tithing on your $1.5 million annual
income. And if you are making $1.5 million it is nice of a Ute supporer to
contribute so generously to BYU athletics. And how do you know it all goes to
one person's salary at BYU? I'm just saying if your comment was
supposed to be critical of Mormons volutarily paying 10 percent of their income
to be used in many worthwhile ways, I missed your point.

These are base salaries only. Louisville AD's total package is over $1
million annually. I'd bet all these athletic directors have additional
amounts added in a bonus structure or separate public appearance payments.

Wouldn't it be great if all this funding and talent and energy went to the
faculty of medicine? Or engineering? We will all need a doctor someday. Never in
my life will I 'need' a basketball player.

Since you seem to be ignorant of the facts let me educate you. BYU athletics do
not use any tithing funds. It is entirely self sufficient on receipts and
donations. But coaches and administrators at Utah do draw from public funds.
So who really has the right to be upset? I would say BYU fans that happen to
live in Utah. LOL

If the BYU A.D. takes 10% of all the Ute fans incomes he must be one poor dude.
That is the one nice thing about being a Ute fan, on Saturday afternoons you
have plenty of room to spred out at the R.E.S.

I am sure Homoe makes a lot of money. He needs the extra for Mendenhall to make
those phone calls to mission presidents and missionaries about coming to play
for BYU. They are never going to tell you how much he makes but I can tell you
it is a "ton" of money.

It may be that my Tithing money doesn't pay for BYU athletics. However, I
also thought that BYU DID NOT recruit missionaries while they are on their
missions, and we all know that isn't true now that Riley Nelson is a
Cougar!!!

This article says that in 2002 utah's athletic program was tabbed as top 20
overall by US News and World Report. Are you kidding me?? US News and World
Report?!! Since when did they become the big "sports authority"? It
wasn't even ESPN or Sports Illustrated that gave them that
"recognition"! It was freakin' US News and World Report!! So
what's up next for them? Big kudos from the Girl Scouts or the American
Dental Association?

I'm a BYU fan, but "I know"'s comment was pretty funny.
I've actually heard about people writing "not to be used by BYU" on their tithing slips before. I wish those people would just stop paying tithing. It kind of defeats the purpose of giving the Lord something (which is already his), and then telling him what to do with it.
That said, I wonder what it feels like for all of these people having their salaries as public record?

Nice use of tax dollars since I can correctly assume that the state universities
are publicly funded.
i.e. Most AD jobs are government jobs funded from the taxpayers (BYU and other private schools excepted)

This I know (I know...), First, my taxes help pay the salaries of every A.D. and
build buildings at every public institution in Utah. I have no choice. Second,
my voluntary tithing helps pay the salary of the A.D. and build buildings at
BYU. Somehow I feel better about the money I voluntarily send to BYU. Go
Cougars.

I happen to have connections at BYU and know how much Holmoe and others are
making. I cannot disclose it, but I can assure you it is very competitive with
other schools BYU's size and with similar athletic programs. When BYU
professors and staff, including the AD, complain about their low pay, they are
just whining. They are FAR from starving, I promise you!

I think Dr. Hill should make 3 times what he does, after all he spent more and
more money to keep Whit at Utah and BYU ended up with Bronco. What a great thing
Dr. Hill did for BYU in this case. As a BYU fan I think all cougar faithful
should be sending him thank you presents every month. Without him we would have
dim Whit as our coach...

Honestly, BYU fans are the most paranoid, thin-skinned group of people on the

Hilarious that all these BYUers are so poor that they need tithing to get them
through school. I guess you are all being good mormons and are being grateful
for what others give you. After all the church does have a good welfare system.
I mean when I see cougar fans driving those cougar vans, you know the ones, the
old dodge voyagers and ford windstars that have all these byu stickers on them,
usually found parked in the D.I. parking lots. I can't help but feel bad
for them when I see them. So I don't feel bad that my tithing goes to them
and their starving students. Hey I'll even throw in some extra this week.

They lived in the shadow of BYU for years, then had a couple of good season, started calling the MWC the UBC (ask them what it means) and suddenly the floor fell out.
I don't begrudge what Hill makes or Whittingham. More power to them. But if an LDS person does not want his money to fund BYU then he should go speak to the First Presidency. I sure want that kind of say so with all of my federal tax dollars, but I think they will ignore me just as he will be ignored. The only difference is they will politely talk to him, the IRS will just tell me to buzz off.

Thanks to all for your entertaining comments. What you all really mean is
"I wish I was making that kind of money" because you all sound like
whiners which nearly all BYU (in a sweet, innocent, higher pitched,
condescending tone) and U of U (more of a slurred, less intelligible tone) fans
are of course. It's nice to be above all of you're bickering up here
in Logan where we understand that research of bio-fuels is much, much more

What Utah State SHOULD do is join with schools who they have more in common with
financially. Utah State, Montana, Idaho State, Montana State, maybe Weber

There are no coaches or AD's at BYU paid by tithing funds of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. If anyone blogging here knew of the care
exercised with the disposition of tithing funds you would never speak
disrespectfully of that process.

The thing about BYU that really gets people is this (just explaining one point
of view here):
All church members are supposed to pay tithing. Only a fraction of the members around the world get a chance to get a nearly free (and quality) education at BYU. Those who do go to BYU are probably the few who could actually afford to pay for an education themselves.
The "exclusivity" factor of that school along with the thought that their money MIGHT BE going to BYU athletics is what makes LDS people write "not to go to BYU" on their tithing slips. Whether or not it's effective, at least they have a chance to voice their displeasure which is not always an easy thing to do in the church.

My point was, and is, that too many post secondary schools have become merely support systems for the corporate sport world, relegating what should be their focus, academics, to second place status at best. It's not their fault, but rather a symptom of the focus of society on the superficial, the celebrity, the athlete. Our dumbing down. It's why we don't do well anymore at creating engineers and scientists, and are falling behind other countries. And it's why I think schools should get out of the entertainment business. It won't happen, and it's not the end of the world, but it is my opinion...
