I didn't vote for Chaffetz in the primary because of the fact that he
doesn't live in this district. I'll vote for him in the general
election because, in my opinion, he's the best candidate.

The real reason Chaffetz didn't run in his home district is because he
lacks political courage. He knew he would never beat Matheson in the 2nd
district general election. He decided unseating a fellow member of the GOP would
be a much easier way for him to gain a coveted seat in congress. It appears he
is blinded by ambition, we need fewer politicians like him.

on the Deseret News for allowing James to spew his lies but whenever someone
tries to call him on it, they don't let those posts through. Unfounded,
baseless accusations are illegal and the DNews should know better.

Chaffetz was being reasonable. Matheson is reasonably popular; Cannon is not. It would take wads of money to take on an incumbent in a general. It's comparatively easy in a convention/primary.

I can't believe it took about 40 comments before the truth about this
article came out. I would think that the former Utah Republican Party Chair and
current DNews Editor, Joe Cannon, might get past the fact that Chaffetz beat his
brother, but he decides to have his reporters run non-stories challenging the
founding fathers on the requirements for becoming a representative. Thanks Joe.

Chaffetz is not running in his own district because he knows he cannot beat
Congressman Matheson. Personally, I feel he will not beat Spencer. It is time
for Utah to once again have a two-party system. Having all Reps/Senators being
Republican is not healthy, just like having all Reps/Senators as Democrats is
not healthy. Utah is a good example of why President Washington detested
political parties.

I could care less about where chaffetz resides, I can't vote for or against
him. I loved the historical research that went into the article. Thanks
Deseret news for actually putting forth a good historical article with modern
implications. I didn't read anything about American Idol, women whose
names start with B (britney, brinckley, ect). This type of article is the
whole reason for reading the paper over watching tv news.

The Utah Legislature took away a sliver of Utah County, to help elect a
Republican in another district. Everyone thinks of Utah County as all being in
the third district, so since he is a couple of mile from the boundries does it
really matter? If Chaffetz was from a far away city like Logan it might have
hurt him, but being from in a city which is from what should be in the boundries
should not matter especially in a strong Republican district.

Before the primary, the did a survey and it showed Jason Chaffetz beating
Bennion Spencer. (Chris did as well). Unless the State GOP does something
stupid, like they did with Snow, Jason will be elected. Bennion Spencer might be
a better choice than some of the past Democratic candidates, but I have met
Jason and am voting for Jason. The location was a not issue. Chris Cannon spent
a zillion dollars just before the primary vote trying to make this an issue, and
a few posts and emails made it not, so why is it being brought up again?

Jason is just looking for a chance to be a Congressman - we lost a lot when
Cannon lost in the primary.

Alpine should be in District 3 anyway, so it's a non-issue with me. I
won't be voting for Jason Chaffetz, though, because I don't like his
politics. He's an extremist in every sense of the word.

I have now had two pathetic supporters of Chaffetz admit that they are also aware of the Australian strippers. Their defense is that he has since repented of it. Well good. I believe in repentence. I also think that hiring strippers with Nuskin dollars shows both a lack of judgement on his personal choices and his business accumen.
I will be working aggressively to elect the Democrat. Fact of the matter is a large number of people stayed home because they are not in love with Cannon, but had no desire to vote for Chaffetz. With this coming general election they will be out in force and with all major factors, to include Australia, the fact that Chaffetz is a complete carpet bagger who talks as extreme as possible in his campaign rhetoric, time to elect the Democrat.
I will meet people in the middle. I supported Cannon. I admit Cannon is not the best possible. With Cannon gone, by defeating Chaffetz we allow for a large number of very qualified Republican candidates to step up in 2010. This needs to happen.
I will suffer through two years of a Democrat to avoid Chaffetz's pandering, extreme carpetbagging.

Voting out Chris Cannon was the biggest mistake the 3rd District has ever made.
He had seniority. He was on committees. He had clout.
Chaffetz has proven he doesn't care enough about the district he represents to even move here. I can't afford the gas to drive up to Alpine to talk to him, and I'm not alone. What a great way to escape the work of his office!
Good ol' Jason played football at BYU. Great. That will REALLY help him with a bunch of liberals up on Capitol Hill.
Only 1/3 of voters even bothered to show up. The WORST turnout in the USA! What does this tell the world about Utah?
I think Chaffetz win accomplished only one thing; a sure win for the Democrat running against him in November.

change the stupid law. He is running to represent the 3rd district. Obviously
Cannon was an idiot whose time was up....I wish the same could be said for
Bennett and Hatch. Doesn't anyone think 30 plus years is long enough to
represent a state? Go back to work like the rest of us hatch!!!! Maybe you can
ask for a job from anyone of your long-time cronies...Stan.....Mac.....etc

I can think of two prominent ones--Bobby Kennedy was elected Senator from New
York, although he lived in Washington and Massachusetts.
Hillary Clinton was a resident of Arkansas before she moved to Washington, D.C. for 8 years. She ran for the Senate from New York--and was elected.

Oh, and I forgot John McCain--he was a Texan before his mentor, John Tower,
advised him to move out to a smaller western state where he could afford to run
for election. He divorced the wife who waited for him thru his imprisonment in
Vietnam, moved to AZ, and married into a well-to-do beer distribution family.
Interestingly enough, his 2nd family remained in Phoenix all the time he has
been in Washington.

listen with an open mind to what he wants to accomplish, will vote for him.

Of course, Jim is the only one that I have seen that uses a PO Box for his place of residency. Check out his voter info at Utah's website. Everyone else uses a house address.
Would that make everyone happy? Jason could get a PO box in Provo. The point is Jason is legally accepted to be able to run in the 3rd district. He has been honest about where he lives and plans on living.

We need the best people to run for office, to serve and do the work most of us
are unwilling to do. Anyone who can put together a strong platform for change,
while protecting conservative values, is worth our support no matter where he or
she may live. The legislature didn't see fit to make this illegal and as
far as Ican tell, it is an absurd distraction from the real issues. Who can
lead us and represent us in these trying times most effectively? My money is on
Jason!

In the 1995 Supreme Court case about term limits (U.S. Term Limits, Inc. vs.
Thornton) the court reaffirmed that the rules for electing congressmen are
exactly as the framer's intended. Congressmen representatives of the
state. Voting is divided into districts to give voters an approximately equal
vote based on the principle of "one man, one vote."
"The Framers wanted to minimize the barriers that would exclude the most able citizens from service in the National government."
"Minimizing barriers" includes avoiding the gerrymandering that negatively impacts so many state elections.
This is a non-issue that the Chris and Joe Cannon have tried to make an issue. And I'm sure the Democrats would love to twist it to their benefit as well. Let's talk about real issues, okay?

Lee Donaldson's article is not only irrelevant (since Chaffetz is not doing
anything illegal or unethical), but it is very revealing of the following
points:
1) Of the very few cases Donaldson points out of representatives elected while residing outside their districts all tried to do something to appear that they did. This subterfuges are typical of politicians. Jason Chaffetz did nothing of the kind. He has been honest about his residency, his intentions, and has not done anything for the sake of appearences. I find that refreshingly honest!
2) The article seems to be a continuation of Cannon's defeated campaign; harping on an irrelevant and ineffective point geared to play on the fears of the ignorant ("Maybe Jason won't be seated in Congress!!") rather than on any legal substance.
Lee, thanks for your entertaining research, but, how about doing articles about the real stories of Jason Chaffetz's campaign?
How many times an incumbent is defeated 60-40 by a newcommer?
How many times an incumbent outspends his rival by six times and still looses by 20 points?
These stories would show the real spirit of America!

The creation of districts is not constitutionally-mandated. If Americans want a more representative and competitive democracy, they should replaced gerrymandered, single-member districts with at-large proportional voting for federal representatives.
The Center for Voting and Democracy is an excellent resources to learn about better electoral methods.
